A toolbox of oligopeptide-modified polymers for tailored elastomers

Hyperbranched Vitrimer for Ultrahigh Energy Dissipation

Polymers are ideally utilized as damping materials due to the high internal friction of molecular chains, enabling effective suppression of vibrations and noises in various fields. Current strategies rely on broadening the glass transition region or introducing additional relaxation components to enhance the energy dissipation capacity of polymeric damping materials. However, it remains a significant challenge to achieve high damping efficiency through structural control while maintaining dynamic characteristics. In this work, we propose a new strategy to develop hyperbranched vitrimers (HBVs) containing dense pendant chains and loose dynamic crosslinked networks. A novel yet weak dynamic transesterification between the carboxyl and boronic acid ester was confirmed and used to prepare HBVs based on poly (hexyl methacrylate-2-(4-ethenylphenyl)-5,5-dimethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborinane) P(HMA-co-ViCL) copolymers. TheA B n ${{AB}_{n}}$ -type of macromonomers, the crosslinking points formed by the dynamic covalent connection via the associative exchange, and the weak yet dynamic exchange reaction are the three keys to developing high-performance HBV damping materials. We found that P(HMA-co-ViCL) 20k-40-60 HBV exhibited ultrahigh energy-dissipation performance over a broad frequency and temperature range, attributed to the synergistic effect of dense pendant chains and weak dynamic covalent crosslinks. This unique design concept will provide a general approach to developing advanced damping materials.

Elastomer Composites with High Damping and Low Thermal Resistance via Hierarchical Interactions and Regulating Filler

Modern microelectronics and emerging technologies such as wearable electronics and soft robotics require elastomers to integrate high damping with low thermal resistance to avoid damage caused by vibrations and heat accumulation. However, the strong coupling between storage modulus and loss factor makes it generally challenging to simultaneously increase both thermal conductance and damping. Here, a strategy of introducing hierarchical interaction and regulating fillers in polybutadiene/spherical aluminum elastomer composites is reported to simultaneously achieve extraordinary damping ability of tan δ > 1.0 and low thermal resistance of 0.15 cm2 K W-1, which surpasses state-of-the-art elastomers and their composites. The enhanced damping is attributed to increased energy dissipation via introducing the hierarchical hydrogen bond interactions in polybutadiene networks and the addition of spherical aluminum, which also functions as a thermally conductive filler to achieve low thermal resistance. As a proof of concept, the polybutadiene/spherical aluminum elastomer composites are used as thermal interface materials, showing effective heat dissipation for electronic devices in vibration scenarios. The combination of outstanding damping performance and extraordinary heat dissipation ability of the elastomer composites may create new opportunities for their applications in electronics.

Confinement of Oligopeptides by Terminally Functionalized Polyisoprene to Improve Their Mechanical Strength, Creep Resistance, and Antifatigue Properties

A small amount of terminal polar phase endows natural rubber (NR) with excellent comprehensive properties superior to those of synthetic isoprene rubber. In this work, the comprehensive properties of synthetic rubber were remarkably improved by introducing a stable terminal nanoconfinement structure by combining terminal hydroxyl groups and pentapeptide molecules noncovalently into the same phases. The results show that the stable terminal phases hardly affect the free chain motion but enhance the entanglement. Under cyclic loading, the terminal polar phases undergo hierarchically structural changes such as reversible dissociation of the weak bonds, phase deformation, and crystalline reorganization, all of which dissipate the stress and are beneficial for high strength and extensibility. At the same time, synthetic rubbers demonstrate much superior fatigue resistance and lower hysteresis relative to NR and maintain comparable dimensional stability. This strategy suggests that the comprehensive properties of elastomers can be regulated and upgraded by facile terminal noncovalent interactions.

Highly Damping and Self-Healable Ionic Elastomer from Dynamic Phase Separation of Sticky Fluorinated Polymers

Shock-induced low-frequency vibration damage is extremely harmful to bionic soft robots and machines that may incur the malfunction of fragile electronic elements. However, current skin-like self-healable ionic elastomers as the artificial sensing and protecting layer still lack the ability to dampen vibrations, due to their almost opposite design for molecular frictions to material's elasticity. Inspired by the two-phase structure of adipose tissue (the natural damping skin layer), here, a highly damping ionic elastomer with energy-dissipating nanophases embedded in an elastic matrix is introduced, which is formed by polymerization-induced dynamic phase separation of sticky fluorinated copolymers in the presence of lithium salts. Such a supramolecular design decouples the elastic and damping functions into two distinct phases, and thus reconciles a few intriguing properties including ionic conductivity, high stretchability, softness, strain-stiffening, elastic recovery, room-temperature self-healability, recyclability, and most importantly, record-high damping capacity at the human motion frequency range (loss factor tan δ > 1 at 0.1-50 Hz). This study opens the door for the artificial syntheses of high-performance damping ionic skins with robust sensing and protective applications in soft electronics and robotics.

