Self-regulation as a resource for coping with developmental challenges during middle childhood and adolescence: the prospective longitudinal PIERYOUTH-study

BACKGROUND

Self-regulation (SR) as the ability to regulate one's own physical state, emotions, cognitions, and behavior, is considered to play a pivotal role in the concurrent and subsequent mental and physical health of an individual. Although SR skills encompass numerous sub-facets, previous research has often focused on only one or a few of these sub-facets, and only rarely on adolescence. Therefore, little is known about the development of the sub-facets, their interplay, and their specific contributions to future developmental outcomes, particularly in adolescence. To fill these research gaps, this study aims to prospectively examine (1) the development of SR and (2) their influence on adolescent-specific developmental outcomes in a large community sample.

METHODS/DESIGN

Based on previously collected data from the Potsdam Intrapersonal Developmental Risk (PIER) study with three measurement points, the present prospective, longitudinal study aims to add a fourth measurement point (PIER_YOUTH). We aim to retain at least 1074 participants now between 16 and 23 years of the initially 1657 participants (6-11 years of age at the first measurement point in 2012/2013; 52.2% female). The study will continue to follow a multi-method (questionnaires, physiological assessments, performance-based computer tasks), multi-facet (assessing various domains of SR), and multi-rater (self-, parent-, and teacher-report) approach. In addition, a broad range of adolescent-specific developmental outcomes is considered. In doing so, we will cover the development of SR and relevant outcomes over the period of 10 years. In addition, we intend to conduct a fifth measurement point (given prolonged funding) to investigate development up to young adulthood.

DISCUSSION

With its broad and multimethodological approach, PIER_YOUTH aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the development and role of various SR sub-facets from middle childhood to adolescence. The large sample size and low drop-out rates in the first three measurements points form a sound database for our present prospective research. Secular Trend of Self-Concept in the Context of Childhood Obesity-Data from the CHILT III Programme, Cologne

Juvenile obesity is associated with a lower self-concept. Given the continued prevalence of obesity, we examined the secular trend of body mass index standard deviation score (BMI-SDS) and self-concept in participants of a German weight management programme (n = 242, 53.3% female, mean age 12.5 ± 2.1 years, mean BMI-SDS 2.45 ± 0.46) over a period of 15 years. Anthropometric data, physical fitness (watt/kg), and demographic data were assessed. The years 2005 to 2020 were grouped into six sections containing a mean of n = 40 participants. The questionnaire for the assessment of self and competence in children (FSK-K) was used to assess the following domains: "scholastic competence", "social competence", "physical appearance", "global self-worth", and "behavioural conduct". No significant between-group differences in self-assessment across self-concept domains were found. In all time periods, heavier children assigned the lowest rating to physical appearance. Social competence increased with higher physical fitness. Even though no negative trend in the self-concept of children with obesity was found in this cohort, the findings confirmed an association between juvenile overweight/obesity and lower physical self-concept, and between a better social competence and increasing physical fitness. Accompanying psychosocial care, therefore, rightly remains an important pillar of obesity therapy.

Cognitive and emotional functioning in binge-eating disorder: A systematic review

OBJECTIVE

Binge-eating disorder (BED) is characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating and is associated with eating disorder and general psychopathology and overweight/obesity. Deficits in cognitive and emotional functioning for eating disorders or obesity have been reported. However, a systematic review on cognitive and emotional functioning for individuals with BED is lacking.

METHOD

A systematic literature search was conducted across three databases (Medline, PubMed, and PsycINFO). Overall, n = 57 studies were included in the present review.

RESULTS

Regarding cognitive functioning (CoF), individuals with BED consistently demonstrated higher information processing biases compared to obese and normal-weight controls in the context of disorder-related stimuli (i.e., food and body cues), whereas CoF in the context of neutral stimuli appeared to be less affected. Thus, results suggest disorder-related rather than general difficulties in CoF in BED. With respect to emotional functioning (EmF), individuals with BED reported difficulties similar to individuals with other eating disorders, with a tendency to show less severe difficulties in some domains. In addition, individuals with BED reported greater emotional deficits when compared to obese and normal-weight controls. Findings suggest general difficulties in EmF in BED. Thus far, however, investigations of EmF in disorder-relevant situations are lacking.

