Emergence of charge order from the vortex state of a high-temperature superconductor

Using strain to uncover the interplay between two- and three-dimensional charge density waves in high-temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3Oy

Uniaxial pressure provides an efficient approach to control charge density waves in YBa2Cu3Oy. It can enhance the correlation volume of ubiquitous short-range two-dimensional charge-density-wave correlations, and induces a long-range three-dimensional charge density wave, otherwise only accessible at large magnetic fields. Here, we use x-ray diffraction to study the strain dependence of these charge density waves and uncover direct evidence for a form of competition between them. We show that this interplay is qualitatively described by including strain effects in a nonlinear sigma model of competing superconducting and charge-density-wave orders. Our analysis suggests that strain stabilizes the 3D charge density wave in the regions between disorder-pinned domains of 2D charge density waves, and that the two orders compete at the boundaries of these domains. No signatures of discommensurations nor of pair density waves are observed. From a broader perspective, our results underscore the potential of strain tuning as a powerful tool for probing competing orders in quantum materials.

Atomic-scale interpretation of the quantum oscillations in cuprate superconductors

Cuprate superconductors display unusual features in bothkspace and real space as the superconductivity is suppressed-a broken Fermi surface, charge density wave, and pseudogap. Contrarily, recent transport measurements on cuprates under high magnetic fields report quantum oscillations (QOs), which imply rather a usual Fermi liquid behavior. To settle the disagreement, we investigated Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8+δunder a magnetic field in an atomic scale. A particle-hole (p-h) asymmetrically dispersing density of states (DOSs) modulation was found at the vortices on a slightly underdoped sample, while on a highly underdoped sample, no trace of the vortex was found even at 13 T. However, a similar p-h asymmetric DOS modulation persisted in almost an entire field of view. From this observation, we infer an alternative explanation of the QO results by providing a unifying picture where the aforementioned seemingly conflicting evidence from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, and magneto-transport measurements can be understood solely in terms of the DOS modulations.

Locally commensurate charge-density wave with three-unit-cell periodicity in YBa2Cu3Oy

In order to identify the mechanism responsible for the formation of charge-density waves (CDW) in cuprate superconductors, it is important to understand which aspects of the CDW's microscopic structure are generic and which are material-dependent. Here, we show that, at the local scale probed by NMR, long-range CDW order in YBa2Cu3Oy is unidirectional with a commensurate period of three unit cells (λ = 3b), implying that the incommensurability found in X-ray scattering is ensured by phase slips (discommensurations). Furthermore, NMR spectra reveal a predominant oxygen character of the CDW with an out-of-phase relationship between certain lattice sites but no specific signature of a secondary CDW with λ = 6b associated with a putative pair-density wave. These results shed light on universal aspects of the cuprate CDW. In particular, its spatial profile appears to generically result from the interplay between an incommensurate tendency at long length scales, possibly related to properties of the Fermi surface, and local commensuration effects, due to electron-electron interactions or lock-in to the lattice.

Anomalous vortex liquid in charge-ordered cuprate superconductors

The magnetic-field scale at which superconducting vortices persist in underdoped cuprate superconductors has remained a controversial subject. Here we present an electrical transport study on three distinctly different cuprate families, at temperatures down to 0.32 K and magnetic fields up to 45 T. We reveal the presence of an anomalous vortex liquid state with a highly nonohmic resistivity in all three materials, irrespective of the level of disorder or structural details. The doping and field regime over which this anomalous vortex state persists suggests its occurrence is tied to the presence of long-range charge order under high magnetic field. Our results demonstrate that the intricate interplay between charge order and superconductivity can lead to an exotic vortex state.

The interplay between charge order and d-wave superconductivity in high-Tc cuprates remains an open question. While mounting evidence from spectroscopic probes indicates that charge order competes with superconductivity, to date little is known about the impact of charge order on charge transport in the mixed state, when vortices are present. Here we study the low-temperature electrical resistivity of three distinctly different cuprate families under intense magnetic fields, over a broad range of hole doping and current excitations. We find that the electronic transport in the doping regime where long-range charge order is known to be present is characterized by a nonohmic resistivity, the identifying feature of an anomalous vortex liquid. The field and temperature range in which this nonohmic behavior occurs indicates that the presence of long-range charge order is closely related to the emergence of this anomalous vortex liquid, near a vortex solid boundary that is defined by the excitation current in the T→ 0 limit. Our findings further suggest that this anomalous vortex liquid, a manifestation of fragile superconductivity with a suppressed critical current density, is ubiquitous in the high-field state of charge-ordered cuprates.

Revival of Charge Density Waves and Charge Density Fluctuations in Cuprate High-Temperature Superconductors

I present here a short memory of my scientific contacts with K.A. Müller starting from the Interlaken Conference (1988), Erice (1992 and 1993), and Cottbus (1994) on the initial studies on phase separation (PS) and charge inhomogeneity in cuprates carried out against the view of the majority of the scientific community at that time. Going over the years and passing through the charge density wave (CDW) instability of the correlated Fermi liquid (FL) and to the consequences of charge density fluctuations (CDFs), I end with a presentation of my current research activity on CDWs and the related two-dimensional charge density fluctuations (2D-CDFs). A scenario follows of the physics of cuprates, which includes the solution of the decades-long problem of the strange metal (SM) state.

