Experimental and simulation-based characterization of surfactant adsorption layers at fluid interfaces

Adsorption of surfactants to fluid interfaces occurs in numerous technological and daily-life contexts. The coverage at the interface and other properties of the formed adsorption layers determine the performance of a surfactant with regard to the desired application. Given the importance of these applications, there is a great demand for the comprehensive characterization and understanding of surfactant adsorption layers. In this review, we provide an overview of suitable experimental and simulation-based techniques and review the literature in which they were used for the investigation of surfactant adsorption layers. We come to the conclusion that, while these techniques have been successfully applied to investigate Langmuir monolayers of water-insoluble surfactants, their application to the study of Gibbs adsorption layers of water-soluble surfactants has not been fully exploited. Finally, we emphasize the great potential of these methods in providing a deeper understanding of the behavior of soluble surfactants at interfaces, which is crucial for optimizing their performance in various applications.

Supramolecular Large Nanosheets Assembled at Air/Water Interfaces and in Solution from Amphiphilic Heptagon-Containing Nanographenes

We report the synthesis of a new set of amphiphilic saddle-shaped heptagon-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) functionalized with tetraethylene glycol chains and their self-assembly into large two-dimensional (2D) polymers. An in-depth analysis of the self-assembly mechanism at the air/water interface has been carried out, and the proposed arrangement models are in good agreement with the molecular dynamics simulations. Quite remarkably, the number and disposition of the tetraethylene glycol chains significantly influence the disposition of the PAHs at the interface and conditionate their packing under pressure. For the three compounds studied, we observed three different behaviors in which the aromatic core is parallel, perpendicular, and tilted with respect to the water surface. We also show that these curved PAHs are able to self-assemble in solution into remarkably large sheets of up to 150 μm2. These results show the relationship, within a family of curved nanographenes, between the monomer configuration and their self-assembly capacity in air/water interfaces and organic-water mixtures.

Amorphous Carbon Films for Electronic Applications

While various crystalline carbon allotropes, including graphene, have been actively investigated, amorphous carbon (a-C) thin films have received relatively little attention. The a-C is a disordered form of carbon bonding with a broad range of the CC bond length and bond angle. Although accurate structural analysis and theoretical approaches are still insufficient, reproducible structure-property relationships have been accumulated. As the a-C thin film is now adapted as a hardmask in the semiconductor industry and new properties are reported continuously, expectations are growing that it can be practically used as active materials beyond as a simple sacrificial layer. In this perspective review article, after a brief introduction to the synthesis and properties of the a-C thin films, their potential practical applications are proposed, including hardmasks, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) pellicles, diffusion barriers, deformable electrodes and interconnects, sensors, active layers, electrodes for energy, micro-supercapacitors, batteries, nanogenerators, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and nanomembranes. The article ends with a discussion on the technological challenges in a-C thin films.

Scalable Synthesis of Carbon Nanomembranes from Amorphous Molecular Layers

Nanoporous carbon nanomembranes (CNMs) created by self-assembled monolayers ideally combine a high water flux and precise ion selectivity for molecular separation and water desalination. However, their practical implementation is often challenged by the availability of large epitaxial substrates, limiting the membrane up-scaling. Here, we report a scalable synthesis of CNMs from poly(4-vinylbiphenyl) (PVBP) spin-coated on SiO2/Si wafers. Electron irradiation of the amorphous PVBP molecular layers induces the formation of a continuous membrane with a thickness of 15 nm and a high density of subnanometer pores, providing a water permeance as high as 530 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, while repelling ions and molecules larger than 1 nm in size. A further introduction of a reinforced porous block copolymer layer enables the fabrication of centimeter-scale CNM composites that efficiently separate organic dyes from water. These results suggest a feasible route for large-scale nanomembrane fabrication.

