The Dependence of Sea SAR Image Distribution Parameters on Surface Wave Characteristics

Modeling the statistical distribution of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is essential for sea target detection, which is an important aspect of marine SAR applications. The main goal of this study is to determine the effects of sea states and surface wave texture characteristics on the statistical distributions of sea SAR images. A statistical analysis of the Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) wave mode images (imagettes), covering a variety of sea states and wave conditions, was carried out to investigate the suitability of the statistical distributions often used in the literature for sea states parameters. The results revealed the variation in the distribution parameters in terms of their azimuthal cutoff wavelength (ACW) and the peak-to-background ratio (PBR) of the SAR image intensity spectra. The shape parameters of Gamma and Weibull distribution are sensitive and monotonously decreasing with respect to PBR, while the scale parameter is sensitive to ACW. The K distribution was shown to perform well, with both high and stable accuracy. The results of this paper provide a parameterized scheme for sea state classifications and can potentially be used for choosing the most suitable distribution model according to sea state when performing sea target detection.

Validation and Parameter Sensitivity Tests for Reconstructing Swell Field Based on an Ensemble Kalman Filter

The swell propagation model built on geometric optics is known to work well when simulating radiated swells from a far located storm. Based on this simple approximation, satellites have acquired plenty of large samples on basin-traversing swells induced by fierce storms situated in mid-latitudes. How to routinely reconstruct swell fields with these irregularly sampled observations from space via known swell propagation principle requires more examination. In this study, we apply 3-h interval pseudo SAR observations in the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) to reconstruct a swell field in ocean basin, and compare it with buoy swell partitions and polynomial regression results. As validated against in situ measurements, EnKF works well in terms of spatial-temporal consistency in far-field swell propagation scenarios. Using this framework, we further address the influence of EnKF parameters, and perform a sensitivity analysis to evaluate estimations made under different sets of parameters. Such analysis is of key interest with respect to future multiple-source routinely recorded swell field data. Satellite-derived swell data can serve as a valuable complementary dataset to in situ or wave re-analysis datasets.

On the retrieval of significant wave heights from spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (ERS-SAR) using the Max-Planck Institut (MPI) algorithm

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) onboard satellites is the only source of directional wave spectra with continuous and global coverage. Millions of SAR Wave Mode (SWM) imagettes have been acquired since the launch in the early 1990's of the first European Remote Sensing Satellite ERS-1 and its successors ERS-2 and ENVISAT, which has opened up many possibilities specially for wave data assimilation purposes. The main aim of data assimilation is to improve the forecasting introducing available observations into the modeling procedures in order to minimize the differences between model estimates and measurements. However there are limitations in the retrieval of the directional spectrum from SAR images due to nonlinearities in the mapping mechanism. The Max-Planck Institut (MPI) scheme, the first proposed and most widely used algorithm to retrieve directional wave spectra from SAR images, is employed to compare significant wave heights retrieved from ERS-1 SAR against buoy measurements and against the WAM wave model. It is shown that for periods shorter than 12 seconds the WAM model performs better than the MPI, despite the fact that the model is used as first guess to the MPI method, that is the retrieval is deteriorating the first guess. For periods longer than 12 seconds, the part of the spectrum that is directly measured by SAR, the performance of the MPI scheme is at least as good as the WAM model.
