Signal processing and calibration procedures for in situ diode-laser absorption spectroscopy

Gas analyzers based on tunable diode-laser spectroscopy (TDLS) provide high sensitivity, fast response and highly specific in situ measurements of several atmospheric trace gases simultaneously. Under optimum conditions even a shot noise limited performance can be obtained. For field applications outside the laboratory practical limitations are important. At ambient mixing ratios below a few parts-per-billion spectrometers become more and more sensitive towards noise, interference, drift effects and background changes associated with low level signals. It is the purpose of this review to address some of the problems which are encountered at these low levels and to describe a signal processing strategy for trace gas monitoring and a concept for in situ system calibration applicable for tunable diode-laser spectroscopy. To meet the requirement of quality assurance for field measurements and monitoring applications, procedures to check the linearity according to International Standard Organization regulations are described and some measurements of calibration functions are presented and discussed.

Absolute Line Intensities for the nu6 Band of H2O2

The purpose of this work was to obtain reliable absolute intensities for the nu6 band of H2O2. It was undertaken because strong discrepancies exist between the different nu6 band intensities which are presently available in the literature (A. Perrin, A. Valentin, J.-M. Flaud, C. Camy-Peyret, L. Schriver, A. Schriver, and P. Arcas, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 1995. 171, 358), (R. May, J. Quant. Radiat. Transfer 1991. 45, 267), and (R. L. Sams, personal communication). The method which was chosen in the present work was to measure simultaneously the far-infrared absorptions and the nu6 absorptions of H2O2. Consequently, Fourier transform spectra of H2O2 were recorded at Giessen in a spectral range (370-1270 cm-1) which covers both the R branch of the torsion-rotation band and the P branch of the nu6 band which appear at low and high wavenumbers, respectively. From the low wavenumber data, the partial pressure of H2O2 present in the cell during the recording of the spectra was determined by calibrating the observed absorptions in the torsion-rotation band with intensities computed using the permanent H2O2 dipole moment measured by Stark effect (A. Perrin, J.-M. Flaud, C. Camy-Peyret, R. Schermaul, M. Winnewisser, J.-Y. Mandin, V. Dana, M. Badaoui, and J. Koput, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 1996. 176, 287-296) and [E. A. Cohen and H. M. Pickett, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 1981. 87, 582-583). In the high frequency range, this value of the partial pressure of H2O2 was used to measure absolute line intensities in the nu6 band. Finally, the line intensities in the nu6 band were fitted using the theoretical methods described in detail in our previous works. Using these new results on line intensities together with the line position parameters that we obtained previously, a new synthetic spectra of the nu6 band was generated, leading to a total band intensity of 0.185 x 10(-16) cm-1/(molecule.cm-2) at 296 K. It has to be pointed out that the new line intensities agree to within the experimental uncertainties with the individual line intensity measurements performed previously by May and by Sams. Aircraft (ER-2) laser infrared absorption spectrometer (ALIAS) for in-situ stratospheric measurements of HCI, N(2)O, CH(4), NO(2), and HNO(3)

The Aircraft Laser Infrared Absorption Spectrometer (ALIAS) instrument is a high-resolution (0.0003 cm-(1)) scanning tunable-diode-laser spectrometer designed, tested, and flown more than 30 times on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's high-altitude ER-2 aircraft in the Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition of 1991-1992. Using long-path infrared laser absorption spectroscopy to detect optical absorptions as small as 10-(5), ALIAS provides fast, continuous in-situ measurements of key atmospheric gases, with gas detection sensitivities of tens of parts in 10(12). With four lasers and detectors in a single liquid-nitrogen Dewar, simultaneous measurements of HCI, NO(2), HNO(3), CH(4), and N(2)O are made using laser sources at 3.4-8 µm, injected into a 1-m-long, 80-pass Herriott cell.

Airborne tunable diode laser spectrometer for trace-gas measurement in the lower stratosphere

This paper describes the airborne tunable laser absorption spectrometer, a tunable diode laser instrument designed for in situ trace-gas measurement in the lower stratosphere from an ER-2 high-altitude research aircraft. Laser-wavelength modulation and second-harmonic detection are employed to achieve the required constituent detection sensitivity. The airborne tunable laser absorption spectrometer was used in two polar ozone campaigns, the Airborne Antarctic Ozone Experiment and the Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition, and measured nitrous oxide with a response time of Is and an accuracy ≤ 10%.

