Comparison of the Spatial and Temporal Variability of Cloud Amounts over China Derived from Different Satellite Datasets

Various cloud cover products have been developed over the past few decades, but their uncertainties have not been sufficiently assessed, especially at a regional scale, which is vital for the application of satellite products to climate studies. In this study, we compare the spatial–temporal variability of the cloud amount over China from the 11 datasets provided by the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) cloud assessment project at a horizontal resolution of 1° × 1° from the 1980s to 2000s, using the site data as a reference. The differences among these datasets are quantified in terms of the standard deviations and the correlation coefficients between different datasets. Most of the datasets show a similar spatial distribution of total cloud amounts (TCAs), but their magnitudes differ. The standard deviations of the annual, winter, and summer mean TCA are approximately 9–18% for the regional mean TCAs over the four typical regions of China, including the northwestern region (NW), northeastern region (NE), Tibetan Plateau region (TP), and southern China region (SC), with the largest standard deviations of 13–18% in the TP. By analyzing the factors that influence the satellite inversion data, such as the observation instrument, inversion algorithm, and observation time, we found that the difference caused by the observation instrument or algorithm is greater than the effect of the observation time, and the satellite cloud datasets with better recognition capability for cloud types show lower uncertainties when compared with the station observation. In terms of seasonal cycle, except HIRS and MODIS-ST, most satellite datasets can reproduce the observed seasonal cycle with the largest TCA in summer and the smallest TCA in autumn and winter. For the interannual variation, ISCCP-D1, MODIS-CE, and MODIS-ST are most consistent with the site data for the annual mean TCA, and two of the remaining datasets (PATMOSX and TOVSB) show more consistent temporal variations with the site observation in summer than in winter, especially over NW and NE regions. In general, MODIS-CE shows the best performance in reproducing the spatial pattern and interannual variation of TCA amongst the 11 satellite datasets, and PATMOSX, MODIS-ST, CALIPSO-GOCCP, and CALIPSO-ST also show relatively good performance.

Unrealistically pristine air in the Arctic produced by current global scale models

Black carbon aerosol (BCA) in the Arctic has profound impacts on the global climate system through radiation processes. Despite its enormous impacts, current global scale models, powerful tools for estimating overall impact, tend to underestimate the levels of BCA in the Arctic over several seasons. Using a global aerosol transport simulation with a horizontal grid resolution of 3.5 km, we determined that a higher resolution significantly reduced the underestimation of BCA levels in the Arctic, mainly due to an enhancement of the representation of low-pressure and frontal systems. The BCA mass loading in the Arctic simulated with 3.5-km grid resolution was 4.2-times larger than that simulated with coarse (56-km) grid resolution. Our results also indicated that grid convergence had not occurred on both the contrast between the cloud/cloud free areas and the poleward BCA mass flux, despite the use of the 3.5-km grid resolution. These results suggest that a global aerosol transport simulation using kilometre-order or finer grid resolution is required for more accurate estimation of the distribution of pollutants in the Arctic.

"On the Land-Ocean Contrast of Tropical Convection and Microphysics Statistics Derived from TRMM Satellite Signals and Global Storm-Resolving Models"

A 14-year climatology of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) collocated multi-sensor signal statistics reveal a distinct land-ocean contrast as well as geographical variability of precipitation type, intensity, and microphysics. Microphysics information inferred from the TRMM precipitation radar and Microwave Imager (TMI) show a large land-ocean contrast for the deep category, suggesting continental convective vigor. Over land, TRMM shows higher echo-top heights and larger maximum echoes, suggesting taller storms and more intense precipitation, as well as larger microwave scattering, suggesting the presence of more/larger frozen convective hydrometeors. This strong land-ocean contrast in deep convection is invariant over seasonal and multi-year time-scales. Consequently, relatively short-term simulations from two global storm-resolving models can be evaluated in terms of their land-ocean statistics using the TRMM Triple-sensor Three-step Evaluation via a satellite simulator. The models evaluated are the NASA Multi-scale Modeling Framework (MMF) and the Non-hydrostatic Icosahedral Cloud Atmospheric Model (NICAM). While both simulations can represent convective land-ocean contrasts in warm precipitation to some extent, near-surface conditions over land are relatively moisture in NICAM than MMF, which appears to be the key driver in the divergent warm precipitation results between the two models. Both the MMF and NICAM produced similar frequencies of large CAPE between land and ocean. The dry MMF boundary layer enhanced microwave scattering signals over land, but only NICAM had an enhanced deep convection frequency over land. Neither model could reproduce a realistic land-ocean contrast in in deep convective precipitation microphysics. A realistic contrast between land and ocean remains an issue in global storm-resolving modeling.
