Abstract
Investigated for more than a century now, B chromosomes (Bs) research has come a long way from Bs being considered parasitic or neutral to becoming unselfish and bringing benefits to their hosts. B chromosomes exist as accessory chromosomes along with the standard A chromosomes (As) across eukaryotic taxa. Represented singly or in multiple copies, B chromosomes are largely heterochromatic but also contain euchromatic and organellar segments. Although B chromosomes are derived entities, they follow their species-specific evolutionary pattern. B chromosomes fail to pair with the standard chromosomes during meiosis and vary in their number, size, composition and structure across taxa and ensure their successful transmission through non-mendelian mechanisms like mitotic, pre-meiotic, meiotic or post-meiotic drives, unique non-disjunction, self-pairing or even imparting benefits to the host when they lack drive. B chromosomes have been associated with cellular processes like sex determination, pathogenicity, resistance to pathogens, phenotypic effects, and differential gene expression. With the advancements in B-omics research, novel insights have been gleaned on their functions, some of which have been associated with the regulation of gene expression of A chromosomes through increased expression of miRNAs or differential expression of transposable elements located on them. The next-generation sequencing and emerging technologies will further likely unravel the cellular, molecular and functional behaviour of these enigmatic entities. Amidst the extensive fluidity shown by B chromosomes in their structural and functional attributes, we perceive that the existence and survival of B chromosomes in the populations most likely seem to be a trade-off between the drive efficiency and adaptive significance versus their adverse effects on reproduction.

Abstract
Spontaneous DNA insertions from supernumerary B chromosomes (Bs) into the standard A chromosome complement were detected in rye (Secale cereale L.), using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis with the D1100 B-specific sequence probe. The insertions were seen in individuals derived from plants possessing deleted Bs, characterized in this study by not having the B-specific sequences that are normally found at the distal part of the long arm of the standard rye B. This result supports the case for the spontaneous introgression of B-specific DNA into the A chromosome genome, and it indicates that 'cross-talking' between A and B chromosomes may occur in wild populations.

Abstract
B chromosomes are genomic "intruders" normally characterized by their total dispensability counteracted by a variety of drive mechanisms, which assures their presence regardless of their harmful effects on the host genome. From an evolutionary standpoint, the relationship between standard (A) and B chromosomes can go through different pathways, from an everlasting arms race to a cordial B integration. Examples underlying the first situation are fairly common; B integration, however, has been more a theoretical than a practical possibility. The B chromosome in the haplodiploid solitary wasp Trypoxylon albitarse is probably the first example of a "mimetic" B, which is being integrated into the A genome by limiting itself to one B per haploid genome, the same dosage as the A chromosomes. Here we review some of the findings underlying this hypothesis and discuss the T. albitarse B strategy as a possible mechanism for B chromosome integration as a regular member of the chromosome complement in haplodiploid organisms.

Abstract
Starting with a spontaneous B-A centric fusion found in a natural population of the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans, we have obtained different strains carrying the rearrangement in various conditions and doses. Using this material, we have analyzed the meiotic behavior of the translocated chromosome in living cultured spermatocytes, simulating the successive steps of a hypothetical process of integration of a B chromosome into the standard genome via B-A centric fusion. Remarkably, the behavior of fusion heterozygotes, the initial step of the integration process, is much more regular than that of any other configuration, including homozygotes. The reasons for the failure of B chromosome integration into the normal complement by translocation are discussed.

Abstract
B chromosome variation in nine Moroccan populations of the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans was analysed for 3 consecutive years. In addition to B1, which was the predominant B chromosome in all nine populations, we found 15 other B variants, albeit at very low frequency. Eight variants were found in adults caught in the wild, four appeared in adults reared in the laboratory and seven were found in embryo progeny of controlled crosses between a 0B male and a B-carrying female. Some variants were found in more than one kind of material. At least the seven B variants that appeared in embryo progeny of females carrying a different B type arose de novo through mutation of the maternal B chromosome. The mutation rate of B chromosomes was 0.73%, on average, which explains the high variety of morphs and banding patterns found. The most frequent de novo mutations observed in these chromosomes were centromere misdivision with or without chromatid nondisjunction, which generates iso-B-chromosomes or telocentric Bs, respectively, as well as translocations with A and B chromosomes and deletions. But the whole variation observed, including that found in adult individuals, suggests that other mutations such as duplications, inversions and centric fusions do usually affect B chromosomes. Finally, B chromosome mutation rate was remarkably similar in both Moroccan and Spanish populations, which suggests that it might be dependent on B chromosome intrinsic factors.
