Strong exchange and magnetic blocking in N23−-radical-bridged lanthanide complexes

Spin-State Control in Dysprosium(III) Metallacrown Magnets via Thioacetal Modification

Integrating controllable spin states into single-molecule magnets (SMMs) enables precise manipulation of magnetic interactions at a molecular level, but remains a synthetic challenge. Herein, we developed a 3d-4f metallacrown (MC) magnet [DyNi5(quinha)5(Clsal)2(py)8](ClO4) ⋅ 4H2O (H2quinha=quinaldichydroxamic acid, HClsal=5-chlorosalicylaldehyde) wherein a square planar NiII is stabilized by chemical stacking. Thioacetal modification was employed via post-synthetic ligand substitutions and yielded [DyNi5(quinha)5(Clsaldt)2(py)8](ClO4) ⋅ 3H2O (HClsaldt=4-chloro-2-(1,3-dithiolan-2-yl)phenol). Thanks to the additional ligations of thioacetal onto the NiII site, coordination-induced spin state switching (CISSS) took place with spin state altering from low-spin S=0 to high-spin S=1. The synergy of CISSS effect and magnetic interactions results in distinct energy splitting and magnetic dynamics. Magnetic studies indicate prominent enhancement of reversal barrier from 57 cm-1 to 423 cm-1, along with hysteresis opening and an over 200-fold increment in coercive field at 2 K. Ab initio calculations provide deeper insights into the exchange models and rationalize the relaxation/tunnelling pathways. These results demonstrate here provide a fire-new perspective in modulating the magnetization relaxation via the incorporation of controllable spin states and magnetic interactions facilitated by the CISSS approach.

Magnetic behaviour of a spin-canted asymmetric lanthanide quinolate trimer

An asymmetrical dysprosium trimer with a molecular formula of [Dy3(hq)7(hqH)(NO3)2(H2O)] was obtained through a reflux reaction employing as starting material Dy(NO3)3·nH2O and 8-quinolinoline as ligand. Magnetic susceptibility investigations show the system to be an SMM, which was corroborated by sub-Kelvin μSQUID studies. Upon cooling, the magnetic susceptibility also exhibits a decrease in the χMT product, which was confirmed to be due to intramolecular antiferromagnetic interactions. μSQUID measurements, moreover, reveal a marked magnetic behaviour in the angular dependence of the hysteresis loops. The latter is a direct consequence of the non-colinear spin arrangement of the anisotropy axes of each Dy(III) ion in [Dy3(hq)7(hqH)(NO3)2(H2O)] and the interaction between the ions, as also evidenced by CASSCF calculations. Our results evidence the effect of spin canting along with the intramolecular interactions, which can induce non-trivial magnetic behaviour in SMMs.

Record Quantum Tunneling Time in an Air-Stable Exchange-Bias Dysprosium Macrocycle

In recent years, dysprosium macrocycle single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have received increasing attention due to their excellent air/thermal stability, strong magnetic anisotropy, and rigid molecular skeleton. However, they usually display fast zero-field quantum tunneling of the magnetization (QTM) rate, severely hindering their data storage applications. Herein, we report the design, synthesis, and characterization of an air-stable monodecker didysprosium macrocycle integrating strong single-ion anisotropy, near-perfect local crystal field (CF) symmetry, and efficient exchange bias. These indispensable features enable clear-cut elucidation of the crucial role of very weak antiferromagnetic coupling on magnetization dynamics, creating a prominent SMM with a large effective energy barrier (Ueff) of 670 cm-1, open hysteresis loops at zero field up to 14.9 K, and a record relaxation time of QTM (τQTM), 24281 s, for all known nonradical-bridged lanthanide SMMs.

Spin dynamics phenomena of a cerium(III) double-decker complex induced by intramolecular electron transfer

Switchable spin dynamic properties in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) via an applied stimulus have applications in single-molecule devices. Many SMMs containing heavy lanthanoid ions with strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy have been reported to exhibit SMM characteristics in the absence of an external magnetic field. On the other hand, SMMs containing light lanthanoid cerium(III) (Ce3+) ions exhibit field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. We investigated the chemical conversion of a diamagnetic Ce4+ ion (4f0) to a paramagnetic Ce3+ ion (4f1) in Ce-phthalocyaninato double-decker complexes (TBA+[Ce(obPc)2]- (1) and TBA+[Ce(Pc)2]- (2)) which exhibit field-induced SMM behaviour due to a 4f1 system. The phthalocyaninato ligands with electron-donating substituents (obPc2- = 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octabutoxyphthalocyaninato) in 1 have a significant effect on the valence state of the Ce ion, which is reflected in its magnetic properties due to the mixed valence state of the Ce ion. Given that Ce double-decker complexes with π-conjugated ligands undergo intramolecular electron transfer (IET) to the Ce ion mixed valence state, characterised by a mixture of 4f0 and 4f1 configurations, we examined the dynamic disorder inherent in IET influencing magnetic relaxation.

Monomethylation and -protonation of Lutetium Dinitrogen Complex

Due to the highly chemically inert nature, direct activation and transformation of dinitrogen are challenging. Here, we disclose the synthesis, isolation, and derivatization of (N2)3- supported by lutetium complex. Initially, a (N2)3- radical, in [{(C5Me5){MeC(NiPr)2}Lu}2(μ2-η2:η2-N2)][K(crypt)] (crypt = 2,2,2-cryptand) complex, was generated through the reduction of neutral lutetium dinitrogen complex [{(C5Me5){MeC(NiPr)2}Lu}2(μ2-η2:η2-N2)] with potassium metal. Subsequently, the reaction of (N2)3- complex with methyl triflate (or triflic acid) led to the formation of an N-C (or N-H) bond, yielding the corresponding [{(C5Me5){MeC(NiPr)2}Lu}2(NN-R)(OTf)][K(crypt)] (R = Me, H, OTf = CF3SO3) as the product. Both electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and density functional theory analyses support the radical character of the NN-Me unit. The Lu-N bonds in the (NN-Me)•2- radical complex are predominantly ionic, with 77% of the unpaired electron localized on the (NN-Me) fragment. Moreover, the geometry of the pure organic radical (NN-Me)•2-, optimized by double-hybrid density functional theory, closely matches that of the (NN-Me)•2- lutetium complex.

Short Didysprosium Covalent Bond Enables High Magnetization Blocking Temperature of a Direct 4f-4f Coupled Dinuclear Single-Molecule Magnet

Coupling two magnetic anisotropic lanthanide ions via a direct covalent bond is an effective way to realize high magnetization blocking temperature of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) by suppressing quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM), whereas so far only single-electron lanthanide-lanthanide bonds with relatively large bond distances are stabilized in which coupling between lanthanide and the single electron dominates over weak direct 4f-4f coupling. Herein, we report for the first time synthesis of short Dy(II)-Dy(II) single bond (3.61 Å) confined inside a carbon cage in the form of an endohedral metallofullerene Dy2@C82. Such a direct Dy(II)-Dy(II) covalent bond renders a strong Dy-Dy antiferromagnetic coupling that effectively quenches QTM at zero magnetic field, thus opening up magnetic hysteresis up to 25 K using a field sweep rate of 25 Oe/s, concomitant with a high 100 s magnetization blocking temperature (TB,100s) of 27.2 K.

