Orientation-Dependent Order-Disorder Transition of Block Copolymer Lamellae in Electric Fields

Electric fields have been shown to stabilize the disordered phase of near-critical block copolymer solutions. Here, we use in situ synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering to examine how the initial orientation of lamellar domains with respect to the external field (φ) affects the shift in the order-disorder transition temperature (T_ODT) of lyotropic solutions of poly(styrene-b-isoprene) in toluene. We find a downward shift of the transition temperature, which scales with lamellar orientation as ΔT_ODT ∼ cos² φ, in accordance with theory.

Probing the stability of magnetically assembled DNA-linked colloidal chains

The self-assembly of colloidal particles using DNA linker molecules has led to novel colloidal materials. This article describes the development and characterization of a new class of colloidal structures based on the directed assembly of DNA-linked paramagnetic particles. A key obstacle to assembling these structures is understanding the fundamental chemistry and physics of the assembly processes. The stability of these cross-linked chain structures is the first step toward reliable assembly and thus important for its applications; however, chain stability has yet to be systematically studied. In this paper, we investigate both theoretically and experimentally, the stability of DNA-linked paramagnetic colloidal chains as a function of externally applied magnetic field strength and surface grafted DNA length and density. A total interparticle free energy potential model is developed accounting for all major forces contributing to chain stability, and a phase diagram is obtained from experiments to illustrate linked chain phases, unstable unlinked particle phases, and their transitions, which agree well with those predicted by the model. From this study, optimized parameters for successful linking and building stable linked chains are obtained.

Harnessing biological motors to engineer systems for nanoscale transport and assembly

Living systems use biological nanomotors to build life's essential molecules--such as DNA and proteins--as well as to transport cargo inside cells with both spatial and temporal precision. Each motor is highly specialized and carries out a distinct function within the cell. Some have even evolved sophisticated mechanisms to ensure quality control during nanomanufacturing processes, whether to correct errors in biosynthesis or to detect and permit the repair of damaged transport highways. In general, these nanomotors consume chemical energy in order to undergo a series of shape changes that let them interact sequentially with other molecules. Here we review some of the many tasks that biomotors perform and analyse their underlying design principles from an engineering perspective. We also discuss experiments and strategies to integrate biomotors into synthetic environments for applications such as sensing, transport and assembly.

Composition deviation of arrays of FePt nanoparticles starting from poly(styrene)-poly(4-vinylpyridine) micelles

Ordered arrays of FePt nanoparticles were prepared using a diblock polymer micellar method combined with plasma treatment. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy analyses reveal that the molar ratios of Fe to Pt in metal-salt-loaded micelles deviate from those when metal precursors are added, and that the plasma treatment processes have little influence upon the compositions of the resulting FePt nanoparticles. The results from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy show that the maximum loadings of FeCl(3) and H(2)PtCl(6) inside poly(styrene)-poly(4-vinylpyridine) micelles are different. The composition deviation of FePt nanoparticles is attributed to the fact that one FeCl(3) molecule coordinates with a single 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) unit, while two neighboring and uncomplexed 4VP units are required for one H(2)PtCl(6) molecule. Additionally, we demonstrate that the center-to-center distances of the neighboring FePt nanoparticles can also be tuned by varying the drawing velocity.

Self-assembly of DNA-coded nanoclusters

We present a theoretical discussion of a self-assembly scheme which makes it possible to use DNA to uniquely encode the composition and structure of microparticle and nanoparticle clusters. These anisotropic DNA-decorated clusters can be further used as building blocks for hierarchical self-assembly of larger structures. We address several important aspects of possible experimental implementation of the proposed scheme: the competition between different types of clusters in a solution, possible jamming in an unwanted configuration, and the degeneracy due to symmetry with respect to particle permutations.

Errorproof programmable self-assembly of DNA-nanoparticle clusters

We study theoretically a generic scheme of programmable self-assembly of nanoparticles into clusters of desired geometry. The problem is motivated by the feasibility of highly selective DNA-mediated interactions between colloidal particles. By analyzing both a simple generic model and a more realistic description of a DNA-colloidal system, we demonstrate that it is possible to suppress the glassy behavior of the system, and to make the self-assembly nearly errorproof. This regime requires a combination of stretchable interparticle linkers (e.g., sufficiently long DNA), and a soft repulsive potential. The jamming phase diagram and the error probability are computed for several types of clusters. The prospects for the experimental implementation of our scheme are also discussed.
