Self assembling cluster crystals from DNA based dendritic nanostructures

Cluster crystals are periodic structures with lattice sites occupied by several, overlapping building blocks, featuring fluctuating site occupancy, whose expectation value depends on thermodynamic conditions. Their assembly from atomic or mesoscopic units is long-sought-after, but its experimental realization still remains elusive. Here, we show the existence of well-controlled soft matter cluster crystals. We fabricate dendritic-linear-dendritic triblock composed of a thermosensitive water-soluble polymer and nanometer-scale all-DNA dendrons of the first and second generation. Conclusive small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) evidence reveals that solutions of these triblock at sufficiently high concentrations undergo a reversible phase transition from a cluster fluid to a body-centered cubic (BCC) cluster crystal with density-independent lattice spacing, through alteration of temperature. Moreover, a rich concentration-temperature phase diagram demonstrates the emergence of various ordered nanostructures, including BCC cluster crystals, birefringent cluster crystals, as well as hexagonal phases and cluster glass-like kinetically arrested states at high densities.

Intercluster Exchange-Stabilized Novel Complex Colloidal χc Phase

Designing complex cluster crystals with a specific function using simple colloidal building blocks remains a challenge in materials science. Herein, we propose a conceptually new design strategy for constructing complex cluster crystals via hierarchical self-assembly of simple soft Janus colloids. A novel and previously unreported colloidal cluster-χ (χ_c) phase, which resembles the essential structural features of α-manganese but at a larger length scale, is obtained through molecular dynamics simulations. The formation of the χ_c phase undergoes a remarkable two-step self-assembly process, that is, the self-assembly of clusters with specific size dispersity from Janus colloids, followed by the highly ordered organization of these clusters. More importantly, the dynamic exchange of particles between these clusters plays a critical role in stabilizing the χ_c phase. Such a conceptual design framework based on intercluster exchange has the potential to effectively construct novel complex cluster crystals by hierarchical self-assembly of colloidal building blocks.

Supersolid Stripe Crystal from Finite-Range Interactions on a Lattice

Strong, long-range interactions present a unique challenge for the theoretical investigation of quantum many-body lattice models, due to the generation of large numbers of competing states at low energy. Here, we investigate a class of extended bosonic Hubbard models with off-site terms interpolating between short and infinite range, thus allowing for an exact numerical solution for all interaction strengths. We predict a novel type of stripe crystal at strong coupling. Most interestingly, for intermediate interaction strengths we demonstrate that the stripes can turn superfluid, thus leading to a self-assembled array of quasi-one-dimensional superfluids. These bosonic superstripes turn into an isotropic supersolid with decreasing the interaction strength. The mechanism for stripe formation is based on cluster self-assembling in the corresponding classical ground state, reminiscent of classical soft-matter models of polymers, different from recently proposed mechanisms for cold gases of alkali or dipolar magnetic atoms.

Slow dynamics coupled with cluster formation in ultrasoft-potential glasses

We numerically investigate the slow dynamics of a binary mixture of ultrasoft particles interacting with the generalized Hertzian potential. If the softness parameter, α, is small, the particles at high densities start penetrating each other, form clusters, and eventually undergo the glass transition. We find multiple cluster-glass phases characterized by a different number of particles per cluster, whose boundary lines are sharply separated by the cluster size. Anomalous logarithmic slow relaxation of the density correlation functions is observed in the vicinity of these glass-glass phase boundaries, which hints the existence of the higher-order dynamical singularities predicted by the mode-coupling theory. Deeply in the cluster glass phases, it is found that the dynamics of a single particle is decoupled from that of the collective fluctuations.

Cluster Crystals Stabilized by Hydrophobic and Electrostatic Interactions

Cluster crystals are crystalline materials in which each site is occupied by multiple identical particles, atoms, colloids, or polymers. There are two classes of systems that make cluster crystals. One is composed of particles that interact via potentials that are bound at the origin and thus are able to penetrate each other. The other consists of non-interpenetrating particles whose interaction potential diverges at the origin. The goal of this work is to find which systems of the second class can make cluster crystals that are stable at room temperature. First, the general properties of the required potentials are established using an analytical model and Monte Carlo simulations. Next, we ask how such potentials can be constructed by combining hydrophobic attraction and electrostatic repulsion. A colloid model with a hard-sphere core and a repulsive wall is introduced to mimic the hydrophobic interaction. Charge is added to create long-range repulsion. A search in the parameter space of the colloid size, counterion type, and charge configuration uncovers several models for which effective colloid-colloid interaction, determined in explicit solvent as a potential of mean force, has the necessary shape. For the effective potential, cluster crystals are confirmed as low free-energy configurations in replica-exchange molecular dynamics simulations, which also generate the respective transition temperature. The model that exhibits a transition above room temperature is further studied in explicit solvent. Simulations on a 10 ns time scale show that crystalline conformations are stable below the target temperature but disintegrate rapidly above it, supporting the idea that hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions are sufficient to induce an assembly of cluster crystals. Finally, we discuss which physical systems are good candidates for experimental observations of cluster crystals.