Charge ordering in superconducting copper oxides

Charge order has recently been identified as a leading competitor of high-temperature superconductivity in moderately doped cuprates. We provide a survey of universal and materials-specific aspects of this phenomenon, with emphasis on results obtained by scattering methods. In particular, we discuss the structure, periodicity, and stability range of the charge-ordered state, its response to various external perturbations, the influence of disorder, the coexistence and competition with superconductivity, as well as collective charge dynamics. In the context of this journal issue which honors Roger Cowley's legacy, we also discuss the connection of charge ordering with lattice vibrations and the central-peak phenomenon. We end the review with an outlook on research opportunities offered by new synthesis methods and experimental platforms, including cuprate thin films and superlattices.

Anomalies in the pseudogap phase of the cuprates: competing ground states and the role of umklapp scattering

Over the past two decades, advances in computational algorithms have revealed a curious property of the two-dimensional Hubbard model (and related theories) with hole doping: the presence of close-in-energy competing ground states that display very different physical properties. On the one hand, there is a complicated state exhibiting intertwined spin, charge, and pair density wave orders. We call this 'type A'. On the other hand, there is a uniform d-wave superconducting state that we denote as 'type B'. We advocate, with the support of both microscopic theoretical calculations and experimental data, dividing the high-temperature cuprate superconductors into two corresponding families, whose properties reflect either the type A or type B ground states at low temperatures. We review the anomalous properties of the pseudogap phase that led us to this picture, and present a modern perspective on the role that umklapp scattering plays in these phenomena in the type B materials. This reflects a consistent framework that has emerged over the last decade, in which Mott correlations at weak coupling drive the formation of the pseudogap. We discuss this development, recent theory and experiments, and open issues.

Enhancing the homogeneity of YBa2(Cu1−x Fe x )3O7−δsingle crystals by using an Fe-added Y2O3 crucible via top-seeded solution growth

Sizable metal-ion-doped YBa2Cu3O7−δ single crystals with high uniformity have been in great demand for fundamental studies on superconductivity. This article reports a novel approach, based on top-seeded solution growth and characterized by using an Fe-added Y2O3 crucible, to effectively enhance the homogeneity of YBa2(Cu1−x Fe x )3O7−δ single crystals. Because Fe ions are absorbable on or dissolvable from the Fe-Y2O3 crucible, it functions as a reservoir, yielding a stable Fe concentration in the liquid. Consequently, a series of acceptably sized YBa2(Cu1−x Fe x )3O7−δ single crystals with better uniformity than those grown by previous methods were obtained. The new dopant-added crucible, capable of balancing the solution spontaneously, is broadly applicable for preparing other doped single crystals.

Tc and Other Cuprate Properties in Relation to Planar Charges as Measured by NMR

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in cuprate research is a prominent bulk local probe of magnetic properties. NMR also, as was shown over the last years, actually provides a quantitative measure of local charges in the CuO 2 plane. This has led to fundamental insights, e.g., that the maximum T c is determined by the sharing of the parent planar hole between Cu and O. Using bonding orbital hole contents on planar Cu and O measured by NMR, instead of the total doping x, the thus defined two-dimensional cuprate phase diagram reveals significant differences between the various cuprate materials. Even more importantly, the reflected differences in material chemistry appear to set a number of electronic properties as we discuss here, for undoped, underdoped and optimally doped cuprates. These relations should advise attempts at a theoretical understanding of cuprate physics as well as inspire material chemists towards new high- T c materials. Probing planar charges, NMR is also sensitive to charge variations or ordering phenomena in the CuO 2 plane. Thereby, local charge order on planar O in optimally doped YBCO could recently be proven. Charge density variations seen by NMR in both planar bonding orbitals with amplitudes between 1% to 5% appear to be omnipresent in the doped CuO 2 plane, i.e., not limited to underdoped cuprates and low temperatures.

The Ancient Romans’ Route to Charge Density Waves in Cuprates

An account is given of the main steps that led the research group in Rome, to which the author belongs, to the formulation of the charge-density-wave scenario for high- T c superconducting cuprates. The early finding of the generic tendency of strongly correlated electron systems with short range interactions to undergo electron phase separation was subsequently contrasted with the homogenizing effect of the long-range Coulomb interaction. The two effects can find a compromise in the formation of incommensurate charge density waves. These charge density waves are inherently dynamical and are overdamped as a consequence of the possibility to decay in electron-hole pairs, yet tend to maintain a (quantum) critical character, which is mirrored in their marked momentum and frequency dependence and in their strong variation with temperature and doping. These dynamical incommensurate charge density waves act as mediators of pairing lading to high- T c superconductivity, and provide the scattering mechanism that produces the observed violation of the Fermi-liquid paradigm in the metallic phase.

Disorder raises the critical temperature of a cuprate superconductor

With the discovery of charge-density waves (CDWs) in most members of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors, the interplay between superconductivity and CDWs has become a key point in the debate on the origin of high-temperature superconductivity. Some experiments in cuprates point toward a CDW state competing with superconductivity, but others raise the possibility of a CDW-superconductivity intertwined order or more elusive pair-density waves (PDWs). Here, we have used proton irradiation to induce disorder in crystals of [Formula: see text] and observed a striking 50% increase of [Formula: see text], accompanied by a suppression of the CDWs. This is in sharp contrast with the behavior expected of a d-wave superconductor, for which both magnetic and nonmagnetic defects should suppress [Formula: see text] Our results thus make an unambiguous case for the strong detrimental effect of the CDW on bulk superconductivity in [Formula: see text] Using tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) measurements, we find indications for potential dynamic layer decoupling in a PDW phase. Our results establish irradiation-induced disorder as a particularly relevant tuning parameter for the many families of superconductors with coexisting density waves, which we demonstrate on superconductors such as the dichalcogenides and [Formula: see text].