Precursor molecules for 1,2-diamidobenzene containing cobalt(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II) complexes - synthesis and magnetic properties

Molecular magnetic materials based on 1,2-diamidobenzenes are well known and have been intensively studied both experimentally and computationally. They possess interesting magnetic properties as well as redox activity. In this work, we present the synthesis and investigation of potent synthons for constructing discrete metal-organic architectures featuring 1,2-diamidobenzene-coordinated metal centres. The synthons feature weakly bound dimethoxyethane (dme) ligands in addition to the 1,2-diamidobenzene. We characterize these complexes and investigate their magnetic properties by means of static and dynamic magnetometry and high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR). Interestingly, the magnetic and magnetic resonance data strongly suggest a dimeric formulation of these complexes, viz. [MII(bmsab)(dme)]2 (bmsab = 1,2-bis(methanesulfonamido)benzene; dme = dimethoxyethane) with M = Co, Ni, Zn. A large negative D-value of -60 cm-1 was found for the Co(II) synthon and an equally large negative D of -50 cm-1 for the Ni(II) synthon. For Co(II), the sign of the D-value is the same as that found for the known bis-diamidobenzene complexes of this ion. In contrast, the negative D-value for the Ni(II) complex is unexpected, which we explain in terms of a change in coordination number. The heteroleptic Co(II) complex presented here does not feature slow relaxation of the magnetization, in contrast to the homoleptic Co(II) 1,2-diamidobenzene complex.

Dinuclear ytterbium(III) benzamidinate complexes with bridging S32-, Se22- and Te22- ligands: synthesis, structure and magnetic properties

Treatment of Yb(II) complex [L2Yb(THF)2] (L = PhC(NSiMe3)2) with elemental sulfur, selenium or tellurium resulted in the isolation of a series of dinuclear Yb(III) complexes featuring side-on bound S32- (1), Se22- (2) or Te22- (3) moieties, respectively. Magnetic study on these complexes revealed that 3 is a rare lanthanide telluride single-molecule magnet (SMM).

Magneto-structural correlation in lanthanide luminescent [2.2]paracyclophane-based single-molecule magnets

The association of lanthanide ions and paracyclophane derivatives has been very scarcely reported in the literature. In this study, elaboration of five coordination lanthanide complexes involving the 1,4(1,4)-dibenzenacyclohexaphane-12,43-diylbis(diphenylphosphine oxide) ligand (L) was achieved with the determination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction structures of four mononuclear complexes of formula [Ln(hfac)3(L)] (hfac- = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate) (Ln = Dy(III) (1-Dy) and Yb(III) (2-Yb)) and [Ln(tta)3(L)] (tta- = 2-tenoyl-trifluoroacetylacetonate) (Ln = Dy(III) (3-Dy) and Yb(III) (4-Yb)) and one dinuclear complex [Na(Dy2(hfac)6(L)2)](BArF) (BArF- = tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate) (5-Dy). The compounds were characterized using elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, DC and AC magnetic measurements and photophysical investigations. L is an efficient organic chromophore for the sensitization of both visible Dy(III) (1-Dy) and near-infrared Yb(III) (2-Yb and 4-Yb) luminescence. The combination of excitation and emission spectra allowed the determination of the crystal field spitting of both the 2F7/2 ground state and 2F5/2 excited state for 2-Yb and 4-Yb. Moreover, 3-Dy and the two Yb(III) derivatives displayed field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour with slow magnetic relaxation occurring through the Raman process only for 2-Yb and 4-Yb, whereas a combination of Orbach and Raman processes was identified for 3-Dy.

Iron promoted end-on dinitrogen-bridging in heterobimetallic complexes of uranium and lanthanides

End-on binding of dinitrogen to low valent metal centres is common in transition metal chemistry but remains extremely rare in f-elements chemistry. In particular, heterobimetallic end-on N2 bridged complexes of lanthanides are unprecedented despite their potential relevance in catalytic reduction of dinitrogen. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of N2 bridged heterobimetallic complexes of U(iii), Ln(iii) and Ln(ii) which were prepared by reacting the Fe dinitrogen complex [Fe(depe)2(N2)] (depe = 1,2-bis(diethylphosphino)-ethane), complex A with [MIII{N(SiMe3)2}3] (M = U, Ce, Sm, Dy, Tm) and [LnII{N(SiMe3)2}2], (Ln = Sm, Yb). Despite the lack of reactivity of the U(iii), Ln(iii) and Ln(ii) amide complexes with dinitrogen, the end-on dinitrogen bridged heterobimetallic complexes [{Fe(depe)2}(μ-η1:η1-N2)(M{N(SiMe3)2}3)], 1-M (M = U(iii), Ce(iii), Sm(iii), Dy(iii) and Tm(iii)), [{Fe(depe)2}(μ-η1:η1-N2)(Ln{N(SiMe3)2}2)], 1*-Ln (Ln = Sm(ii), Yb(ii)) and [{Fe(depe)2(μ-η1:η1-N2)}2{SmII{N(SiMe3)2}2}], 3 could be prepared. The synthetic method used here allowed to isolate unprecedented end-on bridging N2 complexes of divalent lanthanides which provide relevant structural models for the species involved in the catalytic reduction of dinitrogen by Fe/Sm(ii) systems. Computational studies showed an essentially electrostatic interaction of the end-on bridging N2 with both Ln(iii) and Ln(ii) complexes with the degree of N2 activation correlating with their Lewis acidity. In contrast, a back-bonding covalent contribution to the U(iii)-N2Fe bond was identified by computational studies. Computational studies also suggest that end-on binding of N2 to U(iii) and Ln(ii) complexes is favoured for the iron-bound N2 compared to free N2 due to the higher N2 polarization.

Ab initio-based determination of lanthanoid-radical exchange as visualised by inelastic neutron scattering

Magnetic exchange coupling can modulate the slow magnetic relaxation in single-molecule magnets. Despite this, elucidation of exchange coupling remains a significant challenge for the lanthanoid(iii) ions, both experimentally and computationally. In this work, the crystal field splitting and 4f-π exchange coupling in the erbium-semiquinonate complex [ErTp2dbsq] (Er-dbsq; Tp- = hydro-tris(1-pyrazolyl)borate, dbsqH2 = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-semiquinone) have been determined by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), magnetometry, and CASSCF-SO ab initio calculations. A related complex with a diamagnetic ligand, [ErTp2trop] (Er-trop; tropH = tropolone), has been used as a model for the crystal field splitting in the absence of coupling. Magnetic and INS data indicate antiferromagnetic exchange for Er-dbsq with a coupling constant of Jex = -0.23 meV (-1.8 cm-1) (-2Jex formalism) and good agreement is found between theory and experiment, with the low energy magnetic and spectroscopic properties well modelled. Most notable is the ability of the ab initio modelling to reproduce the signature of interference between localised 4f states and delocalised π-radical states that is evident in the Q-dependence of the exchange excitation. This work highlights the power of combining INS with EPR and magnetometry for determination of ground state properties, as well as the enhanced capability of CASSCF-SO ab initio calculations and purposely developed ab initio-based theoretical models. We deliver an unprecedentedly detailed representation of the entangled character of 4f-π exchange states, which is obtained via an accurate image of the spin-orbital transition density between the 4f-π exchange coupled wavefunctions.