Cross-linking reactions in Langmuir monolayers of specially designed aminolipids - a toolbox for the customized production of amphiphilic nanosheets

Synthetic amino lipids, already known as highly efficient gene therapy tool, are used in a novel way to create cross-linked stable one-molecule-thin films envisioned for future (bio)-materials applications. The films are prepared as Langmuir monolayers at the air/water interface and cross-linked 'in situ' via dynamic imine chemistry. The cross-linking process and the film characteristics are monitored by various surface-sensitive techniques such as grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, X-ray reflectivity, and infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy. After transfer onto carbon grids, the cross-linked films are investigated by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The obtained micrographs display mechanically self-supported nanosheets with area dimensions over several micrometers and, thus, an undeniable visual proof of successful cross-linking. The cross-linking process at the air/water interface allows to obtain Janus-faced sheets with a hydrophobic side characterized by aliphatic alkyl chains and a hydrophilic side characterized by nucleophilic groups like amines, hydroxyl groups and imine.

Substituent Effects from the Point of View of Energetics and Molecular Geometry in Acene, Polyene, and Polyyne Derivatives

The substituent effect (SE) is one of the most important topics in organic chemistry and related fields, and Hammett constants (σ) are commonly used to describe it. The results of the computational studies carried out for Y-R-X systems (reaction sites Y = NO₂, O^-; substituents X = NO₂, CN, Cl, H, OH, NH₂; spacers R = polyene, polyyne, acene with n = 1-5 repeatable units) show that the substituent properties depend significantly on n, the type of R, and Y. Results of the analysis of the substituent effect stabilization energy and geometrical parameters of the Y-R-X systems reveal that (i) the SE strength and its inductive and resonance components decay with the increase in spacer length, its weakening depends on the Y and R type; quantitative relations describing decay are presented; (ii) the ratio between inductive and resonance effect strength changes with n and depends on Y; (iii) differences in the substituents' properties are examples of reverse SE; (iv) in general, structural parameters are mutually well correlated as well as with the SE descriptors; (v) due to the strong O^- resonance effect, the changes in π-electron delocalization within R are well correlated with the SE strength only for Y = O^- systems.

Spontaneous formation of a self-healing carbon nanoskin at the liquid-liquid interface

Biological membranes exhibit the ability to self-repair and dynamically change their shape while remaining impermeable. Yet, these defining features are difficult to reconcile with mechanical robustness. Here, we report on the spontaneous formation of a carbon nanoskin at the oil-water interface that uniquely combines self-healing attributes with high stiffness. Upon the diffusion-controlled self-assembly of a reactive molecular surfactant at the interface, a solid elastic membrane forms within seconds and evolves into a continuous carbon monolayer with a thickness of a few nanometers. This nanoskin has a stiffness typical for a 2D carbon material with an elastic modulus in bending of more than 40-100 GPa; while brittle, it shows the ability to self-heal upon rupture, can be reversibly reshaped, and sustains complex shapes. We anticipate such an unusual 2D carbon nanomaterial to inspire novel approaches towards the formation of synthetic cells with rigid shells, additive manufacturing of composites, and compartmentalization in industrial catalysis.

Lamellar carbon-aluminosilicate nanocomposites with macroscopic orientation

Novel preparative approaches towards lamellar nanocomposites of carbon and inorganic materials are relevant for a broad range of technological applications. Here, we describe how to utilize the co-assembly of a liquid-crystalline hexaphenylene amphiphile and an aluminosilicate precursor to prepare carbon-aluminosilicate nanocomposites with controlled lamellar orientation and macroscopic order. To this end, the shear-induced alignment of a precursor phase of the two components resulted in thin films comprising lamellae with periodicities on the order of the molecular length scale, an "edge-on" orientation relative to the substrate and parallel to the shearing direction with order on the centimeter length scale. The lamellar structure, orientation, and macroscopic alignment were preserved in the subsequent pyrolysis that yielded the corresponding carbon-aluminosilicate nanocomposites.

Assembly of iron oxide nanosheets at the air-water interface by leucine-histidine peptides

The fabrication of inorganic nanomaterials is important for a wide range of disciplines. While many purely inorganic synthetic routes have enabled a manifold of nanostructures under well-controlled conditions, organisms have the ability to synthesize structures under ambient conditions. For example, magnetotactic bacteria, can synthesize tiny 'compass needles' of magnetite (Fe3O4). Here, we demonstrate the bio-inspired synthesis of extended, self-supporting, nanometer-thin sheets of iron oxide at the water-air interface through self-assembly using small histidine-rich peptides.

