Abstract
The effect of crystal-water contents on the optical properties and dielectric characteristics of calcium sulfate in the THz band is investigated. The complex dielectric constant and conductivity are analyzed using the Drude-Smith model. The refractive index and absorption coefficient are linearly increased with the content of crystal-water, and the corresponding linear fitting lines of R2 over 0.97 are obtained. The dielectric properties of calcium sulfate are significantly affected by the crystal-water content. These results indicate that a new method to quantitative measurement of the crystal-water content in hydrous minerals is provided.

Abstract
This cutting-edge study delves into regional magmatism in northern Taiwan through advanced 3-D P- and S-wave frequency-dependent attenuation tomography. Positioned at the dynamic convergence boundary between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate, Taiwan experiences moderate earthquakes and intriguing volcanic activity, with a focus on the Tatun volcano group. Employing the Formosa seismic array for high-resolution results, our research identifies high-attenuation anomalies (low Q) beneath the northern Taiwan volcanic zone (NTVZ) and offshore submarine volcanoes, indicative of potential hydrothermal activities and magma reservoirs at varying depths. Additionally, we explore low-attenuation anomalies (high Q) in the forearc region of the Ryukyu subduction zone, suggestive of partial saturation linked to serpentinization processes resulting from seawater infiltration or forearc mantle hydration. These findings shed light on the complex geological features and provide essential insights into the crustal properties of northern Taiwan, contributing to a deeper understanding of its magmatic evolution and tectonic processes.

Abstract
Water molecules play a very important role in the hydration and dehydration process of hydrates, which may lead to distinct physical and chemical properties, affecting their availability in practical applications. However, miniaturized, integrated sensors capable of the rapid, sensitive sensing of water molecules in the hydrate are still lacking, limiting their proliferation. Here, we realize the high-sensitivity sensing of water molecules in copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O), based on an on-chip terahertz whispering gallery mode resonator (THz-WGMR) fabricated on silicon material via CMOS-compatible technologies. An integrated THz-WGMR with a high-Q factor of 3305 and a resonance frequency of 410.497 GHz was proposed and fabricated. Then, the sensor was employed to distinguish the CuSO4·xH2O (x = 5, 3, 1). The static characterization from the CuSO4·5H2O to the copper sulfate trihydrate (CuSO4·3H2O) experienced blueshifts of 0.55 GHz/μmol, whereas the dehydration process of CuSO4·3H2O to copper sulfate monohydrate (CuSO4·H2O) exhibited blueshifts of 0.21 GHz/μmol. Finally, the dynamic dehydration processes of CuSO4·5H2O to CuSO4·3H2O at different temperatures were monitored. We believe that our proposed THz-WGMR sensors with highly sensitive substance identification capabilities can provide a versatile and integrated platform for studying the transformation between substances, contributing to hydrated/crystal water-assisted biochemical applications.

Abstract
Lateral variations of seismic wave speeds and attenuation (dissipation of strain energy) in the Earth's upper mantle have the potential to map key characteristics such as temperature, major-element composition, melt fraction and water content. The inversion of these data into meaningful representations of physical properties requires a robust understanding of the micromechanical processes that affect the propagation of seismic waves. Structurally bound water (hydroxyl) is believed to affect seismic properties but this has yet to be experimentally quantified. Here we present a comprehensive low-frequency forced-oscillation assessment of the seismic properties of olivine as a function of water content within the under-saturated regime that is relevant to the Earth's interior. Our results demonstrate that wave speeds and attenuation are in fact strikingly insensitive to water content. Rather, the redox conditions imposed by the choice of metal sleeving, and the associated defect chemistry, appear to have a substantial influence on the seismic properties. These findings suggest that elevated water contents are not responsible for low-velocity or high-attenuation structures in the upper mantle. Instead, the high attenuation observed in hydrous and oxidized regions of the upper mantle (such as above subduction zones) may reflect the prevailing oxygen fugacity. In addition, these data provide no support for the hypothesis whereby a sharp lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary is explained by enhanced grain boundary sliding in the presence of water.

Abstract
Magnetotelluric and seismic data, collected during the MELT experiment at the southern East Pacific Rise, constrain the distribution of melt beneath this mid-ocean-ridge spreading centre and also the evolution of the oceanic lithosphere during its early cooling history. Here we focus on structures imaged at distances approximately 100 to 350 km east of the ridge crest, corresponding to seafloor ages of approximately 1.3 to 4.5 million years (Myr), where the seismic and electrical conductivity structure is nearly constant and independent of age. Beginning at a depth of about 60 km, we image a large increase in electrical conductivity and a change from isotropic to transversely anisotropic electrical structure, with higher conductivity in the direction of fast propagation for seismic waves. Conductive cooling models predict structure that increases in depth with age, extending to about 30 km at 4.5 Myr ago. We infer, however, that the structure of young oceanic plates is instead controlled by a decrease in water content above a depth of 60 km induced by the melting process beneath the spreading centre.