Endohedral metallofullerene molecular nanomagnets

Magnetic lanthanide (Ln) metal complexes exhibiting magnetic bistability can behave as molecular nanomagnets, also known as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), suitable for storing magnetic information at the molecular level, thus attracting extensive interest in the quest for high-density information storage and quantum information technologies. Upon encapsulating Ln ion(s) into fullerene cages, endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) have been proven as a promising and versatile platform to realize chemically robust SMMs, in which the magnetic properties are able to be readily tailored by altering the configurations of the encapsulated species and the host cages. In this review, we present critical discussions on the molecular structures and magnetic characterizations of EMF-SMMs, with the focus on their peculiar molecular and electronic structures and on the intriguing molecular magnetism arising from such structural uniqueness. In this context, different families of magnetic EMFs are summarized, including mononuclear EMF-SMMs wherein single-ion anisotropy is decisive, dinuclear clusterfullerenes whose magnetism is governed by intramolecular magnetic interaction, and radical-bridged dimetallic EMFs with high-spin ground states that arise from the strong ferromagnetic coupling. We then discuss how molecular assemblies of SMMs can be constructed, in a way that the original SMM behavior is either retained or altered in a controlled manner, thanks to the chemical robustness of EMFs. Finally, on the basis of understanding the structure-magnetic property correlation, we propose design strategies for high-performance EMF-SMMs by engineering ligand fields, electronic structures, magnetic interactions, and molecular vibrations that can couple to the spin states.

A Multiconfigurational Wave Function Theoretical Study on Electronic Structure and Magnetic Susceptibility of Dilanthanide Single Molecule Magnet

Single molecule magnets (SMMs) have been a promising material for next-generation high-density information storage and molecular spintronics. N23--bridged dilanthanide complexes, {[(Me3Si)2N]2Ln(THF)(μ-η2:η2-N2)(THF)Ln[(Me3Si)2N]2}1-, exhibit high blocking temperatures and have been one of the promising candidates for future application. Rational understanding should be established between the magnetic properties and electronic structure. However, the theoretical study is still challenging due to the complexities in their electronic structures. Here, we theoretically studied the magnetic susceptibility of dilanthanide SMMs based on the state-of-the-art multistate-complete active space self-consistent field and perturbation theory at the second order and restricted active space state interaction with spin-orbit coupling calculations. Temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility (χmT-T curve) was quantitatively reproduced by the theoretical calculations. The complexities in the electronic states of these dilanthanide complexes originate from significantly strong static electron correlations in the lanthanide 4f and N2 π* orbitals and the SOC effect. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility results from the energy levels and magnetic properties of the low-lying excited state. The χmT values below 50 K are dominated by the ground state, while thermal distribution in the low-lying excited state affects the χmT values over 50 K. Saturation magnetization at low temperatures was also evaluated, and the result agrees with the experimental observation.

Increasing the Magnetic Blocking Temperature of Single-Molecule Magnets

The synthesis of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), magnetic complexes capable of retaining magnetization blocking for a long time at elevated temperatures, has been a major concern for magnetochemists over the last three decades. In this review, we describe basic SMMs and the different approaches that allow high magnetization-blocking temperatures to be reached. We focus on the basic factors affecting magnetization blocking, magnetic axiality and the height of the blocking barrier, which can be used to group different families of complexes in terms of their SMM efficiency. Finally, we discuss several practical routes for the design of mono- and polynuclear complexes that could be applied in memory devices.

A DFT perspective on organometallic lanthanide chemistry

Computational studies of the coordination chemistry and bonding of lanthanides have grown in recent decades as the need for understanding the distinct physical, optical, and magnetic properties of these compounds increased. Density functional theory (DFT) methods offer a favorable balance of computational cost and accuracy in lanthanide chemistry and have helped to advance the discovery of novel oxidation states and electronic configurations. This Frontier article examines the scope and limitations of DFT in interpreting structural and spectroscopic data of low-valent lanthanide complexes, elucidating periodic trends, and predicting their properties and reactivity, presented through selected examples.

Multimetallic Uranium Nitride Cubane Clusters from Dinitrogen Cleavage

Dinitrogen cleavage provides an attractive but poorly studied route to the assembly of multimetallic nitride clusters. Here, we show that the monoelectron reduction of the dinitrogen complex [{U(OC6H2-But3-2,4,6)3}2(μ-η2:η2-N2)], 1, allows us to generate, for the first time, a uranium complex presenting a rare triply reduced N2 moiety ((μ-η2:η2-N2)•3-). Importantly, the bound dinitrogen can be further reduced, affording the U4N4 cubane cluster, 3, and the U6N6 edge-shared cubane cluster, 4, thus showing that (N2)•3- can be an intermediate in nitride formation. The tetranitride cluster showed high reactivity with electrophiles, yielding ammonia quantitatively upon acid addition and promoting CO cleavage to yield quantitative conversion of nitride into cyanide. These results show that dinitrogen reduction provides a versatile route for the assembly of large highly reactive nitride clusters, with U6N6 providing the first example of a molecular nitride of any metal formed from a complete cleavage of three N2 molecules.

Double-stranded metallo-triangles: from anion-templated nonanuclear to cation-templated tetraicosanuclear dysprosium clusters

Two double-stranded metallo-triangles, Dy9 and Dy24, with hexaple-C10H7PO32- bridges were constructed, and their magnetic properties were explored. Compared with the field-induced relaxation phenomenon of Dy9 templated with a chloride anion, Dy24 templated with a sodium cation exhibited zero-field single-molecule-magnet behavior.

