Geology and Petroleum Systems of the East China Sea Basin

The back-arc East China Sea Basin lies on extended continental crust at the leading edge of the Eurasian plate. In this study, the basins are described and subdivided according to their tectono-stratigraphic evolution. In order to distinguish between different phases of deformation in basin development, standard basin evolution patterns related to geodynamic drivers are identified as a first step. On the basis of this, standard patterns are recognized in the sedimentary sequences that characterize the area and its tectonic evolution, and linking them to the petroleum systems present is attempted. This is achieved by characterizing and grouping them into basin cycle-related petroleum system types (PSTs). Finally, the development of plays is examined within the petroleum systems in the context of their tectono-stratigraphic evolution, and groups of sub-basins with similar geological history and, therefore, potentially similar petroleum prospectivity are identified. In the East China Sea Basin, four proven and potential PSTs were recognized: (1) Late Cretaceous to Paleocene oil/gas-prone early syn-rift lacustrine–deltaic PST; (2) Eocene gas/oil prone late syn-rift marine PST; (3) Oligocene to Middle Miocene gas/oil-prone early post-rift fluvial–deltaic PST; (4) gas-prone syn-rift turbiditic PST. The geology and petroleum systems of three major sub-basins of the East China Sea Basin, the Xihu Sub-basin, the Lishui Sub-basin, and Okinawa Trough, are discussed in detail, and their petroleum systems and play development are analyzed. Finally, the sub-basins are grouped into “basin families” distinguished by their tectono-stratigraphic development, namely, Northwest to Northeast Shelf Basin (NWSB–NESB), Southwest to Southeast Shelf Basin (SWSB–SESB), and Okinawa Trough basin families, respectively.

Zircon Xenocrysts from Cenozoic Alkaline Basalts of the Ratanakiri Volcanic Province (Cambodia), Southeast Asia—Trace Element Geochemistry, O-Hf Isotopic Composition, U-Pb and (U-Th)/He Geochronology—Revelations into the Underlying Lithospheric Mantle

Zircon xenocrysts from alkali basalts in Ratanakiri Province, Cambodia represent a unique low-Hf zircon within a 12,000 km long Indo-Pacific megacryst zone. Colorless, yellow, brown, and red crystals ({100}, {101}, subordinate {211}, {1103}), with hopper growth and corrosion features range up to 20 cm in size. Zircon chemistry indicates juvenile, Zr-saturated, mantle-derived alkaline melt (Hf 0.6–0.7 wt %, Y <0.2 wt %, U + Th + REE (Rare-Earth Elements) < 600 ppm, Zr/Hf 66–92, Eu/Eu*N ~1, positive Ce/Ce*N, HREE (Heavy REE) enrichment). Incompatible element depletion with increasing Yb/SmN from core to rim at ~ constant Hf suggests single stage growth. Ti-in-zircon temperatures (~570–740 °C) are lower than predicted by crystal morphology (800–900 °C) and decrease from core to rim (ΔT = 10–50 °C). The δ18O values (4.88 to 5.01‰ VSMOW (Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water)) are relatively low for xenocrysts from the zircon Indo-Pacific zone (ZIP). The 176Hf/177Hf values (+ εHf 4.5–10.2) give TDepleted Mantle model source ages of 260–462 Ma and TCrustal ages of 391–754 Ma. The source magmas reflect variably depleted lithospheric mantle with little supracrustal input. Zircon U-Pb (0.88–1.56 Ma) and (U-Th)/He (0.86–1.02 Ma) ages are older than host basalt ages (~0.7 Ma), which suggests limited residence before transport. Zircon genesis suggests Zr-saturated, Al-undersaturated, carbonatitic-influenced, low-degree partial melting (<1%) of peridotitic mantle at ~60 km beneath the Indochina terrane.

Depth variations of P-wave azimuthal anisotropy beneath Mainland China

A high-resolution model of P-wave anisotropic tomography beneath Mainland China and surrounding regions is determined using a large number of arrival-time data recorded by the China seismic network, the International Seismological Centre (ISC) and temporary seismic arrays deployed on the Tibetan Plateau. Our results provide important new insights into the subducted Indian plate and mantle dynamics in East Asia. Our tomographic images show that the northern limit of the subducting Indian plate has reached the Jinsha River suture in eastern Tibet. A striking variation of P-wave azimuthal anisotropy is revealed in the Indian lithosphere: the fast velocity direction (FVD) is NE-SW beneath the Indian continent, whereas the FVD is arc parallel beneath the Himalaya and Tibetan Plateau, which may reflect re-orientation of minerals due to lithospheric extension, in response to the India-Eurasia collision. There are multiple anisotropic layers with variable FVDs in some parts of the Tibetan Plateau, which may be the cause of the dominant null splitting measurements in these regions. A circular pattern of FVDs is revealed around the Philippine Sea slab beneath SE China, which reflects asthenospheric strain caused by toroidal mantle flow around the edge of the subducting slab.

Ozone profiles in the Baltimore-Washington region (2006-2011): satellite comparisons and DISCOVER-AQ observations

Much progress has been made in creating satellite products for tracking the pollutants ozone and NO2 in the troposphere. Yet, in mid-latitude regions where meteorological interactions with pollutants are complex, accuracy can be difficult to achieve, largely due to persistent layering of some constituents. We characterize the layering of ozone soundings and related species measured from aircraft over two ground sites in suburban Washington, DC (Beltsville, MD, 39.05 N; 76.9 W) and Baltimore (Edgewood, MD, 39.4 N; 76.3 W) during the July 2011 DISCOVER-AQ (Deriving Information on Surface Conditions from Column and Vertically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality) experiment. First, we compare column-ozone amounts from the Beltsville and Edgewood sondes with data from overpassing satellites. Second, processes influencing ozone profile structure are analyzed using Laminar Identification and tracers: sonde water vapor, aircraft CO and NOy. Third, Beltsville ozone profiles and meteorological influences in July 2011 are compared to those from the summers of 2006-2010. Sonde-satellite offsets in total ozone during July 2011 at Edgewood and Beltsville, compared to the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), were 3 % mean absolute error, not statistically significant. The disagreement between an OMI/Microwave Limb Sounder-based tropospheric ozone column and the sonde averaged 10 % at both sites, with the sonde usually greater than the satellite. Laminar Identification (LID), that distinguishes ozone segments influenced by convective and advective transport, reveals that on days when both stations launched ozonesondes, vertical mixing was stronger at Edgewood. Approximately half the lower free troposphere sonde profiles have very dry laminae, with coincident aircraft spirals displaying low CO (80-110 ppbv), suggesting stratospheric influence. Ozone budgets at Beltsville in July 2011, determined with LID, as well as standard meteorological indicators, resemble those of 4 of the previous 5 summers. The penetration of stratospheric air throughout the troposphere appears to be typical for summer conditions in the Baltimore-Washington region.