Evolution of Pairing Orders between Pseudogap and Superconducting Phases of Cuprate Superconductors

One of the most puzzling problems of high temperature cuprate superconductor is the pseudogap phase (PG) at temperatures above the superconducting transition temperature in the underdoped regime. The PG phase is found by the angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) to have a gap at some regions in momentum space and a fraction of Fermi surface remained, known as Fermi arcs. The arc turns into a d-wave SC gap with a node below the SC transition temperature. Here, by studying a strongly correlated model at low temperatures, we obtained a phase characterized by two kinds of pairing order parameters with the total momentum of the Cooper pair to be zero and finite. The finite momentum pairing is accompanied with a spatial modulation of pairing order, i.e. a pair density wave (PDW). These PDW phases are intertwined with modulations of charge density and intra-unit cell form factors. The coexistence of the two different pairing orders provides the unique two-gaps like spectra observed by ARPES for superconducting cuprates. As temperature raises, the zero-momentum pairing order vanishes while the finite momentum pairing orders are kept, thus Fermi arcs are realized. The calculated quasiparticle spectra have the similar doping and temperature dependence as reported by ARPES and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). The consequence of breaking symmetry between x and y due to the unidirectional PDW and the possibility to probe such a PDW state in the PG phase is discussed.

Unusual Interplay between Superconductivity and Field-Induced Charge Order in YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}

We present a detailed study of the temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) dependence of the electronic density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level, as deduced from specific heat and Knight shift measurements in underdoped YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}. We find that the DOS becomes field independent above a characteristic field H_{DOS}, and that the H_{DOS}(T) line displays an unusual inflection near the onset of the long-range 3D charge-density wave order. The unusual S shape of H_{DOS}(T) is suggestive of two mutually exclusive orders that eventually establish a form of cooperation in order to coexist at low T. On theoretical grounds, such a collaboration could result from the stabilization of a pair-density wave state, which calls for further investigation in this region of the phase diagram.

Bulk Charge Ordering in the CuO2 Plane of the Cuprate Superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.9 by High-Pressure NMR

Cuprate superconductors still hold many open questions, and recently, the role of symmetry breaking electronic charge ordering resurfaced in underdoped cuprates as a phenomenon that competes with superconductivity. Here, unambiguous nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) proof is presented for the existence of local charge ordering in nearly optimally doped YBa2Cu3O6.9, even up to room temperature. Increasing pressure and decreasing temperature leads to the highest degree of order in the sense that the two oxygen atoms of the unit cell of the CuO2 plane develop a charge difference of about 0.02 holes, and order throughout the whole crystal. At ambient conditions, a slightly smaller charge difference and a decreased order is found. Evidence from literature data suggests that this charge ordering is ubiquitous to the CuO2 plane of all cuprates. Thus, the role of charge ordering in the cuprates must be reassessed.

Pseudo-spin skyrmions in the phase diagram of cuprate superconductors

Topological states of matter are at the root of some of the most fascinating phenomena in condensed matter physics. Here we argue that skyrmions in the pseudo-spin space related to an emerging SU(2) symmetry enlighten many mysterious properties of the pseudogap phase in under-doped cuprates. We detail the role of the SU(2) symmetry in controlling the phase diagram of the cuprates, in particular how a cascade of phase transitions explains the arising of the pseudogap, superconducting and charge modulation phases seen at low temperature. We specify the structure of the charge modulations inside the vortex core below T _c, as well as in a wide temperature region above T _c, which is a signature of the skyrmion topological structure. We argue that the underlying SU(2) symmetry is the main structure controlling the emergent complexity of excitations at the pseudogap scale T ^*. The theory yields a gapping of a large part of the anti-nodal region of the Brillouin zone, along with q  =  0 phase transitions, of both nematic and loop currents characters.

Quantum oscillations in a biaxial pair density wave state

At higher temperatures, and in high magnetic fields at low temperatures, an extraordinary and unidentified electronic phase, dubbed the “pseudogap,” appears in lightly hole-doped cuprates. At high fields and low temperatures, the pseudogap phase supports quantum oscillations that have resisted quantitative theoretical explanation since their discovery, and it also exhibits an unidentified density wave state. Although the latter has typically been referred to as a “charge” density wave because of the observed charge density modulations, theory indicates that it could actually be an electron-pair density wave (PDW) state. Here we demonstrate theoretically that a biaxial PDW state with 8a periodicity may provide a compelling quantitative explanation for much of the observed quantum oscillation data.

There has been growing speculation that a pair density wave state is a key component of the phenomenology of the pseudogap phase in the cuprates. Recently, direct evidence for such a state has emerged from an analysis of scanning tunneling microscopy data in halos around the vortex cores. By extrapolation, these vortex halos would then overlap at a magnetic-field scale where quantum oscillations have been observed. Here, we show that a biaxial pair density wave state gives a unique description of the quantum oscillation data, bolstering the case that the pseudogap phase in the cuprates may be a pair density wave state.