Zero-Field SMM Behavior Triggered by Magnetic Exchange Interactions and a Collinear Arrangement of Local Anisotropy Axes in a Linear Co3II Complex

A new linear trinuclear Co(II)3 complex with a formula of [{Co(μ-L)}2Co] has been prepared by self-assembly of Co(II) ions and the N3O3-tripodal Schiff base ligand H3L, which is obtained from the condensation of 1,1,1-tris(aminomethyl)ethane and salicylaldehyde. Single X-ray diffraction shows that this compound is centrosymmetric with triple-phenolate bridging groups connecting neighboring Co(II) ions, leading to a paddle-wheel-like structure with a pseudo-C3 axis lying in the Co-Co-Co direction. The Co(II) ions at both ends of the Co(II)3 molecule exhibit distorted trigonal prismatic CoN3O3 geometry, whereas the Co(II) at the middle presents an elongated trigonal antiprismatic CoO6 geometry. The combined analysis of the magnetic data and theoretical calculations reveal strong easy-axis magnetic anisotropy for both types of Co(II) ions (|D| values higher than 115 cm-1) with the local anisotropic axes lying on the pseudo-C3 axis of the molecule. The magnetic exchange interaction between the middle and ends Co(II) ions, extracted by using either a Hamiltonian accounting for the isotropic magnetic coupling and ZFS or the Lines' model, was found to be medium to strong and antiferromagnetic in nature, whereas the interaction between the external Co(II) ions is weak antiferromagnetic. Interestingly, the compound exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization and open hysteresis at zero field and therefore SMM behavior. The significant magnetic exchange coupling found for [{Co(μ-L)}2Co] is mainly responsible for the quenching of QTM, which combined with the easy-axis local anisotropy of the CoII ions and the collinearity of their local anisotropy axes with the pseudo-C3 axis favors the observation of SMM behavior at zero field.

Peripheral site modification in a family of dinuclear [Dy2(hynad)2-6(NO3)0-6(sol)0-2]0/2- single-molecule magnets bearing a {Dy2(μ-OR)2}4+ diamond-shaped core and exhibiting dissimilar magnetic dynamics

The first use of the organic chelate N-hydroxy-1,8-naphthalimide (hynadH) in DyIII chemistry has unveiled access to a synthetic 'playground' composed of four new dinuclear complexes, all of which possess the same planar {Dy2(μ-OR)2}4+ diamond-shaped core, resulting from the bridging and chelating capacity of the hynad- groups. The structural stability of the central {Dy2} core has allowed for the modulation of the peripheral coordination sites of the metal ions, and specifically the NO3-/hynad- ratio of capping groups, thus affording the compounds [Dy2(hynad)2(NO3)4(DMF)2] (1), (Me4N)2[Dy2(hynad)2(NO3)6] (2), [Dy2(hynad)4(NO3)2(H2O)2] (3), and [Dy2(hynad)6(H2O)2] (4). Because of the chemical and structural modifications in the series 1-4, the DyIII coordination polyhedra are also dissimilar, comprising the muffin (1 and 3), tetradecahedral (2), and spherical tricapped trigonal prismatic (4) geometries. Complexes 1, 2, and 4 exhibit a ferromagnetic response at low temperatures, while 3 is antiferromagnetically coupled. All compounds exhibit out-of-phase (χ''M) ac signals as a function of ac frequency and temperature, thus behaving as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), in the absence or presence of applied dc fields. Interestingly, the hynad--rich and nitrato-free complex 4, demonstrates the largest energy barrier (Ueff = 69.62(1) K) for the magnetization reversal which is attributed to the presence of the two axial triangular faces of the spherical tricapped trigonal prism by the negatively charged O-atoms of the hynad- ligands.

Targeted Synthesis of End-On Dinitrogen-Bridged Lanthanide Metallocenes and Their Reactivity as Divalent Synthons

High-yield syntheses of the lanthanide dinitrogen complexes [(Cp2tttM)2(μ-1,2-N2)] (1M, M = Gd, Tb, Dy; Cpttt = 1,2,4-C5tBu3H2), in which the [N2]2- ligands solely adopt the rare end-on or 1,2-bridging mode, are reported. The bulk of the tert-butyl substituents and the smaller radii of gadolinium, terbium, and dysprosium preclude formation of the side-on dinitrogen bonding mode on steric grounds. Elongation of the nitrogen-nitrogen bond relative to N2 is observed in 1M, and their Raman spectra show a major absorption consistent with N═N double bonds. Computational analysis of 1Gd identifies that the local symmetry of the metallocene units lifts the degeneracy of two 5dπ orbitals, leading to differing overlap with the π* orbitals of [N2]2-, a consequence of which is that the dinitrogen ligand occupies a singlet ground state. Magnetic measurements reveal antiferromagnetic exchange in 1M and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior in 1Dy. Ab initio calculations show that the magnetic easy axis in the ground doublets of 1Tb and 1Dy align with the {M-N═N-M} connectivity, in contrast to the usual scenario in dysprosium metallocene SMMs, where the axis passes through the cyclopentadienyl ligands. The [N2]2- ligands in 1M allow these compounds to be regarded as two-electron reducing agents, serving as synthons for divalent gadolinium, terbium, and dysprosium. Proof of principle for this concept is obtained in the reactions of 1M with 2,2'-bipyridyl (bipy) to give [Cp2tttM(κ2-bipy)] (2M, M = Gd, Tb, Dy), in which the lanthanide is ligated by a bipy radical anion, with strong metal-ligand direct exchange coupling.

Single-Molecule Magnet Properties in 3d4f Heterobimetallic Iron and Dysprosium Complexes Involving Hydrazone Ligand

The reaction between the ((E)-N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)pyrazine-2-carbohydrazide) (H2opch) ligand and the metallo-precursor [Dy(hfac)3]·2H2O led to the formation of an homometallic coordination complex with the formula [Dy2(hfac)3(H2O)(Hopch)2][Dy(hfac)4] (1). In presence of both [Dy(hfac)3] 2H2O and the Fe(II) salt, the heterobimetallic tetranuclear [FeDy3(hfac)8(H2O)2(opch)2] (2) was isolated, while the addition of the co-ligand 1,2-Bis(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene) hydrazine (H2bmh) led to the formation of two heterobimetallic tetranuclear complexes with the formula [Fe3Dy(hfac)6(opch)2(H2bmh)] C6H14 (3) C6H14 and [Fe2Dy2(hfac)7(opch)2(H2bmh)] 0.5C7H16 (4) 0.5C7H16. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and dc magnetic investigation demonstrated that 3 and 4 involved the iron center in the +II and +III oxidation states. Dynamic magnetic measurements highlighted the single-molecule magnet behavior of 1 and 2 in a zero applied dc field primarily due to the ferromagnetic interactions taking place in these compounds.

