Combined resistive and laser heating technique for in situ radial X-ray diffraction in the diamond anvil cell at high pressure and temperature

To extend the range of high-temperature, high-pressure studies within the diamond anvil cell, a Liermann-type diamond anvil cell with radial diffraction geometry (rDAC) was redesigned and developed for synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments at beamline 12.2.2 of the Advanced Light Source. The rDAC, equipped with graphite heating arrays, allows simultaneous resistive and laser heating while the material is subjected to high pressure. The goals are both to extend the temperature range of external (resistive) heating and to produce environments with lower temperature gradients in a simultaneously resistive- and laser-heated rDAC. Three different geomaterials were used as pilot samples to calibrate and optimize conditions for combined resistive and laser heating. For example, in Run#1, FeO was loaded in a boron-mica gasket and compressed to 11 GPa then gradually resistively heated to 1007 K (1073 K at the diamond side). The laser heating was further applied to FeO to raise temperature to 2273 K. In Run#2, Fe-Ni alloy was compressed to 18 GPa and resistively heated to 1785 K (1973 K at the diamond side). The combined resistive and laser heating was successfully performed again on (Mg0.9Fe0.1)O in Run#3. In this instance, the sample was loaded in a boron-kapton gasket, compressed to 29 GPa, resistive-heated up to 1007 K (1073 K at the diamond side), and further simultaneously laser-heated to achieve a temperature in excess of 2273 K at the sample position. Diffraction patterns obtained from the experiments were deconvoluted using the Rietveld method and quantified for lattice preferred orientation of each material under extreme conditions and during phase transformation.

Elastic and anelastic anomalies associated with the antiferromagnetic ordering transition in wüstite, FexO

The elastic and anelastic properties of three different samples of Fe(x)O have been determined in the frequency range 0.1-2 MHz by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy and in the range 0.1-50 Hz by dynamic mechanical analysis in order to characterize ferroelastic aspects of the magnetic ordering transition at T(N) ~ 195 K. No evidence was found of separate structural and magnetic transitions but softening of the shear modulus was consistent with the involvement of bilinear coupling, λe(4)q, between a symmetry-breaking strain, e(4), and a structural order parameter, q. Unlike a purely ferroelastic transition, however, C(44) does not go to zero at the critical temperature, T*(c), due to the intervention of the magnetic ordering at a higher temperature. The overall pattern of behaviour is nevertheless consistent with what would be expected for a system with separate structural and magnetic instabilities, linear-quadratic coupling between the structural (q) and magnetic (m) driving order parameters, λqm(2), and T(N) > T*(c). Comparison with data from the literature appears to confirm the same pattern in MnO and NiO, with a smaller difference between T(N) and T*(c) in the former and a larger difference in the latter. Strong attenuation of acoustic resonances at high frequencies and a familiar pattern of attenuation at low frequencies suggest that twin walls in the rhombohedral phase have typical ferroelastic properties. Acoustic dissipation in the stability field of the cubic phase is tentatively attributed to anelastic relaxations of the defect ordered structure of non-stoichiometric wüstite or of the interface between local regions of wüstite and magnetite, with a rate controlling step determined by the diffusion of iron.

Effect of defects on the elastic properties of Wustite

Wustite (FexO) has been studied under static high pressure in the composition range x = 0.95-0.99. Fe0.99O is substantially less compressible than FexO with x<0.98. Such observations provide the only direct evidence of a significant effect of defect concentration on the elastic properties and support the results of crystal-field modeling for ideal stoichiometric wustite. The bulk moduli of FexO show a discontinuous variation at compositions that are within the predicted range for the defect clusters to form, a behavior that may be caused by an order-disorder transition of the defect structure.

Thermal equation of state of aluminum-enriched silicate perovskite

Inferences of the chemical homogeneity of Earth's mantle depend on comparing laboratory-derived equations of state of mantle phases with seismically determined properties of the material in situ. A uniform chemical composition of the entire mantle has been found to be consistent with measurements, to date, of these properties for the end-member MgSiO3 perovskite phase. New pressure-volume-temperature data for silicate perovskite containing 5 mole percent Al2O3 has yielded different values of the equation of state parameters, with the bulk modulus being significantly smaller at lower mantle conditions than for aluminum-free perovskite, thus requiring adjustments in other components to match seismic observations.
