Understanding noble gas incorporation in mantle minerals: an atomistic study

Ab initio calculations in forsterite (Mg2 SiO4 ) are used to gain insight into the formation of point defects and incorporation of noble gases. We calculate the enthalpies of incorporation both at pre-existing vacancies in symmetrically non-equivalent sites, and at interstitial positions. At high pressure, most structural changes affect the MgO6 units and the enthalpies of point defects increase, with those involving Mg and Si vacancies increasing more than those involving O sites. At 15 GPa Si vacancies and Mg interstitials have become the predominant intrinsic defects. We use these calculated enthalpies to estimate the total uptake of noble gases into the bulk crystal as a function of temperature and pressure both in the presence and absence of other heterovalent trace elements. For He and Ne our calculated solubilities point to atoms occupying mainly interstitial sites in agreement with previous experimental work. In contrast, Ar most likely substitutes for Mg due to its larger size and the deformation it causes within the crystal. Incorporation energies, as well as atomic distances suggest that the incorporation mainly depend on the size mismatch between host and guest atoms. Polarization effects arising from the polarizability of the noble gas atom or the presence of charged defects are minimal and do not contribute significantly to the uptake. Finally, the discrepancies between our results and recent experiments suggest that there are other incorporation mechanisms such as adsorption at internal and external interfaces, voids and grain boundaries which must play a major role in noble gas storage and solubility.

Effects of vacancy defects on Fe properties incorporated in MgO

Distributions of Fe in MgO containing Mg vacancy, O vacancy, and Schottky defect are investigated based on the density functional theory (DFT). Our results show that since Mg vacancy will remove electrons from MgO, Fe tends to get close to Mg vacancy but far from O vacancy. The Mg vacancy can decrease the magnetic moment of iron and change its valence state from 2+  to 3+, which leads to ~5% decrease of Fe-O bond length comparable to the effect of 30 GPa external pressure. Furthermore, iron incorporation can increase the Schottky defect concentration of MgO especially in the environment of the Earth's lower mantle, where ~20 mol% Fe-bearing MgO locates at extreme high temperature conditions.

Synthesis and luminescence studies of Tb-doped MgO-MgAl2O4-Mg2SiO4 ceramic for use in radiation dosimetry

In the present work, MgO ceramic samples with different terbium concentrations were produced and the Thermoluminescence (TL) and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) properties analyzed and discussed, aiming the use in radiation dosimetry. The samples were produced using MgO, Mg(NO₃)₂·6H₂O, Al₂O₃, SiO₂ and Tb(NO₃)₃·6H₂O precursors in stoichiometric concentrations with five different terbium concentrations between 0.1 and 0.5 mol% and after, heat-treated at high temperature ~1500 °C. X-ray diffraction measurements on samples showed the formation of MgO as principal phase, and others in low concentration due to MgAl₂O₄, Mg₂SiO₄ and Tb₄O₇ phases. The TL glow curve of samples showed an intense and well-defined peak having the maximum at ~210 °C and other less intense at ~350 °C. The sample with 0.1 mol% of terbium concentration presented highest luminescence peak when compared to the other samples. The relationship between 210 °C TL peak intensity and dose was linear to doses between 1 and 20 Gy and the minimum detectable dose obtained by interpolation taking into account three times the standard deviation of the zero dose reading, was ~40 μGy. A fading of ~20% during the first 5 hours after irradiation of 210 °C peak was observed. TL emission spectra showed strong emission lines due to Tb³⁺ ion. The OSL signal presented a linear behavior to doses between 1 and 10 Gy using 532 nm wavelength stimulation.

Surface Reactivity of Magnesium Alloys in Solid and Liquid States

The major factors, controlling surface degradation of magnesium alloys in oxygen‑containing atmospheres at temperatures of solid and liquid states, are reviewed. While thin oxide films, formed during initial stages, exhibit some protective behaviour, thick scales grown at high temperatures do not block the outward diffusion of metal ions, leading to non-protective oxidation. The high vapour pressure of magnesium increases surface degradation and reduces effectiveness of inert atmospheres. Thus, both the solid and liquid states rely on the formation of compact oxide layers on the metallic surface, suppressing evaporation and oxidation. The role of protective atmospheres and alloy chemistry in reducing surface reactivity is discussed.