Regulating Magnetic Relaxations of Cyano-Bridged {DyIII MoV } Systems by Tuning the N-Sites in β-Diketone Ligands

Cyano-bridged 4d-4f molecular nanomagnets have re-called increasing research interests in molecular magnetism since they offer more possibilities in achieving novel nanomagnets with versatile structures and magnetic interactions. In this work, four β-diketone ligands bearing different substitution N-sites were designed and synthesized, namely 1-(2-pyridyl)-3-(3-pyridyl)-1,3-propanedione (HL1 ), 1,3-Bis (3-pyridyl)-1,3-propanedione (HL2 ), 1-(4-pyridyl)-3-(3-pyridyl)-1,3-propanedione (HL3 ), and 1,3-Bis (4-pyridyl)-1,3-propanedione (HL4 ), to tune the magnetic relaxation behaviors of cyano-bridged {DyIII MoV } systems. By reacting with DyCl3  ⋅ 6H2 O and K4 Mo(CN)8  ⋅ 2H2 O, four cyano-bridged complexes, namely {[Dy[MoV (CN)8 ](HL1 )2 (H2 O)3 ]} ⋅ 6H2 O (1), {[Dy[MoV (CN)8 ](HL2 )(H2 O)3 (CH3 OH)]}2  ⋅ 2CH3 OH ⋅ 3H2 O (2), {[Dy[MoV (CN)8 ](HL3 )(H2 O)2 (CH3 OH)] ⋅ H2 O}n (3), and {[Dy[MoV (CN)8 ](HL4 )2 (H2 O)3 ]} ⋅ 2H2 O⋅CH3 OH (4) were obtained. Structural analyses revealed that 1 and 4 are binuclear complexes, 2 has a tetragonal structure, and 3 exhibits a stair-like polymer chain structure. The DyIII ions in all complexes have eight-coordinated configurations with the coordination spheres DyO7 N1 for 1 and 4, DyO6 N2 for 2, and DyO5 N3 for 3. Magnetic measurements indicate that 1 is a zero-field single-molecule magnet (SMM) and complexes 2-4 are field-induced SMMs, with complex 4 featuring a two-step relaxation process. The magnetic characterizations and ab initio calculations revealed that changing the N-sites in the β-diketone ligands can effectively alter the structures and magnetic properties of cyano-bridged 4d-4f nanomagnets by adjusting the coordination environments of the DyIII centers.

Synthesis, structures and magnetic studies of hexanuclear lanthanide complexes: SMM behavior of the DyIII analogue and MCE properties of the GdIII analogue

The synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of homometallic hexanuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln6(HL)4(tfa)4(S)2]·2NO3·x H2O·yMeOH (1, Ln = Gd, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 0; 2, Ln = Tb, S = H2O, x = 2, y = 2; 3, Ln = Dy, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 2; 4, Ln = Er, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 2). [(H4L) = 6-((bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)picolinohydrazide) (tfa = trifloroacetylacetone)] are reported. These hexanuclear assemblies are made up of two trinuclear triangular sub-units linked through the oxygen atoms of two phenoxide bridging groups in a corner sharing arrangement. Magnetic studies reveal that 1 displays a magnetocaloric effect with a maximum value of -ΔSm = 21.03 J kg-1 K-1 at T = 3 K and under an applied field change ΔB = 5 T. Complex 3 shows slow relaxation of magnetization even under zero applied field although a clear maximum in the ac susceptibility plots cannot be seen. However, under an optimal applied field of 0.2 T, clear maxima are observed in the out-of-phase (χ''M) component of the ac susceptibility in the temperature range 3.5 K (2 kHz) to 10.5 K (10 kHz). The temperature dependence of the relaxation times could be fitted to the sum of Orbach, Raman and QTM relaxation processes affording the following parameters: τo = 3.4(9) × 10-8 s, Ueff = 94(2) K, BRaman = 16.43(1) K-n s-1, n = 3.2(3) and τQTM = 0.0044(3) s. 4, under an applied magnetic field of 0.2 T, shows slow relaxation of magnetization through a thermally activated Orbach process with Ueff = 18.2(9) K and τo = 3.5(3) × 10-8 s.

Syntheses and magnetic properties of a bis-bidentate nitronyl nitroxide radical based on triazolopyrimidine and its metal complexes

A novel bis-bidentate nitronyl nitroxide radical based on triazolopyrimidine, NIT-2-TrzPm (NIT-2-TrzPm = (2-(2'-triazolopyrimidine)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-1-oxy-3-oxide)) and six new transition metal complexes of this ligand, namely [M(hfac)₂(NIT-2-TrzPm)]·CH₂Cl₂ (M = Mn (1Mn) and Co (2Co)), [M(hfac)₂]₂(NIT-2-TrzPm) (M = Mn (3Mn) and Co (4Co)), [Mn(NIT-2-TrzPm)₂(MeOH)₂](ClO₄)₂·MeOH (5Mn), and [Co(NIT-2-TrzPm)₂(MeOH)₂]₂(ClO₄)₄·4MeOH (6Co) were prepared and characterized structurally and magnetically. These complexes can be selectively synthesized by controlling the reaction ratio of M(hfac)₂·2H₂O to the radical ligand (for 1Mn to 4Co) or using metal perchlorates as the starting materials (for 5Mn and 6Co). Single crystal X-ray crystallographic analyses confirmed that 1Mn and 2Co are isostructural 3d-2p M^II-radical complexes, in which the NIT-2-TrzPm radical acts as a terminal bidentate ligand chelating to one 3d ion, while 3Mn and 4Co are isostructural 3d-2p-3d M^II-radical-M^II complexes with the NIT-2-TrzPm radical acting as a bridging ligand between two 3d ions. For complexes 5Mn and 6Co, two NIT-2-TrzPm ligands from the equatorial positions coordinate with the metal center to form the 2p-3d-2p structures with the axial positions occupied by two methanol molecules. Magnetic analysis on the Mn^II complexes revealed the existence of a strong antiferromagnetic interaction between the Mn^II and the NIT radical spin, while weak ferromagnetic coupling for Mn⋯Mn and Rad⋯Rad in the Mn-NIT-Mn and Rad-Mn-Rad spins was confirmed. Interestingly, although the NIT-bridged complexes 3Mn and 4Co possess significantly different magnetic anisotropy, field-induced slow magnetic relaxation can be observed in both complexes, which was assigned to the phonon bottleneck effect for 3Mn and field-induced SMM behavior for 4Co. To the best of our knowledge, 3Mn is the first example of the NIT-bridged binuclear Mn^II complex undergoing slow magnetic relaxation.

Insight into the Ligand-to-Ligand Charge-Transfer Process in Rare-Earth-Metal Diradical Complexes

While a ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LLCT) process is an important way to understand the interactions between metal-bridged radicals for late-transition-metal complexes, there is little clear and evident observation of the LLCT process for rare-earth-metal complexes. In this work, rare-earth-metal diradical complexes supported by diazabutadiene (DAD) ligands [(DAD)₂RE(BH₄)] [RE = Yb (1), Sm (2)] were synthesized and studied. The coordination geometries of 1 and 2 are different due to the different ionic radii. Reduction of 1 or 2 generated monoradical complexes, with one of their DAD radical anions being reduced. In all of the complexes, Sm and Yb remain at the 3+ valence state. In their UV-vis spectra, the LLCT transition of 1 could be clearly observed, but complex 2 did not show the same transition. These results could be related to the geometric structures of the complexes as well as exchange coupling between diradicals, thus clearly expanding the model for late-transition-metal-bridged diradicals to rare-earth systems experimentally.

