Abstract
The Maipo River catchment is one of Chile's most polluted basins. In recent decades, discharges of untreated sewage and organic matter have caused eutrophication and water quality degradation. We employed the indigenous silverfish species Basilichthys microlepidotus as a model organism to investigate the process of adaptation and selection on genes influenced by pollution. Using variation at single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), we determined the temporal stability of the population structure patterns previously identified in this species by varying SNPs. We also examined local adaptation to pollution-selected genes. Using the genotypes of 7684 loci in 180 individuals, we identified 429 and 700 loci that may be undergoing selection. We detected these loci using the FSTHET and ARLEQUIN outlier detection software, respectively. Both software packages simultaneously identified a total of 250 loci. B. microlepidotus' population structure did not change over time at contaminated or unpolluted sites. In addition, our analysis found: (i) selection of genes associated with pollution, consistent with observations in other organisms; (ii) identification of candidate genes that are functionally linked to the same biological processes, molecular functions and/or cellular components that previously showed differential expression in the same populations; and (iii) a candidate gene with differential expression and a non-synonymous substitution.

Abstract
Adenovirus, a common respiratory pathogen, has witnessed a notable rise in incidence rates across various regions in Pakistan. Utilizing epidemiological data and climate records, this research discerns a potential linkage between the burgeoning adenovirus cases and alterations in regional climate patterns. Through statistical analysis and modeling techniques, the study aims to elucidate the relationship between climatic variables, such as temperature, humidity, and precipitation, and the prevalence of adenovirus infections. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for developing effective public health interventions and preparedness strategies to mitigate the impact of adenovirus outbreaks in Pakistan. Furthermore, this research contributes to the broader discourse on the intersection of infectious diseases and climate change, highlighting the need for comprehensive adaptive measures to address emerging health challenges in a changing environment.

Abstract
This study assessed the sources of contamination of water matrices in a rural area using detection of a host-specific virus (human adenovirus [HAdV], porcine adenovirus [PAdV] and bovine polyomaviruses [BoPyV]) as potential microbial source-tracking tool, and rotavirus A [RVA], given its epidemiological importance in Brazil. From July 2017 to June 2018, 92 samples were collected from eight points (P1-P8) of surface and raw waters in southeastern region of Brazil. Fifty-five (59.8%) were positive for HAdV, 41 (44.5%) for RVA, 10 (10.9%) for PAdV and four (4.3%) for BoPyV. HAdV and RVA were detected at all sites, and over the entire sampling period, PAdV was detected at a porcine breeding area and at Guarda River site, presenting high concentrations up to 2.6 × 109 genome copies per liter [GC/L], and viral concentrations ranging from 9.6 × 101 to 7.1 × 107, while BoPyV (1.5 × 104 GC/L-9.2 × 105 GC/L) was only detected in samples from the bovine breeding areas. The combination of human and animal virus circulation presents a potential impact in the environment due to raw sewage discharge from regional communities, as well as potential hazard to human and animal health.

Abstract
Microorganisms developed a mechanism that copes with heat, acidity, and high dissolved metal concentrations that likely first evolved. The geothermal fluids emerging in the geothermal springs of Taiwan, located at a subduction zone, are still under signs of progress in the characterization of the various microbial taxonomic changes over time. However, no systematic studies have been performed to compare water, biofilms, and sediment bacterial communities and the primary driving force of dissolved and mineral substrates capable of supporting microbial metabolism. In this study, 16S rRNA gene sequencing was employed for bacterial community exploration, and their potential metabolic pathways involved from water, biofilms, and sediment samples, collected from the geothermal valley (Ti-re-ku). Metagenomic data revealed that the water samples had higher bacterial diversity and richness than biofilms and sediment samples. At the genus level, Alicyclobacillus, Thiomonas, Acidocella, Metallibacterium, Picrophilus, and Legionella were significantly abundant in the water samples. The biofilms were rich in Aciditerrimonas, Bacillus, Acidithiobacillus, and Lysinibacillus, whereas the sediment samples were abundant in Sulfobacillus. The PICRUSt2-predicted functional results revealed that heavy metal-related functions such as heavy-metal exporter system, cobalt‑zinc‑cadmium resistance, arsenical pump, high-affinity nickel-transport, and copper resistance metabolisms were significant in the water samples. Moreover, sulfur-related pathways such as thiosulfate oxidation, dissimilatory sulfate reduction, and assimilatory sulfate reduction were important in water samples, followed by biofilms and sediment. Therefore, our findings highlighted the comparative taxonomic diversity and functional composition contributions to geothermal fluid, with implications for understanding the evolution and ecological niche dimension of microbes which are the key to geothermal ecosystem function.