Influence of a single ether bond on assembly, orientation, and miscibility of phosphocholine lipids at the air-water interface

How does a small change in the structure of a phospholipid affect its supramolecular assembly? In aqueous suspensions, the substitution of one ester linkage in DPPC (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) by an ether linkage alters its phase behaviour completely. To unravel the effect of replacing a phospholipid's ester linkage by an ether linkage in lipid monolayers, we characterized pure monolayers of the model lipid DPPC and its sn-2 ether analogue PHPC (1-palmitoyl-2-O-hexadecyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) as well as mixtures of both by measurements of surface pressure-molecular area (π-Amol) isotherms. In addition, we used infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) to study lipid condensation, lipid chain orientation, headgroup hydration, and lipid miscibility in all samples. Mixed monolayers consisting of DPPC and PHPC were studied further using epifluorescence microscopy. Our results indicate a strong influence of the sn-2 ether linkage on headgroup hydration and ordering effects in the regions of the apolar chains and the headgroups. Both effects could originate from changes in glycerol conformation. Furthermore, we observed a second plateau in the π-Amol isotherms of DPPC/PHPC mixtures and analysis of the mixed π-Amol isotherms reveals a non-ideal mixing behaviour of both lipids which may be caused by conformational differences in their headgroups.

Masked Alkyne Equivalents for the Synthesis of Mechanically Interlocked Polyynes*

Polyyne polyrotaxanes, encapsulated cyclocarbon catenanes and other fascinating mechanically interlocked carbon-rich architectures should become accessible if masked alkyne equivalents (MAEs) can be developed that are large enough to prevent unthreading of a macrocycle, and that can be cleanly unmasked under mild conditions. Herein, we report the synthesis of a new bulky MAE based on t-butylbicyclo[4.3.1]decatriene. This MAE was used to synthesize a polyyne [2]rotaxane and a masked-polyyne [3]rotaxane by Cadiot-Chodkiewicz coupling. Glaser cyclo-oligomerization of the [2]rotaxane gave masked cyclocarbon catenanes. The unmasking behavior of the catenanes and rotaxanes was tested by photolysis at a range of UV wavelengths. Photochemical unmasking did not proceed cleanly enough to prepare extended encapsulated polyyne polyrotaxanes. We highlight the scope and challenges involved with this approach to interlocked carbon-rich architectures.

Angular invariance of the contribution of an anisotropic thin surface layer to reflectance and reflectance-absorbance

The absorbance studies of the optical radiation reflection from the boundary of two soft-matter media with a thin monolayer between are performed for a number of angles of incidence. The reflectance and absorbance spectra are described in terms of a unique spectrum invariant with respect to the incidence angles. The angular dependence of the absorbance for s-polarized radiation is shown to not provide any extra information as compared with a single-angle study in line with the previously developed theoretical considerations. We verify it experimentally performing the multi-angle infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy measurements at the air-water interface with a thin lipid film.

An Azidolipid Monolayer - Transitions, Miscibility, and UV Reactivity Studied by Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy

In this study, we characterized monolayers of an azide-modified lipid at the air-water interface, pure and in its mixtures with the model lipid DPPC, with the aim of proving its potential to be applied for photo-cross-linking with other molecules. We chose a phospholipid bearing a terminal azide group in one of its hydrophobic tails to study its monolayer characteristics with the Langmuir film balance technique. Furthermore, we performed infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) to get detailed insights into the organization of those monolayers as well as high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) to see the effects of UV-irradiation on the lipids' chemical structure and organization. Our results suggest that in expanded monolayers of pure azide-modified membrane lipids, the azido-terminated chain folds back toward the air-water interface. Above the LE/LC (liquid-expanded/liquid-condensed) phase transition, the chains stretched, and thus, the azide group detaches from the interface. From temperature-dependent monolayer compressions, we evaluated all relevant thermodynamic parameters of the monolayers, such as the phase transition pressure, the critical temperature, and the triple point, and compare them to those of model lipids. For future applications, we studied the miscibility of the azide-modified lipid with DPPC in monolayers and found at least a certain miscibility over all investigated mixing ratios ranging from 10 to 75% of the azidolipid. Finally, we irradiated the azidolipid monolayer with UV light at 305 nm and measured photodissociation of the azide, leading to chemical cross-linking with other lipids, which shows the potential to be used as a cross-linking agent within self-assembled lipid or lipid/protein layers.

