Abstract
The microanatomical features of the oesophageal gastric tract in tetrapod representatives and their function, especially those related to the mucosal layer, have not yet been fully investigated. The mucosal layer cells and their function in the oesophageal gastric tract differ structurally and functionally in tetrapod representatives based on interspecies difference and the type of food and feeding habits. The present study was, therefore, postulated to compare the mucosal microanatomical structure and histochemical biodistribution of different mucin types in oesophageal gastric tract tissues of four tetrapod species. A representative of each tetrapod class was selected, as follows: the Egyptian toad Bufo regularis, the lizard Trachylepis quinquetaeniata, the domestic pigeon Columba livia domestica and the albino mouse Mus musculus for Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves and Mammalia, respectively. Microanatomically, in lower tetrapods (toad and lizard), the mucosal layer of the oesophagus was composed of simple ciliated columnar epithelium with goblet cells, whereas in higher tetrapods (pigeon and mouse) it was composed of stratified squamous epithelium, with non-keratinised epithelium in the pigeon but keratinised epithelium in the mouse. However, the gastric mucosal layer of the stomach in lower tetrapods consists of simple columnar epithelium and gastric glands. Similarly, the mucosa of the pigeon's proventriculus consists of simple columnar epithelium with proventricular glands opened into the lumen, whereas mouse mucosa consists of simple columnar epithelium which folds and forms gastric glands with gastric pits having a variety of cell types. Histochemically, the neutral mucin profile biodistribution in the oesophagus mucosal layer was variable. It was strongly positive in the toad and lizard, but was weak in the pigeon and completely negative in the mouse. In contrast it was strongly positive in the gastric mucosa of the toad, lizard and pigeon, but was weak in the mouse's gastric mucosa. On the other hand, the signals of carboxylated and sulfated mucins were found to be different. They were strong in the mucosa of the lizard oesophagus. In contrast, the carboxylated mucins in the gastric mucosa were positive in all representatives except the mouse. The sulfated mucins were, however, seen localised in the mucosal layer cells of the lizard and pigeon only. The study revealed that the microanatomical structures and functions as well as mucin distribution profiles in the oesophageal gastric tract are in line with interspecies difference and the type of food and feeding habits. However, this may need further investigations including more tetrapod representatives.

Abstract
The Chinese giant salamander belongs to an old lineage of salamanders and endangered species. Many studies of breeding and disease regarding this amphibian had been implemented. However, the studies on the ultrastructure of this amphibian are rare. In this work, we provide a histological and ultra-structural investigation on posterior esophagus of Chinese giant salamander. The sections of amphibian esophagus were stained by hematoxylin & eosin (H&E). Moreover, the esophageal epithelium was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that esophageal epithelium was a single layer epithelium, which consisted of mucous cells and columnar cells. The esophageal glands were present in submucosa. The columnar cells were ciliated. According to the diverging ultrastructure of mucous vesicles, three types of mucous cells could be identified in the esophageal mucosa: i) electron-lucent vesicles mucous cell (ELV-MC); ii) electron-dense vesicles mucous cell (EDV-MC); and iii) mixed vesicles mucous cell (MV-MC).

Abstract
This study was carried out to assess the localization of hyaluronic acid (HA) and the distribution of glycoproteins in the gastrointestinal system of adult Hyla orientalis. Histochemical analysis of the gastrointestinal system in H. orientalis showed that mucous content included glycogene and/or oxidable dioles [periodic acid/Schiff (PAS)+], neutral or acid-rich (PAS/AB pH 2.5+), sialic acid residues (KOH/PAS+) and acid sulphate [Aldehyde fuchsin (AF)+] glycoproteins. However the mucus content was not the same in stomach, small and large intestine. The mucus content of stomach included only glycogene and/or oxidable dioles and sialic acid residues. Besides these histochemical methods, the localization of HA was detected using biotinylated hyaluronic acid binding protein labeled with streptavidin-fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC). In the extracellular matrix of the submucosa, the reaction for HA was evident. Since HA was located in submucosa beneath the epithelial layer of gastrointestinal system, it has a significant role in hydric balance, and essential to provide the gastrointestinal system integrity and functionality. According to biometric results, there were statistical differences between small and large intestine in terms of the amount of material stained positive with PAS/AB, PAS, KOH/PAS and AF/AB. Additionally, number of goblet cells in the small and large intestine was significantly different.

Abstract
The autonomic nervous system together with circulating and local hormones control secretion from glands. This article summarizes histochemical and functional studies on the autonomic innervation and control of secretory glands in non-mammalian vertebrates, including secretion of saliva in the mouth and gastric acid in the stomach, secretion of enzymes and bicarbonate from the pancreas and gut wall, secretion of mucus in the gut epithelium and onto the skin, and salt secretion from salt glands and rectal glands. Cholinergic and adrenergic nerves, directly or indirectly, in combination with different types of peptidergic and other nerves appear to innervate gland tissues and affect secretion in all investigated species.

