Climatic control on the location of continental volcanic arcs

Orogens and volcanic arcs at continental plate margins are primary surface expressions of convergent plate tectonics. Although it is established that climate affects the shape, size, and architecture of orogens via orographic erosion gradients, the ascent of magma through the crust and location of volcanoes along magmatic arcs have been considered insensitive to erosion. However, available data reveal westward migration of late-Cenozoic volcanic activity in the Southern Andes and Cascade Range where orography drives an eastward migration of the topographic water divide by increased precipitation and erosion along west-facing slopes. Thermomechanical numerical modeling shows that orographic erosion and the associated leeward topographic migration may entail asymmetric crustal structures that drive the magma ascent toward the region of enhanced erosion. Despite the different tectonic histories of the Southern Andes and the Cascade Range, orographic erosion is a shared causal mechanism that can explain the late-Cenozoic westward migration of the volcanic front along both magmatic arcs.

Growth of Neogene Andes linked to changes in plate convergence using high-resolution kinematic models

The Andean cordillera was constructed during compressive tectonic events, whose causes and controls remain unclear. Exploring a possible link to plate convergence has been impeded by the coarse temporal resolution of existing plate kinematic models. Here we show that the Neogene evolution of the Andean margin is primarily related to changes in convergence as observed in new high-resolution plate reconstructions. Building on a compilation of plate finite rotations spanning the last 30 million years and using noise-mitigation techniques, we predict several short-term convergence changes that were unresolved in previous models. These changes are related to main tectono-magmatic events and require forces that are compatible with a range of geodynamic processes. These results allow to revise models of ongoing subduction orogeny at its type locality, emphasizing the role of upper plate deformation in the balance between kinematic energy associated with plate motion and gravitational potential energy stored in orogenic crustal roots.

A high-resolution model of the motion between Nazca and South American plates is presented. The work shows rapid changes that help explaining tectono-magmatic events via a balance between kinematic energy and gravitational potential energy stored in the roots of the Andes.

GRACE Data Explore Moho Change Characteristics Beneath the South America Continent near the Chile Triple Junction

The internal and external mass migration and redistribution of the Earth system are usually accompanied by changes in the gravity field, and the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) has been proven to be able to effectively monitor and evaluate such changes. The Chile Triple Junction (CTJ) is the convergence point of the Nazca plate, the Antarctic plate and the South American plate. Subductions of different forms and rates in the north and south of the CTJ have varying degrees of impact on the surface and underground material changes of the South American plate. In this study, GRACE data are used in the estimation of the comprehensive mass changes in the South America Continent (SAC) Near the CTJ (~15° range). In addition, surface movement changes constrained by GNSS data cannot fully explain the GRACE results after deducting hydrological information, which indicates that residual signals might be attributed to mass changes beneath the crust, that is, the Moho interface deformation. After eliminating surface movement and hydrological signals from the comprehensive mass changes of GRACE, this study obtains the deep structural information and calculates the Moho changes of three significant regions with rates of −2.12 ± 0.67 cm/yr, 0.18 ± 0.19 cm/yr and −6.46 ± 1.31 cm/yr, respectively. Results have demonstrated that the subductions of the Nazca plate and the Antarctica plate have an effect on the uneven deformation of the Moho interface beneath the SAC. The Moho beneath the SAC mainly shows a deepening trend, but it is uplifted in some areas north of CTJ. On the whole, the rate of Moho changes is greater in the south than in the north. The relationship between Moho changes and surface changes also indicates that a longer timescale may be needed for maintaining isostatic balance.

Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Seabed Sediments of the Chiloé–Taitao Area, Southern Chile, and Implications for Ore Deposits

The oceanic seabed contains a variety of mineral resources related exclusively to submarine environments. Limited information has been documented for the seabed offshore of Chile, which is particularly interesting due to its geodynamic context and large area. Mineralogical and geochemical analyses of 16 sites within the Chiloé–Taitao area, from 83 to 3388 m in depth, were carried out. The most abundant minerals are quartz, feldspars, pyroxenes, amphiboles, epidote, and biotite, with lower quantities of zircon, white mica, olivine, pyrite, magnetite, ilmenite, and hematite. Framboidal pyrites are mainly present at >900 m depth, and could be associated with methane hydrates, which have been reported in the area and its surroundings. Tenorite, sphalerite, tennantite, cordierite, birnessite, and tellurobismuthite were revealed by XRD analysis at low concentrations but at many sites. Birnessite, a Fe–Mn nodule-forming mineral, was widely detected, and Pearson correlations showed elemental associations related to the presence of Mn oxides. Samples did not evidence Fe–Mn nodules, probably due to the redox and depth conditions. Nonetheless, it is probable that to the west, polymetallic nodules are present in deeper zones. In the southern part of the area, reflective grains were identified, with up to 58.3 wt.% Cu; these grains might be derived from the continent or formed by in situ diagenetic precipitation.
