Hallermann Streiff syndrome: Cranio-facial manifestations systematic review and report of two cases

Hallermann Streiff syndrome (HSS) is a rare congenital abnormality with about 200 case reports in the literature. Its etiology is unknown although it may be due to a sporadic mutation. Diagnosis is based on the association of craniofacial malformation, dental abnormalities, hypotrichosis, atrophy of the skin, proportionate nanism, congenital cataract and bilateral microphtalmos. Cranio-facial deformities are the main signs detected and the most easily recognizable. We report cranio-facial and oral signs from a systemic literature review, and illustrate our findings with two of our patients diagnosed with HSS. Common cranio-facial manifestations are craniofacial malformation with a « parrot beak » nose, micrognathia, aprominent skull, sutures closing anomaly, malocclusion, dental anomalies, eyebrows and eyelash lack and atrophy of the nose skin. Knowledge of these signs should allow for early diagnosis and adequate treatment and follow up.

Long term NIV in an infant with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome: A case report and overview of respiratory morbidity

Hallermann-Streiff syndrome (HSS) is a rare congenital syndrome with different anomalies including midface hypoplasia, beak nose and micrognathia. The upper airways narrowness can lead to severe respiratory complications such as obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), particularly in infancy. The management of these severe OSAS is difficult and poorly documented in literature. We report the case of an infant with HSS complicated by severe and early OSAS successfully managed with non-invasive ventilation (NIV), provide an overview of respiratory morbidities and discuss treatment options for HSS-related OSAS.

Diagnosis, Early Care, and Treatment of Hallermann-Streiff Syndrome: A Review of the Literature

Hallermann-Streiff syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by a wide spectrum of craniofacial abnormalities. A review of the available literature reveals that only approximately 200 cases of the disease have been reported worldwide. For this article, we performed a literature review as a basis for a proposed scheme for early care and treatment. A comprehensive database search was carried out with the use of Medline (PubMed), ISI Web of Science, and ScienceDirect/Scopus. Of the 551 studies initially found, an evaluation using inclusion and exclusion criteria ultimately resulted in a total of 33 articles. Most of the articles are case reports, and only approximately 20% of these articles include treatment options. We propose an early care and treatment schedule based on the presented symptoms. Implant Rehabilitation for a Patient With Hallerman-Streiff Syndrome: A Case Report

Hallermann-Streiff syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by craniofacial malformations, sparse hair, eye abnormalities, dental defects, degenerative skin changes, and short stature. The syndrome has many implications for dental treatment. Patients typically present with multiple missing and poorly formed teeth. The purpose of this case report is to discuss the overall management of a patient with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome by oral maxillofacial surgery, orthodontic treatment, and prosthodontic reconstruction.

Congenital deformities and developmental abnormalities of the mandibular condyle in the temporomandibular joint

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) consists of the mandibular condyle and the articular eminence of the temporal bone. The morphological development of the TMJ during prenatal life lags behind other joints in terms of both the timing of its appearance and its progress. At birth, the joint is still largely underdeveloped. There are many causes of the various growth disturbances and abnormalities of the mandibular condyle and related structures. Growth disturbances in the development of the mandibular condyle may occur in utero late in the first trimester and may result in disorders such as aplasia or hypoplasia of the mandibular condyle. Meanwhile, hyperplasia of the mandibular condyle is not visible at birth and seems to be gradually acquired during growth. In the present review article, the congenital abnormalities of the mandibular condyle are classified morphologically into three major groups and two subgroups from a clinical standpoint: (1) hypoplasia or aplasia of the mandibular condyle, including (i) primary condylar aplasia and hypoplasia, (ii) secondary condylar hypoplasia; (2) hyperplasia; and (3) bifidity. In addition, the molecular-based etiology of anomalies of the mandibular condyle is also discussed.
