Geochronology of an Apollo 16 Clast Provides Evidence for a Basin-Forming Impact 4.3 Billion Years Ago

High-precision U-Pb zircon dating identifies a major magmatic event on the Moon at 4.338 Ga

The Moon has had a complex history, with evidence of its primary crust formation obscured by later impacts. Existing U-Pb dates of >500 zircons from several locations on the lunar nearside reveal a pronounced age peak at 4.33 billion years (Ga), suggesting a major, potentially global magmatic event. However, the precision of existing geochronology is insufficient to determine whether this peak represents a brief event or a more protracted period of magmatism occurring over tens of millions of years. To improve the temporal resolution, we have analyzed Apollo 14, 15, and 17 zircons that were previously dated by ion microprobe at ~4.33 Ga using isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry. Concordant dates with sub-million-year uncertainty span ~4 million years from 4.338 to 4.334 Ga. Combined with Hf isotopic ratios and trace element concentrations, the data suggest zircon formation in a large impact melt sheet, possibly linked to the South Pole-Aitken basin.

Half-life and initial Solar System abundance of 146Sm determined from the oldest andesitic meteorite

¹⁴⁶Sm-¹⁴²Nd radioactive systematics can provide constraints on the timing of early differentiation processes on Earth, Moon, and Mars. The uncertainties related to the initial abundance and half-life of the extinct isotope ¹⁴⁶Sm impede the interpretation of the ¹⁴⁶Sm-¹⁴²Nd systematics of planetary materials. The accurate determinations of Sm, Nd, and Mg isotopic compositions of the oldest “andesitic” achondrite Erg Chech 002 (EC 002) define a crystallization age of 1.8 Myr after the formation of the Solar System and provide the most accurate and reliable initial ratio of ¹⁴⁶Sm/¹⁴⁴Sm for the Solar System at 0.00840 ± 0.00032 using a ¹⁴⁶Sm half-life of 103 Ma, making EC 002 an anchor for ¹⁴⁶Sm-¹⁴²Nd systematics for Earth and planetary materials.

The formation and differentiation of planetary bodies are dated using radioactive decay systems, including the short-lived ¹⁴⁶Sm-¹⁴²Nd (T_½ = 103 or 68 Ma) and long-lived ¹⁴⁷Sm-¹⁴³Nd (T_½ = 106 Ga) radiogenic pairs that provide relative and absolute ages, respectively. However, the initial abundance and half-life of the extinct radioactive isotope ¹⁴⁶Sm are still debated, weakening the interpretation of ¹⁴⁶Sm-¹⁴²Nd systematics obtained for early planetary processes. Here, we apply the short-lived ²⁶Al-²⁶Mg, ¹⁴⁶Sm-¹⁴²Nd, and long-lived ¹⁴⁷Sm-¹⁴³Sm chronometers to the oldest known andesitic meteorite, Erg Chech 002 (EC 002), to constrain the Solar System initial abundance of ¹⁴⁶Sm. The ²⁶Al-²⁶Mg mineral isochron of EC 002 provides a tightly constrained initial δ²⁶Mg* of −0.009 ± 0.005 ‰ and (²⁶Al/²⁷Al)₀ of (8.89 ± 0.09) × 10⁻⁶. This initial abundance of ²⁶Al is the highest measured so far in an achondrite and corresponds to a crystallization age of 1.80 ± 0.01 Myr after Solar System formation. The ¹⁴⁶Sm-¹⁴²Nd mineral isochron returns an initial ¹⁴⁶Sm/¹⁴⁴Sm ratio of 0.00830 ± 0.00032. By combining the Al-Mg crystallization age and initial ¹⁴⁶Sm/¹⁴⁴Sm ratio of EC 002 with values for refractory inclusions, achondrites, and lunar samples, the best-fit half-life for ¹⁴⁶Sm is 102 ± 9 Ma, corresponding to the physically measured value of 103 ± 5 Myr, rather than the latest and lower revised value of 68 ± 7 Ma. Using a half-life of 103 Ma for ¹⁴⁶Sm, the ¹⁴⁶Sm/¹⁴⁴Sm abundance of EC 002 translates into an initial Solar System ¹⁴⁶Sm/¹⁴⁴Sm ratio of 0.00840 ± 0.00032, which represents the most reliable and precise estimate to date and makes EC 002 an ideal anchor for the ¹⁴⁶Sm-¹⁴²Nd clock.

