Application of the Nursing Model Based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in Improving Mental Health and Quality of Life after Colorectal Cancer Drug Chemotherapy

According to the most current cancer impact statistics, third most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide is colorectal cancer. Colon cancer, in addition to its physical symptoms, has been linked to mental health issues in patients, according to the study. Dealing with colorectal cancer drug chemotherapy may lead to depression and anxiety in some people. Others are affected by the physical and mental condition of undergoing many therapies at the same time. Throughout the process of diagnosis, a large number of colorectal cancer patients report clinically relevant degrees as well as a decline in overall mental wellness. In the majority of cases, colon cancer patients are cured following therapy, but those who have survived the disease confront a medical range, physical, and challenges in society, for a variety of mental and physical problems such as anxiety and depression. First, meditation therapy is to urge patients to address their issues and feelings instead of dismissing them, but in the dispassionate and unbiased manner that defines the attentive state. Both the patient and the treating professional may benefit from this treatment method, since it appears to be a very effective therapeutic strategy. After colorectal cancer treatment, in studies, it has been demonstrated that ACT improves mental health, and Internet search engines such as Web of Science and Google Scholar as well as Dialnet were utilized to conduct a systematic literature There were 19 articles that fit the criteria. This includes a discussion of the ACT's philosophical and theoretical basis, as well as the treatment itself. On the other hand, the study on ACT for enhancing mental health and quality of life is examined. Several of the available trials had serious flaws, making it impossible to establish reliable conclusions about the effectiveness of ACT for improving mental health and quality of life. The study determined that there is only a small amount of data supporting the use of ACT for improving mental health. The aim of this study is the application of the nursing model on improving the mental health of the colorectal patients. In addition, the limits of the current empirical state of ACT are acknowledged, and the importance of further research is highlighted.

The Contribution of Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction to Psychological Well-Being via Autonomous Motivation Among Older Adults: A Cross-Cultural Study in China and France

According to self-determination theory (SDT), the satisfaction of the universal needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness is important in order to enhance autonomous motivation, which in turn promotes psychological well-being (PWB), regardless of age or culture. In contrast, some cross-cultural perspectives challenge SDT's universalistic viewpoint, especially SDT's view that autonomy yields universal positive effects across Western and Eastern societies. To test these theoretical frameworks across cultures, with special focus on the field of aging, this study examined the contribution of satisfying basic psychological needs to elderly people's PWB from Eastern and Western cultures (China and France). Elderly retired people living at home (N_China = 510, M_age = 68.49 years; N_France = 170, M_age = 71.19 years) were invited to complete surveys assessing these variables and providing demographic information. Consistent with the hypothesis of SDT, results from structural equation modeling (SEM) indicated that needs satisfaction facilitates autonomous motivation, which in turn promotes PWB in both elderly Chinese and French. Moreover, the finding from subsequent moderation analysis confirmed the moderating effect of culture in the relationship between competence satisfaction and PWB, with the contribution of competence satisfaction on PWB being stronger among elderly Chinese than elderly French (p < 0.05). Our findings suggest that, the broad applicability of SDT notwithstanding, attending to cultural differences in elderly care remains important.

Pretreatment motivation and therapy outcomes in eating disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

Identifying modifiable predictors of outcomes following treatment for eating disorders may help to tailor interventions to patients' individual needs, improve treatment efficacy, and develop new interventions. The goal of this meta-analysis was to quantify the association between pretreatment motivation and posttreatment changes in eating disorder symptomology.

METHOD

We reviewed 196 longitudinal studies reporting on change on indices of overall eating-disorder symptomatology, weight gain, binge-eating, vomiting, anxiety/depression, and treatment adherence. Meta-analyses were performed using two complementary approaches: (a) combined probability analysis using the added Z's method; (b) effect size analyses. Using random-effect models, effect sizes were pooled when there were at least three studies with the same type of statistical design and reporting statistics on the same outcome. Heterogeneity in study outcome was evaluated using Q and I² statistics. Studies were reviewed qualitatively when the number of studies or reported data were insufficient to perform a meta-analysis.

RESULTS

Forty-two articles were included. Although samples and treatments differed substantially across studies, results across studies were remarkably consistent. Both combined-probability and effect-size analyses indicated positive effects of pretreatment motivation on improvement in general eating-disorder symptoms (Cohen's r = .17), and an absence of effects on anxiety/depression symptoms. Remaining outcome indices were subject to selective reporting and/or small sample size bias.

DISCUSSION

Our findings underscore the importance of incorporating treatment engagement approaches in the treatment of eating disorders. Optimal reporting of study findings and improving study quality would improve future efforts to obtain an in-depth understanding of the relationship between motivation and eating disorder symptoms.

Validation of the Chinese version General Causality Orientation Scale-Clinical Population and causality orientations assessing in major depressions

INTRODUCTION

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Chinese version General Causality Orientation Scale-Clinical Population (GCOS-CP) and assessed the causality orientations in patients with major depression disorders (MDDs).

