Improving Aerosol Characterization Using an Optical Particle Counter Coupled with a Quartz Crystal Microbalance with an Integrated Microheater

Aerosols, as well as suspended particulate matter, impact atmospheric pollution, the climate, and human health, directly or indirectly. Particle size, chemical composition, and other aerosol characteristics are determinant factors for atmospheric pollution dynamics and more. In the last decade, low-cost devices have been widely used in instrumentation to measure aerosols. However, they present some issues, such as the problem of discriminating whether the aerosol is composed of liquid particles or solid. This issue could lead to errors in the estimation of mass concentration in monitoring environments where there is fog. In this study, we investigate the use of an optical particle counter (OPC) coupled to a quartz crystal microbalance with an integrated microheater (H-QCM) to enhance measurement performances. The H-QCM was used not only to measure the collected mass on its surface but also, by using the integrated microheater, it was able to heat the collected mass by performing heating cycles. In particular, we tested the developed system with aerosolized saline solutions of sodium chloride (NaCl), with three decreasing concentrations of salt and three electronic cigarette solutions (e-liquid), with different concentrations of propylene glycol and glycerin mixtures. The results showed that the OPC coherently counted the salt dilution effects, and the H-QCM output confirmed the presence of liquid and solid particles in the aerosols. In the case of e-liquid aerosols, the OPC counted the particles, and the HQCM output highlighted that in the aerosol, there were no solid particles but a liquid phase only. These findings contribute to the refinement of aerosol measurement methodologies by low-cost sensors, fostering a more comprehensive understanding.

Prolonged smoldering Douglas fir smoke inhalation augments respiratory resistances, stiffens the aorta, and curbs ejection fraction in hypercholesterolemic mice

While mounting evidence suggests that wildland fire smoke (WFS) inhalation may increase the burden of cardiopulmonary disease, the occupational risk of repeated exposure during wildland firefighting remains unknown. To address this concern, we evaluated the cardiopulmonary function in mice following a cumulative exposure to lab-scale WFS equivalent to a mid-length wildland firefighter (WLFF) career. Dosimetry analysis indicated that 80 exposure hours at a particulate concentration of 22 mg/m3 yield in mice the same cumulative deposited mass per unit of lung surface area as 3600 h of wildland firefighting. To satisfy this condition, male Apoe-/- mice were whole-body exposed to either air or smoldering Douglas fir smoke (DFS) for 2 h/day, 5 days/week, over 8 consecutive weeks. Particulate size in DFS fell within the respirable range for both mice and humans, with a count median diameter of 110 ± 20 nm. Expiratory breath hold in mice exposed to DFS significantly reduced their minute volume (DFS: 27 ± 4; Air: 122 ± 8 mL/min). By the end of the exposure time frame, mice in the DFS group exhibited a thicker (DFS: 109 ± 3; Air: 98 ± 3 μm) and less distensible (DFS: 23 ± 1; Air: 28 ± 1 MPa-1) aorta with reduced diastolic blood augmentation capacity (DFS: 53 ± 2; Air: 63 ± 2 kPa). Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging further revealed larger end-systolic volume (DFS: 14.6 ± 1.1; Air: 9.9 ± 0.9 μL) and reduced ejection-fraction (DFS: 64.7 ± 1.0; Air: 75.3 ± 0.9 %) in mice exposed to DFS. Consistent with increased airway epithelium thickness (DFS: 10.4 ± 0.8; Air: 7.6 ± 0.3 μm), airway Newtonian resistance was larger following DFS exposure (DFS: 0.23 ± 0.03; Air: 0.20 ± 0.03 cmH2O-s/mL). Furthermore, parenchyma mean linear intercept (DFS: 36.3 ± 0.8; Air: 33.3 ± 0.8 μm) and tissue thickness (DFS: 10.1 ± 0.5; Air: 7.4 ± 0.7 μm) were larger in DFS mice. Collectively, mice exposed to DFS manifested early signs of cardiopulmonary dysfunction aligned with self-reported events in mid-career WLFFs.

Exposure to Particulate Matter and Estimation of Volatile Organic Compounds across Wildland Firefighter Job Tasks

Wildland firefighters are exposed to smoke-containing particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) while suppressing wildfires. From 2015 to 2017, the U.S. Forest Service conducted a field study collecting breathing zone measurements of PM₄ (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤4 μm) on wildland firefighters from different crew types and while performing various fire suppression tasks on wildfires. Emission ratios of VOC (parts per billion; ppb): PM₁ (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤1 μm; mg/m³) were calculated using data from a separate field study conducted in summer 2018, the Western Wildfire Experiment for Cloud Chemistry, Aerosol Absorption, and Nitrogen (WE-CAN) Campaign. These emission ratios were used to estimate wildland firefighter exposure to acrolein, benzene, and formaldehyde. Results of this field sampling campaign reported that exposure to PM₄ and VOC varied across wildland firefighter crew type and job task. Type 1 crews had greater exposures to both PM₄ and VOCs than type 2 or type 2 initial attack crews, and wildland firefighters performing direct suppression had statistically higher exposures than those performing staging and other tasks (mean differences = 0.82 and 0.75 mg/m³; 95% confidence intervals = 0.38-1.26 and 0.41-1.08 mg/m³, respectively). Of the 81 personal exposure samples collected, 19% of measured PM₄ exposures exceeded the recommended National Wildland Fire Coordinating Group occupational exposure limit (0.7 mg/m³). Wildland fire management should continue to find strategies to reduce smoke exposures for wildland firefighters.