The origin of volatile elements in the Earth-Moon system

The origin of volatile species such as water in the Earth-Moon system is a subject of intense debate but is obfuscated by the potential for volatile loss during the Giant Impact that resulted in the formation of these bodies. One way to address these topics and place constraints on the temporal evolution of volatile components in planetary bodies is by using the observed decay of ⁸⁷Rb to ⁸⁷Sr because Rb is a moderately volatile element, whereas Sr is much more refractory. Here, we show that lunar highland rocks that crystallized ∼4.35 billion years ago exhibit very limited ingrowth of ⁸⁷Sr, indicating that prior to the Moon-forming impact, the impactor commonly referred to as "Theia" and the proto-Earth both must have already been strongly depleted in volatile elements relative to primitive meteorites. These results imply that 1) the volatile element depletion of the Moon did not arise from the Giant Impact, 2) volatile element distributions on the Moon and Earth were principally inherited from their precursors, 3) both Theia and the proto-Earth probably formed in the inner solar system, and 4) the Giant Impact occurred relatively late in solar system history.

Formation of the Lunar Primary Crust From a Long-Lived Slushy Magma Ocean

Classical fractional crystallization scenarios of early lunar evolution suggest crustal formation by the flotation of light anorthite minerals from a liquid magma ocean. However, this model is challenged by the> 200 Myr age range of primitive ferroan anorthosites, their concordance with Mg-suite magmatism and by the compositional diversity observed in lunar anorthosites. Here, we propose a new model of slushy magma ocean crystallization in which crystals remain suspended in the lunar interior and crust formation only begins once a critical crystal content is reached. Thereafter crustal formation occurs by buoyant melt extraction and magmatism. The mixture viscosity strongly depends on temperature and solid fraction driving the development of a surface stagnant lid where enhanced solidification and buoyant ascent of melt lead to an anorthite-enriched crust. This model explains lunar anorthosites heterogeneity and suggests a crustal formation timescale of 100s Ma, reconciling anorthosite ages with an early age of the Moon.

The Cl isotope composition and halogen contents of Apollo-return samples

Lunar mare basalts are depleted in F and Cl by approximately an order of magnitude relative to mid-ocean ridge basalts and contain two Cl-bearing components with elevated isotopic compositions relative to the bulk-Earth value of ∼0‰. The first is a water-soluble chloride constituting 65 ± 10% of total Cl with δ³⁷Cl values averaging 3.0 ± 4.3‰. The second is structurally bound chloride with δ³⁷Cl values averaging 7.3 ± 3.5‰. These high and distinctly different isotopic values are inconsistent with equilibrium fractionation processes and instead suggest early and extensive degassing of an isotopically light vapor. No relationship is observed between F/Cl ratios and δ³⁷Cl values, which suggests that lunar halogen depletion largely resulted from the Moon-forming Giant Impact. The δ³⁷Cl values of apatite are generally higher than the structurally bound Cl, and ubiquitously higher than the calculated bulk δ³⁷Cl values of 4.1 ± 4.0‰. The apatite grains are not representative of the bulk rock, and instead record localized degassing during the final stages of lunar magma ocean (LMO) or later melt crystallization. The large variability in the δ³⁷Cl values of apatite within individual thin sections further supports this conclusion. While urKREEP (primeval KREEP [potassium/rare-earth elements/phosphorus]) has been proposed to be the source of the Moon's high Cl isotope values, the ferroan anorthosites (FANs) have the highest δ³⁷Cl values and have a positive correlation with Cl content, and yet do not contain apatite, nor evidence of a KREEP component. The high δ³⁷Cl values in this lithology are explained by the incorporation of a >30‰ HCl vapor from a highly evolved LMO.
