Maintenance of androdioecy in the freshwater shrimp, Eulimnadia texana: do hermaphrodites need males for complete fertilization?

Reproductive transitions in plants and animals: selfing syndrome, sexual selection and speciation

The evolution of predominant self-fertilisation frequently coincides with the evolution of a collection of phenotypes that comprise the 'selfing syndrome', in both plants and animals. Genomic features also display a selfing syndrome. Selfing syndrome traits often involve changes to male and female reproductive characters that were subject to sexual selection and sexual conflict in the obligatorily outcrossing ancestor, including the gametic phase for both plants and animals. Rapid evolution of reproductive traits, due to both relaxed selection and directional selection under the new status of predominant selfing, lays the genetic groundwork for reproductive isolation. Consequently, shifts in sexual selection pressures coupled to transitions to selfing provide a powerful paradigm for investigating the speciation process. Plant and animal studies, however, emphasise distinct selective forces influencing reproductive-mode transitions: genetic transmission advantage to selfing or reproductive assurance outweighing the costs of inbreeding depression vs the costs of males and meiosis. Here, I synthesise links between sexual selection, evolution of selfing and speciation, with particular focus on identifying commonalities and differences between plant and animal systems and pointing to areas warranting further synergy.

A field test of a model for the stability of androdioecy in the freshwater shrimp, Eulimnadia texana

The evolution of hermaphroditism from dioecy is a poorly studied transition. Androdioecy (the coexistence of males and hermaphrodites) has been suggested as an intermediate step in this evolutionary transition or could be a stable reproductive mode. Freshwater crustaceans in the genus Eulimnadia have reproduced via androdioecy for 24+ million years and thus are excellent organisms to test models of the stability of androdioecy. Two related models that allow for the stable maintenance of males and hermaphrodites rely on the counterbalancing of three life history parameters. We tested these models in the field over three field seasons and compared the results to previous laboratory estimates of these three parameters. Male and hermaphroditic ratios within years were not well predicted using either the simpler original model or a version of this model updated to account for differences between hermaphroditic types ('monogenic' and 'amphigenic' hermaphrodites). Using parameter estimates of the previous year to predict the next year's sex ratios revealed a much better fit to the original relative to the updated version of the model. Therefore, counter to expectations, accounting for differences between the two hermaphroditic types did not improve the fit of these models. At the moment, we lack strong evidence that the long-term maintenance of androdioecy in these crustaceans is the result of a balancing of life history parameters; other factors, such as metapopulation dynamics or evolutionary constraints, may better explain the 24+ million year maintenance of androdioecy in clam shrimp.

The evolution from females to hermaphrodites results in a sexual conflict over mating in androdioecious nematode worms and clam shrimp

The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans and the clam shrimp Eulimnadia texana are two well-studied androdioecious species consisting mostly of self-fertilizing hermaphrodites and few males. To understand how androdioecy can evolve, a simple two-step mathematical model of the evolutionary pathway from a male-female species to a selfing-hermaphrodite species is constructed. First, the frequency of mutant females capable of facultative self-fertilization increases if the benefits of reproductive assurance exceed the cost. Second, hermaphrodites become obligate self-fertilizers if the fitness of selfed offspring exceeds one-half the fitness of outcrossed offspring. Genetic considerations specific to C. elegans and E. texana show that males may endure as descendants of the ancestral male-female species. These models combined with an extensive literature review suggest a sexual conflict over mating in these androdioecious species: selection favours hermaphrodites that self and males that outcross. The strength of selection on hermaphrodites and males differs, however. Males that fail to outcross suffer a genetic death. Hermaphrodites may never encounter a rare male, and those that do and outcross only bear less fecund offspring. This asymmetric sexual conflict results in an evolutionary stand-off: rare, but persistent males occasionally fertilize common, but reluctant hermaphrodites. A consequence of this stand-off may be an increase in the longevity of the androdioecious mating system.

Consequences of inbreeding depression due to sex-linked loci for the maintenance of males and outcrossing in branchiopod crustaceans

Androdioecy, where males co-occur with hermaphrodites, is a rare sexual system in plants and animals. It has a scattered phylogenetic distribution, but it is common and has persisted for long periods of evolutionary time in branchiopod crustaceans. An earlier model of the maintenance of males with hermaphrodites in this group, by Ottoet al.(1993), considered the importance of male–hermaphrodite encounter rates, sperm limitation, male versus hermaphrodite viability and inbreeding depression suffered by selfed progeny. Here I advance this model in two ways: (1) by exploring the conditions that would allow the invasion of hermaphrodites into a dioecious population and that of females into an androdioecious population; and (2) by incorporating a term that accounts for the potential effects of genetic load linked to a dominant hermaphrodite-determining allele in androdioecious populations. The new model makes plausible sense of observations made in populations of the speciesEulimnadia texana, one of a number of related species whose common ancestor evolved hermaphroditism (and androdioecy) from dioecy. In particular, it offers an explanation for the long evolutionary persistence of androdioecy in branchiopods and suggests reasons for why dioecy has not re-evolved in the clade. Finally, it provides a rather unusual illustration of the implications of the degeneration of loci linked to a sex-determining locus.

ALTERNATIVE REPRODUCTIVE STRATEGIES IN THE PROGENETIC TREMATODE COITOCAECUM PARVUM: COMPARISON OF SELFING AND MATING WORMS

The progenetic opecoelid trematode Coitocaecum parvum can reproduce either precociously by selfing in its second intermediate amphipod host or by mating in its normal definitive fish host. In this study, we describe and compare the infection parameters and some life history traits of both egg-producing worms and non-egg producing worms in both their second intermediate and definitive hosts. We showed that 58% of worms start to produce eggs while still in the amphipod. The relative abundance of progenetic worms increased with amphipod size, and egg-producing worms achieved greater size in amphipods than in fish. These 2 findings support the reproductive insurance hypothesis. No difference in size was revealed between eggs produced in the amphipods and those produced in the fish. Although more information is needed to thoroughly assess the respective costs and benefits of selfing and mating in this species, our conclusion is that adopting progenesis may have few, if any, long-term negative consequences for the parasite.

Levels of inbreeding depression over seven generations of selfing in the androdioecious clam shrimp, Eulimnadia texana

Androdioecy (mixtures of males and hermaphrodites) is a rare mating system in both plants and animals. Theory suggests that high levels of inbreeding depression can maintain males in androdioecious populations if hermaphrodites commonly self-fertilize. However, if inbreeding depression (delta) can be 'purged' from selfing populations, maintaining males is more difficult. In the androdioecious clam shrimp, Eulimnadia texana, delta is estimated to be as high as 0.7. Previous work suggests that this high level is maintained in the face of high levels of inbreeding due to an associative overdominance of fitness-related loci with the sex-determining locus. Such associative overdominance would make purging of inbreeding depression difficult to impossible. The current experiment was designed to determine if delta can be purged in these shrimp by tracking fitness across seven generations in selfing and outcrossing treatments. Evidence of purging was found in one of four populations, but the remaining populations demonstrated a consistent pattern of delta across generations. Although the experimental design allowed ample opportunity for purging, the majority of populations were unable to purge their genetic load. Therefore, delta in this species is likely due to associative overdominance caused by deleterious recessive alleles linked to the sex determining locus.
