Operating organic light-emitting diodes imaged by super-resolution spectroscopy

Functionalized [2.2]Paracyclophanedienes as Monomers for Poly(p-phenylenevinylene)s

Poly(p-phenylenevinylene)s (PPVs) featuring complex side-chains, to date, have only been synthesized by nonliving polymerization methods which have no control over PPV molecular weights, dispersities, or end groups. [2.2]Paracyclophane-1,9-diene (pCpd) has gained attention as a monomer for its ability to be ring-opened to PPV in a living fashion. pCpd, an organic cyclic scaffold with planar chirality, has seen minimal structural diversity due to the harsh reaction conditions required to afford the highly strained compound. Herein, we introduce a general method to overcome this by targeting the synthesis of a monohydroxy-pCpd via mono-demethylation of a dialkoxy-pCpd. The monohydroxy-pCpd can then be functionalized easily, which we demonstrate using three distinct side-chains with four moieties commonly incorporated in conjugated polymers: an alkyl bromide, an oligo(ethylene glycol) chain, an enantiomerically pure side-chain, and a Boc-protected amine. These monofunctionalized-pCpds were investigated as monomers in the ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to afford functionalized PPVs in a living manner. The functional-group-containing PPVs are synthesized with full control over their end groups, repeat units, and dispersities. The feasibility of post-polymerization modifications to incorporate any desired moiety to PPV fabricated by this method was demonstrated using an azide-alkyne click reaction. All synthesized PPVs were soluble in organic solvents and display the same fluorescent emission, indicating their conjugated backbones are unaltered.

Synthesis and Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization of o-Dialkoxy Paracyclophanedienes

The highly strained ortho-diethylhexyloxy [2.2]paracyclophane-1,9-diene (M1) can be synthesized by ring contraction of a dithia[3.3]paracyclophane using a benzyne-induced Stevens rearrangement. This paracyclophanediene undergoes ring-opening metathesis polymerization to give well-defined 2,3-dialkoxyphenylenevinylene polymers with an alternating cis/trans alkene stereochemistry and controllable molecular weight. Fully conjugated block copolymers with electron-rich and electron-deficient phenylene vinylene polymer segments can be prepared by sequential monomer additions. These polymers can be readily isomerized to the all-trans stereochemistry polymer. The optical and electrochemical properties of these polymers were investigated by theory and experiment.

Spatially Resolved Photogenerated Exciton and Charge Transport in Emerging Semiconductors

We review recent advances in the characterization of electronic forms of energy transport in emerging semiconductors. The approaches described all temporally and spatially resolve the evolution of initially localized populations of photogenerated excitons or charge carriers. We first provide a comprehensive background for describing the physical origin and nature of electronic energy transport both microscopically and from the perspective of the observer. We introduce the new family of far-field, time-resolved optical microscopies developed to directly resolve not only the extent of this transport but also its potentially temporally and spatially dependent rate. We review a representation of examples from the recent literature, including investigation of energy flow in colloidal quantum dot solids, organic semiconductors, organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites, and 2D transition metal dichalcogenides. These examples illustrate how traditional parameters like diffusivity are applicable only within limited spatiotemporal ranges and how the techniques at the core of this review,especially when taken together, are revealing a more complete picture of the spatiotemporal evolution of energy transport in complex semiconductors, even as a function of their structural heterogeneities.

Reflection confocal nanoscopy using a super-oscillatory lens

A superoscillatory lens (SOL) is known to produce a sub-diffraction hotspot that is useful for high-resolution imaging. SOLs have not yet been directly used in a confocal reflection setup, as the SOL suffers from poor imaging properties. Additionally, the illuminating intensity distribution of the SOL still has high-intensity rings called sidelobes coexisting with the central hotspot. By means of a reflection setup, which does not have the SOL in the detection chain, thereby mitigating the poor imaging properties, we assessed the resolution capabilities of a SOL. This was done for different objects, whose dimensions were both above and below the SOL field-of-view (FOV). We found that the sidelobe illumination degrades the imaging properties in the case of extended objects, limiting the applicability of a SOL system.