Optical gap and fundamental gap of oligoynes and carbyne

The optoelectronic properties of various carbon allotropes and nanomaterials have been well established, while the purely sp-hybridized carbyne remains synthetically inaccessible. Its properties have therefore frequently been extrapolated from those of defined oligomers. Most analyses have, however, focused on the main optical transitions in UV-Vis spectroscopy, neglecting the frequently observed weaker optical bands at significantly lower energies. Here, we report a systematic photophysical analysis as well as computations on two homologous series of oligoynes that allow us to elucidate the nature of these weaker transitions and the intrinsic photophysical properties of oligoynes. Based on these results, we reassess the estimates for both the optical and fundamental gap of carbyne to below 1.6 eV, significantly lower than previously suggested by experimental studies of oligoynes.

Carbyne, a linear sp-hybridized carbon allotrope, is synthetically inaccessible and its properties are extrapolated from those of defined oligomers. Here the authors analyze weak optical bands in two series of oligoynes and reassess the optical and fundamental gap of carbyne to lower values than previously suggested.

Hexayne Amphiphiles and Bolaamphiphiles

Oligoynes with two or more conjugated carbon-carbon triple bonds are useful precursors for carbon-rich nanomaterials. However, their range of applications has so far been severely limited by the challenging syntheses, particularly in the case of oligoynes with functional groups. Here, we report a universal synthetic approach towards both symmetric and unsymmetric, functionalized hexaynes through the use of a modified Eglinton-Galbraith coupling and a sacrificial building block. We demonstrate the versatility of this approach by preparing hexaynes functionalized with phosphonic acid, carboxylic acid, ammonium, or thiol head groups, which serve as neutral, cationogenic, or anionogenic interfacially active groups. We show that these hexaynes are carbon-rich amphiphiles or bolaamphiphiles that self-assemble at liquid-liquid interfaces, on solid surfaces, as well as in aqueous media.

Liquid-Metal-Templated Synthesis of 2D Graphitic Materials at Room Temperature

Room-temperature synthesis of 2D graphitic materials (2D-GMs) remains an elusive aim, especially with electrochemical means. Here, it is shown that liquid metals render this possible as they offer catalytic activity and an ultrasmooth templating interface that promotes Frank-van der Merwe regime growth, while allowing facile exfoliation due to the absence of interfacial forces as a nonpolar liquid. The 2D-GMs are formed at low onset potential and can be in situ doped depending on the choice of organic precursors and the electrochemical set-up. The materials are tuned to exhibit porous or pinhole-free morphologies and are engineered for their degree of oxidation and number of layers. The proposed liquid-metal-based room-temperature electrochemical route can be expanded to many other 2D materials.

Ionic Polyimide Derived Porous Carbon Nanosheets as High-Efficiency Oxygen Reduction Catalysts for Zn-Air Batteries

Two-dimensional (2D) porous carbon nanosheets (2DPCs) have attracted great attention for their good porosity and long-distance conductivity. Factors such as templates, precursors, and carbonization-activation methods, directly determine their performance. However, rational design and preparation of porous carbon materials with controlled 2D morphology and heteroatom dopants remains a challenge. Therefore, an ionic polyimide with both sp² - and sp³ -hybridized nitrogen atoms was prepared as a precursor for fabricating N-doped hexagonal porous carbon nanosheets through a hard-template approach. Because of the large surface area and efficient charge-mass transport, the resulting activated 2D porous carbon nanosheets (2DPCs-a) displayed promising electrocatalytic properties for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline and acidic media, such as ultralow half-wave potential (0.83 vs. 0.84 V of Pt/C) and superior limiting current density (5.42 vs. 5.14 mA cm^-2 of Pt/C). As air cathodes in Zn-air batteries, the as-developed 2DPCs-a exhibited long stability and high capacity (up to 614 mA h g^-1 ), which are both higher than those of commercial Pt/C. This work provides a convenient method for controllable and scalable 2DPCs fabrication as well as new opportunities to develop high-efficiency electrocatalysts for ORR and Zn-air batteries.