Recent Progress for Single-Molecule Magnets Based on Rare Earth Elements

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have attracted much attention due to their potential applications in molecular spintronic devices. Rare earth SMMs are considered to be the most promising for application owing to their large magnetic moment and strong magnetic anisotropy. In this review, the recent progress in rare earth SMMs represented by mononuclear and dinuclear complexes is highlighted, especially for the modulation of magnetic anisotropy, effective energy barrier (U_eff) and blocking temperature (T_B). The terbium- and dysprosium-based SMMs have a U_eff of 1541 cm^-1 and an increased T_B of 80 K. They break the boiling point temperature of liquid nitrogen. The development of the preparation technology of rare earth element SMMs is also summarized in an overview. This review has important implications and insights for the design and research of Ln-SMMs.

Lanthanide-radical single-molecule magnets: current status and future challenges

In the field of molecular magnetism, the lanthanide-radical (Ln-Rad) method has become one of the most appealing tactics for introducing strong magnetic interactions and has spurred on the booming development of heterospin single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The article is a timely retrospect on the research progress of Ln-Rad heterospin systems and special attention is invested on low dimensional Ln-Rad compounds with SMM behavior, primarily concerning with nitrogen-based radicals, semiquinone and nitroxide radicals. Rational design, molecular structures, magnetic behaviors and magneto-structural correlations are highlighted. Meanwhile, particular attention is focused on the influence of exchange couplings on the dynamic magnetic properties, with the purpose of helping to guide the design of prospective radical-based Ln-SMMs.

Tuning symmetry and magnetic blocking of an exchange-coupled lanthanide ion in isomeric, tetrametallic complexes: [LnCl6(TiCp2)3]

The synthesis and magnetic properties of two pairs of isomeric, exchange-coupled complexes, [LnCl₆(TiCp₂)₃] (Ln = Gd, Tb), are reported. In each isomeric pair, the central lanthanide ion adopts either a pseudo-octahedral (O-Ln) or trigonal prismatic geometry (TP-Ln) yielding complexes with C ₁ or C _3h molecular symmetry, respectively. Ferromagnetic exchange coupling is observed in TP-Ln as indicated by the increases in χ _m T below 30 K. For TP-Gd, a fit to the susceptibility reveals ferromagnetic coupling between the Gd³⁺ ion and the Ti³⁺ ions (J = 2.90(1) cm^-1). In contrast to O-Tb, which shows no single-molecule magnetic behavior, the TP-Tb complex presents slow magnetic relaxation with a 100s-blocking temperature of 2.3 K and remanent magnetization at zero field up to 3 K. The calculated electronic structures of both compounds imply that trigonal prismatic geometry of TP-Tb is critical to the observed magnetic behavior.

Taming Super-Reduced Bi23- Radicals with Rare Earth Cations

Here, we report the synthesis of two new sets of dibismuth-bridged rare earth molecules. The first series contains a bridging diamagnetic Bi₂^2- anion, (Cp*₂RE)₂(μ-η²:η²-Bi₂), 1-RE (where Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; RE = Gd (1-Gd), Tb (1-Tb), Dy (1-Dy), Y (1-Y)), while the second series comprises the first Bi₂^3- radical-containing complexes for any d- or f-block metal ions, [K(crypt-222)][(Cp*₂RE)₂(μ-η²:η²-Bi₂^•)]·2THF (2-RE, RE = Gd (2-Gd), Tb (2-Tb), Dy (2-Dy), Y (2-Y); crypt-222 = 2.2.2-cryptand), which were obtained from one-electron reduction of 1-RE with KC₈. The Bi₂^3- radical-bridged terbium and dysprosium congeners, 2-Tb and 2-Dy, are single-molecule magnets with magnetic hysteresis. We investigate the nature of the unprecedented lanthanide-bismuth and bismuth-bismuth bonding and their roles in magnetic communication between paramagnetic metal centers, through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible/near-infrared (UV-vis/NIR) spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, DFT and multiconfigurational ab initio calculations. We find a π_z^* ground SOMO for Bi₂^3-, which has isotropic spin-spin exchange coupling with neighboring metal ions of ca. -20 cm^-1; however, the exchange coupling is strongly augmented by orbitally dependent terms in the anisotropic cases of 2-Tb and 2-Dy. As the first examples of p-block radicals beneath the second row bridging any metal ions, these studies have important ramifications for single-molecule magnetism, main group element, rare earth metal, and coordination chemistry at large.

Strategies to quench quantum tunneling of magnetization in lanthanide single molecule magnets

Enhancing blocking temperature (T_B) is one of the holy grails in Single Molecule Magnets(SMMs), as any future potential application in this class of molecules is directly correlated to this parameter. Among many factors contributing to a reduction of T_B value, Quantum Tunnelling of Magnetisation (QTM), a phenomenon that is a curse or a blessing based on the application sought after, tops the list. Theoretical tools based on density functional and ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO methods have played a prominent role in estimating various spin Hamiltonian parameters and establishing the mechanism of magnetization relaxation in this class of molecules. Particularly, various strategies to quench QTM effects go hand-in-hand with experiments, and different methods proposed to quell QTM effects are scattered in the literature. In this perspective, we have explored various approaches that are proposed in the literature to quench QTM effects, and these include the role of (i) local symmetry of lanthanides, (ii) super-exchange interaction in {3d-4f} complexes, (iii) direct-exchange interaction in {radical-4f} and metal-metal bonded complexes to suppress the QTM, (iv) utilizing external stimuli such as an electric field or pressure to modulate the QTM and (v) avoiding QTM effects by stabilising toroidal states in 4f and {3d-4f} clusters. We believe the strategies summarized here will help to design new-generation SMMs.

Radical-Bridged Heterometallic Single-Molecule Magnets Incorporating Four Lanthanoceniums

The syntheses and magnetic properties of organometallic heterometallic compounds [K(THF)₆ ]{Co^I [(μ₃ -HAN)RE₂ Cp*₄ ]₂ } (1-RE) and [K(Crypt)]₂ {Co^I [(μ₃ -HAN)RE₂ Cp*₄ ]₂ } (2-RE) containing hexaazatrinaphthylene radicals (HAN⋅^3- ) and four rare earth (RE) ions are reported. 1-RE shows isolable species with ligand-based mixed valency as revealed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) thus leading to the isolation of 2-RE via one-electron chemical reduction. Strong electronic communication in mixed-valency supports stronger overall ferromagnetic behaviors in 2-RE than 1-RE containing Gd and Dy ions. Ac magnetic susceptibility data reveal 1-Dy and 2-Dy both exhibit slow magnetic relaxation. Importantly, larger coercive field was observed in the hysteresis of 2-Dy at 2.0 K, indicating the enhanced SMM behavior compared with 1-Dy. Ligand-based mixed-valency strategy has been used for the first time to improve the magnetic coupling in lanthanide (Ln) SMMs, thus opening up new ways to construct strongly coupled Ln-SMMs.

