Effect of X-ray irradiation on the biological parameters of Xestia c-nigrum

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is widely used to control Lepidopteran pests by inducing inherited sterility. The noctuid moth Xestia c-nigrum is a polyphagous pest whose subterranean larvae severely injure cereals and some vegetables. The goals of this study were to assess the impact of X-ray irradiation on the development and survival of X. c-nigrum and use the data to select suitable sterilizing doses for potential future use in pest management. Batches of male pupae were exposed to 0 (control), 10, 30, 50, 100, 200, 300, or 400 Gy of X-rays, approximately 24 h before adult emergence. Exposure of late-stage pupae to 10-200 Gy of radiation had no significant effect on adult emergence, but all doses (10-400 Gy) reduced adult longevity, the number of spermatophores in mated females, and the number of eggs laid per female in the irradiated parental generation compared with the controls. Exposure to 10 and 30 Gy had no significant effects in the F1 generation on 1) the rate of egg hatch, 2) the duration of larval or pupal development, or 3) adult longevity. However, exposure to 50 Gy reduced the rate of egg hatch in the F1 generation, and when male pupae were exposed to 100 Gy only 1% of the F1 eggs hatched. Also at 100 Gy, the developmental durations of larvae and pupae were significantly prolonged, and longevity of adult moths was reduced. There were no significant differences between the control group and any treatments in 1) the sex ratio of the F1 adults, 2) the duration of F1 pre-oviposition or oviposition periods, or 3) the number of eggs laid per F1 female. Our findings indicate that a dose of 100 Gy can effectively slow pest development and reduce larval survival in the F1 generation. In addition, F1 adults from lines treated with 100 Gy were able to mate and lay eggs, but all F2 eggs failed to hatch. Our results suggest that use of X-ray irradiation has potential to control this polyphagous pest at the regional level.

Susceptibility of Diaphorina citri to Irradiation with UV-A and UV-B and the Applicability of the Bunsen-Roscoe Reciprocity Law

Populations of Diaphorina citri decline with elevation and, in a study in Bhutan, were rarely found above 1200 m ASL. The impact of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, particularly UV-B, on immature stages of the psyllid was proposed as limiting factor. As no studies have been undertaken on the influences of UV radiation on the development of D. citri, we examined the effects of UV-A and UV-B on different stadia of the psyllid. In addition, compliance with the Bunsen-Roscoe reciprocity law was examined. Irradiation with UV-A marginally reduced egg hatch and the survival times of emerging nymphs. Early instar nymphs were little affected by this waveband, but the survival of adults was reduced at the higher doses used. With UV-B, egg hatch and the survival times of early and late instar nymphs declined in proportion to UV-B dose. A dose of 57.6 kJ m^-2 d^-1 reduced the survival time of only adult females. Female fecundity was reduced at high UV-A and UV-B doses but increased at low doses. The Bunsen-Roscoe law held true for eggs and early instar nymphs for different durations and irradiances of UV-B. Eggs and nymphs had ED₅₀ values for UV-B lower than the daily fluxes of this wavelength experienced worldwide. Thus, UV-B could be a factor causing the psyllid to be scarce at high elevations.

Low-dose ionizing radiation as a hormetin: experimental observations and therapeutic perspective for age-related disorders

Hormesis is any kind of biphasic dose-response when low doses of some agents are beneficial while higher doses are detrimental. Radiation hormesis is the most thoroughly investigated among all hormesis-like phenomena, in particular in biogerontology. In this review, we aimed to summarize research evidence supporting hormesis through exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR). Radiation-induced longevity hormesis has been repeatedly reported in invertebrate models such as C. elegans, Drosophila and flour beetles and in vertebrate models including guinea pigs, mice and rabbits. On the contrary, suppressing natural background radiation was repeatedly found to cause detrimental effects in protozoa, bacteria and flies. We also discussed here the possibility of clinical use of LDIR, predominantly for age-related disorders, e.g., Alzheimer's disease, for which no remedies are available. There is accumulating evidence that LDIR, such as those commonly used in X-ray imaging including computer tomography, might act as a hormetin. Of course, caution should be exercised when introducing new medical practices, and LDIR therapy is no exception. However, due to the low average residual life expectancy in old patients, the short-term benefits of such interventions (e.g., potential therapeutic effect against dementia) may outweigh their hypothetical delayed risks (e.g., cancer). We argue here that assessment and clinical trials of LDIR treatments should be given priority bearing in mind the enormous economic, social and ethical implications of potentially-treatable, age-related disorders.

Drosophila melanogaster show a threshold effect in response to radiation

We investigate the biological effects of radiation using adult Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism, focusing on gene expression and lifespan analysis to determine the effect of different radiation doses. Our results support a threshold effect in response to radiation: no effect on lifespan and no permanent effect on gene expression is seen at incident radiation levels below 100 J/kg. We also find that it is more appropriate to compare radiation effects in flies using the absorbed energy rather than incident radiation levels.

The effects of enhanced ultraviolet-B radiation on the biology of green and brown morphs of Sitobion avenae (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

The effects of enhanced UV-B radiation on the biology of green and brown morphs of Sitobion avenae (F.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) were tested under laboratory conditions. The two S. avenae morphs were exposed directly to different doses (0, 216, 432, and 864 kJ/m(2)) of artificial UV-B. Under low doses of UV-B (216 kJ/m(2)), the nymphal development period was significantly shorter, whereas mean relative growth, total fecundity, and gross reproductive rate were significantly higher for both aphid morphs compared with those morphs under control treatments (0 kJ/m(2)). Under high doses of UV-B (432 kJ/m(2) and/or 864 kJ/m(2)), the nymphal development period was significantly longer, whereas the reproductive period, postreproductive period, difference in weight, mean relative growth, and life table parameters were significantly reduced for both aphid morphs. Moreover, the nymphal development period was significantly shorter and the differences in weight, mean relative growth, total fecundity, and life table parameters were significantly higher for the brown morph under high doses of UV-B compared with the green morph. The results showed that enhanced UV-B affects the performance of the green and brown S. avenae morphs from positively to negatively. The brown morph exhibited stronger adaptability than the green morph at high doses of UV-B.
