The inhibitory properties of group A and B non-secretor saliva

The existence of some form of specifically active A or B blood group substance in the saliva of group A1, A2 and B non-secretors was demonstrated. Significant inhibition of agglutination results were obtained when the salivas of these non-secretors were examined in a test procedure using anti-A + B (group O) serum and group AX red cells. Native saliva specimens from group A1, A2 and B secretors and non-secretors were filtered on Sephadex G-200 columns. The eluates were tested for blood group activity by inhibition of agglutination and for relative carbohydrate and protein content. A main excluded glycoprotein, blood group-active fraction was detected in all samples of saliva examined.

Distribution of H antigen in persons of blood groups A, B, and AB

The distribution of H antigen in tissues of persons of blood groups A, B, and AB was examined. H antigen could be demonstrated in all tissues in which the isologous antigens A and B were demonstrated, although some cells demonstrated isologous but not H antigen. In most tissues, areas were seen that demonstrated H antigen but not the isologous antigen. This was especially true in Brunner's glands of the duodenum and esophageal glands, where the amount of H antigen was apparently greater than the amount of the isologous antigen. Since the results varied greatly from tissue to tissue, it was not possible to interpret the data with respect to the biochemical pathways of blood group antigen formation.

The origin of serum protein, A, B, and H blood group, and Gm and Inv antigens in house dust

Materials precipitated from an aqueous extract of house dust by saturation with ammonium sulphate showed immunological reaction with antisera to human serum albumin, human alpha1-acid glycoprotein, human IgG, Gm and Inv antigens and to A, B and H antigens. It is concluded that the albumin and alpha1-acid glycoprotein are of human origin. It seems that the apparent IgG activity is due to cross-reactivity since, from the anticipated specificities of the Fab and Fc fragments of human IgG, the former could not be detected, and since Gm (6) activity was present, unexpectedly, in Swiss house dust. The A, B and H blood group antigenic activities were detected in relative concentration different from those expected if they were solely of human origin. It is concluded that they are from both human and non-human sources.

Saliva flow, protein concentration, and blood group substance concentration in the whole saliva of 106 persons were compared. Some of these variables then were compared with age, decayed surfaces, DMF surfaces, and immunoglobulin concentration (IgA and IgG).