Lanthanide Single-molecule Magnets: Synthetic Strategy, Structures, Properties and Recent Advances

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) show wide potential applications in the field of ultrahigh-density storage materials, quantum computing, spintronics, and so on. Lanthanide (Ln) SMMs, as an important category of SMMs, open up a promising prospect due to their large magnetic moments and huge magnetic anisotropy. However, the construction of high performance for Ln SMMs remains an enormous challenge. Although remarkable advances are focused on the topic of Ln SMMs, the research on Ln SMMs with different nuclear numbers is still deficient. Therefore, this review summarizes the design strategies for the construction of Ln SMMs, as well as the metal skeleton types. Furthermore, we collect reported Ln SMMs with mononuclearity, dinuclearity, and multinuclearity (three or more Ln spin centers) and the SMM properties including energy barrier (U_eff ) and pre-exponential factor (τ₀ ) are described. Finally, Ln SMMs with low-nuclearity SMMs, especially for single-ion magnets (SIMs), are highlighted to understand the correlations between structures and magnetic behavior of the detail SMM properties are described. We expect the review can shed light on the future developments of high-performance Ln SMMs.

Back to the future of organolanthanide chemistry

At the dawn of the development of structural organometallic chemistry, soon after the discovery of ferrocene, the description of the LnCp₃ complexes, featuring large and mostly trivalent lanthanide ions, was rather original and sparked curiosity. Yet, the interest in these new architectures rapidly dwindled due to the electrostatic nature of the bonding between π-aromatic ligands and 4f-elements. Almost 70 years later, it is interesting to focus on how the discipline has evolved in various directions with the reports of multiple catalytic reactivities, remarkable potential in small molecule activation, and the development of rich redox chemistry. Aside from chemical reactivity, a better understanding of their singular electronic nature - not precisely as simplistic as anticipated - has been crucial for developing tailored compounds with adapted magnetic anisotropy or high fluorescence properties that have witnessed significant popularity in recent years. Future developments shall greatly benefit from the detailed reactivity, structural and physical chemistry studies, particularly in photochemistry, electro- or photoelectrocatalysis of inert small molecules, and manipulating the spins' coherence in quantum technology.

Pentagonal-bipyramidal 4d and 5d complexes with unquenched orbital angular momentum as a unique platform for advanced single-molecule magnets: current state and perspectives

This article overviews the current state and prospects of the concept of advanced single-molecule magnets (SMMs) based on low-spin (S = 1/2) pentagonal-bipyramidal (PBP) 4d³ and 5d³ complexes with unquenched orbital angular momentum. This approach is based on the unique property of PBP 4d³ and 5d³ complexes to cause highly anisotropic spin coupling of perfect uniaxial symmetry, -J_zSziSzj - J_xy(SxiSxj + SyiSyj), regardless of the local geometric symmetry. The M(4d/5d)-M(3d) exchange-coupled pairs in the apical positions of the PBP complexes produce Ising-type exchange interactions (|J_z| > |J_xy|), which serve as a powerful source of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of a SMM cluster. In polynuclear heterometallic 4d/5d-3d complexes embodying PBP 4d/5d units and high-spin 3d ions, anisotropic Ising-type exchange interactions produce a double-well potential with high energy barriers U_eff, which is controlled by the anisotropic exchange parameters J_z, J_xy. Theoretical analysis shows that the barrier is proportional to the difference |J_z - J_xy| and to the number n of the apical 4d/5d-3d pairs in a SMM cluster, U_eff ∝ |J_z - J_xy|n, which provides an opportunity to scale up the barrier U_eff and blocking temperature T_B up to the record values. A novel family of 4d/5d complexes with forced PBP coordination provided by structurally rigid planar pentadentate Schiff-base ligands in the equatorial plane is discussed as a better alternative to the cyanometallates. The possibility of a significant increase in the anisotropic exchange parameters J_z, J_xy in PBP complexes with monoatomic apical μ-bridging ligands is examined. The basic principles of molecular engineering the highest barrier through anisotropic exchange interactions of PBP 4d/5d complexes are formulated. The theoretical and experimental results taken together indicate that the concept of high-performance SMMs based on 4d/5d PBP complexes with unquenched orbital angular momentum is an attractive alternative to the currently dominant lanthanide-based SMM strategy.

Ag(II) as Spin Super-Polarizer in Molecular Spin Clusters

Using quantum mechanical calculations, we examine magnetic (super)exchange interactions in hypothetical, chemically reasonable molecular coordination clusters containing fluoride-bridged late transition metals or selected lanthanides, as well as Ag(II). By referencing to analogous species comprising closed-shell Cd(II), we provide theoretical evidence that the presence of Ag(II) may modify the magnetic properties of such systems (including metal-metal superexchange) to a surprising degree, specifically both coupling sign and strength may markedly change. Remarkably, this happens in spite of the fact that the fluoride ligand is the least susceptible to spin polarization among all monoatomic ligands known in chemistry. In an extreme case of an oxo-bridged Ni(II)₂ complex, the presence of Ag(II) leads to a nearly 17-fold increase of magnetic superexchange and switching from antiferro (AFM)- to ferromagnetic (FM) coupling. Ag(II)─with one hole in its d shell that may be shared with or transferred to ligands─effectively acts as spin super-polarizer, and this feature could be exploited in spintronics and diverse molecular devices.

Unraveling the Contributions to Spin-Lattice Relaxation in Kramers Single-Molecule Magnets

The study of how spin interacts with lattice vibrations and relaxes to equilibrium provides unique insights into its chemical environment and the relation between electronic structure and molecular composition. Despite its importance for several disciplines, ranging from magnetic resonance to quantum technologies, a convincing interpretation of spin dynamics in crystals of magnetic molecules is still lacking due to the challenging experimental determination of the correct spin relaxation mechanism. We apply ab initio spin dynamics to a series of 12 coordination complexes of Co²⁺ and Dy³⁺ ions selected among ∼240 compounds that largely cover the literature on single-molecule magnets and well represent different regimes of spin relaxation. Simulations reveal that the Orbach spin relaxation rate of known compounds mostly depends on the ions' zero-field splitting and little on the details of molecular vibrations. Raman relaxation is instead found to be also significantly affected by the features of low-energy phonons. These results provide a complete understanding of the factors limiting spin lifetime in single-molecule magnets and revisit years of experimental investigations by making it possible to transparently distinguish Orbach and Raman relaxation mechanisms.

