Receiver Function Imaging of the Crustal Structure Beneath Northern Taiwan Using Dense Linear Arrays

In order to realize the crustal structure in Taiwan, the receiver function method was used to analyze the teleseismic waveforms recorded by two orthogonal broadband linear arrays deployed in northern Taiwan in the east–west and south–north directions by the TAiwan Integrated GEodynamics Research (TAIGER) project from 2007 to 2009. By incorporation with Common Conversion Point (CCP) stacking, the Moho discontinuities beneath northern Taiwan were imaged. Based on the CCP stack of receiver functions in the east–west direction array, a collision boundary between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate appears at the east of Taiwan. The Moho depth of the Eurasian Plate in west Taiwan is flat and 30 km; the Moho depth of the Philippine Sea Plate below the Central Mountain Range is about 55 km; in the east, the Moho depth of the Ryukyu arc is about 40 km. The south–north profile shows a brittle–ductile transition zone at depths of 15–20 km beneath central Taiwan from south to north. Moreover, the Moho depth of the Eurasian Plate is about 20–25 km in northern Taiwan. The Moho depth appears to deepen from north to south. The deepest Moho is located at the junction of the two profile lines, the Philippine Sea Plate, and has a depth of 60 km. According to these Moho depths, the crustal structure is thin and flat in the west part of northern Taiwan which is similar to the thin-skin model. However, the lithosphere is deformed and forms the mountain root in the east part which is similar to the lithospheric collision model.

3-D thermal regime and dehydration processes around the regions of slow earthquakes along the Ryukyu Trench

Several interplate seismic events, such as short-term slow slip events (S-SSEs) and low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs), have been identified in the Ryukyu Trench, southwestern Japan. As one of the specific characteristics of this seismicity, the depths at which S-SSEs occur at the plate interface beneath Okinawa Island are approximately 5–10 km shallower than those beneath the Yaeyama Islands. To elucidate the cause of this difference in depth, we constructed a three-dimensional, Cartesian thermomechanical subduction model and applied the subduction history of the Philippine Sea (PHS) plate in the model region. As a result, the interplate temperatures at which S-SSEs take place were estimated to range from 350 to 450 °C beneath Okinawa Island and from 500 to 600 °C beneath the Yaeyama Islands. The former temperature range is consistent with previous thermal modelling studies for the occurrence of slow earthquakes, but the latter temperature range is by approximately 150 °C higher than the former. Therefore, explaining how the depth difference in S-SSEs could be caused from the aspect of only the thermal regime is difficult. Using phase diagrams for hydrous minerals in the oceanic crust and mantle wedge, we also estimated the water content distribution on and above the plate interface of the PHS plate. Near the S-SSE fault planes, almost the same amount of dehydration associated with phase transformations of hydrous minerals from blueschist to amphibolite and from amphibolite to amphibole eclogite within the oceanic crust were inferred along Okinawa Island and the Yaeyama Islands, respectively. On the other hand, the phase transformations within the mantle wedge were inferred only beneath the Yaeyama Islands, whereas no specific phase transformation was inferred beneath Okinawa Island around the S-SSE occurrence region. Therefore, we conclude that dehydrated fluid derived from the oceanic crust at the plate interface would play a key role in the occurrence of S-SSEs.

Unveiling Tatun volcanic plumbing structure induced by post-collisional extension of Taiwan mountain belt

The Tatun Volcanic Group (TVG) is proximal to the metropolis of Taipei City (population of ca. 7 million) and has long been a major concern due to the potential risks from volcanic activity to the population and critical infrastructure. While the TVG has been previously considered a dormant or extinct volcano, recent evidence suggests a much younger age of the last eruption event (~ 6000 years) and possible existence of a magma reservoir beneath the TVG. However, the location, dimension, and detailed geometry of the magma reservoir and plumbing system remains largely unknown. To examine the TVG volcanic plumbing structure in detail, the local P-wave travel time data and the teleseismic waveform data from a new island-wide Formosa Array Project are combined for a 3D tomographic joint inversion. The new model reveals a magma reservoir with a notable P-wave velocity reduction of 19% (ca. ~ 19% melt fraction) at 8-20 km beneath eastern TVG and with possible northward extension to a shallower depth near where active submarine volcanoes that have been detected. Enhanced tomographic images also reveal sporadic magmatic intrusion/underplating in the lower crust of Husehshan Range and northern Taiwan. These findings suggest an active volcanic plumbing system induced by post-collisional extension associated with the collapse of the orogen.

GEOPHYSICS. Layered deformation in the Taiwan orogen

The underthrusting of continental crust during mountain building is an issue of debate for orogens at convergent continental margins. We report three-dimensional seismic anisotropic tomography of Taiwan that shows a nearly 90° rotation of anisotropic fabrics across a 10- to 20-kilometer depth, consistent with the presence of two layers of deformation. The upper crust is dominated by collision-related compressional deformation, whereas the lower crust of Taiwan, mostly the crust of the subducted Eurasian plate, is dominated by convergence-parallel shear deformation. We interpret this lower crustal shearing as driven by the continuous sinking of the Eurasian mantle lithosphere when the surface of the subducted plate is coupled with the orogen. The two-layer deformation clearly defines the role of subduction in the formation of the Taiwan mountain belt.
