Dissociation of H2O2 on water surfaces (ice and water droplets)

OH radicals are an important constituent of the atmosphere. Therefore, all reactions that act as a source of OH radicals are important. It is known that photo-dissociation of H2O2 is an important source of OH radicals in the atmosphere. In the present study, using Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations, we have shown that the H2O2 molecule can dissociate thermally on water droplets, as well as on the surface of ice, to form OH radicals. Furthermore, the dissociation of H2O2 was found to be very fast (less than 50 fs) on the ice surface compared with on the water droplets. We believe this route for the formation of OH radicals could be more critical than photo-dissociation, as it can take place both during the day and at night, but further studies with more sophisticated theoretical approaches or experiments are required to confirm this hypothesis.

Freezing-enhanced oxidation of iodide by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of antifreeze proteins from the Arctic yeast Leucosporidium sp.AY30

Ice-binding proteins (IBPs), originating from Arctic or Antarctic microorganisms, have freeze-inhibiting characteristics, allowing these organisms to survive in polar regions. Despite their significance in polar environments, the mechanism through which IBPs affect the chemical reactions in ice by controlling ice crystal formation has not yet been reported. In this study, a new mechanism for iodide (I^-) activation into triiodide (I₃^-), which is the abundant iodine species in seawater, by using hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) in a frozen solution with IBPs was developed. A significant enhancement of I^- activation into I₃^- was observed in the presence of Arctic-yeast-originating extracellular ice-binding glycoprotein (LeIBP) isolated from Leucosporidium sp. AY30, and a further increase in the I₃^- concentration was observed with the introduction of H₂O₂ to the frozen solution (25 times higher than in the aqueous solution after 24 h of reaction). The reaction in the ice increased with an increase in LeIBP concentration. The in-situ pH measurement in ice using cresol red (CR) revealed protons accumulated in the ice grain boundaries by LeIBP. However, the presence of LeIBP did not influence the acidity of the ice. The enhanced freeze concentration effect of H₂O₂ by LeIBP indicated that larger ice granules were formed in the presence of LeIBP. The results suggest that LeIBP affects the formation and morphology of ice granules, which reduces the total volume of ice boundaries throughout the ice. This leads to an increased local concentration of I^- and H₂O₂ within the ice grain boundaries. IBP-assisted production of gaseous iodine in a frozen environment provides a previously unrecognized formation mechanism of active iodine species in the polar regions.

Photo-Fenton effect of 4-chlorophenol in ice

The photoconversion of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) in a simulated sunlight-Fenton system was investigated in ice and aqueous solution. It was found that the hydroxyl radical (OH) had an important effect on the photoconversion of 4-CP in both phases, but the effects of Cl(-), SO4(2-), NO3(-), and HCO3(-) were different. In aqueous solution, the photoconversion efficiency of 4-CP was proportional to the OH concentration, and hence, Cl(-) and HCO3(-) as OH scavengers prohibited the photoconversion; SO4(2-) had little effect; NO3(-) promoted the process under certain conditions owing to OH being generated by the photolysis of NO3(-). In ice, however, the photoconversion efficiency of 4-CP was not proportional to the concentration of OH. The photoconversion efficiency of 4-CP increased with increasing concentrations of all ions, although the OH remained almost constant, only increasing or decreasing slightly. This provides new evidence for the presence of a quasi-liquid layer (QLL). Hydroxylation products were detected in both phases. All photoproducts in aqueous solution contained only a single benzene ring, whereas in ice, dimers were also detected.

Oxidation of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons by OH radicals photochemically generated from H2O2 in ice

Oxidation of aromatic and saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons (c = 10(-3)-10(-5) mol L(-1)) by the hydroxyl radicals, photochemically produced from hydrogen peroxide (c = 10(-1)-10(-5) mol L(-1)), in frozen aqueous solutions was investigated in the temperature range of -20 to -196 degrees C. While aromatic molecules (benzene, phenol, naphthalene, naphthalen-2-ol, or anthracene) underwent primarily addition-elimination reactions to form the corresponding hydroxy compounds, saturated hydrocarbons (cyclohexane, butane, methane) were oxidized to alcohols or carbonyl compounds via hydrogen abstraction and termination reactions. The results suggest that these photoreactions, taking place in a highly concentrated liquid or solidified layers covering the ice crystals, are qualitatively similar to those known to occur in liquid aqueous solutions; however, that probability of any bimolecular reaction in the environment ultimately depends on organic contaminant concentrations and oxidants availability at specific locations of the ice matrix, temperature, wavelength, and photon flux. They, moreover, support hypotheses that oxidation of organic impurities in the snowpack can produce volatile hydroxy and carbonyl compounds, which may consequently be released to the atmosphere.