A single-ion magnet building block strategy toward Dy2 single-molecule magnets with enhanced magnetic performance

A molecular dysprosium(III) complex [Dy(DClQ)₃(H₂O)₂] (1) was used as a building unit for the construction of lanthanide SMMs, leading to the isolation of two dinuclear Dy(III) complexes, namely [Dy₂(DClQ)₆(MeOH)₂] (2) and [Dy₂(DClQ)₆(bpmo)₂]·6MeCN (3) (DClQ = 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline, bpmo = 4,4'-dipyridine-oxide). Structural analyses revealed the same N₃O₅ coordination environment of the Dy(III) centers with a distorted biaugmented trigonal prism (C_2V symmetry) and triangular dodecahedron (D_2d symmetry) for 2 and 3, respectively. Magnetic studies revealed the presence of ferromagnetic and weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the Dy³⁺ centers in 2 and 3, respectively. Interestingly, slow relaxation of magnetization at zero fields was evidenced with an U_eff of 51.4 K and 159.0 K for complexes 2 and 3, respectively. The detailed analysis of relaxation dynamics discloses that the Orbach process is dominant for 2 whereas Raman and QTM play an important role in 3. Theoretical calculations were carried out to provide insight into the magnetic exchange interactions and relaxation dynamics for the complexes. Due to a single-ion magnet (SIM) of 1, the foregoing results demonstrate a SIM modular synthetic route for the preparation of dinuclear lanthanide SMMs.

Computational design of magnetic molecules and their environment using quantum chemistry, machine learning and multiscale simulations

Having served as a playground for fundamental studies on the physics of d and f electrons for almost a century, magnetic molecules are now becoming increasingly important for technological applications, such as magnetic resonance, data storage, spintronics and quantum information. All of these applications require the preservation and control of spins in time, an ability hampered by the interaction with the environment, namely with other spins, conduction electrons, molecular vibrations and electromagnetic fields. Thus, the design of a novel magnetic molecule with tailored properties is a formidable task, which does not only concern its electronic structures but also calls for a deep understanding of the interaction among all the degrees of freedom at play. This Review describes how state-of-the-art ab initio computational methods, combined with data-driven approaches to materials modelling, can be integrated into a fully multiscale strategy capable of defining design rules for magnetic molecules.

Syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of the lanthanide complexes of imidazole-substituted nitronyl nitroxide biradicals

Two new bis-bidentate imidazole-substituted nitronyl nitroxide biradicals, BNITIm-C2 (BNITIm-C2 = 1,1'-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis(1H-imidazole-2-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-1-oxy-3-oxide)) and BNITIm-C4 (BNITIm-C4 = 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(1H-imidazole-2-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-1-oxy-3-oxide)), and two series of lanthanide complexes, namely [(BNITIm-C2)Ln(NO₃)₃](MeOH) (Ln = Gd (1Gd) and Tb (2Tb)), (BNITIm-C2)Dy(NO₃)₃ (3Dy) and (BNITIm-C4)[Ln(hfac)₃]₂(C₇H₈)₂ (Ln = Gd (4Gd), Tb (5Tb) and Dy (6Dy), hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate), have been prepared and characterized structurally and magnetically. Single crystal X-ray crystallographic analyses revealed that complexes 1Gd-3Dy exhibit 1D chain structures where the Ln(NO₃)₃ units are bridged by the BNITIm-C2 bis-bidentate biradical, while complexes 4Gd-6Dy exhibit binuclear structures with two Ln(hfac)₃ units bridged by the BNITIm-C4 biradical. The bulky hfac anions prohibit the further coordination of Ln^III to another NIT ligand and the formation of a similar 1D chain structure. Due to the very long intra- and intermolecular distances of the spin centers, complexes 1Gd-3Dy can be magnetically regarded as an isolated 2p-4f-2p tri-spin system while complex 4Gd-6Dy can be regarded as an isolated 2p-4f bi-spin system. Magnetic analyses on the two Gd^III compounds revealed the ferromagnetic Gd^III-NIT interactions and antiferromagnetic NIT-NIT interactions through the Gd^III ion in 1Gd. Alternating-current (ac) magnetic susceptibility investigations revealed that complex 5Tb exhibits the typical SMM behavior under a zero dc field while complex 6Dy was proved to be a field-induced SMM. Ab initio calculations were performed on complexes 2Tb and 5Tb to understand their magnetic anisotropy together with their different magnetic dynamics.

Synthesis, Structure, and Zero-Field SMM Behavior of Homometallic Dy2, Dy4, and Dy6 Complexes

The synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of three Dy^III complexes of different nuclearity, [Dy₂(H₂L)₂(NO₃)] [NO₃]·2H₂O·CH₃OH (1), [Dy₄(HL)₂(piv)₄(OH)₂] (2), and [Dy₆(H₂L)₃(μ₃-OH)(μ₃-CO₃)₃(CH₃OH)₄(H₂O)₈] 5Cl·3H₂O (3) [(H₄L) = 6-((bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)picolinohydrazide)], are described. This variety of complexes with the same ligand could be obtained by playing with the metal-to-ligand molar ratio, the type of Dy^III salt, the kind of base, and the presence/absence of coligand. 1 is a dinuclear complex, while 2 is a tetranuclear assembly with a butterfly-shaped topology. 3 is a homometallic hexanuclear complex that exhibits a propeller-shaped topology. Interestingly, in this complex 3, three atmospheric carbon dioxide molecules are trapped in the form of carbonate ions, which assist in holding the hexanuclear complex together. All of the complexes reveal a slow relaxation of magnetization even in zero applied field. Complex 1 is a zero-field SMM with an effective energy barrier (U_eff) of magnetization reversal equal to 87(1) K and a relaxation time of τ₀ = 6.4(3) × 10^-9 s. Under an applied magnetic field of 0.1 T, these parameters change to U_eff = 101(3) K, τ₀ = 2.5(1) × 10^-9 s. Complex 2 shows zero-field SMM behavior with U_eff = 31(2) K, τ₀ = 4.2(1) × 10^-7 s or τ₀₁ = 2(1) × 10^-7 s, U_eff1 = 37(8) K, τ₀₂ = 5(6) × 10^-5 s, and U_eff2 = 8(4) by considering two Orbach relaxation processes, while 3, also a zero-field SMM, shows a double relaxation of magnetization [U_eff1 = 62.4(3) K, τ₀₁ = 4.6(3) × 10^-8 s, and U_eff1 = 2(1) K, τ₀₂ = 4.6(2) × 10^-5 s]. The ab initio calculations indicated that in these complexes, the Kramer's ground doublet is characterized by an axial g-tensor with the prevalence of the m_J = ±15/2 component, as well as that due to the weak magnetic coupling between the metal centers, the magnetic relaxation, which is dominated by the single Dy^III centers rather than by the exchange-coupled states, takes place via Raman/Orbach or TA-QTM. Moreover, theoretical calculations support a toroidal magnetic state for complex 2.

Rare-Earth (RE = Y, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) Chains Bridged with a Triplet Biradical and Magnetic Hysteresis Recorded for RE = Tb

Complex formation of 5-tert-butyl-1,3-phenylene bis(tert-butyl nitroxide) and rare-earth (RE) metal ions gave a linear chain where each nitroxide O atom is directly bonded to the RE ion. The bridge was proven to be a ground triplet molecule in the complexes. A hysteresis loop was recorded below 2.8 K as a single-chain magnet for the RE = Tb derivative.