Glass Transitions in Monodisperse Cluster-Forming Ensembles: Vortex Matter in Type-1.5 Superconductors

At low enough temperatures and high densities, the equilibrium configuration of an ensemble of ultrasoft particles is a self-assembled, ordered, cluster crystal. In the present Letter, we explore the out-of-equilibrium dynamics for a two-dimensional realization, which is relevant to superconducting materials with multiscale intervortex forces. We find that, for small temperatures following a quench, the suppression of the thermally activated particle hopping hinders the ordering. This results in a glass transition for a monodispersed ensemble, for which we derive a microscopic explanation in terms of an "effective polydispersity" induced by multiscale interactions. This demonstrates that a vortex glass can form in clean systems of thin films of "type-1.5" superconductors. An additional setup to study this physics can be layered superconducting systems, where the shape of the effective vortex-vortex interactions can be engineered.

Cluster Glass Transition of Ultrasoft-Potential Fluids at High Density

Using molecular dynamics simulation, we investigate the slow dynamics of a supercooled binary mixture of soft particles interacting with a generalized Hertzian potential. At low density, it displays typical slow dynamics near its glass transition temperature. At higher densities, particles bond together, forming clusters, and the clusters undergo the glass transition. The number of particles in a cluster increases one by one as the density increases. We demonstrate that there exist multiple cluster-glass phases characterized by a different number of particles per cluster, each of which is separated by distinct minima. Surprisingly, a so-called higher order singularity of the mode-coupling theory signaled by a logarithmic relaxation is observed in the vicinity of the boundaries between monomer and cluster glass phases. The system also exhibits rich and anomalous dynamics in the cluster glass phases, such as the decoupling of the self- and collective dynamics.

Anisotropic effective interactions and stack formation in mixtures of semiflexible ring polymers

By means of extensive computer simulations, we investigate the formation of columnar structures (stacks) in concentrated solutions of semiflexible ring polymers. To characterize the stacks we employ an algorithm that identifies tube-like structures in the simulation cell. Stacks are found both in the real system and in the fluid of soft disks interacting through the effective anisotropic pair potential derived for the rings [P. Poier et al., Macromolecules, 2015, 48, 4983-4997]. Furthermore, we investigate binary mixtures of cluster-forming and non-cluster-forming rings. We find that monodispersity is not a requirement for stack formation. The latter is found for a broad range of mixture compositions, though the columns in the mixtures exhibit important differences to those observed in the monodisperse case. We extend the anisotropic effective model to mixtures. We show that it correctly predicts stack formation and constitutes a significant improvement with respect to the usual isotropic effective description based only on macromolecular centers-of-mass.

Superglass Phase of Interaction-Blockaded Gases on a Triangular Lattice

We investigate the quantum phases of monodispersed bosonic gases confined to a triangular lattice and interacting via a class of soft-shoulder potentials. The latter correspond to soft-core potentials with an additional hard-core onsite interaction. Using exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the low temperature phases for weak and strong interactions following a temperature quench are a homogeneous superfluid and a glass, respectively. The latter is an insulating phase characterized by inhomogeneity in the density distribution and structural disorder. Remarkably, we find that for intermediate interaction strengths a superglass occurs in an extended region of the phase diagram, where glassy behavior coexists with a sizable finite superfluid fraction. This glass phase is obtained in the absence of geometrical frustration or external disorder and is a result of the competition of quantum fluctuations and cluster formation in the corresponding classical ground state. For high enough temperature, the glass and superglass turn into a floating stripe solid and a supersolid, respectively. Given the simplicity and generality of the model, these phases should be directly relevant for state-of-the-art experiments with Rydberg-dressed atoms in optical lattices.

Monodisperse cluster crystals: Classical and quantum dynamics

We study the phases and dynamics of a gas of monodisperse particles interacting via soft-core potentials in two spatial dimensions, which is of interest for soft-matter colloidal systems and quantum atomic gases. Using exact theoretical methods, we demonstrate that the equilibrium low-temperature classical phase simultaneously breaks continuous translational symmetry and dynamic space-time homogeneity, whose absence is usually associated with out-of-equilibrium glassy phenomena. This results in an exotic self-assembled cluster crystal with coexisting liquidlike long-time dynamical properties, which corresponds to a classical analog of supersolid behavior. We demonstrate that the effects of quantum fluctuations and bosonic statistics on cluster-glassy crystals are separate and competing: Zero-point motion tends to destabilize crystalline order, which can be restored by bosonic statistics.

An Anisotropic Effective Model for the Simulation of Semiflexible Ring Polymers

We derive and introduce anisotropic effective pair potentials to coarse-grain solutions of semiflexible ring polymers of various lengths. The system has been recently investigated by means of full monomer-resolved computer simulations, revealing a host of unusual features and structure formation, which, however, cannot be captured by a rotationally averaged effective pair potential between the rings' centers of mass [Bernabei M.; Soft Matter2013, 9, 1287]. Our new coarse-graining strategy is to picture each ring as a soft, penetrable disk. We demonstrate that for the short- and intermediate-length rings the new model is quite capable of capturing the physics in a quantitative fashion, whereas for the largest rings, which resemble flexible ones, it fails at high densities. Our work opens the way for the physical justification of general, anisotropic penetrable interaction potentials.

Single-file and normal diffusion of magnetic colloids in modulated channels

Diffusive properties of interacting magnetic dipoles confined in a parabolic narrow channel and in the presence of a periodic modulated (corrugated) potential along the unconfined direction are studied using Brownian dynamics simulations. We compare our simulation results with the analytical result for the effective diffusion coefficient of a single particle by Festa and d'Agliano [Physica A 90, 229 (1978)] and show the importance of interparticle interaction on the diffusion process. We present results for the diffusion of magnetic dipoles as a function of linear density, strength of the periodic modulation and commensurability factor.