Abstract
A multidisciplinary study involving lectin histochemistry, IHC, immuno-lectin blotting, and immunogold was carried out to determine the distribution of sugar residues in the glycoproteins of Rana esculenta oxynticopeptic cells. We considered animals in two experimental conditions, fasting and fed. It is known that, in mammals, the tubulovesicular membranes are rich in proteins with several functions. The proton pump H(+),K(+)-ATPase, a heterodimeric complex with a catalytic alpha-subunit and a heavily glycosylated beta-subunit, responsible for acid secretion, is the most abundant. No data have been published regarding the localization and the structures of H(+),K(+)-ATPase in amphibians. In the water frog, the luminal membrane and tubulovesicular system of oxynticopeptic cells, which differ in morphology according to their functional stage, reacted with the primary gold-conjugated antibody against the H(+),K(+)-ATPase alpha-subunit. By lectin histochemistry and immunoblotting, in the oxynticopeptic cells of R. esculenta we detected the presence of N-linked glycans having fucosylated (poly)lactosamine chains, which could correspond to the oligosaccharide chains of the beta subunit. The latter are somewhat different from those described in mammals, and this is probably because of an adaptation to the different microenvironmental conditions in which the oxynticopeptic cells find themselves, in terms of their different habits and phylogeny.

Abstract
Mucins in the gastrointestinal tract of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum were investigated by histochemistry and lectin histochemistry to evaluate morphofunctional variations of different regions and their possible physiological and evolutionary implications. Histochemical methods included periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), Alcian blue (AB) at pH 2.5 and 1.0 and high-iron-diamine AB pH 2.5. Binding of lectins Con A, DBA, WGA, LTA, LFA, PNA and SBA; LFA, PNA and SBA with prior sialidase treatment; and paradoxical Con A were evaluated. The oesophagus lacked glands. The stomach was divided into a short cardias, a wide fundus and a brief pylorus. The surface muciparous cells secreted sulpho- and sialomucins with N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) residues, N-acetyllactosamine and (beta1,4 N-acetylglucosamine)(n) chains. Towards the pylorus, N-acetylgalactosamine residues disappeared and acidity decreased. Cardiac glands, neck cells in the fundic glands, pyloric and duodenal Brunner's glands all shared neutral, stable class-III mucins, mainly with N-acetylgalactosamine sequences. The intestine was divided into a duodenum, a jejuno-ileum and a short rectum. The goblet cells produced sulpho- and sialomucins with sialylated N-acetylgalactosamine sequences, (beta1,4 N-acetylglucosamine)(n) and N-acetyllactosamine, whose sialylation increased towards the rectum. The main features of the mucins are probably associated with the requirements of fast absorption and food passage and in protection against mechanical and pathogenic injuries.

Abstract
In this study, the variety of sugar residues in the gut glycoconjugates of Triturus carnifex (Amphibia, Caudata) are investigated by carbohydrate conventional histochemistry and lectin histochemistry. The oesophageal surface mucous cells contained acidic glycoconjugates, with residues of GalNAc, Gal beta1,3 GalNAc and (GlcNAc beta1,4)(n) oligomers. The gastric surface cells mainly produced neutral glycoproteins with residues of fucose, Gal beta1-3 GalNAc, Gal-alphaGal, and (GlcNAc beta1,4)(n) oligomers in N- and O-linked glycans, as the glandular mucous neck cells, with residues of mannose/glucose, GalNAc, Gal beta1,3 GalNAc, (GlcNAc beta1,4)(n)oligomers and fucose linked alpha1,6 or terminal alpha1,3 or alpha1,4 in O-linked glycans. The oxynticopeptic tubulo-vesicular system contained neutral glycoproteins with N- and O-linked glycans with residues of Gal-alphaGal, Gal beta1-3 GalNAc and (GlcNAc beta1,4)(n)oligomers; Fuc linked alpha1,2 to Gal, alpha1,3 to GlcNAc in (poly)lactosamine chains and alpha1,6 to GlcNAc in N-linked glycans. Most of these glycoproteins probably corresponds to the H(+)K(+)-ATPase beta-subunit. The intestinal goblet cells contained acidic glycoconjugates, with residues of GalNAc, mannose/ glucose, (GlcNAc beta1,4)(n)oligomers and fucose linked alpha1,2 to Gal in O-linked oligosaccharides. The different composition of the mucus in the digestive tracts may be correlated with its different functions. In fact the presence of abundant sulphation of glycoconjugates, mainly in the oesophagus and intestine, probably confers resistance to bacterial enzymatic degradation of the mucus barrier.

Abstract
The gastric glands of Triturus carnifex (Amphibia, Caudata) have been examined by histochemical and immunohistochemical methods with particular regard to hydrochloric acid and pepsinogen secretion. Fundic glands consist of mucous neck cells, endocrine cells and oxynticopeptic cells producing both pepsinogen and hydrochloric acid. The neck cells showed an unexpected distribution pattern which was only observed in the oral fundus, and produced neutral mucins with glycosidic residues of GalNAc and Gal beta1,3GalNAc, and in this respect they differ from the neck cells of anuran amphibians. The secretion of pepsinogen and hydrochloric acid as demonstrated by immunolabelling with anti-H,K-ATPase and with anti-pepsinogen, respectively, seems not to vary significantly along the longitudinal axis of the stomach. The mechanism of gastric acid secretion seems to be mediated by an ATPase, having similar features to the mammalian gastric H,K-ATPase, and is localised in the luminal membrane and in the subapical cytoplasm of the oxynticopeptic cells. Unusually, the same cytoplasmic areas revealed binding specificity for the winged pea lectin (WPA) from Lotus tetragonolobus, even after beta elimination, indicating the presence of fucosyl residues in N-linked oligosaccharidic chains in glycoproteins of beta-H,K-ATPase subunits.
