Young kittens can learn complex visual pattern discriminations

Social interaction, food, scent or toys? A formal assessment of domestic pet and shelter cat (Felis silvestris catus) preferences

Domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus) engage in a variety of relationships with humans and can be conditioned to engage in numerous behaviors using Pavlovian and operant methods Increasingly cat cognition research is providing evidence of their complex socio-cognitive and problem solving abilities. Nonetheless, it is still common belief that cats are not especially sociable or trainable. This disconnect may be due, in part, to a lack of knowledge of what stimuli cats prefer, and thus may be most motivated to work for. The current study investigated domestic cat preferences at the individual and population level using a free operant preference assessment. Adult cats from two populations (pet and shelter) were presented with three stimuli within each of the following four categories: human social interaction, food, toy, and scent. Proportion of time interacting with each stimulus was recorded. The single most-preferred stimulus from each of the four categories were simultaneously presented in a final session to determine each cat's most-preferred stimulus overall. Although there was clear individual variability in cat preference, social interaction with humans was the most-preferred stimulus category for the majority of cats, followed by food. This was true for cats in both the pet and shelter population. Future research can examine the use of preferred stimuli as enrichment in applied settings and assess individual cats' motivation to work for their most-preferred stimulus as a measure of reinforcer efficacy.

A Window on the Normal Development of Sensitivity to Global Form in Glass Patterns

We studied the development of sensitivity to global form in 6-year-olds, 9-year-olds, and adults ( n = 24 in each group) using Glass patterns with varying ratios of paired signal dots to noise dots. The developmental pattern was similar whether the global structure within the Glass patterns was concentric or parallel. Thresholds were equally immature for both types of pattern at 6 years of age (about twice the adult value) but were adult-like at 9 years of age. Together, the results indicate that the cortical structures involved in the processing of global form achieve functional maturity between 6 and 9 years of age. During middle childhood, the mechanisms mediating sensitivity to concentric structure develop at the same rate as those mediating sensitivity to parallel structure.

Olfactory guidance of nipple attachment and suckling in kittens of the domestic cat: Inborn and learned responses

In 60 kittens (11 litters) from free-ranging domestic cats we investigated the role of chemical cues in facilitating nipple attachment and suckling during the first month of postnatal life when kittens are totally dependent on the mother's milk. Kittens were tested both together and individually on sedated females in different reproductive states. We found (1) that newborn kittens with no suckling experience responded to the ventrum of lactating but not to the ventrum of nonlactating females with search behavior and attached to nipples within minutes; (2) that even in older kittens, nipple attachment depended on females' reproductive state, with virtually no attachments on nonreproducing females, some on pregnant females, the greatest number on early-lactating females, followed by a decline on late-lactating females; and (3) that kittens could locate their particular, most used nipple on their mother but not on a female of similar lactational age, even after eye opening. We suggest that kittens respond from birth with efficient nipple-search behavior to inborn olfactory cues on the mother's ventrum, that emission of these is under hormonal control, but that kittens also quickly learn olfactory cues specific to their own mother and to their own particular nipples.

Concentric orientation summation in human form vision

Psychophysical data demonstrate that orientation information in concentric, random-dot Glass patterns is summed linearly to extract a global form percept. Surprisingly, no such global pooling was found for Glass patterns with parallel structure. A simple neural model explains these results and agrees with recent V4 single unit physiology. As V4 provides the major input to IT, global concentric units may play an important role in analyzing complex images such as faces. In support of this possibility, deficits in the perception of concentric Glass patterns have recently been linked to prosopagnosia.

The late onset of visual texture segmentation in kittens

Texture segmentation was studied developmentally in kittens using a two-alternative forced choice jumping stand paradigm. None of 15 kittens tested solved a texture segmentation task based on orientation contrast prior to 83 days of age, despite their rapid acquisition age, despite their rapid acquisition of an analogous luminance-based image segmentation problem. However, three kittens showed rapid acquisition of the texture segmentation task when the textures were composed of non-oriented elements (dots and annuli), reaching criterion performance by 52-59 days of age. A control experiment demonstrated that kittens can discriminate between vertical and horizontal gratings comparable in line width to the oriented texture elements as early as 53 days of age. The surprisingly late appearance of orientation-based texture segmentation is considered in the context of current models of texture segmentation and is compared to recent reports of a similar finding in human infants [3,54].

Display organization and the detection of horizontal line segments

Observers searched for a horizontal line segment through displays containing varying numbers of elements differing from the target and from each other in terms of orientation. These elements were always positioned on imaginary concentric circles centered in the middle of the display. They were allocated to these positions either randomly or in such a way that their orientation was equal to that of the tangent to the circle at that position. The search for the target line appeared to proceed spatially in parallel with the latter class of displays, and serially with the former. These findings are explained and discussed within the context of the attentive-preattentive dichotomy that characterizes spatial vision.

Pattern recognition in kittens: performance on Lie patterns

Despite a vast accumulation of knowledge about the anatomy and physiology of the cat's visual system in recent years, and about its early development, there has been very little experimental study of the development of visual behaviour in this species. This is especially true of the kitten's ability to recognize patterns. Two experiments are reported that aim to remedy some part of this deficiency, and that also serves to examine a particular hypothesis about the basis of pattern analysis in the young organism. This is Hoffman's hypothesis that the orbits of elementary Lie transformation groups (a species of continuous transformation group) represent the basis for coding pattern information.