Emerging Bottom-Up Strategies for the Synthesis of Graphene Nanoribbons and Related Structures

The solution-phase synthesis is one of the most promising strategies for the preparation of well-defined graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) in large scale. To prepare high quality, defect-free GNRs, cycloaromatization reactions need to be very efficient, proceed without side reaction and mild enough to accommodate the presence of various functional groups. In this Minireview, we present the latest synthetic approaches for the synthesis of GNRs and related structures, including alkyne benzannulation, photochemical cyclodehydrohalogenation, Mallory and Pd- and Ni-catalyzed reactions.

A Multifunctional Hybrid[4]arene-Based Macrocyclic Amphiphile: Self-Assembly, Tunable LCST Behavior, and Construction of Fluorescent Nanoparticles for Cell Imaging

A novel macrocyclic amphiphile based on hybrid[4]arene containing tri(ethylene glycol) chains as the hydrophilic part and benzene rings as the hydrophobic part was synthesized. It self-assembled to produce nanoparticles and showed lower critical solution temperature behavior that was affected by its concentration and K⁺. Moreover, amphiphilic H can encapsulate dye G to form host-guest complexes H⊃G, accompanied by significant fluorescence enhancement. H⊃G can further self-assemble to form fluorescent nanoparticles that can be applied in cell imaging.

Artificial Phospholipids and Their Vesicles

Phospholipids are at the heart and origin of life on this planet. The possibilities in terms of phospholipid self-assembly and biological functions seem limitless. Nonetheless, nature exploits only a small fraction of the available chemical space of phospholipids. Using chemical synthesis, artificial phospholipid structures become accessible, and the study of their biophysics may reveal unprecedented properties. In this article, the recent advances by our work group in the field of chemical lipidology are summarized. The family of diamidophospholipids is discussed in detail from monolayer characterization to the formation of faceted vesicles, culminating in the template-free self-assembly of phospholipid cubes and the possible applications of vesicle origami in modern personalized medicine.

Biphasic Formation of 2D Nanomembranes by Photopolymerization of Diacetylene Lipids as Revealed by Infrared Difference Spectroscopy

Two-dimensional nanomembranes are promising materials for filtration or separation by providing the basis for controlled and rapid transport between two compartments. The polymerization by UV light of diacetylene-containing lipids at an interface produces free-standing 2D nanomembranes. Here, we analyzed in situ the nanomembrane formation of 1,2-bis(10,12-tricosadiynoyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DiynePC) and 1-palmitoyl-2-(10,12-tricosadiynoyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (PTPE) on germanium using light-induced infrared difference spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection to obtain insights into the kinetics and mechanism of the polymerization process. Our interpretation is supported by atomic force microscopy and density functional theory. Formation of the polymer network is evidenced by changes in the frequency of C═O stretches acting as infrared probes. However, spectral and kinetic analysis revealed a biphasic process in the monolayer. In both phases, losses in signal of CH₂ stretches are observed which are not in agreement with the accepted mechanism of chain propagation for diacetylene polymerization. These signals are dominant in the second phase and are assigned to termination reactions with some contributions from intramolecular consecutive reactions. This finding now provides a spectroscopic measure for the identity and integrity of the nanomembrane complementary to microscopic analysis. We deduce that limited 2D mobility on the solid support promotes intramolecular termination, leading to smaller domains.

