Refined Spherulites of PP Induced by Supercritical N2 and Graphite Nanosheet and Foaming Performance

The isothermal crystallization properties of polypropylene/graphite nanosheet (PP/GN) nanocomposites under supercritical N₂ were systematically studied by a self-made in situ high-pressure microscope system. The results showed that the GN caused irregular lamellar crystals to form within the spherulites due to its effect on heterogeneous nucleation. It was found that the grain growth rate exhibits a decreasing and then increasing trend with the enhancement of N₂ pressure. Using the secondary nucleation model, the secondary nucleation rate for spherulites of PP/GN nanocomposites was investigated from an energy perspective. The increase in free energy introduced by the desorbed N₂ is the essential reason for the increase in the secondary nucleation rate. The results from the secondary nucleation model were consistent with those acquired through isothermal crystallization experiments, suggesting that the model can accurately predict the grain growth rate of PP/GN nanocomposites under supercritical N₂ conditions. Furthermore, these nanocomposites demonstrated good foam behavior under supercritical N₂.

Monomer-dependent secondary nucleation in amyloid formation

Secondary nucleation of monomers on the surface of an already existing aggregate that is formed from the same kind of monomers may lead to autocatalytic amplification of a self-assembly process. Such monomer-dependent secondary nucleation occurs during the crystallization of small molecules or proteins and self-assembled materials, as well as in protein self-assembly into fibrous structures. Indications of secondary nucleation may come from analyses of kinetic experiments starting from pure monomers or monomers supplemented with a low concentration of pre-formed aggregates (seeds). More firm evidence requires additional experiments, for example those employing isotope labels to distinguish new aggregates arising from the monomer from those resulting from fragmentation of the seed. In cases of amyloid formation, secondary nucleation leads to the formation of toxic oligomers, and inhibitors of secondary nucleation may serve as starting points for therapeutic developments. Secondary nucleation displays a high degree of structural specificity and may be enhanced by mutations or screening of electrostatic repulsion.

Macroscopic nucleation phenomena in continuum media with long-range interactions

Nucleation, commonly associated with discontinuous transformations between metastable and stable phases, is crucial in fields as diverse as atmospheric science and nanoscale electronics. Traditionally, it is considered a microscopic process (at most nano-meter), implying the formation of a microscopic nucleus of the stable phase. Here we show for the first time, that considering long-range interactions mediated by elastic distortions, nucleation can be a macroscopic process, with the size of the critical nucleus proportional to the total system size. This provides a new concept of "macroscopic barrier-crossing nucleation". We demonstrate the effect in molecular dynamics simulations of a model spin-crossover system with two molecular states of different sizes, causing elastic distortions.