Abstract
In face of the absence of epidemiological data regarding the circulation of human adenoviruses (HAdV) in Portugal, this study aimed at the evaluation of their molecular diversity in waste and environmental waters in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA). Using samples collected between 2018 and 2021, the HAdV hexon protein-coding sequence was partially amplified using three nested touch-down PCR protocols. The amplification products obtained were analyzed in parallel by two approaches: molecular cloning followed by Sanger sequencing and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) using Illumina® sequencing. The analysis of NGS-generated data allowed the identification of a higher diversity of HAdV-A (19%), -B (1%), -C (3%), -D (24%), and -F (25%) viral types, along with murine adenovirus (MAdV-2; 30%) in the wastewater treatment plant samples. On the other hand, HAdV-A (19%), -D (32%), and -F (36%) were identified in environmental samples, and possibly MAdV-2 (14%). These results demonstrate the presence of fecal contamination in environmental waters and the assessment of the diversity of this virus provides important information regarding the distribution of HAdV in LMA, including the detection of HAdV-F41, the most frequently reported in water worldwide.

Abstract
Since the first report on isolation of porcine adenovirus serotype 5 (PAdV-5, species Porcine mastadenovirus C (PAdV-C)) from pigs with respiratory illness in Japan in 1987, PAdV-5 have been detected in a few fecal samples from healthy pigs and in some environmental samples. To date, only a single PAdV-5 strain (isolate HNF-70 from 1987) has been analyzed for the complete genome. We report here high detection rates of PAdV-5 (25.74%, 26/101 fecal samples) in diarrheic pigs at 3 different farms in the Caribbean country of Dominican Republic. After a long gap, the complete deduced amino acid sequences of the DNA-dependent DNA polymerase (pol) and hexon of two PAdV-5 strains (GES7 and Z11) were determined, revealing >99% sequence identities between PAdV-5 strains (HNF-70, GES7 and Z11) detected in different parts of the world and during different time periods (1987, and 2020−2021). By phylogenetic analysis, the putative hexon and pol of HNF-70, GES7 and Z11 exhibited similar clustering patterns, with the PAdV-5 strains forming a tight cluster near ruminant AdVs, distinct from the species PAdV-A and -B. GES7 and Z11 retained the various conserved features present in the putative pol and major late promoter region of HNF-70. Considering the paucity of data on current epidemiological status and genetic diversity of PAdV in porcine populations, our findings warrant similar studies on PAdV-5 and other PAdVs in clinically ill and healthy pigs. To our knowledge, this is the first report on detection and molecular characterization of PAdV-5 (PAdV-C) from diarrheic pigs.

Abstract
The microbial characteristics of water bodies located in the outflow of hot springs may affect the water quality parameters of the associated river ecosystem. Using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, we investigated the bacterial diversity and functional profiles of the Huang Gang (HG) Creek, located in the trace metal-rich, acid-sulfate thermal springs zone of the Tatun Volcano Group (TVG). Biofilms and water samples were collected from the upstream, midstream, and geothermal valleys and downstream of the creek. The results showed that the biofilm and water samples had distinct bacterial diversity and abundance profiles. Acidophilic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were found to be more abundant in water samples, whereas aquatic photosynthetic bacterial communities were dominant in biofilms. The water samples were contaminated with Legionella and Chlamydiae, which could contaminate the nearby river and cause clinical infections in humans. The upstream samples were highly unique and displayed higher diversity than the other sites. Moderate thermo-acidophiles were dominant in the upstream and midstream regions, whereas the geothermal valley and downstream samples were abundant in thermo-acidophiles. In addition, functional profiling revealed higher expression of sulfur, arsenic, and iron-related functions in water and lead-related functions in the biofilms of the creek. As described in previous studies, the hydrochemical properties of the HG Creek were influenced by the TVG hot springs. Our findings indicated that the hydrochemical properties of the HG Creek were highly correlated with the bacterial diversity and functional potential of running water as compared to biofilms.