Production of hydrogen peroxide in the atmosphere of a Snowball Earth and the origin of oxygenic photosynthesis

During Proterozoic time, Earth experienced two intervals with one or more episodes of low-latitude glaciation, which are probable "Snowball Earth" events. Although the severity of the historical glaciations is debated, theoretical "hard Snowball" conditions are associated with the nearly complete shutdown of the hydrological cycle. We show here that, during such long and severe glacial intervals, a weak hydrological cycle coupled with photochemical reactions involving water vapor would give rise to the sustained production of hydrogen peroxide. The photochemical production of hydrogen peroxide has been proposed previously as the primary mechanism for oxidizing the surface of Mars. During a Snowball, hydrogen peroxide could be stored in the ice; it would then be released directly into the ocean and the atmosphere upon melting and could mediate global oxidation events in the aftermath of the Snowball, such as that recorded in the Fe and Mn oxides of the Kalahari Manganese Field, deposited after the Paleoproterozoic low-latitude Makganyene glaciation. Low levels of peroxides and molecular oxygen generated during Archean and earliest Proterozoic non-Snowball glacial intervals could have driven the evolution of oxygen-mediating and -using enzymes and thereby paved the way for the eventual appearance of oxygenic photosynthesis.

Formation of Hydroxyl Radical from the Photolysis of Frozen Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide (HOOH) in ice and snow is an important chemical tracer for the oxidative capacities of past atmospheres. However, photolysis in ice and snow will destroy HOOH and form the hydroxyl radical (*OH), which can react with snowpack trace species. Reactions of *OH in snow and ice will affect the composition of both the overlying atmosphere (e.g., by the release of volatile species such as formaldehyde to the boundary layer) and the snow and ice (e.g., by the *OH-mediated destruction of trace organics). To help understand these impacts, we have measured the quantum yield of *OH from the photolysis of HOOH on ice. Our measured quantum yields (Phi(HOOH --> *OH)) are independent of ionic strength, pH, and wavelength, but are dependent upon temperature. This temperature dependence for both solution and ice data is best described by the relationship ln(Phi(HOOH --> *OH)) = -(684 +/- 17)(1/T) + (2.27 +/- 0.064) (where errors represent 1 standard error). The corresponding activation energy (Ea) for HOOH (5.7 kJ mol(-1)) is much smaller than that for nitrate photolysis, indicating that the photochemistry of HOOH is less affected by changes in temperature. Using our measured quantum yields, we calculate that the photolytic lifetimes of HOOH in surface snow grains under midday, summer solstice sunlight are approximately 140 h at representative sites on the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. In addition, our calculations reveal that the majority of *OH radicals formed on polar snow grains are from HOOH photolysis, while nitrate photolysis is only a minor contributor. Similarly, HOOH appears to be much more important than nitrate as a photochemical source of *OH on cirrus ice clouds, where reactions of the photochemically formed hydroxyl radical could lead to the release of oxygenated volatile organic compounds to the upper troposphere.

Comparison of the effects of UV, H2O2/UV and gamma-irradiation processes on frozen and liquid water solutions of monochlorophenols

The effects of UV irradiation, both in the presence and absence of hydrogen peroxide, as well as of gamma irradiation on 2- and 4-chlorophenol in a solid water ice matrix have been studied and compared to those effects known to occur in aqueous solutions. While UV photolysis (>280 nm) of monochlorophenols leads to efficient coupling reactions in ice and photosolvolysis products in liquid water; hydroxylation to chlorobenzenediols is the main pathway in the presence of H2O2 in both phases. The results show that the solute molecules accumulate in a layer surrounding the ice crystal walls during the freezing process, where they then react. The radiation chemistry of chlorophenol ice samples involves preferential coupling reactions at -78 degrees C rather than reactions with the OH radicals produced by cleavage of water molecules under the conditions employed (1 kGy h(-1)). The apparent similarities between the chemistry in the UV/H2O2-treated liquid and solid, and y-irradiated liquid and solid samples are discussed. It is suggested that the reactions of OH radicals within polycrystalline ice or snow are important natural processes that should be considered in environmental, ice-core or astrophysical research.
