Aerosol Nutrients and Their Biological Influence on the Northwest Pacific Ocean (NWPO) and Its Marginal Seas

With intensifying human activities in the past decades, East Asia has recorded increasingly severe air pollution and become the second largest aerosol source on earth. The large quantity of aerosol emissions is not only a major health threat to humans, but can also be transported for a long distance and deposited in downwind seas and oceans. The aerosol contains major ions, heavy metals, and organic matters that are important external nutrients in upper oceans and potentially influence marine microbes and biogeochemical cycles. Therefore, the role of atmospheric deposition to oceans has received growing attention in recent years. In this paper, the current state of knowledge on the atmospheric nutrients and the biological effect of East Asian aerosol deposition on the northwest Pacific Ocean are reviewed, which could help us better understand the comprehensive influence of East Asian aerosols on marine ecosystems, and give insights into future research directions, especially under the future scenarios of changing human activities and climate.

Abstract

Atmospheric deposition is recognized as a significant source of nutrients in the surface ocean. The East Asia region is among the largest sources of aerosol emissions in the world, due to its large industrial, agricultural, and energy production. Thus, East Asian aerosols contain a large proportion of anthropogenic particles that are characterized by small size, complex composition, and high nutrient dissolution, resulting in important influences on marine microbes and biogeochemical cycles in the downwind areas of the northwest Pacific Ocean (NWPO). By using remote sensing, modeling, and incubation experimental methods, enhanced primary production due to the East Asian aerosol input has been observed in the NWPO, with subsequent promotion and inhibition impacts on different phytoplankton taxa. Changes of bacterial activity and diversity also occur in response to aerosol input. The impact of East Asian aerosol loadings is closely related to the amount and composition of the aerosol deposition as well as the hydrological condition of the receiving seawater. Here, we review the current state of knowledge on the atmospheric nutrients and the effects of the East Asian aerosols on microbes in the NWPO region. Future research perspectives are also proposed.

Relationship of 137Cs with Fungal Spore Tracers in the Ambient Aerosols from Fukushima after the 2011 Nuclear Accident, East Japan

Even after 7 years of the nuclear accident that occurred in 2011 at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (F1NPP), high levels of 137Cs have been detected in ambient aerosols from some polluted areas of Fukushima. Higher levels of radionuclides were often observed in the atmosphere during and after rain events. We presume that biological processes such as fungal activity associated with higher relative humidity may be involved with a possible emission of radioactivity to the atmosphere, which was originally emitted from the F1NPP accident and was deposited over the ground, forest, soil, etc. Here, we report, for the first time, relationships of 137Cs and organic tracers of fungal spores (i.e., arabitol, mannitol and trehalose) in the aerosol samples collected from Fukushima, Japan. Although we found twice-higher concentrations of 137Cs at nighttime than at daytime, fungal spore tracers did not show a consistent trend to 137Cs, that is, organic tracers at nighttime were similar with those at daytime or were even higher in daytime. This study has not clearly demonstrated that fungal spores are the important source of high levels of 137Cs at nighttime. The current unclear relationship is probably associated with the sampling strategy (four consecutive days with a sampling on/off program for day/nighttime samples) taken in this campaign, which may have caused a complicated meteorological situation.

Carbonaceous Species of PM2.5 in Megacity Delhi, India During 2012-2016

Organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in PM_2.5 were estimated to study the seasonal and inter-annual variability of atmospheric total carbonaceous aerosols (TCA) at an urban site of megacity Delhi, India for 5 years from January, 2012 to December, 2016. The annual average (± standard deviation) concentrations of PM_2.5, OC, EC and TCA were 128 ± 81, 16.6 ± 12.2, 8.4 ± 5.8 and 34.5 ± 25.2 µg m^-3, respectively. During the study, significant seasonal variations in mass concentrations of PM_2.5, OC, EC and TCA were observed with maxima in winter and minima in monsoon seasons. Significant correlations between OC and EC, and OC/EC ratio suggested that vehicular emissions, fossil fuel combustion and biomass burning could be major sources of carbonaceous aerosols of PM_2.5 at the sampling site of Delhi, India.

