Impacts of Heterogeneous Chemistry on Vertical Profiles of Martian Ozone

We show a positive vertical correlation between ozone and water ice using a vertical cross-correlation analysis with observations from the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter's Nadir and Occultation for Mars Discovery instrument. This is particularly apparent during L _S = 0°-180°, Mars Year 35 at high southern latitudes, when the water vapor abundance is low. Ozone and water vapor are anti-correlated on Mars; Clancy et al. (2016, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.icarus.2015.11.016) also discuss the anti-correlation between ozone and water ice. However, our simulations with gas-phase-only chemistry using a 1-D model show that ozone concentration is not influenced by water ice. Heterogeneous chemistry has been proposed as a mechanism to explain the underprediction of ozone in global climate models (GCMs) through the removal of HO _x . We find improving the heterogeneous chemical scheme by creating a separate tracer for the HO _x adsorbed state, causes ozone abundance to increase when water ice is present (30-50 km), better matching observed trends. When water vapor abundance is high, there is no consistent vertical correlation between observed ozone and water ice and, in simulated scenarios, the heterogeneous chemistry has a minor influence on ozone. HO _x , which are by-products of water vapor, dominate ozone abundance, masking the effects of heterogeneous chemistry on ozone, and making adsorption of HO _x have a negligible impact on ozone. This is consistent with gas-phase-only modeled ozone, showing good agreement with observations when water vapor is abundant. Overall, the inclusion of heterogeneous chemistry improves the ozone vertical structure in regions of low water vapor abundance, which may partially explain GCM ozone deficits.

Diurnal Variations of Water Ice in the Martian Atmosphere Observed by Mars Climate Sounder

Simulation studies have proposed a significant thermal effect of water ice clouds on the Martian atmosphere and climate. However, previous studies focused more on seasonal variations but less on short-term changes. In this work, we used the MCS multi-local time data to investigate the water ice diurnal variations on Mars. We quantified its diurnal variations with amplitude and phase by applying the tidal fitting method to the water ice abundance. In addition, we found a close correlation (antiphase relation) between the thermal tide and water ice diurnal variations during the aphelion seasons that was not sensitive to both the background water ice and dust opacity but increased with the tidal amplitude. In the perihelion seasons, the antiphase relation was sensitive to the water ice and dust opacity, both affected by the dust storm activity. Finally, the statistic results suggested an unexpected low threshold of diurnal tide amplitude (2 to 3 K) for generating a relevant water ice diurnal variation, accounting for the ubiquitous water ice diurnal variations in the Martian atmosphere. These new observational results can help further understand the phase transition process between ice and vapor in the Martian atmosphere and better constrain the Martian global climate model in the future.

Vertical Aerosol Distribution and Mesospheric Clouds From ExoMars UVIS

The vertical opacity structure of the martian atmosphere is important for understanding the distribution of ice (water and carbon dioxide) and dust. We present a new data set of extinction opacity profiles from the NOMAD/UVIS spectrometer aboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, covering one and a half Mars Years (MY) including the MY 34 Global Dust Storm and several regional dust storms. We discuss specific mesospheric cloud features and compare with existing literature and a Mars Global Climate Model (MGCM) run with data assimilation. Mesospheric opacity features, interpreted to be water ice, were present during the global and regional dust events and correlate with an elevated hygropause in the MGCM, providing evidence that regional dust storms can boost transport of vapor to mesospheric altitudes (with potential implications for atmospheric escape). The season of the dust storms also had an apparent impact on the resulting lifetime of the cloud features, with events earlier in the dusty season correlating with longer-lasting mesospheric cloud layers. Mesospheric opacity features were also present during the dusty season even in the absence of regional dust storms, and interpreted to be water ice based on previous literature. The assimilated MGCM temperature structure agreed well with the UVIS opacities, but the MGCM opacity field struggled to reproduce mesospheric ice features, suggesting a need for further development of water ice parameterizations. The UVIS opacity data set offers opportunities for further research into the vertical aerosol structure of the martian atmosphere, and for validation of how this is represented in numerical models.

Local time variation of water ice clouds on Mars as observed by THEMIS

The move of the Odyssey spacecraft during Mars Years 31 and 32 to an orbit with local time near 7:00 AM and PM has enabled the systematic retrieval of water ice cloud optical depth using THEMIS thermal infrared images at a time of day not accessible from Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, or previous Odyssey observations. Because water ice clouds form by condensation, relatively small changes in atmospheric temperature can cause clouds to form or sublimate quickly, and there can be large changes in water ice cloud optical depth over the course of a day. Retrievals of water ice cloud optical depth using THEMIS observations show significant differences in cloud locations and optical depth as a function of local time and season. Cloud optical depth generally increases from the earliest (14:30) to latest (19:30) observations. During the aphelion season the increase from afternoon to evening is primarily associated with the thickening of existing clouds, while during the equinoctial and perihelion seasons there is a proportionally greater increase associated with the formation of clouds in the evening at locations where clouds were not present during the afternoon.

The Ensemble Mars Atmosphere Reanalysis System (EMARS) Version 1.0

The Ensemble Mars Atmosphere Reanalysis System (EMARS) dataset version 1.0 contains hourly gridded atmospheric variables for the planet Mars, spanning Mars Year (MY) 24 through 33 (1999 through 2017). A reanalysis represents the best estimate of the state of the atmosphere by combining observations that are sparse in space and time with a dynamical model and weighting them by their uncertainties. EMARS uses the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (LETKF) for data assimilation with the GFDL/NASA Mars Global Climate Model (MGCM). Observations that are assimilated include the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) and Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) temperature retrievals. The dataset includes gridded fields of temperature, wind, surface pressure, as well as dust, water ice, CO2 surface ice and other atmospheric quantities. Reanalyses are useful for both science and engineering studies, including investigations of transient eddies, the polar vortex, thermal tides and dust storms, and during spacecraft operations.

The physics of Martian weather and climate: a review

The planet Mars hosts an atmosphere that is perhaps the closest in terms of its meteorology and climate to that of the Earth. But Mars differs from Earth in its greater distance from the Sun, its smaller size, its lack of liquid oceans and its thinner atmosphere, composed mainly of CO(2). These factors give Mars a rather different climate to that of the Earth. In this article we review various aspects of the martian climate system from a physicist's viewpoint, focusing on the processes that control the martian environment and comparing these with corresponding processes on Earth. These include the radiative and thermodynamical processes that determine the surface temperature and vertical structure of the atmosphere, the fluid dynamics of its atmospheric motions, and the key cycles of mineral dust and volatile transport. In many ways, the climate of Mars is as complicated and diverse as that of the Earth, with complex nonlinear feedbacks that affect its response to variations in external forcing. Recent work has shown that the martian climate is anything but static, but is almost certainly in a continual state of transient response to slowly varying insolation associated with cyclic variations in its orbit and rotation. We conclude with a discussion of the physical processes underlying these long- term climate variations on Mars, and an overview of some of the most intriguing outstanding problems that should be a focus for future observational and theoretical studies.