A tale of two metals: contrasting criticalities in the pnictides and hole-doped cuprates

The iron-based high temperature superconductors share a number of similarities with their copper-based counterparts, such as reduced dimensionality, proximity to states of competing order, and a critical role for 3d electron orbitals. Their respective temperature-doping phase diagrams also contain certain commonalities that have led to claims that the metallic and superconducting (SC) properties of both families are governed by their proximity to a quantum critical point (QCP) located inside the SC dome. In this review, we critically examine these claims and highlight significant differences in the bulk physical properties of both systems. While there is now a large body of evidence supporting the presence of a (magnetic) QCP in the iron pnictides, the situation in the cuprates is much less apparent, at least for the end point of the pseudogap phase. We argue that the opening of the normal state pseudogap in cuprates, so often tied to a putative QCP, arises from a momentum-dependent breakdown of quasiparticle coherence that sets in at much higher doping levels but which is driven by the proximity to the Mott insulating state at half filling. Finally, we present a new scenario for the cuprates in which this loss of quasiparticle integrity and its evolution with momentum, temperature and doping plays a key role in shaping the resultant phase diagram.

Collective Dynamics and Strong Pinning near the Onset of Charge Order in La_{1.48}Nd_{0.4}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4}

The dynamics of charge-ordered states is one of the key issues in underdoped cuprate high-temperature superconductors, but static short-range charge-order (CO) domains have been detected in almost all cuprates. We probe the dynamics across the CO (and structural) transition in La_{1.48}Nd_{0.4}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4} by measuring nonequilibrium charge transport, or resistance R as the system responds to a change in temperature and to an applied magnetic field. We find evidence for metastable states, collective behavior, and criticality. The collective dynamics in the critical regime indicates strong pinning by disorder. Surprisingly, nonequilibrium effects, such as avalanches in R, are revealed only when the critical region is approached from the charge-ordered phase. Our results on La_{1.48}Nd_{0.4}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4} provide the long-sought evidence for the fluctuating order across the CO transition, and also set important constraints on theories of dynamic stripes.

Spin susceptibility of charge-ordered YBa2Cu3O y across the upper critical field

The value of the upper critical field H_c2, a fundamental characteristic of the superconducting state, has been subject to strong controversy in high-T_c copper oxides. Since the issue has been tackled almost exclusively by macroscopic techniques so far, there is a clear need for local-probe measurements. Here, we use ¹⁷O NMR to measure the spin susceptibility [Formula: see text] of the CuO₂ planes at low temperature in charge-ordered YBa₂Cu₃O _y We find that [Formula: see text] increases (most likely linearly) with magnetic field H and saturates above field values ranging from 20 T to 40 T. This result is consistent with the lowest H_c2 values claimed previously and with the interpretation that the charge density wave (CDW) reduces H_c2 in underdoped YBa₂Cu₃O _y Furthermore, the absence of marked deviation in [Formula: see text] at the onset of long-range CDW order indicates that this [Formula: see text] reduction and the Fermi-surface reconstruction are primarily rooted in the short-range CDW order already present in zero field, not in the field-induced long-range CDW order. Above [Formula: see text], the relatively low values of [Formula: see text] at [Formula: see text] K show that the pseudogap is a ground-state property, independent of the superconducting gap.

Charge-density-wave order takes over antiferromagnetism in Bi2Sr2-x La x CuO6 superconductors

Superconductivity appears in the cuprates when a spin order is destroyed, while the role of charge is less known. Recently, charge density wave (CDW) was found below the superconducting dome in YBa₂Cu₃O_y when a high magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the CuO₂ plane, which was suggested to arise from incipient CDW in the vortex cores that becomes overlapped. Here by ⁶³Cu-nuclear magnetic resonance, we report the discovery of CDW induced by an in-plane field, setting in above the dome in single-layered Bi₂Sr_2−xLa_xCuO₆. The onset temperature T_CDW takes over the antiferromagnetic order temperature T_N beyond a critical doping level at which superconductivity starts to emerge, and scales with the pseudogap temperature T*. These results provide important insights into the relationship between spin order, CDW and the pseudogap, and their connections to high-temperature superconductivity.

Whilst superconductivity usually appears when magnetic order is suppressed, the role of charge is less known. Here, Kawasaki et al. report a charge density wave (CDW) above the superconducting transition induced by an in-plane magnetic field in Bi₂Sr_2-xLa_xCuO₆, with the CDW onset temperature scaling with the pseudogap temperature.

Dimensional Crossover of Charge-Density Wave Correlations in the Cuprates

Short-range charge-density wave correlations are ubiquitous in underdoped cuprates. They are largely confined to the copper-oxygen planes and typically oscillate out of phase from one unit cell to the next in the c direction. Recently, it was found that a considerably longer-range charge-density wave order develops in YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x} above a sharply defined crossover magnetic field. This order is more three-dimensional and is in-phase along the c axis. Here, we show that such behavior is a consequence of the conflicting ordering tendencies induced by the disorder potential and the Coulomb interaction, where the magnetic field acts to tip the scales from the former to the latter. We base our conclusion on analytic large-N analysis and Monte Carlo simulations of a nonlinear sigma model of competing superconducting and charge-density wave orders. Our results are in agreement with the observed phenomenology in the cuprates, and we discuss their implications to other members of this family, which have not been measured yet at high magnetic fields.

Local particle-hole pair excitations by SU(2) symmetry fluctuations

Understanding the pseudo-gap phase which opens in the under-doped regime of cuprate superconductors is one of the most enduring challenges of the physics of these compounds. A depletion in the electronic density of states is observed, which is gapping out part of the Fermi surface, leading to the formation of mysterious lines of massless excitations- the Fermi arcs. Here we give a new theoretical account of the physics of the pseudo-gap phase in terms of the emergence of local patches of particle-hole pairs generated by SU(2) symmetry fluctuations. The proliferation of these local patches accounts naturally for the robustness of the pseudo-gap phase to disturbances like disorder or magnetic field and is shown to gap out part of the Fermi surface, leading to the formation of the Fermi arcs. Most noticeably, we show that these patches induce a modulated charge distribution on the Oxygen atoms, in remarkable agreement with recent X-ray and STM observations.