Tropospheric aerosols: size-differentiated chemistry and large-scale spatial distributions

Worldwide interest in atmospheric aerosols has emerged since the late 20th century as a part of concerns for air pollution and radiative forcing of the earth's climate. The use of aircraft and balloons for sampling and the use of remote sensing have dramatically expanded knowledge about tropospheric aerosols. Our survey gives an overview of contemporary tropospheric aerosol chemistry based mainly on in situ measurements. It focuses on fine particles less than 1-2.5 microm in diameter. The physical properties of particles by region and altitude are exemplified by particle size distributions, total number and volume concentration, and optical parameters such as extinction coefficient and aerosol optical depth. Particle chemical characterization is size dependent, differentiated by ubiquitous sulfate, and carbon, partially from anthropogenic activity. Large-scale particle distributions extend to intra- and intercontinental proportions involving plumes from population centers to natural disturbances such as dust storms and vegetation fires. In the marine environment, sea salt adds an important component to aerosols. Generally, aerosol components, most of whose sources are at the earth's surface, tend to dilute and decrease in concentration with height, but often show different (layered) profiles depending on meteorological conditions. Key microscopic processes include new particle formation aloft and cloud interactions, both cloud initiation and cloud evaporation. Measurement campaigns aloft are short term, giving snapshots of inherently transient phenomena in the troposphere. Nevertheless, these data, combined with long-term data at the surface and optical depth and transmission observations, yield a unique picture of global tropospheric particle chemistry.

Urea: An important piece of Water Soluble Organic Nitrogen (WSON) over the Eastern Mediterranean

The role of atmospheric urea on the biogeochemical cycle of Water Soluble Organic Nitrogen (WSON) in the Eastern Mediterranean was assessed by collecting and analyzing wet and dry deposition samples and size segregated aerosols during a one year period (2006). In rain water volume weighted mean (VWM) concentration of urea was found equal to 5.5μM. In atmospheric particles the average concentration of urea in coarse and fine mode was 0.9±1.9nmol N m(-3) (median 0.0nmol N m(-3)) and 2.2±3.0nmol N m(-3) (median 1.1nmol N m(-3)), respectively. The percentage contribution of urea to WSON fraction was 0% and 20% in coarse and fine particles respectively. On an annual basis 0.81mmol m(-2) and 1.78mmol m(-2) of urea were deposited via wet and dry deposition, contributing to WSON by 10% and 11% respectively. Regression analysis of urea with the main ions and trace metals measured in parallel suggest that soil and anthropogenic activities significantly contribute to atmospheric urea. Comparison of dry deposition of urea using size segregated deposition velocities with urea collected on a glass bead collector suggested the existence of significant fraction of urea in the gas phase.

Determination of sugar compounds in atmospheric aerosols by liquid chromatography combined with positive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

We here report a method for the determination of sugar compounds of known presence in atmospheric aerosols using liquid chromatography (LC) combined with positive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (MS). The target analytes include C(3)-C(6) monosaccharide alcohols (glycerol, erythritol, xylitol, mannitol), C(5)-C(6) monosaccharides (xylose, glucose, and levoglucosan), a disaccharide (sucrose), and a trisaccharide (melezitose). A mobile phase consisting of 20% 10 mM aqueous ammonium acetate, 8% methanol, and 72% water was found to provide abundant [M+NH(4)](+) adduct ions when coupled with electrospray ionization. Use of a polymer-based amino analytical column resolved the target compounds from the bulk solvent and provided limited separation among the target compounds. The target analytes were quantified using their [M+NH(4)](+) ions. Sample pretreatment was greatly simplified in comparison with the more commonly used gas chromatographic methods. It involved extraction of aerosol filters in methanol, evaporation of the solvent, and reconstitution with 5 mM ammonium acetate in water prior to the LC-MS analysis. The analyte recoveries were measured at the levels of 100, 500 and 1000 microg/L to be in the range of 78-102%, 94-112%, and 92-110%, respectively. The detection limits were lower than 10 pmol/injection for the tested target compounds except for xylose. Xylose had a detection limit of 95 pmol/injection. The method was applied to analyze 30 atmospheric aerosol samples to demonstrate its feasibility. The LC-MS method made possible the detection of trisaccharides as aerosol constituents for the first time.