Chlorine Chemistry on Polar Stratospheric Cloud Particles in the Arctic Winter

Simultaneous in situ measurements of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and chlorine monoxide (ClO) in the Arctic winter vortex showed large HCl losses, of up to 1 part per billion by volume (ppbv), which were correlated with high ClO levels of up to 1.4 ppbv. Air parcel trajectory analysis identified that this conversion of inorganic chlorine occurred at air temperatures of less than 196 +/- 4 kelvin. High ClO was always accompanied by loss of HCI mixing ratios equal to (1/2)(ClO + 2Cl(2)O(2)). These data indicate that the heterogeneous reaction HCl + ClONO(2) --> Cl(2) + HNO(3) on particles of polar stratospheric clouds establishes the chlorine partitioning, which, contrary to earlier notions, begins with an excess of ClONO(2), not HCl.

Infrared measurements of HF and HCl total column abundances above Kitt Peak, 1977-1990: seasonal cycles, long-term increases, and comparisons with model calculations

Series of high-resolution (approximately 0.01 cm-1) solar absorption spectra recorded with the McMath Fourier transform spectrometer on Kitt Peak (altitude 2.09 km, 31.9 degrees N, 111.6 degrees W) have been analyzed to deduce total column amounts of HF on 93 different days and HCl on 35 different days between May 1977 and June 1990. The results are based on the analysis of the HF and H35Cl (1-0) vibration-rotation band R(1) lines which are located at 4038.9625 and 2925.8970 cm-1, respectively. All of the data were analyzed using a multilayer, nonlinear least squares spectral fitting procedure and a consistent set of spectroscopic line parameters. The results indicate a rapid increase in total HF and a more gradual increase in total HCl with both trends superimposed on short-term variability. In addition, the total columns of both gases undergo a seasonal cycle with an early spring maximum and an early fall minimum, with peak-to-peak amplitudes equal to 25% for HF and 13% for HCl. In the case of HF, the changes over the 13 years of measurement are sufficiently large to determine that a better fit is obtained assuming a linear rather than an exponential increase with time. For HCl, linear and exponential models fit the data equally well. Referenced to calendar year 1981.0 and assuming a sinusoidal seasonal cycle superimposed on a linear total column increase with time, HF and HCl increase rates of (10.9 +/- 1.1)% yr-1 and (5.1 +/- 0.7)% yr-1 and total columns of (3.17 +/- 0.11) x 10(14) and (1.92 +/- 0.06) x 10(15) molecules cm-2 (2 sigma) are derived, respectively; the corresponding best fit mean exponential increase rates are equal to (7.6 +/- 0.6)% yr-1 and (4.2 +/- 0.5)% yr-1 (2 sigma). Over the 13-year observing period, the HF and HCl total columns increased by factors of 3.2 and 1.8, respectively. Based on HF and HCl total columns deduced from measurements on the same day, the HF/HCl total columns ratio increased from 0.14 in May 1977 to 0.23 in June 1990. Short-term temporal variations in the HF and HCl total columns are highly correlated; these fluctuations are believed to be caused by dynamical variability in the lower stratosphere. The results of this investigation are compared with previously reported measurements and with time-dependent, two-dimensional model calculations of HF and HCl total columns based on emission histories and photo-oxidation rates for the source molecules.

Tunable diode laser IR spectrometer for in situ measurements of the gas phase composition and particle size distribution of Titan's atmosphere

A new instrument, the Probe Infrared Laser Spectrometer (PIRLS), is described for in situ sensing of the gas composition and particle size distribution of Titan's atmosphere on the NASA/ESA Saturn Orbiter/Titan Probe Cassini Mission. For gas composition measurements, several narrow bandwidth (0.0001 cm(-l)) tunable lead-salt diode lasers operating near 80 K at selected, mid-IR wavelengths (3-16 microm) are directed over a pathlength defined by a small reflector extending over the edge of the probe spacecraft platform; volume mixing ratios of 10(-9) should be measurable for several species of interest. A cloud particle size spectrometer using a diode laser source at 0.78 microm shares the optical path and deployed reflector; a combination of imaging and light scattering techniques will be used to determine sizes of haze and cloud particles and their number density as a function of altitude.