Quasiparticle Scattering off Defects and Possible Bound States in Charge-Ordered YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}

We report the NMR observation of a skewed distribution of ^{17}O Knight shifts when a magnetic field quenches superconductivity and induces long-range charge-density-wave (CDW) order in YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}. This distribution is explained by an inhomogeneous pattern of the local density of states N(E_{F}) arising from quasiparticle scattering off, yet unidentified, defects in the CDW state. We argue that the effect is most likely related to the formation of quasiparticle bound states, as is known to occur, under specific circumstances, in some metals and superconductors (but not in the CDW state, in general, except for very few cases in 1D materials). These observations should provide insight into the microscopic nature of the CDW, especially regarding the reconstructed band structure and the sensitivity to disorder.

Ideal charge-density-wave order in the high-field state of superconducting YBCO

The existence of charge-density-wave (CDW) correlations in cuprate superconductors has now been established. However, the nature of the CDW ground state has remained uncertain because disorder and the presence of superconductivity typically limit the CDW correlation lengths to only a dozen unit cells or less. Here we explore the field-induced 3D CDW correlations in extremely pure detwinned crystals of YBa₂Cu₃O₂ (YBCO) ortho-II and ortho-VIII at magnetic fields in excess of the resistive upper critical field ([Formula: see text]) where superconductivity is heavily suppressed. We observe that the 3D CDW is unidirectional and possesses a long in-plane correlation length as well as significant correlations between neighboring CuO₂ planes. It is significant that we observe only a single sharply defined transition at a critical field proportional to [Formula: see text], given that the field range used in this investigation overlaps with other high-field experiments including quantum oscillation measurements. The correlation volume is at least two to three orders of magnitude larger than that of the zero-field CDW. This is by far the largest CDW correlation volume observed in any cuprate crystal and so is presumably representative of the high-field ground state of an "ideal" disorder-free cuprate.

Fermi liquid behavior of the in-plane resistivity in the pseudogap state of YBa2Cu4O8

Our knowledge of the ground state of underdoped hole-doped cuprates has evolved considerably over the last few years. There is now compelling evidence that, inside the pseudogap phase, charge order breaks translational symmetry leading to a reconstructed Fermi surface made of small pockets. Quantum oscillations [Doiron-Leyraud N, et al. (2007) Nature 447(7144):565-568], optical conductivity [Mirzaei SI, et al. (2013) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 110(15):5774-5778], and the validity of Wiedemann-Franz law [Grissonnache G, et al. (2016) Phys Rev B 93:064513] point to a Fermi liquid regime at low temperature in the underdoped regime. However, the observation of a quadratic temperature dependence in the electrical resistivity at low temperatures, the hallmark of a Fermi liquid regime, is still missing. Here, we report magnetoresistance measurements in the magnetic-field-induced normal state of underdoped YBa₂Cu₄O₈ that are consistent with a T² resistivity extending down to 1.5 K. The magnitude of the T² coefficient, however, is much smaller than expected for a single pocket of the mass and size observed in quantum oscillations, implying that the reconstructed Fermi surface must consist of at least one additional pocket.

Fermi Surface Reconstruction and Drop in the Hall Number due to Spiral Antiferromagnetism in High-T_{c} Cuprates

We show that a Fermi surface reconstruction due to spiral antiferromagnetic order may explain the rapid change in the Hall number as recently observed near optimal doping in cuprate superconductors [Badoux et al., Nature (London) 531, 210 (2016)]. The single-particle spectral function in the spiral state exhibits hole pockets which look like Fermi arcs due to a strong momentum dependence of the spectral weight. Adding charge-density wave order further reduces the Fermi surface to a single electron pocket. We propose quantum oscillation measurements to distinguish between commensurate and spiral antiferromagnetic order. Similar results apply to certain metals in which topological order replaces antiferromagnetic order.

Magnetic phase diagram of underdoped YBa2Cu3O y inferred from torque magnetization and thermal conductivity

Strong evidence for charge-density correlation in the underdoped phase of the cuprate YBa₂Cu₃O _y was obtained by NMR and resonant X-ray scattering. The fluctuations were found to be enhanced in strong magnetic fields. Recently, 3D charge-density-wave (CDW) formation with long-range order (LRO) was observed by X-ray diffraction in [Formula: see text] 15 T. To elucidate how the CDW transition impacts the pair condensate, we have used torque magnetization to 45 T and thermal conductivity [Formula: see text] to construct the magnetic phase diagram in untwinned crystals with hole density p = 0.11. We show that the 3D CDW transitions appear as sharp features in the susceptibility and [Formula: see text] at the fields [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], which define phase boundaries in agreement with spectroscopic techniques. From measurements of the melting field [Formula: see text] of the vortex solid, we obtain evidence for two vortex solid states below 8 K. At 0.5 K, the pair condensate appears to adjust to the 3D CDW by a sharp transition at 24 T between two vortex solids with very different shear moduli. At even higher H (41 T), the second vortex solid melts to a vortex liquid which survives to fields well above 41 T. de Haas-van Alphen oscillations appear at fields 24-28 T, below the lower bound for the upper critical field [Formula: see text].

