Risk-Taking Behavior Among Male Adolescents: The Role of Observer Presence and Individual Self-Control

A number of studies have focused on the same-sex peer effect on and the developmental difference in adolescent risk-taking in terms of the dual systems model. Little research, however, addresses the effects of different observers, the role of different levels of individual self-control, and their interactions. To fill this gap, the present study examined the main and interactive effects of observer presence and individual self-control on male adolescents' risk-taking behavior with an experimental design. A total of 261 male adolescents (M_age = 15.79 ± 0.79, range = 14-18) completed an adapted Stoplight Task, which measures risk-taking behavior, in the presence of an observer, either peer or adult, either male or female. The results indicated that a same-sex peer's presence and low self-control were both risk factors of male adolescents' risk-taking, but did only low self-control male adolescents take serious risks when in the presence of a same-sex peer whereas those with high self-control consistently had low levels of risk-taking under any condition. An opposite-sex observer, particularly an opposite-sex adult's presence, played a similar protective role for male adolescents with low self-control. The findings suggest that a high level of self-control closely related to the cognitive control system may significantly buffer the negative effect of an adverse social stimulus which activates the social-emotional system on male adolescents' risk-taking; the findings also reveal that an opposite-sex adult's presence may contribute to a decrease in male adolescents' risk-taking by improving their cognitive control system.

Impact of time of day on radiology image interpretations

AIM

To examine the impact of the time of day on radiologists' mammography reading performance.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Retrospective mammographic reading assessment data were collected from the BreastScreen Reader Assessment Strategy database and included timestamps of the readings and reader-specific demographic data of 197 radiologists. The radiologists performed the readings in a workshop setting with test case sets enriched with malignancies (one-third of cases were malignant). The collected data were evaluated with an analysis of covariance to determine whether time of day influenced radiologists' specificity, lesion sensitivity or the jackknife alternative free-response receiver operating characteristic (JAFROC).

RESULTS

After adjusting for radiologist experience and fellowship, specificity varied significantly by time of day (p=0.027), but there was no evidence of any significant impact on lesion sensitivity (p=0.441) or JAFROC (p=0.120). The collected data demonstrated that specificity during the late morning (10.00-12.00) was 71.7%; this was significantly lower than in the early morning (08.00-10.00) and mid-afternoon (14.00-16.00), which were 82.74% (p=0.003) and 81.39% (p=0.031), respectively. Specificity during the late afternoon (16.00-18.00) was 73.95%; this was significantly lower than in the early morning (08.00-10.00) and mid-afternoon (14.00-16.00), which were 82.74% (p=0.003) and 81.39% (p=0.031), respectively.

CONCLUSION

The results indicated that the time of day may influence radiologists' performance, specifically their ability to identify normal images correctly.

Time of Day and Hearing Aid Adoption

To date, there is little understanding of how contextual factors may influence the decisions individuals make regarding the adoption of options for hearing rehabilitation. This explorative retrospective study investigated whether hearing aid adoption and return rates are associated with the time of the day at which an appointment takes place. The study sample consisted of 24,842 patients experiencing their first audiology appointment. It was observed that hearing aid adoption was significantly associated with appointment times whereby lower hearing aid adoption rates were observed at noon and 4 p.m. It was also observed that hearing aid return rates were significantly associated with appointment times whereby lower return rates were observed at noon and 4 p.m. In light of the methodology employed in the study, it is not possible to unequivocally determine why time of day is associated with hearing aid adoption and return rates. Several possible explanations for the patterns of associations are discussed. In light of previous research observing that hunger lowers risk tolerance and glucose consumption increases risk tolerance, the results are consistent with an interpretation based on risk-aversion resulting from hunger. To establish causality between hunger and decision-making in audiology, additional research employing experimental methodologies are necessary.
