Repetition blindness for words and pictures: A failure to form stable type representations?

Repetition blindness (RB) is the failure to detect and report a repeated item during rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP). The RB literature reveals consistent and robust RB for word stimuli, but somewhat variable RB effects for pictorial stimuli. We directly compared RB for object pictures and their word labels, using exactly the same procedure in the same participants. Experiment 1 used a large pool of stimuli that only occurred once during the experiment and found significant RB for words, but significant repetition facilitation for pictures. These differential repetition effects were replicated when the task required participants to only report the last item of the stream. Experiment 2 used a small pool of stimuli presented several times throughout the experiment. Significant RB was found for both words and pictures, although it was more pronounced for words. These findings present a challenge to the token individuation hypothesis (Kanwisher, Cognition, 27, 117-143, 1987) and suggest that RB is more likely to be due to a difficulty in establishing a robust type representation. We propose that an experimental context that contains high levels of overlap in visual features (e.g., letters in the case of words, visual fragments in the case of repeatedly presented pictures) may prevent the formation of distinct object-level episodic representations, resulting in RB.

Survival of the grouped, or three's a crowd? Repetition blindness in groups of letters and words

When stimuli are presented rapidly, repetitions are often undetected--a phenomenon called "repetition blindness" (RB; Kanwisher Cognition, 27, 117-143, 1987). Grouping of nonlinguistic items has been found to prevent RB (Goldfarb & Treisman Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 18, 1042-1049, 2011). In order to determine whether this effect could be found with letters and words, participants viewed rapid serial visual presentation and brief simultaneous visual presentation streams containing groups of linguistic stimuli and provided judgments of frequency. The collection of reaction times and an explicit question about strategy use allowed for analyses of the participants' processing strategies. Two groups of participants emerged: one that demonstrated RB for groups of stimuli, and another that demonstrated enhanced perception with stimulus grouping. These participant groups did not appear to differ on the basis of explicit processing strategies or reaction times.

When words collide: facilitation and interference in the report of repeated words from rapidly presented lists

Inhibited encoding is the basis of some accounts of repetition blindness--impaired report of the second occurrence of a repeated word in a rapidly presented word sequence. The author presents evidence for the claim that repetition effects arise from constructive processes of perception and memory that occur to some extent after the word sequence has been presented. Unpredictable postlist cues prompted subjects to report either the entire list or just the final word in the list. Repetition impaired the report of the second occurrence of a repeated word under full report but facilitated the report of such items when only the final word had to be reported. The author modulated this dissociation by presenting repeated words in sentences rather than unrelated word lists. The sensitivity of the effects of repetition to postlist cues supports a construction rather than an encoding inhibition account of repetition blindness.

Repetition Blindness: Out of Sight or Out of Mind?

Does repetition blindness represent a failure of perception or of memory? In Experiment 1, participants viewed rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) sentences. When critical words (C1 and C2) were orthographically similar, C2 was frequently omitted from serial report; however, repetition priming for C2 on a postsentence lexical decision task was equivalent whether or not C1 was similar to C2. In Experiment 2, participants monitored RSVP sentences for a predetermined target. Participants frequently failed to detect the target when it was preceded by an orthographically similar word. In Experiment 3, the authors investigated the role of the attentional blink in this effect. These experiments suggest that repetition blindness is a failure of conscious perception, consistent with predictions of the token-individuation hypothesis.