The amplitudes and the structure of the charge density wave in YBCO

We find unknown s- and d-wave amplitudes of the recently discovered charge density wave (CDW) in underdoped cuprates. To do so we perform a combined analysis of experimental data for ortho-II YBa₂Cu₃O_y. The analysis includes data on nuclear magnetic resonance, resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, and hard X-ray diffraction. The amplitude of doping modulation found in our analysis is 3.5 · 10⁻³ in a low magnetic field and T = 60 K, the amplitude is 6.5 · 10⁻³ in a magnetic field of 30T and T = 1.3 K. The values are in units of elementary charge per unit cell of a CuO₂ plane. We show that the data rule out a checkerboard pattern, and we also show that the data might rule out mechanisms of the CDW which do not include phonons.

Charge orders, magnetism and pairings in the cuprate superconductors

We review the recent developments in the field of cuprate superconductors with special focus on the recently observed charge order in the underdoped compounds. We introduce new theoretical developments following the study of the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in two dimensions, in which preemptive orders in both charge and superconducting (SC) sectors emerge, that are in turn related by an SU(2) symmetry. We consider the implications of this proliferation of orders in the underdoped region, and provide a study of the type of fluctuations which characterize the SU(2) symmetry. We identify an intermediate energy scale where the SC fluctuations are dominant and argue that they are unstable towards the formation of a resonant excitonic state at the pseudogap temperature T (*). We discuss the implications of this scenario for a few key experiments.

Bipartite electronic superstructures in the vortex core of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ

The central issue in the physics of cuprate superconductivity is the mutual relationship among superconductivity, pseudogap and broken-spatial-symmetry states. A magnetic field B suppresses superconductivity, providing an opportunity to investigate the competition among these states. Although various B-induced electronic superstructures have been reported, their energy, spatial and momentum-space structures are unclear. Here, we show using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunnelling microscopy on Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8+δ that there are two distinct B-induced electronic superstructures, both being localized in the vortex core but appearing at different energies. In the low-energy range where the nodal Bogoliubov quasiparticles are well-defined, we observe the so-called vortex checkerboard that we identify as the B-enhanced quasiparticle interference pattern. By contrast, in the high-energy region where the pseudogap develops, the broken-spatial-symmetry patterns that pre-exist at B=0 T is locally enhanced in the vortex core. This evidences the competition between superconductivity and the broken-spatial-symmetry state that is associated with the pseudogap.

Field-induced electronic structures with spatial, momentum and energy resolution reveal the nature of interaction among multiple phases in correlated materials. Here, Machida et al. report two magnetic field-induced electronic superstructures in Bi₂Se₂CaCu₂O_8+δ, evidencing competition between superconductivity and emerging states.

Magnetic field controlled charge density wave coupling in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x

The application of magnetic fields to layered cuprates suppresses their high-temperature superconducting behaviour and reveals competing ground states. In widely studied underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO), the microscopic nature of field-induced electronic and structural changes at low temperatures remains unclear. Here we report an X-ray study of the high-field charge density wave (CDW) in YBCO. For hole dopings ∼0.123, we find that a field (B∼10 T) induces additional CDW correlations along the CuO chain (b-direction) only, leading to a three-dimensional (3D) ordered state along this direction at B∼15 T. The CDW signal along the a-direction is also enhanced by field, but does not develop an additional pattern of correlations. Magnetic field modifies the coupling between the CuO2 bilayers in the YBCO structure, and causes the sudden appearance of the 3D CDW order. The mirror symmetry of individual bilayers is broken by the CDW at low and high fields, allowing Fermi surface reconstruction, as recently suggested.

Hall effect in quantum critical charge-cluster glass

Upon doping, cuprates undergo a quantum phase transition from an insulator to a d-wave superconductor. The nature of this transition and of the insulating state is vividly debated. Here, we study the Hall effect in La2-xSrxCuO4(LSCO) samples doped near the quantum critical point atx∼ 0.06. Dramatic fluctuations in the Hall resistance appear belowTCG∼ 1.5 K and increase as the sample is cooled down further, signaling quantum critical behavior. We explore the doping dependence of this effect in detail, by studying a combinatorial LSCO library in which the Sr content is varied in extremely fine steps,Δx∼ 0.00008. We observe that quantum charge fluctuations wash out when superconductivity emerges but can be restored when the latter is suppressed by applying a magnetic field, showing that the two instabilities compete for the ground state.

The Time-resolved and Extreme-conditions XAS (TEXAS) facility at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility: the energy-dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy beamline ID24

The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility has recently made available to the user community a facility totally dedicated to Time-resolved and Extreme-conditions X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy--TEXAS. Based on an upgrade of the former energy-dispersive XAS beamline ID24, it provides a unique experimental tool combining unprecedented brilliance (up to 10(14) photons s(-1) on a 4 µm × 4 µm FWHM spot) and detection speed for a full EXAFS spectrum (100 ps per spectrum). The science mission includes studies of processes down to the nanosecond timescale, and investigations of matter at extreme pressure (500 GPa), temperature (10000 K) and magnetic field (30 T). The core activities of the beamline are centered on new experiments dedicated to the investigation of extreme states of matter that can be maintained only for very short periods of time. Here the infrastructure, optical scheme, detection systems and sample environments used to enable the mission-critical performance are described, and examples of first results on the investigation of the electronic and local structure in melts at pressure and temperature conditions relevant to the Earth's interior and in laser-shocked matter are given.