Investigating Ions at Amphiphilic Monolayers with X-ray Fluorescence

Amphiphilic monolayers formed at the soft air/liquid interface are easy-to-handle and versatile model systems for material and life sciences. Helmuth Möhwald was one of the pioneers in this field. Over the last few decades, total-reflection X-ray fluorescence (TRXF) has become an important analytical tool for the investigation of monolayer interactions with ions. Here, the theoretical background of TRXF is described, and practical aspects are discussed. The experimentally determined fluorescence intensity from the adsorbed ions can be interpreted quantitatively either by a calibration procedure utilizing monolayers with known charge density or by calibration with respect to the bare aqueous surface. Both calibration approaches yield quantitatively consistent results within <10% accuracy. Some examples demonstrating the power of TRXF for the study of ion adsorption to charged and noncharged monolayers as well as for the characterization of the physicochemical properties of novel cationic lipids used for improved gene delivery are given.

Peptide-Controlled Assembly of Macroscopic Calcium Oxalate Nanosheets

The fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) biomineral nanosheets is of high interest owing to their promise for applications in electronics, filtration, catalysis, and chemical sensing. Using a facile approach inspired by biomineralization in nature, we fabricate laterally macroscopic calcium oxalate nanosheets using β-folded peptides. The template peptides are composed of repetitive glutamic acid and leucine amino acids, self-organized at the air-water interface. Surface-specific sum frequency generation spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the formation of oxalate nanosheets relies on the peptide-Ca²⁺ ion interaction at the interface, which not only restructures the peptides but also templates Ca²⁺ ions into a calcium oxalate dihydrate lattice. Combined, this enables the formation of a critical structural intermediate in the assembly pathway toward the oxalate sheet formation. These insights into peptide-ion interfacial interaction are important for designing novel inorganic 2D materials.

Construction of Coordination Nanosheets Based on Tris(2,2'-bipyridine)-Iron (Fe2+) Complexes as Potential Electrochromic Materials

The coordination nanosheets (CONASHs) are emerging as a new class of functional two-dimensional materials, which are one of the most active research areas of chemistry and physics in this decade. Despite the success of various structural and functional CONASHs, the development of a new molecular structure to discover alluring functional CONASHs remains challenging. Herein, we report successful preparation of two novel CONASHs (NBP1 and NBP2) through coordination between one of the unexplored molecular frameworks of bis(2,2'-bipyridine)-based ligands (BP1 and BP2) and Fe²⁺ ions. Using a liquid-liquid interface as a platform, large-scale thin films of multilayer CONASHs have been prepared without any support, which can be deposited onto any desired substrate. Detailed characterization of the CONASHs using various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques reveals homogeneous and flat morphology of nanometer thickness with the quantitative formation of tris(2,2'-bipyridine)-Fe²⁺ complex motifs in the nanosheet frameworks. The color of the films has been tuned from blue to magenta by the suitable molecular design of the ligands. Owing to the insolubility of the CONASH films in any solvent and the presence of redox-active Fe²⁺, we explore the functionality of these nanostructured thin films deposited on indium tin oxide as electrochromic materials. The CONASHs exhibit color-to-colorless and color-to-color electrochromic transitions with attractive response times, switching stabilities, and coloration efficiencies. Finally, we demonstrate solid-state electrochromic devices of the CONASHs operated at a potential range of +2.5 to -2.5 V, which are electrochemically stable for several switching cycles, suggesting that these CONASHs are potential electrochromic materials for next-generation display applications.

Carbon Nanosheets by Morphology-Retained Carbonization of Two-Dimensional Assembled Anisotropic Carbon Nanorings

Two-dimensional (2D) carbon nanomaterials possessing promising physical and chemical properties find applications in high-performance energy storage devices and catalysts. However, large-scale fabrication of 2D carbon nanostructures is based on a few specific carbon templates or precursors and poses a formidable challenge. Now a new bottom-up method for carbon nanosheet fabrication using a newly designed anisotropic carbon nanoring molecule, CPPhen, is presented. CPPhen was self-assembled at a dynamic air-water interface with a vortex motion to afford molecular nanosheets, which were then carbonized under inert gas flow. Their nanosheet morphologies were retained after carbonization, which has never been seen for low-molecular weight compounds. Furthermore, adding pyridine as a nitrogen dopant in the self-assembly step successfully afforded nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets containing mainly pyridinic nitrogen species.

