The role of audience participation and task relevance on change detection during a card trick

Magicians utilize many techniques for misdirecting audience attention away from the secret sleight of a trick. One technique is to ask an audience member to participate in a trick either physically by asking them to choose a card or cognitively by having them keep track of a card. While such audience participation is an established part of most magic the cognitive mechanisms by which it operates are unknown. Failure to detect changes to objects while passively viewing magic tricks has been shown to be conditional on the changing feature being irrelevant to the current task. How change blindness operates during interactive tasks is unclear but preliminary evidence suggests that relevance of the changing feature may also play a role (Triesch et al., 2003). The present study created a simple on-line card trick inspired by Triesch et al.’s (2003) that allowed playing cards to be instantaneously replaced without distraction or occlusion as participants were either actively sorting the cards (Doing condition) or watching another person perform the task (Watching conditions). Participants were given one of three sets of instructions. The relevance of the card color to the task increased across the three instructions. During half of the trials a card changed color (but retained its number) as it was moving to the stack. Participants were instructed to immediately report such changes. Analysis of the probability of reporting a change revealed that actively performing the sorting task led to more missed changes than passively watching the same task but only when the changing feature was irrelevant to the sorting task. If the feature was relevant during either the pick-up or put-down action change detection was as good as during the watching block. These results confirm the ability of audience participation to create subtle dynamics of attention and perception during a magic trick and hide otherwise striking changes at the center of attention.

Comparison of interstimulus intervals on change detection in nondriving and driving scenarios

Change detection across disruptions of visual scenes is typically studied using brief durations of the interstimulus interval (ISI) (i.e., up to 300 ms). We investigated change detection across durations that approximate longer, voluntary glances away from a visual scene (i.e., 500-2,000 ms), which are often actualized in driving situations. Experiment 1 found that in nondriving scenarios, change detection performance, as measured by accuracy and response time, decreased as ISI increased. Experiment 2 found that in driving scenarios, change detection for plausible changes also decreased as the ISI increased, but there was no similar decrease in performance for implausible changes. Both Experiments 1 and 2 showed that the necessary number of exposures to the change decreased as ISIs approximated voluntary glances, suggesting that change detection strategies may be modified at longer ISI durations.

Reinstating salience effects over time: the influence of stimulus changes on visual selection behavior over a sequence of eye movements

Recently, we showed that salience affects initial saccades only in a static stimulus environment; subsequent saccades were unaffected by salience but, instead, were directed in line with task requirements (Siebold, van Zoest, & Donk, PLoS ONE 6(9): e23552, 2011). Yet multiple studies have shown that people tend to fixate salient regions more often than nonsalient ones when they are looking at images--in particular, when salience is defined by dynamic changes. The goal of the present study was to investigate how oculomotor selection beyond an initial saccade is affected by salience as derived from changing, as opposed to static, stimuli. Observers were presented with displays containing two fixation dots, one target, one distractor, and multiple background elements. They were instructed to fixate on one of the fixation dots and make a speeded eye movement to the target, either directly or preceded by an initial eye movement to the other fixation dot. In Experiment 1, target and distractor differed in orientation contrast relative to the background, such that one was more salient than the other, whereas in Experiments 2 and 3, the orientation contrast between the two elements was identical. Here, salience was implemented by a continuous luminance flicker or by a difference in luminance contrast, respectively, which was presented either simultaneously with display onset or contingent upon the first saccade. The results showed that in all experiments, initial saccades were strongly guided by salience, whereas second saccades were consistently goal directed if the salience manipulation was present from display onset. However, if the flicker or luminance contrast was presented contingent upon the initial saccade, salience effects were reinstated. We argue that salience effects are short-lived but can be reinstated if new information is presented, even when this occurs during an eye movement.

Non-transient luminance changes do not capture attention

The processing of luminance change is a ubiquitous feature of the human visual system and provides the basis for the rapid orienting of attention to potentially important events (e.g., motion onset, object onset). However, despite its importance for attentional capture, it is not known whether a luminance change attracts attention solely because of its status as a sensory transient or can attract attention at a relatively high cognitive level. In a series of six experiments, we presented visual displays in which a single object underwent a luminance change that was either visible or obscured by a mask. A target then appeared either at the change location or elsewhere. The results showed that the luminance change attracted attention only in the visible condition. This was even observed with the largest change we could generate (> 75 cd/m(2)). These data suggest that the importance of a luminance change is only in its status as a low-level sensory transient.

Attentional capture by object appearance and disappearance

In two experiments we examined whether the appearance of a new object has attentional priority over disappearance. Previous failures to show differences are possibly due to onsets and offsets always being presented as a sole visual transient. Rather than presenting each alone, we presented onset and offset singletons simultaneously with a display-wide luminance transient in order to force each to compete with other visual events. Results from Experiment 1 showed that targets associated with onsets accrued a reaction time benefit whilst targets associated with offsets did not. Experiment 2 showed that onsets attracted attention even when observers were attentionally set to look for offset. By contrast, offsets needed a relevant attentional set in order to attract attention. We argue that the appearance of an object has attentional priority over disappearance.