Three-dimensional charge density wave order in YBa2Cu3O6.67 at high magnetic fields

Charge density wave (CDW) correlations have been shown to universally exist in cuprate superconductors. However, their nature at high fields inferred from nuclear magnetic resonance is distinct from that measured with x-ray scattering at zero and low fields. We combined a pulsed magnet with an x-ray free-electron laser to characterize the CDW in YBa2Cu3O6.67 via x-ray scattering in fields of up to 28 tesla. While the zero-field CDW order, which develops at temperatures below ~150 kelvin, is essentially two dimensional, at lower temperature and beyond 15 tesla, another three-dimensionally ordered CDW emerges. The field-induced CDW appears around the zero-field superconducting transition temperature; in contrast, the incommensurate in-plane ordering vector is field-independent. This implies that the two forms of CDW and high-temperature superconductivity are intimately linked.

Signatures of new d-wave vortex physics in overdoped Tl2Ba2CuO(6+x) revealed by TF-µ(+)SR

The spontaneous expulsion of applied magnetic field, the Meissner effect, is a defining feature of superconductors; in Type-II superconductors above the lower critical field, this screening takes the form of a lattice of magnetic flux vortices. Using implanted spin-1/2 positive muons, one can measure the vortex lattice field distribution through the spin precession and deduce key parameters of the superconducting ground state, and thereby fundamental properties of the superconducting pairing. Muon spin rotation/relaxation (µSR) experiments have indeed revealed much interesting physics in the underdoped cuprates, where superconductivity is closely related to, or coexistent with, disordered or fluctuating magnetic and charge excitations. Such complications should be absent in overdoped cuprates, which are believed to exhibit conventional Fermi liquid behaviour. These first transverse field (TF)-µ⁺SR experiments on heavily-overdoped single crystals reveal a superfluid density exhibiting a clear inflection point near 0.5T_c , with a striking doping-independent scaling. This reflects hitherto unrecognized physics intrinsic to d-wave vortices, evidently generic to the cuprates, and may offer fundamentally new insights into their still-mysterious superconductivity.

Calorimetric determination of the magnetic phase diagram of underdoped ortho II YBa2Cu3O6.54 single crystals

The recent discovery of a charge order in underdoped YBa₂Cu₃O_y raised the question of the interplay between superconductivity and this competing phase. Understanding the normal state of high-temperature superconductors is now an essential step towards the description of the pairing mechanism in those materials and determining the upper critical field is therefore of fundamental importance. We present here a calorimetric determination of the field–temperature phase diagram in underdoped YBa₂Cu₃O_y single crystals. We show that the specific heat saturates in high magnetic fields. This saturation is consistent with a normal state without any significant superconducting contribution and a total Sommerfeld coefficient γ_N∼6.5±1.5 mJ mol⁻¹ K⁻² putting strong constraints on the theoretical models for the Fermi surface reconstruction.

The presence of a charge order state in underdoped YBCO raises the question of the interplay between this phase and the superconducting one. Here, the authors characterize this material's phase diagram through specific heat and magnetic measurements, providing strong constrains to theoretical models.

Quantum dimer model for the pseudogap metal

We propose a quantum dimer model for the metallic state of the hole-doped cuprates at low hole density, p. The Hilbert space is spanned by spinless, neutral, bosonic dimers and spin S = 1/2, charge +e fermionic dimers. The model realizes a "fractionalized Fermi liquid" with no symmetry breaking and small hole pocket Fermi surfaces enclosing a total area determined by p. Exact diagonalization, on lattices of sizes up to 8 × 8, shows anisotropic quasiparticle residue around the pocket Fermi surfaces. We discuss the relationship to experiments.

Spin-stripe phase in a frustrated zigzag spin-1/2 chain

Motifs of periodic modulations are encountered in a variety of natural systems, where at least two rival states are present. In strongly correlated electron systems, such behaviour has typically been associated with competition between short- and long-range interactions, for example, between exchange and dipole-dipole interactions in the case of ferromagnetic thin films. Here we show that spin-stripe textures may develop also in antiferromagnets, where long-range dipole-dipole magnetic interactions are absent. A comprehensive analysis of magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, specific heat and neutron diffraction measurements unveils β-TeVO4 as a nearly perfect realization of a frustrated (zigzag) ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain. Notably, a narrow spin-stripe phase develops at elevated magnetic fields due to weak frustrated short-range interchain exchange interactions, possibly assisted by the symmetry-allowed electric polarization. This concept provides an alternative route for the stripe formation in strongly correlated electron systems and may help understanding of other widespread, yet still elusive, stripe-related phenomena.

Specific heat and sound velocity at the relevant competing phase of high-temperature superconductors

Recent highly accurate sound velocity measurements reveal a phase transition to a competing phase in YBa2Cu3O6+δ that is not identified in available specific heat measurements. We show that this signature is consistent with the universality class of the loop current-ordered state when the free-energy reduction is similar to the superconducting condensation energy, due to the anomalous fluctuation region of such a transition. We also compare the measured specific heat with some usual types of transitions, which are observed at lower temperatures in some cuprates, and find that the upper limit of the energy reduction due to them is about 1/40th the superconducting condensation energy.

