A Ka-Band Wind Geophysical Model Function Using Doppler Scatterometer Measurements from the Air-Sea Interaction Tower Experiment

Physical understanding and modeling of Ka-band ocean surface backscatter is challenging due to a lack of measurements. In the framework of the NASA Earth Ventures Suborbital-3 Submesoscale Ocean Dynamics Experiment (S-MODE) mission, a Ka-Band Ocean continuous wave Doppler Scatterometer (KaBODS) built by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (UMass) was installed on the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Air-Sea Interaction Tower. Together with ASIT anemometers, a new data set of Ka-band ocean surface backscatter measurements along with surface wind/wave and weather parameters was collected. In this work, we present the KaBODS instrument and an empirical Ka-band wind Geophysical Model Function (GMF), the so-called ASIT GMF, based on the KaBODS data collected over a period of three months, from October 2019 to January 2020, for incidence angles ranging between 40° and 68°. The ASIT GMF results are compared with an existing Ka-band wind GMF developed from data collected during a tower experiment conducted over the Black Sea. The two GMFs show differences in terms of wind speed and wind direction sensitivity. However, they are consistent in the values of the standard deviation of the model residuals. This suggests an intrinsic geophysical variability characterizing the Ka-band surface backscatter. The observed variability does not significantly change when filtering out swell-dominated data, indicating that the long-wave induced backscatter modulation is not the primary source of the KaBODS backscatter variability. We observe evidence of wave breaking events, which increase the skewness of the backscatter distribution in linear space, consistent with previous studies. Interestingly, a better agreement is seen between the GMFs and the actual data at an incidence angle of 60° for both GMFs, and the statistical analysis of the model residuals shows a reduced backscatter variability at this incidence angle. This study shows that the ASIT data set is a valuable reference for studies of Ka-band backscatter. Further investigations are on-going to fully characterize the observed variability and its implication in the wind GMF development.

Physics-Based Forward Modeling of Ocean Surface Swell Effects on SMAP L1-C NRCS Observations

This paper examines the impact of ocean surface swell waves on near-coastal L-band high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data collected using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP) radar at 40° incidence angle. The two-scale model and a more efficient off-nadir approximation of the second-order small-slope-approximation are used for co- and cross-polarized backscatter normalized radar cross-section (NRCS) predictions of the ocean surface, respectively. Backscatter NRCS predictions are modeled using a combined wind and swell model where wind-driven surface roughness is characterized using the Durden-Vesecky directional spectrum, while swell effects are represented through their contribution to the long wave slope variance (mean-square slopes, or MSS). The swell-only MSS is numerically computed based on a model defined using the JONSWAP spectrum with parameters calculated using the National Data Buoy Center and Wave Watch III data. The backscatter NRCS model is further refined to include fetch-limited and low-wind corrections. The results show an improved agreement between modeled and observed HH-polarized backscatter NRCS when swell effects are included and indicate a relatively larger swell impact on L-band compared to higher radar frequencies. Preliminary investigations into the potential swell retrieval capabilities in the form of excess MSS are encouraging, however further refinements are required to make broadly applicable conclusions.

Estimating Energy Dissipation Rate from Breaking Waves Using Polarimetric SAR Images

The total energy dissipation rate on the ocean surface, ϵt (W m−2), provides a first-order estimation of the kinetic energy input rate at the ocean–atmosphere interface. Studies on the spatial and temporal distribution of the energy dissipation rate are important for the improvement of climate and wave models. Traditional oceanographic research normally uses remote measurements (airborne and platforms sensors) and in situ data acquisition to estimate ϵt; however, those methods cover small areas over time and are difficult to reproduce especially in the open oceans. Satellite remote sensing has proven the potential to estimate some parameters related to breaking waves on a synoptic scale, including the energy dissipation rate. In this paper, we use polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to estimate ϵt under different wind and sea conditions. The used methodology consisted of decomposing the backscatter SAR return in terms of two contributions: a polarized contribution, associated with the fast response of the local wind (Bragg backscattering), and a non-polarized (NP) contribution, associated with wave breaking (Non-Bragg backscattering). Wind and wave parameters were estimated from the NP contribution and used to calculate ϵt from a parametric model dependent of these parameters. The results were analyzed using wave model outputs (WAVEWATCH III) and previous measurements documented in the literature. For the prevailing wind seas conditions, the ϵt estimated from pol-SAR data showed good agreement with dissipation associated with breaking waves when compared to numerical simulations. Under prevailing swell conditions, the total energy dissipation rate was higher than expected. The methodology adopted proved to be satisfactory to estimate the total energy dissipation rate for light to moderate wind conditions (winds below 10 m s−1), an environmental condition for which the current SAR polarimetric methods do not estimate ϵt properly.

Analysis of Ku- and Ka-Band Sea Surface Backscattering Characteristics at Low-Incidence Angles Based on the GPM Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar Measurements

The co-located normalized radar backscatter cross section measurements from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Ku/Ka-band dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) and sea surface wind; wave and temperature observations from the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) moored buoys are used to analyze the dependence and sensitivity of Ku- and Ka-band backscatter on surface conditions at low-incidence angles. Then the potential for inverting wind and wave parameters directly from low-incidence σ0 measurements is discussed. The results show that the KaPR σ0 is more sensitive to surface conditions than the KuPR σ0 overall. Nevertheless; both the KuPR σ0 and KaPR σ0 are strongly correlated with wind speed (U10) and average wave steepness (δa) with the exception of specific transitional incidence angles. Moreover, U10 and δa could be retrieved from pointwise σ0 near nadir and near 18°. Near 18°; wind direction information is needed as the effect of wind direction on σ0 becomes increasingly significant with incidence angle. To improve the performance of U10 retrieval; especially for low U10; auxiliary δa information would be most helpful; and sea surface temperature is better taken into account. Other wave parameters; such as significant wave height; wave period and wave age; are partly correlated with σ0. It is generally more difficult to retrieve those parameters directly from pointwise σ0. For the retrieval of those wave parameters; various auxiliary information is needed. Wind direction and wave direction cannot be retrieved from pointwise σ0.

Surface gravity waves and their acoustic signatures, 1-30 Hz, on the mid-Pacific sea floor

In 1999, Duennebier et al. deployed a hydrophone and geophone below the conjugate depth in the abyssal Pacific, midway between Hawaii and California. Real time data were transmitted for 3 yr over an abandoned ATT cable. These data have been analyzed in the frequency band 1 to 30 Hz. Between 1 and 6 Hz, the bottom data are interpreted as acoustic radiation from surface gravity waves, an extension to higher frequencies of a non-linear mechanism proposed by Longuet-Higgins in 1950 to explain microseisms. The inferred surface wave spectrum for wave lengths between 6 m and 17 cm is saturated (wind-independent) and roughly consistent with the traditional Phillips κ(-4) wave number spectrum. Shorter ocean waves have a strong wind dependence and a less steep wave number dependence. Similar features are found in the bottom record between 6 and 30 Hz. But this leads to an enigma: The derived surface spectrum inferred from the Longuet-Higgins mechanism with conventional assumptions for the dispersion relation is associated with mean square slopes that greatly exceed those derived from glitter. Regardless of the generation mechanism, the measured bottom intensities between 10 and 30 Hz are well below minimum noise standards reported in the literature.
