The effects of internal versus external information processing on symptom perception in an exercise setting

Effects of the Visual Exercise Environments on Cognitive Directed Attention, Energy Expenditure and Perceived Exertion

Green exercise research often reports psychological health outcomes without rigorously controlling exercise. This study examines effects of visual exercise environments on directed attention, perceived exertion and time to exhaustion, whilst measuring and controlling the exercise component. Participants completed three experimental conditions in a randomized counterbalanced order. Conditions varied by video content viewed (nature; built; control) during two consistently-ordered exercise bouts (Exercise 1: 60% VO2peakInt for 15-mins; Exercise 2: 85% VO2peakInt to voluntary exhaustion). In each condition, participants completed modified Backwards Digit Span tests (a measure of directed attention) pre- and post-Exercise 1. Energy expenditure, respiratory exchange ratio and perceived exertion were measured during both exercise bouts. Time to exhaustion in Exercise 2 was also recorded. There was a significant time by condition interaction for Backwards Digit Span scores (F2,22 = 6.267, p = 0.007). Scores significantly improved in the nature condition (p < 0.001) but did not in the built or control conditions. There were no significant differences between conditions for either perceived exertion or physiological measures during either Exercise 1 or Exercise 2, or for time to exhaustion in Exercise 2. This was the first study to demonstrate effects of controlled exercise conducted in different visual environments on post-exercise directed attention. Via psychological mechanisms alone, visual nature facilitates attention restoration during moderate-intensity exercise.

Do 'mind over muscle' strategies work? Examining the effects of attentional association and dissociation on exertional, affective and physiological responses to exercise

Despite the well established physical and psychological benefits derived from leading a physically active life, rates of sedentary behaviour remain high. Dropout and non-compliance are major contributors to the problem of physical inactivity. Perceptions of exertion, affective responses (e.g. displeasure or discomfort), and physiological stress could make the exercise experience aversive, particularly for beginners. Shifting one's attentional focus towards environmental stimuli (dissociation) instead of one's body (association) has been theorized to enhance psychological responses and attenuate physiological stress. Research evidence on the effectiveness of attentional focus strategies, however, has been perplexing, covering the entire gamut of possible outcomes (association and dissociation having been shown to be both effective and ineffective). This article examines the effects of manipulations of attentional focus on exertional and affective responses, as well as on exercise economy and tolerance. The possible roles of the characteristics of the exercise stimulus (intensity, duration) and the exercise participants, methodological issues, and limitations of experimental designs are discussed. In particular, the critical role of exercise intensity is emphasized. Dissociative strategies may be more effective in reducing perceptions of exertion and enhancing affective responses at low to moderate exercise intensities, but their effectiveness may be diminished at higher and near-maximal levels, at which physiological cues dominate. Conversely, associative strategies could enable the exerciser to regulate intensity to avoid injury or overexertion. Thus, depending on intensity, both strategies have a place in the 'toolbox' of the public health or exercise practitioner as methods of enhancing the exercise experience and promoting long-term compliance.

Current perspectives on symptom perception in asthma: a biomedical and psychological review

Symptom perception in patients with asthma is often inadequate. Patients may fail to perceive serious airway obstruction or suffer from breathlessness without objective cause. These extremes are associated with fatal asthma and excessive use of medicines, respectively. This article covers symptom perception in a multidisciplinary perspective. A presentation of current definitions and methods for studying symptom perception in asthma is followed by a summary of theories on the origin of breathlessness. Next, biomedical and psychological factors influencing symptom perception are examined. Preliminary biomedical research emphasizes neural pathway impairment, but causal factors remain inconclusive, particularly regarding the overperception of symptoms. Psychological studies suggest that the accuracy of symptom perception is influenced by (a) competition between asthmatic and nonasthmatic sensory information, (b) negative emotions, and (c) acquired response tendencies (e.g. habituation to symptoms, repression of symptoms, selective perception, and false interpretation of symptoms). These factors may favor either blunted perception or overperception. Empirical data in support of psychological factors are still insufficient. Methodological problems and procedures to improve symptom perception are discussed.

Acute emotional and cardiovascular effects of stressful mental work during aerobic exercise

The acute effects of engaging in challenging mental work during a single session of aerobic exercise were examined on measures of subjective mood and cardiovascular function. Fifty-seven female subjects were randomly assigned to participate in either a 10-min aerobic exercise condition or a no-exercise control condition. Half of the subjects in each group performed digits backward problems during this time period, and no mental stressors were presented to the other subjects. The results indicated that the exercise and mental stress conditions had additive effects on subjective anxiety levels and on cardiovascular responses during exercise. Both exercise and mental stress increased heart rate. In addition, exercise had anti-anxiety and vasodilative effects, but both of these influences were attenuated by opposing main effects for mental stress exposure. No effects were found for exercise on measures of cardiovascular reactivity to a later digits backward stressor. The results are consistent with previous research in suggesting that exposure to mental stressors during aerobic exercise provides no acute psychological benefits but attenuates some of the mood improvements and vasodilative effects of the exercise activity.

Acute emotional and psychophysiological effects of aerobic exercise

An experiment was conducted to examine the acute emotional and psychophysiological effects of a single bout of aerobic exercise. Forty active and 40 inactive college students were randomly assigned to an aerobic exercise or a waiting-period control condition. Self-report measures of mood and cardiovascular response measures to challenging cognitive tasks were collected before and after the 20-min exercise/control period to examine any exercise-induced changes. The results indicated that mood was significantly altered by the exercise activity, with reductions in tension and anxiety specifically evident. Exercise was not found to have any effects on cardiovascular reactivity. A test of aerobic fitness confirmed fitness differences between active and inactive participants, but no mood or reactivity effects related to activity status were obtained. These results suggest that both active and inactive individuals experience acute reductions in anxiety following single bouts of exercise, even in the absence of changes in cardiovascular reactivity. Implications for the continued investigation of the acute effects of exercise are discussed.