Incipient charge order observed by NMR in the normal state of YBa2Cu3Oy

The pseudogap regime of high-temperature cuprates harbours diverse manifestations of electronic ordering whose exact nature and universality remain debated. Here, we show that the short-ranged charge order recently reported in the normal state of YBa2Cu3Oy corresponds to a truly static modulation of the charge density. We also show that this modulation impacts on most electronic properties, that it appears jointly with intra-unit-cell nematic, but not magnetic, order, and that it exhibits differences with the charge density wave observed at lower temperatures in high magnetic fields. These observations prove mostly universal, they place new constraints on the origin of the charge density wave and they reveal that the charge modulation is pinned by native defects. Similarities with results in layered metals such as NbSe2, in which defects nucleate halos of incipient charge density wave at temperatures above the ordering transition, raise the possibility that order-parameter fluctuations, but no static order, would be observed in the normal state of most cuprates if disorder were absent.

Connecting high-field quantum oscillations to zero-field electron spectral functions in the underdoped cuprates

The nature of the pseudogap regime of cuprate superconductors at low hole density remains unresolved. It has a number of seemingly distinct experimental signatures: a suppression of the paramagnetic spin susceptibility at high temperatures, low-energy electronic excitations that extend over arcs in the Brillouin zone, X-ray detection of charge-density wave order at intermediate temperatures and quantum oscillations at high magnetic fields and low temperatures. Here we show that a model of competing charge-density wave and superconducting orders provides a unified description of the intermediate and low-temperature regimes. We treat quantum oscillations at high field beyond semiclassical approximations, and find clear and robust signatures of an electron pocket compatible with existing observations; we also predict oscillations due to additional hole pockets. In the zero-field and intermediate temperature regime, we compute the electronic spectrum in the presence of thermally fluctuating charge-density and superconducting orders. Our results are compatible with experimental trends.

Pairing and the phase diagram of the normal coherence length ξN(T, x) above Tc of La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 thin films probed by the Josephson effect

The long range proximity effect in high-T_c c-axis Josephson junctions with a high-T_c barrier of lower T_c is still a puzzling phenomenon. It leads to supercurrents in junctions with much thicker barriers than would be allowed by the conventional proximity effect. Here we measured the T − x (Temperature-doping level) phase diagram of the barrier coherence length ξ_N(T, x), and found an enhancement of ξ_N at moderate under-doping and high temperatures. This indicates that a possible origin of the long range proximity effect in the cuprate barrier is the conjectured pre-formed pairs in the pseudogap regime, which increase the length scale over which superconducting correlations survive in the seemingly normal barrier. In more details, we measured the supercurrents I_c of Superconducting - Normal - Superconducting SNS c-axis junctions, where S was optimally doped Y Ba₂Cu₃O_7−δ below T_c (90 K) and N was La_2−xSr_xCuO₄ above its T_c (<25 K) but in the pseudogap regime. From the exponential decay of I_c(T) ∝ exp[−d/ξ_N(T)], where d is the barrier thickness, the ξ_N(T) values were extracted. By repeating these measurements for different barrier doping levels x, the whole phase diagram of ξ_N(T, x) was obtained.

Quenched disorder and vestigial nematicity in the pseudogap regime of the cuprates

The cuprate high-temperature superconductors have been the focus of unprecedentedly intense and sustained study not only because of their high superconducting transition temperatures, but also because they represent the most exquisitely investigated examples of highly correlated electronic materials. In particular, the pseudogap regime of the phase diagram exhibits a variety of mysterious emergent behaviors. In the last few years, evidence from NMR and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies, as well as from a new generation of X-ray scattering experiments, has accumulated, indicating that a general tendency to short-range-correlated incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) order is "intertwined" with the superconductivity in this regime. Additionally, transport, STM, neutron-scattering, and optical experiments have produced evidence--not yet entirely understood--of the existence of an associated pattern of long-range-ordered point-group symmetry breaking with an electron-nematic character. We have carried out a theoretical analysis of the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson effective field theory of a classical incommensurate CDW in the presence of weak quenched disorder. Although the possibilities of a sharp phase transition and long-range CDW order are precluded in such systems, we show that any discrete symmetry-breaking aspect of the charge order--nematicity in the case of the unidirectional (stripe) CDW we consider explicitly--generically survives up to a nonzero critical disorder strength. Such "vestigial order," which is subject to unambiguous macroscopic detection, can serve as an avatar of what would be CDW order in the ideal, zero disorder limit. Various recent experiments in the pseudogap regime of the hole-doped cuprates are readily interpreted in light of these results.

Angular fluctuations of a multicomponent order describe the pseudogap of YBa2Cu3O(6+x)

The hole-doped cuprate high-temperature superconductors enter the pseudogap regime as their superconducting critical temperature, Tc, falls with decreasing hole density. Recent x-ray scattering experiments in YBa2Cu3O(6+x) observe incommensurate charge-density wave fluctuations whose strength rises gradually over a wide temperature range above Tc, but then decreases as the temperature is lowered below Tc. We propose a theory in which the superconducting and charge-density wave orders exhibit angular fluctuations in a six-dimensional space. The theory provides a natural quantitative fit to the x-ray data and can be a basis for understanding other characteristics of the pseudogap.

Coexistence of cluster spin glass and superconductivity in Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 for 0.060≤x≤0.071

We present 75As nuclear magnetic resonance data from measurements of a series of Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 crystals with 0.00≤x≤0.075 that reveals the coexistence of frozen antiferromagnetic domains and superconductivity for 0.060≤x≤0.071. Although bulk probes reveal no long range antiferromagnetic order beyond x=0.06, we find that the local spin dynamics reveal no qualitative change across this transition. The characteristic domain sizes vary by more than an order of magnitude, reaching a maximum variation at x=0.06. This inhomogeneous glassy dynamics may be an intrinsic response to the competition between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in this system.