METHOD

The psychometric properties of the Chinese GCOS-CP were tested in an adults group (study 1). And then, the Chinese GCOS-CP was given to individuals with and without MDD (study 2).

RESULTS

The Chinese GCOS-CP provided good reliability and validity. MDD showed lower autonomy but higher impersonal orientations relative to healthy controls.

DISCUSSION

The GCOS-CP is suitable for the assessment of motivation in patients with mental disorders in Chinese setting.

Promoting a sense of security in everyday life-A case study of patients and professionals moving towards co-production in an atrial fibrillation "learning café"

BACKGROUND

An improvement initiative sought to improve care for atrial fibrillation (AF) patients; many felt insecure about how to cope with AF.

OBJECTIVE

To reveal AF patients' and professionals' experiences of pilot-testing a Learning Café group education programme, aimed at increasing the patients' sense of security in everyday life.

DESIGN

Using an organizational case study design, we combined quantitative data (patients' sense of security) and qualitative data (project documentation; focus group interviews with five patients and five professionals) analysed using inductive qualitative content analysis.

SETTING

AF patients and a multiprofessional team at a cardiac care unit in a Swedish district hospital.

IMPROVEMENT ACTIVITIES

Two registered nurses invited AF patients and partners to four 2.5-hour Learning Café sessions. In the first session, they solicited participants' questions about life with AF. A physician, a registered nurse and a physiotherapist were invited to address these questions in the remaining sessions.

RESULTS

AF patients reported gaining a greater sense of security in everyday life and anticipating a future shift from emergency care to planned care. Professionals reported enhanced professional development, learning more about person-centredness and gaining greater control of their own work situation. The organization gained knowledge about patient and family involvement.

CONCLUSIONS

The Learning Café pilot test-exemplifying movement towards co-production through patient-professional collaboration-generated positive outcomes for patients (sense of security), professionals (work satisfaction; learning) and the organization (better care) in line with contemporary models for quality improvement and with Self-Determination Theory. This approach merits further testing and evaluation in other contexts.

Explicit Mental Health Messaging Promotes Serious Video Game Selection in Youth With Elevated Mental Health Symptoms

Serious games aimed at promoting well-being in youth have promising effects and potential for far-reaching impact. Considering that most mental health disorders remain untreated in youth, therapeutic games may be most valuable when they are aimed at untreated youth with internalizing symptoms. However, when targeting youth outside of a clinical setting, the first impression of therapeutic video games may determine whether and how a game is played. Thus, understanding the influence of messaging used in the promotion of therapeutic games on game choice and experience is critical. The current study examined two alternatives in promoting mental health games: one included explicit mental health messaging (e.g., learn to manage stress) and the other was a stealth promotion that did not mention mental health but highlighted the entertainment value. Young adults with mild to severe internalizing mental health symptoms (i.e., depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms) were shown two distinct trailer designs, with random assignment determining which design held which message. Participants (n = 129, M_age = 21.33, SD_age = 3.20), unaware that both trailers promoted the same commercial video game, were 3.71 times more likely to choose what they believed was the mental health game. Additionally, an unforeseen difference in the attractiveness of the two trailer designs resulted in participants being 5.65 times more likely to select the mental health game promoted in one trailer design over the other. Messaging did not influence game experience (i.e., gameplay duration, autonomy, competence, intrinsic motivation and affect). Exploratory analyses indicated that game experience, but not game choice, was influenced by symptom severity, symptom type and the interaction between symptom severity and messaging. The present study suggests that explicit mental health messages attract youth with mental health symptoms. Ultimately, youth may be empowered to seek out mental health games if they are promoted properly, allowing for far-reaching positive influences on well-being. Toward this aim, future research is needed on the game selection process, addressing underlying motivations, the balance between explicit health and entertainment messaging, and multiple interacting influences on game selection (e.g., promotion and peers).

Mapping patterns of change in emotion-focused psychotherapy: Implications for theory, research, practice, and training

An important objective in humanistic-experiential psychotherapies and particularly emotion-focused psychotherapy (EFT) is to map patterns of change. Effective mapping of the processes and pathways of change requires that in-session processes be linked to in-session resolutions, immediate post-session changes, intermediate outcome, final therapy outcome, and longer-term change. This is a challenging and long-term endeavour. Fine-grained descriptions of in-session processes that lead to resolution of specific interpersonal and intrapersonal issues linked with longer-term outcomes are the foundation of EFT, the process-experiential approach. In this paper, evidence in support of EFT as a treatment approach will be reviewed along with research on two mechanisms of change, viewed as central to EFT, clients' emotional processing and the therapeutic relationship conditions. The implications for psychotherapy research are discussed. Given the methodological constraints, there is a need for more innovative methodologies and strategies to investigate specific psychotherapy processes within and across different approaches to map patterns and mechanisms of change to enhance theory, research, practice, and training.