Refractive Indices of Biomass Burning Aerosols Obtained from African Biomass Fuels Using RDG Approximation

Biomass burning (BB) aerosols contribute to climate forcing, but much is still unknown about the extent of this forcing, owing partially to the high level of uncertainty regarding BB aerosol optical properties. A key optical parameter is the refractive index (RI), which influences the absorbing and scattering properties of aerosols. This quantity is not measured directly, but it is obtained by fitting the measured scattering cross section and extinction cross section to a theoretical model using the RI as a fitting parameter. We used the Rayleigh–Debye–Gans (RDG) approximation to retrieve the complex RI of freshly emitted BB aerosol from two fuels (eucalyptus and olive) from Africa in the spectral range of 500–580 nm. Experimental measurements were carried out using cavity ring-down spectroscopy to measure extinction over the range of wavelengths of 500–580 nm and nephelometry to measure scattering at three wavelengths of 450, 550, and 700 nm for size-selected BB aerosol particles. The fuels were combusted in a tube furnace at a temperature of 800 °C, which is representative of the flaming stage of burning. Filter samples were collected and imaged using tunneling electron microscopy to obtain information on the morphology and size of the particles, which was used in the RDG calculations. The mean radii of the monomers were 27.8 and 31.5 nm for the eucalyptus and the olive fuels, respectively. The components of the retrieved complex RI were in the range of 1.31 ≤ n ≤ 1.56 and 0.045 ≤ k ≤ 0.468. The real and complex parts of the RI increase with increasing particle mobility diameter. The real part of the RI is lower, and the imaginary part is higher than what was recommended in literature for black carbon generated by propane or field measurements from fires of mixed wood samples. Fuel dependent results from controlled laboratory experiments can be used in climate modeling efforts and to constrain field measurements from biomass burning.

Evaluation of assumptions for estimating chemical light extinction at U.S. national parks

Studies were conducted at Great Smoky Mountains National Park (NP) (GRSM), Tennessee, Mount Rainier NP (MORA), Washington, and Acadia NP (ACAD), Maine, to evaluate assumptions used to estimate aerosol light extinction from chemical composition. The revised IMPROVE equation calculates light scattering from concentrations of PM2.5 sulfates, nitrates, organic carbon mass (OM), and soil. Organics are assumed to be nonhygroscopic. Organic carbon (OC) is converted to OM with a multiplier of 1.8. Experiments were conducted to evaluate assumptions on aerosol hydration state, the OM/OC ratio, OM hygroscopicity, and mass scattering efficiencies. Sulfates were neutralized by ammonium during winter at GRSM (W, winter) and at MORA during summer but were acidic at ACAD and GRSM (S, summer) during summer. Hygroscopic growth was mostly smooth and continuous, rarely exhibiting hysteresis. Deliquescence was not observed except infrequently during winter at GRSM (W). Water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) was separated from bulk OC with solid-phase absorbents. The average OM/OC ratios were 2.0, 2.7, 2.1, and 2.2 at GRSM (S), GRSM (W), MORA, and ACAD, respectively. Hygroscopic growth factors (GF) at relative humidity (RH) 90% for aerosols generated from WSOC extracts averaged 1.19, 1.06, 1.13, and 1.16 at GRSM (S), GRSM (W), MORA, and ACAD, respectively. Thus, the assumption that OM is not hygroscopic may lead to underestimation of its contribution to light scattering.

IMPLICATIONS

Studies at IMPROVE sites conducted in U.S. national parks showed that aerosol organics comprise more PM2.5 mass and absorb more water as a function of relative humidity than is currently assumed by the IMPROVE equation for calculating chemical light extinction. Future strategies for reducing regional haze may therefore need to focus more heavily on understanding the origins and control of anthropogenic sources of organic aerosols.

Tracer diffusion in hard sphere fluids from molecular to hydrodynamic regimes

Molecular dynamics is employed to investigate tracer diffusion in hard sphere fluids. Reduced densities (rho*=rhosigma(3), sigma is the diameter of bath fluid particles) ranging from 0.02 to 0.52 and tracers ranging in diameter from 0.125sigma to 16sigma are considered. Finite-size effects are found to pose a significant problem and can lead to seriously underestimated tracer diffusion constants even in systems that are very large by simulation standards. It is shown that this can be overcome by applying a simple extrapolation formula that is linear in the reciprocal cell length L(-1), allowing us to obtain infinite-volume estimates of the diffusion constant for all tracer sizes. For higher densities, the range of tracer diameters considered spans diffusion behavior from molecular to hydrodynamic regimes. In the hydrodynamic limit our extrapolated results are clearly consistent with the theoretically expected slip boundary conditions, whereas the underestimated values obtained without extrapolation could easily be interpreted as approaching the stick limit. It is shown that simply adding the Enskog and hydrodynamic contributions gives a reasonable qualitative description of the diffusion behavior but tends to overestimate the diffusion constant. We propose another expression that fits the simulation results for all densities and tracer diameters.
