A Review of Health Issues Related to Child Labor and Violence Within Artisanal and Small‐Scale Mining

A qualitative study on the challenges of Afghan child labourers in Tehran

Afghan refugees child labourers face many challenges as they are labelled as refugees. In an attempt to explore these challenges, the present study was conducted in Tehran with a qualitative approach. The present qualitative research was conducted using a conventional content analysis approach with 25 Afghan child labourers in 2022 in Tehran. Child labourers were selected through purposive and snowball sampling and interviewed in a semi-in-depth interview. The data were analysed based on Granheim and Lundman's criteria, as well as those of Guba and Lincoln, to further enrich the findings. A total of 3 categories, 13 sub-categories, and 183 initial codes were extracted from the data analysis, including: "psychological challenges" (history of harassment and abuse, negative effects, high-risk behaviours, and family detachment); "health challenges" (physical problems, inappropriate accommodation, medical/therapeutic problems, and health threats); and "social challenges" (neglected childhood, dual identity, educational limitations, inadequate social support, social isolation, and social humiliation). At the individual level, it is possible to meet the child labourers' health needs and make them aware of the hazards of working in the streets through physical examination at certain intervals and holding training workshops on harassment prevention, anger control, prevention of high-risk behaviours, prevention of infectious diseases such as hepatitis, and strengthening self-confidence to improve health. Also, the Afghan child labourers' work could be intervened at the social and familial level by providing accommodation in more suitable neighbourhoods, providing health insurance for child labourers, creating the chances of studying in schools, preventing dropouts, and strengthening social relations in order to improve children's health.

UK health researchers' considerations of the environmental impacts of their data-intensive practices and its relevance to health inequities

BACKGROUND

The health sector aims to improve health outcomes and access to healthcare. At the same time, the sector relies on unsustainable environmental practices that are increasingly recognised to be catastrophic threats to human health and health inequities. As such, a moral imperative exists for the sector to address these practices. While strides are currently underway to mitigate the environmental impacts of healthcare, less is known about how health researchers are addressing these issues, if at all.

METHODS

This paper uses an interview methodology to explore the attitudes of UK health researchers using data-intensive methodologies about the adverse environmental impacts of their practices, and how they view the importance of these considerations within wider health goals.

RESULTS

Interviews with 26 researchers showed that participants wanted to address the environmental and related health harms associated with their research and they reflected on how they could do so in alignment with their own research goals. However, when tensions emerged, their own research was prioritised. This was related to their own desires as researchers and driven by the broader socio-political context of their research endeavours.

CONCLUSION

To help mitigate the environmental and health harms associated with data-intensive health research, the socio-political context of research culture must be addressed.

Women who live in mining on the French-Brazilian border: daily challenges

OBJECTIVES

to describe the daily life of Brazilian women who work in mining.

METHODS

a descriptive, qualitative study, with analysis based on the theory of Symbolic Interactionism. Non-participant observations, field diary writing, sociodemographic form, non-directive interviews, recorded and transcribed in full, were carried out with 19 women who work in mining areas on the French-Brazilian Amazon border.

RESULTS

two categories emerged: Life trajectories: women's work in mining; Woman, mother and prospector: the multiple facets of gender inequality on the Amazon border.

FINAL CONSIDERATIONS

assessing the daily experiences of women in the Amazonian mines allowed identifying their health needs, evidencing the need to direct and implement public and social policies and health practices for comprehensive care of these women's health.
