Assessment of heavy metals and radionuclides in groundwater and associated human health risk appraisal in the vicinity of Rooppur nuclear power plant, Bangladesh

This study was carried out to assess the groundwater quality through estimating trace and heavy metal concentration and radionuclide levels in the vicinity of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) sites. Twenty-six (26) parameters, including major cations (K, Na, Mg, Ca) and anions (SO₄^-2, NO₃^-), trace and heavy metals (Mn, Fe, Zn, Ni, Co, Pb, Cd, As, Hg, Cu, Li, Be, B, V, Ga, Sr, Ag, Ba) and radionuclides (¹³⁷Cs, ²²⁶Ra, ²²⁸Ra, and ⁴⁰K) were estimated in water samples in the study area. This study revealed that the concentration values (μg/L) of Mn (667.091 ± 7.481), Fe (191.477 ± 3.756), Sr (105.218 ± 13.424), and Zn (23.493 ± 1.134) were the dominant metals in the study area. Different pollution evaluation indices (i.e., HPI, HEI, NI, C_d) data revealed that the study area was under a low to medium level of pollution due to the presence of metals in water. Subsequently, non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks assessments for both adults and children were conducted, which indicated that health risk for the carcinogenic metals were below the threshold level except As through oral exposure for both adult and children. The activity concentrations of ²²⁶Ra, ²²⁸Ra, and ⁴⁰K were measured to demonstrate probable radioactivity pollution using Gamma-ray spectrometry (High-resolution HPGe detector). The highest activity concentration of ²²⁶Ra, ²²⁸Ra, and ⁴⁰K in groundwater samples were 4.9 ± 1.24 Bq/L (RNPP-15), 1.71 ± 0.43 Bq/L (RNPP-15), and 15.43 ± 3.08 Bq/L (RNPP-15). Among the three studied radionuclides, ⁴⁰K has the highest average activity concentration. The radiological indicators referred to the annual effective dose (AED) is 0.4273 mSv yr-1, which implies no significant cause of radiological risks and hazards (UNSCEAR guideline value). This study provides a baseline of trace and toxic metal contamination, radioactivity, and radiation levels in the groundwater of the nuclear power plant (being built) area.

Radioactivity of drinking-water in the vicinity of nuclear power plants in China based on a large-scale monitoring study

The public concern for radioactivity of drinking-water has been increasing in recent years after the rapid development of nuclear power plants, and especially after the Fukushima nuclear accident. In this study, the radioactivity of water samples collected in the vicinity of nuclear facilities from seven provinces in China was measured and an average annual equivalent effective dose derived from drinking-water ingestion was calculated. The results showed that, in winter and spring, the activities of gross α and β ranged from 0.009 Bq/L to 0.200 Bq/L and from 0.067 Bq/L to 0.320 Bq/L, respectively. While, in summer and autumn, the activities of gross α and β varied from 0.002 Bq/L to 0.175 Bq/L and from 0.060 Bq/L to 0.334 Bq/L. Our results indicated that the gross α and β activities in these measured water samples were below the WHO recommended values (0.5 Bq/L for gross α and 1.0 Bq/L for gross β) and the annual equivalent effective dose derived from drinking-water ingestion was at a safe level.

Preliminary risk assessment of radon in groundwater: a case study from Eskisehir, Turkey

The aim of this study was to determine the radon concentrations in the water supplies of a residential area of central west Anatolia, Turkey. This research provides a preliminary risk assessment for inhabitants in the study area which can be applied for other regions. In 14 out of the 19 water supplies analysed, radon concentrations exceeded the maximum contaminant level (11.1 Bq l(-1)). The total annual effective doses of 10 for the wet season and 14 for the dry season out of the 19 water supplies are greater than the values recommended by EPA [Cancer Risk Coefficients for Environmental Exposure to Radionuclides, Federal Guidance Report No. 13 (US Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, 1999) < http://www.epa.gov/rpdweb00/docs/federal/402-r-99-001.pdf >] (0.1 mSv a(-1)). The elevated radon concentrations in water resources are most probably linked with geological origin which contains significant amounts of radioactive minerals.

Evaluating practicability of an LSC method for routine monitoring gross alpha and beta activities in water samples in Taiwan

A procedure using liquid scintillation counting for the monitoring of gross alpha and beta activities in environmental water was implemented to improve the conventional procedure using GFPC adopted in Taiwan. The new procedure was acquired through calibration and validation, and then was applied to the monitoring of surface water in Taiwan. This procedure can improve 2-4 times of detection efficiencies and takes only 70-80% of analysis time with reliable accuracy. With these features, the newly developed procedure is favorable during emergency situations.

The implications of particle energy and acidic media on gross alpha and gross beta determination using liquid scintillation

The interaction of humans with radioactivity present in the environment from natural and artificial sources necessitates an evaluation of its risk on human health. Gross alpha and gross beta activities can provide a rapid evaluation of the radioactive content of a sample and can be simultaneously determined by using liquid scintillation counters. However, calibration of the liquid scintillation counter is required and is affected by many factors, such as particle energy and the acidity of the media. This study investigates what effect the particle energy used for calibration has on misclassification and how to account for this misclassification in routine measurements. The variability in measurement produced by the final pH, as well as any acids used in sample treatment, was also studied. These results showed that the most commonly used acid for these types of analyses, HNO(3), produced a high amount of misclassifications at very low pH. The results improved when HCl was used to adjust the sample to low pH.

Natural radioactivity in groundwater and estimates of committed effective dose due to water ingestion in the state of Chihuahua (Mexico)

The activity concentration of 222Rn, 226Ra and total uranium in groundwater samples collected from wells distributed throughout the state of Chihuahua has been measured. The values obtained of total uranium activity concentration in groundwater throughout the state run from <0.03 up to 1.34 Bq l-1. Generally, radium activity concentration was <0.16 Bq l-1, with some exceptions; in spring water of San Diego de Alcalá, in contrast, the value reached approximately 5.3 Bq l-1. Radon activity concentration obtained throughout the state was from 1.0 to 39.8 Bq l-1. A linear correlation between uranium and radon dissolved in groundwater of individual wells was observed near Chihuahua City. Committed effective dose estimates for reference individuals were performed, with results as high as 134 microSv for infants in Aldama city. In Aldama and Chihuahua cities the average and many individual wells showed activity concentration values of uranium exceeding the Mexican norm of drinking water quality.

Radioactivity in bottled waters sold in Mexico

Measurements of gross alpha and beta activities were made on 21 domestic and international brands of bottled (purified and mineral) water sold in the Mexican market to assess its radiological quality. Alpha and beta activities were determined using a liquid-scintillation detector with pulse-shape analysis feature. All the purified water had values of beta activity lower than the limit for potable drinking water (1.0 Bq/l), while three brands surpassed the limit of alpha activity (0.1 Bq/l). The limit for alpha radioactivity content was exceed by three mineral waters; the results show a correlation between radioactivity content and mineral salts, which are related with the origin and treatment of the waters.
