Photon-stimulated desorption as a substantial source of sodium in the lunar atmosphere

Lunar soil record of atmosphere loss over eons

The Moon has a tenuous atmosphere produced by space weathering. The short-lived nature of the atoms surrounding the Moon necessitates continuous replenishment from lunar regolith through mechanisms such as micrometeorite impacts, ion sputtering, and photon-stimulated desorption. Despite advances, previous remote sensing and space mission data have not conclusively disentangled the contributions of these processes. Using high-precision potassium (K) and rubidium (Rb) isotopic analyses of lunar soils from the Apollo missions, our study sheds light on the lunar surface-atmosphere evolution over billions of years. The observed correlation between K and Rb isotopic ratios (δ 87Rb = 0.17 δ 41K) indicates that, over long timescales, micrometeorite impact vaporization is the primary source of atoms in the lunar atmosphere.

KAGUYA observation of global emissions of indigenous carbon ions from the Moon

Carbon is a volatile element that has a considerable influence on the formation and evolution of planetary bodies, although it was previously believed to be depleted in the Moon. We present observations by the lunar orbiter KAGUYA of carbon ions emitted from the Moon. These emissions were distributed over almost the total lunar surface, but amounts were differed with respect to lunar geographical areas. The estimated emission fluxes to space were ~5.0 × 104 per square centimeter per second, which is greater than possible ongoing supplies from the solar wind and micrometeoroids. Our estimates demonstrate that indigenous carbon exists over the entire Moon, supporting the hypothesis of a carbon-containing Moon, where the carbon was embedded at its formation and/or was transported billions of years ago.

Atomic dispensers for thermoplasmonic control of alkali vapor pressure in quantum optical applications

Alkali metal vapors enable access to single electron systems, suitable for demonstrating fundamental light-matter interactions and promising for quantum logic operations, storage and sensing. However, progress is hampered by the need for robust and repeatable control over the atomic vapor density and over the associated optical depth. Until now, a moderate improvement of the optical depth was attainable through bulk heating or laser desorption – both time-consuming techniques. Here, we use plasmonic nanoparticles to convert light into localized thermal energy and to achieve optical depths in warm vapors, corresponding to a ~16 times increase in vapor pressure in less than 20 ms, with possible reload times much shorter than an hour. Our results enable robust and compact light-matter devices, such as efficient quantum memories and photon-photon logic gates, in which strong optical nonlinearities are crucial.

Robust and fast control of the atomic vapor pressure in alkali vapor cells would greatly extend their use for many quantum technologies. Here, the authors exploit plasmonic absorption in a cell coating containing gold nanoparticles to control the vapor pressure with milliseconds response time.

Photochemical reflective optical fiber sensor for selective detection of phenol in aqueous solutions

A photochemical fiber-optic sensor was developed by integrating a plastic optical fiber (POF), polymer membrane, gold mirror, and TiO₂-based composite, and was shown to sensitively and selectively detect phenol in aqueous solution. The sensing element consisted of a thinned POF and visible-light-driven SiO₂/N-doped TiO₂ coating. The gold mirror was used to develop a reflective POF probe. The polymer membrane with high phenol permselectivity was employed to form a micro-channel between the membrane and probe. Our findings highlight the sensor's capability of phenol detection in aqueous solutions with high sensitivity of 0.294×10^-3  (mg·L^-1)^-1, pH immunity ranging from 2.0 to 14.0, and high selectivity with a limit of detection of 30  μg·L^-1.

Enhanced Atomic Desorption of 209 and 210 Francium from Organic Coating

Controlled atomic desorption from organic Poly-DiMethylSiloxane coating is demonstrated for improving the loading efficiency of ^209,210Fr magneto-optical traps. A three times increase in the cold atoms population is obtained with contact-less pulsed light-induced desorption, applied to different isotopes, either bosonic or fermionic, of Francium. A six times increase of ²¹⁰Fr population is obtained with a desorption mechanism based on direct charge transfer from a triboelectric probe to the adatom-organic coating complex. Our findings provide new insight on the microscopic mechanisms of atomic desorption from organic coatings. Our results, obtained at room temperature so as to preserve ideal vacuum conditions, represent concrete alternatives, independent from the atomic species in use, for high-efficiency laser cooling in critical conditions.

A Cold-Pole Enhancement in Mercury's Sodium Exosphere

The Ultraviolet and Visible Spectrometer (UVVS) component of the Mercury Atmospheric and Surface Composition Spectrometer (MASCS) on the MESSENGER spacecraft characterized the local-time distribution of the sodium exosphere over the course of its orbital mission. The observations show that the sodium exosphere is enhanced above Mercury's cold-pole longitudes. Based on previously published sodium exosphere models we infer that these regions act as nightside surface reservoirs, temporary sinks to the exosphere that collect sodium atoms transported anti-sunward. The reservoirs are revealed as exospheric enhancements when they are exposed to sunlight. As in the models the reservoir is depleted as the cold poles rotate from dawn to dusk, but unlike the models the depletion is only partial. The persistence of the reservoir means that it could, over the course of geologically long periods of time, contribute to an increase in the bulk concentration of sodium near the cold-pole longitudes.