Polyyne formation via skeletal rearrangement induced by atomic manipulation

Rearrangements that change the connectivity of a carbon skeleton are often useful in synthesis, but it can be difficult to follow their mechanisms. Scanning probe microscopy can be used to manipulate a skeletal rearrangement at the single-molecule level, while monitoring the geometry of reactants, intermediates and final products with atomic resolution. We studied the reductive rearrangement of 1,1-dibromo alkenes to polyynes on a NaCl surface at 5 K, a reaction that resembles the Fritsch–Buttenberg–Wiechell (FBW) rearrangement. Voltage pulses were used to cleave one C–Br bond, forming a radical, then to cleave the remaining C^•–Br bond triggering the rearrangement. These experiments provide structural insight into the bromo-vinyl radical intermediates, showing that the C=C^•–Br unit is nonlinear. Long polyynes, up to the octayne Ph–(C≡C)₈–Ph, have been prepared in this way. The control of skeletal rearrangements opens a new window on carbon-rich materials and extends the toolbox for molecular synthesis by atom manipulation.

Assembly and Self-Assembly of Nanomembrane Materials-From 2D to 3D

Nanoscience and nanotechnology offer great opportunities and challenges in both fundamental research and practical applications, which require precise control of building blocks with micro/nanoscale resolution in both individual and mass-production ways. The recent and intensive nanotechnology development gives birth to a new focus on nanomembrane materials, which are defined as structures with thickness limited to about one to several hundred nanometers and with much larger (typically at least two orders of magnitude larger, or even macroscopic scale) lateral dimensions. Nanomembranes can be readily processed in an accurate manner and integrated into functional devices and systems. In this Review, a nanotechnology perspective of nanomembranes is provided, with examples of science and applications in semiconductor, metal, insulator, polymer, and composite materials. Assisted assembly of nanomembranes leads to wrinkled/buckled geometries for flexible electronics and stacked structures for applications in photonics and thermoelectrics. Inspired by kirigami/origami, self-assembled 3D structures are constructed via strain engineering. Many advanced materials have begun to be explored in the format of nanomembranes and extend to biomimetic and 2D materials for various applications. Nanomembranes, as a new type of nanomaterials, allow nanotechnology in a controllable and precise way for practical applications and promise great potential for future nanorelated products.

Characterization of Robust and Free-Standing 2D-Nanomembranes of UV-Polymerized Diacetylene Lipids

Free-standing lipid membranes are promising as artificial functional membrane systems for application in separation, filtration, and nanopore sensing. To improve the mechanical properties of lipid membranes, UV-polymerized lipids have been introduced. We investigated free-standing as well as substrate-supported monolayers of 1-palmitoyl-2-(10,12-tricosadiynoyl)- sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (PTPE) and 1,2-bis(10,12-tricosadiynoyl)- sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DiynePC) and characterized them with respect to their structure, morphology, and stability. Using helium ion microscopy (HIM), we were able to visualize the integrity of the lipid 2D-nanomembranes spanning micrometer-sized voids under high-vacuum conditions. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) investigations under ambient conditions revealed formation of intact and robust pore-spanning 2D-nanomembranes up to 8 × 2 μm² in size. Analysis by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) verified a distinct reduction of signal at 2143 cm^-1 from diacetylene groups in the 2D-nanomembranes after UV-polymerization. Further high-resolution AFM investigations of unpolymerized lipid monolayers revealed a well-ordered two-dimensional network, when deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). These structures were inhibited for polymerized adlayers. Structural models for the molecular arrangement of the adlayers are proposed and discussed.

Organogel-assisted topochemical synthesis of multivalent glyco-polymer for high-affinity lectin binding

An organogelator, 2,4-undeca-diynyl-4',6'-O-benzylidene-β-d-galactopyranoside, which aligns its diacetylene upon gelation, has been synthesized. UV irradiation of its gel resulted in topochemical polymerization of the gelator forming polydiacetylene (PDA). We have used this gel-state reaction for the synthesis of surface-immobilized multi-valent glycoclusters, which showed 1000-fold enhanced binding, compared to monomers, with various galactose-binding lectins.