DISCUSSION

Overall, the cross-sectional findings indicate BED to be associated with difficulties in CoF and EmF. Future research should determine the nature of these difficulties, in regards to general and disorder-related stimuli, and consider interactions of both domains to foster the development and improvement of appropriate interventions in BED.

Entwicklung der Fünf-Item-Kurzskala STAI-SKD zur Messung von Zustandsangst

Zusammenfassung. Das State-Trait-Angstinventar (STAI) ist eines der am häufigsten eingesetzten Erhebungsinstrumente im Bereich der Angstdiagnostik. Die STAI-Skala zur Erfassung von Zustandsangst umfasst 20 Items. Unter bestimmten Erhebungsbedingungen erweist es sich als relativ schwierig, eine große Menge an Items zu bearbeiten oder aber es steht nicht ausreichend Testzeit zur Verfügung. Daher war es das Ziel der vorliegenden Studie, eine Kurzform der State-Version des STAI zu entwickeln. An einer Stichprobe von N = 65 Studierenden wurde aufgrund inhaltlicher und statistischer Kriterien eine Kurzform der State-Version des STAI, das STAI-SKD, mit fünf Items generiert. Eine konfirmatorische Faktorenanalyse an einer zweiten Stichprobe von N = 191 Studierenden zeigte, dass das STAI-SKD die Angstkomponenten Emotionality und Worry abbildet. Die Beziehungen des STAI-SKD zu positivem und negativem Affekt sowie dessen Veränderungssensitivität fielen in einer dritten Stichprobe (N = 80 Studierende) erwartungsgemäß aus. Die neue Kurzform der State-Version des STAI erlaubt eine ökonomische Erfassung der Zustandsangst.

[Psychological aspects of obesity. Consquences for content, indication, and success of therapy]

To simply reduce obesity to the medical set of problems falls short due to the complexity of the disorder. The focus of the affected children and adolescents is less on acute and future somatic health impairments but on the psychosocial aspects of obesity. The high degree of stigmatization especially accounts for the psychosocial burdens of the persons concerned. Constraints in the quality of life and a higher prevalence of mental disorders are reported by overweight and obese children and adolescents. In the sense of a vicious psychosocial circle, these variables in turn influence our eating and exercise behavior and hence central influences of weight control actions. Therefore, complex multimodal programs, which take into account these relationships, have long since been established in therapy. Numerous studies have underscored the efficacy of such lifestyle interventions resulting in moderate weight loss effects. Parent involvement and including behavioral strategies is associated with better results. Future studies should focus more on various psychosocial outcomes and addressing the question of psychosocial predictors of short- and long-term treatment success.

Trends und Anwendungsgebiete der Klinischen Kinderpsychologie

Zusammenfassung: Die noch junge Disziplin der Klinischen Kinderpsychologie zeigt in verschiedenen Anwendungsgebieten erhebliche Fortschritte auf. Im Detail werden ausgeführt: Entwicklungs- und Intelligenzdiagnostik, Betreuung chronisch kranker Kinder und Jugendlicher, Essstörungen und Adipositas, ADHS, Lernstörungen, familienorientierte Diagnostik und Therapie sowie Qualitätssicherung in der psychotherapeutischen Versorgung. Einige Konzepte (z. B. ADHS) besitzen eine immer größere Bedeutung in der Psychiatrie und Klinischen Psychologie des Erwachsenenalters. Die entwicklungsorientierte Denkweise kann als zukunftsweisend für die Psychotherapie und Psychiatrie angesehen werden.

The unhappy obese child

OBJECTIVE

One of the most painful aspects of obesity may be the emotional suffering it causes. The paper discusses the psychological and social effects of obesity.

METHOD

Current studies examining the psychosocial strains of obese children and adolescents are reported. The report especially focuses on stigmatization, mental health disorders, school performance and health-related quality of life.

DISCUSSION

Research is showing that obesity is associated with poorer psychosocial functioning even compared with other chronic diseases. Future studies should further explicate the risk and protective factors for developing severe psychosocial strain.