Calibrating thermal and scanning tunnelling microscope induced desorption and diffusion for the chemisorbed chlorobenzene/Si(111)7 × 7 system

The precise calibration of thermally driven processes in scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) manipulation experiments, especially at room temperature and above, is necessary to uncover an accurate picture of non-thermal dynamical processes such as desorption induced by electronic transitions, driven by the STM current. Here we probe the displacement (the sum of desorption and diffusion) of chlorobenzene molecules chemisorbed on the Si(111)-7 × 7 surface, induced both by the STM electrical current and by heat. We also establish truly passive imaging inspection parameters. The activation energy for pure thermal displacement is 580 ± 20 meV, possibly associated with excitation to a physisorbed precursor state. STM induced displacement shows a marked decrease with increasing temperature, once the thermal effects are removed.

Electron-Induced Oxygen Desorption from the TiO2(011)-2x1 Surface Leads to Self-Organized Vacancies

When low-energy electrons strike a titanium dioxide surface, they may cause the desorption of surface oxygen. Oxygen vacancies that result from irradiating a TiO2(011)-2x1 surface with electrons with an energy of 300 electron volts were analyzed by scanning tunneling microscopy. The cross section for desorbing oxygen from the pristine surface was found to be 9 (+/-6) x 10(-17) square centimeters, which means that the initial electronic excitation was converted into atomic motion with a probability near unity. Once an O vacancy had formed, the desorption cross sections for its nearest and next-nearest oxygen neighbors were reduced by factors of 100 and 10, respectively. This site-specific desorption probability resulted in one-dimensional arrays of oxygen vacancies.

Reversible light-controlled formation and evaporation of rubidium clusters in nanoporous silica

We observe reversible light assisted formation and evaporation of rubidium clusters embedded in nanoporous silica. Metallic nanoparticles are cyclically produced and evaporated by weak blue-green and near-infrared light, respectively. The atoms photodetached from the huge surface of the silica matrix build up clusters, whereas cluster evaporation is increased by induced surface plasmon excitation. Frequency tuning of light activates either one process or the other and the related changes of glass transparency become visible to the naked eye. We demonstrate that the porous silica, loaded with rubidium, shows memory of illumination sequences behaving as a rereadable and rewritable optical medium. These processes take place as a consequence of the strong confinement of atoms and particles at the nanoscale.

Surface femtochemistry: observation and quantum control of frustrated desorption of alkali atoms from noble metals

This review presents a case study of the direct, real-time observation of a surface photochemical reaction, namely the frustrated photodesorption of alkali atoms from noble metal surfaces. Charge transfer excitation of an electron from the metal substrate into an unoccupied resonance of the alkali atom instantaneously turns on the repulsive Coulomb force inducing the nuclear motion of both the adsorbate and substrate atoms. The incipient nuclear wave packet dynamics are documented for the case of Cs/Cu(111) through the accompanying change in the surface electronic structure. The intimate view of atoms attempting to escape the surface bond highlights the unique role of the substrate in the electronic and nuclear dynamics that ultimately determine the product yields. Moreover, slow dephasing of the coherent polarization is exploited to demonstrate the control of nuclear wave packets through the phase of the excitation light.

Role of excitons in electron- and photon-stimulated desorption of neutrals from alkali halides

Low-energy (5-15 eV) electron- and photon-stimulated desorption of KI(100) yields I2P3/2 and 2P1/2 with hyperthermal (0.3 eV) and thermal velocity components. The desorption threshold for both components is 5.3 eV and is correlated with the gamma3/2-exciton long-wavelength edge. Exciton decay at the surface directly produces I2P3/2 and 2P1/2 with hyperthermal velocity and is in competition with self-trapping. Spin memory of the gamma-exciton hole-component is also evident in the hyperthermal channel. An exciton mediated desorption mechanism is presented which is general in alkali halides.

Discovery of calcium in Mercury's atmosphere

The composition and evolutionary history of Mercury's crust are not well determined. The planet as a whole has been predicted to have a refractory, anhydrous composition: rich in Ca, Al, Mg and Fe, but poor in Na, K, OH, and S. Its atmosphere is believed to be derived in large part from the surface materials. A combination of effects that include impact vaporization (from infalling material), volatile evaporation, photon-stimulated desorption and sputtering releases material from the surface to form the atmosphere. Sodium and potassium have already been observed in Mercury's atmosphere, with abundances that require a volatile-rich crust. The sodium probably results from photon-stimulated desorption, and has a temperature of 1,500 K (ref. 10). Here we report the discovery of calcium in the atmosphere near Mercury's poles. The column density is very low and the temperature is apparently very high (12,000 K). The localized distribution and high temperature, if confirmed, suggest that the atmospheric calcium may arise from surface sputtering by ions, which enter Mercury's auroral zone. The low abundance of atmospheric Ca may indicate that the regolith is rarefied in calcium.