Recent progress in the stabilization of supramolecular assemblies with functional polydiacetylenes

Correlation of surface pressure and hue of planarizable push-pull chromophores at the air/water interface

It is currently not possible to directly measure the lateral pressure of a biomembrane. Mechanoresponsive fluorescent probes are an elegant solution to this problem but it requires first the establishment of a direct correlation between the membrane surface pressure and the induced color change of the probe. Here, we analyze planarizable dithienothiophene push-pull probes in a monolayer at the air/water interface using fluorescence microscopy, grazing-incidence angle X-ray diffraction, and infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy. An increase of the lateral membrane pressure leads to a well-packed layer of the 'flipper' mechanophores and a clear change in hue above 18 mN/m. The fluorescent probes had no influence on the measured isotherm of the natural phospholipid DPPC suggesting that the flippers probe the lateral membrane pressure without physically changing it. This makes the flipper probes a truly useful addition to the membrane probe toolbox.

Synthesis of Responsive Two-Dimensional Polymers via Self-Assembled DNA Networks

Despite a growing interest in two-dimensional polymers, their rational synthesis remains a challenge. The solution-phase synthesis of a two-dimensional polymer is reported. A DNA-based monomer self-assembles into a supramolecular network, which is further converted into the covalently linked two-dimensional polymer by anthracene dimerization. The polymers appear as uniform monolayers, as shown by AFM and TEM imaging. Furthermore, they exhibit a pronounced solvent responsivity. The results demonstrate the value of DNA-controlled self-assembly for the formation of two-dimensional polymers in solution.

Evidence of Structure-Performance Relation for Surfactants Used as Antiagglomerants for Hydrate Management

Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to study the structure of molecularly thin films of antiagglomerants adsorbed at the interface between sII methane hydrates and a liquid hydrocarbon. The liquid hydrocarbon was composed of dissolved methane and higher-molecular-weight alkane such as n-hexane, n-octane, and n-dodecane. The antiagglomerants considered were surface-active compounds with three hydrophobic tails and a complex hydrophilic head that contains both amide and tertiary ammonium cation groups. The length of the hydrophobic tails and the surface density of the compounds were changed systematically. The results were analyzed in terms of the preferential orientation of the antiagglomerants, density distributions of various molecular compounds, and other molecular-level properties. At low surface densities, the hydrophobic tails do not show preferred orientation, irrespectively of the tail length. At sufficiently high surface densities, our simulations show pronounced differences in the structure of the interfacial film depending on the molecular features and on the type of hydrocarbons present in the system. Some antiagglomerants are found to pack densely at the interface and exclude methane from the interfacial region. Under these conditions, the antiagglomerant film resembles a frozen interface. The hydrophobic tails of the antiagglomerants that show this feature has a length comparable to that of the n-dodecane in the liquid phase. It is possible that the structured interfacial layer is in part responsible for determining the performance of antiagglomerants in flow-assurance applications. The simulation results are compared against experimental data obtained with the rocking cell apparatus. It was found that the antiagglomerants for which our simulations suggest evidence of a frozen interface at sufficiently high surface densities are those that show better performance in rocking cell experiments.

Synthesis and Use of Reactive Molecular Precursors for the Preparation of Carbon Nanomaterials

The use of reactive molecular carbon precursors is required if the preparation of carbon nanostructures and nanomaterials is to be achieved under conditions that are sufficiently benign to control their nanoscopic morphology and tailor their chemical functionalization. Recently, oligoyne precursors have been explored for this purpose, as they are sufficiently stable to be available in tangible quantities but readily rearrange in reactions that yield other forms of carbon. In this chapter, we briefly discuss available synthetic routes toward higher oligoynes that mostly rely on transition metal-mediated coupling reactions. Thereafter, a comprehensive overview of the use of oligoyne derivatives as precursors for carbon nanostructures and nanomaterials is given. While the non-templated conversion of simple oligoynes into carbonaceous matter exemplifies their potential as metastable carbon precursors, the more recent attempts to use functionalized oligoynes in host–guest complexes, self-assembled aggregates, thin films, colloids or other types of supramolecular structures have paved the way toward a new generation of carbon nanomaterials with predictable nanoscopic morphology and chemical functionalization.