Assembly of π-Stacking Helical Peptides into a Porous and Multivariable Proteomimetic Framework

The evolution of proteins from simpler, self-assembled peptides provides a powerful blueprint for the design of complex synthetic materials. Previously, peptide-metal frameworks using short sequences (≤3 residues) have shown great promise as proteomimetic materials that exhibit sophisticated capabilities. However, their development has been hindered due to few variable residues and restricted choice of side-chains that are compatible with metal ions. Herein, we developed a noncovalent strategy featuring π-stacking bipyridyl residues to assemble much longer peptides into crystalline frameworks that tolerate even previously incompatible acidic and basic functionalities and allow an unprecedented level of pore variations. Single-crystal X-ray structures are provided for all variants to guide and validate rational design. These materials exhibit hallmark proteomimetic behaviors such as guest-selective induced fit and assembly of multimetallic units. Significantly, we demonstrate facile optimization of the framework design to substantially increase affinity toward a complex organic molecule.

High-Throughput Peptide Derivatization toward Supramolecular Diversification in Microtiter Plates

The evolution of life on earth eventually leads to the emergence of species with increased complexity and diversity. Similarly, evolutionary chemical space exploration in the laboratory is a key step to pursue the structural and functional diversity of supramolecular systems. Here, we present a powerful tool that enables rapid peptide diversification and employ it to expand the chemical space for supramolecular functions. Central to this strategy is the exploitation of palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions to direct combinatorial synthesis of peptide arrays in microtiter plates under an open atmosphere. Taking advantage of this in situ library design, our results unambiguously deliver a fertile platform for creating a set of intriguing peptide functions including green fluorescent protein-like peptide emitters with chemically encoded emission colors, hierarchical self-assembly into nano-objects, and macroscopic hydrogels. This work also offers opportunities for quickly surveying the diversified peptide arrays and thereby identifying the structural factors that modulate peptide properties.

The Specific Molecular Composition and Structural Arrangement of Eleutherodactylus Coqui Gular Skin Tissue Provide Its High Mechanical Compliance

A male Eleutherodactylus Coqui (EC, a frog) expands and contracts its gular skin to a great extent during mating calls, displaying its extraordinarily compliant organ. There are striking similarities between frog gular skin and the human bladder as both organs expand and contract significantly. While the high extensibility of the urinary bladder is attributed to the unique helical ultrastructure of collagen type III, the mechanism behind the gular skin of EC is unknown. We therefore aim to understand the structure-property relationship of gular skin tissues of EC. Our findings demonstrate that the male EC gular tissue can elongate up to 400%, with an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1.7 MPa. Species without vocal sacs, Xenopus Laevis (XL) and Xenopus Muelleri (XM), elongate only up to 80% and 350% with UTS~6.3 MPa and ~4.5 MPa, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and histological staining further show that EC tissues' collagen fibers exhibit a layer-by-layer arrangement with an uninterrupted, knot-free, and continuous structure. The collagen bundles alternate between a circular and longitudinal shape, suggesting an out-of-plane zig-zag structure, which likely provides the tissue with greater extensibility. In contrast, control species contain a nearly linear collagen structure interrupted by thicker muscle bundles and mucous glands. Meanwhile, in the rat bladder, the collagen is arranged in a helical structure. The bladder-like high extensibility of EC gular skin tissue arises despite it having eight-fold lesser elastin and five times more collagen than the rat bladder. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report the structural and molecular mechanisms behind the high compliance of EC gular skin. We believe that these findings can lead us to develop more compliant biomaterials for applications in regenerative medicine.

Effects of multifunctional cross-linkers on rheology and adhesion of soft nanostructured materials

We investigate the nanostructure, the rheology and the adhesion of soft supramolecular materials elaborated by blending monofunctional and multifunctional poly(isobutene) (PIB) chains. Monofunctional PIB chains (PIBUT) are linear and unentangled polymer chains (M_n ≈ 3 kg mol^-1) functionalized in the middle by a bis-urea interacting moiety, able to self-associate by four hydrogen bonds. Covalent coupling of monofunctional PIB allows us to synthesize longer chains bearing two or three interacting moieties. These chains are then added to monofunctional PIB to prepare blends containing up to 10% of multifunctional PIB (M-PIBUT). The influence of M-PIBUT on the supramolecular nanostructure, which results from the self-assembly of stickers, is studied by Atomic Force Microscopy and Small Angle X-ray Scattering at room temperature. Multifunctional and monofunctional chains are shown to interact with each other to form bundles of rod-like aggregates. The consequences of these interactions on the rheology of the blends were studied by shear tests in the linear and non linear regimes, below and above the order-disorder transition temperature. A pronounced strengthening effect of M-PIBUT is observed at room temperature: the supramolecular blends become more elastic and are more resistant to creep with increasing concentration of M-PIBUT. The effects of M-PIBUT on the nanostructure and the rheology suggest that M-PIBUT, which can link with more than one supramolecular aggregate, plays the role of a physical cross-linker. The impact of these supramolecular cross-linkers on the adhesion of the blends is studied by probe-tack tests and discussed by analyzing the in situ deformation through the debonding images.

Adhesion and non-linear rheology of adhesives with supramolecular crosslinking points

Soft supramolecular materials are promising for the design of innovative and highly tunable adhesives. These materials are composed of polymer chains functionalized by strongly interacting moieties, sometimes called "stickers". In order to systematically investigate the effect of the presence of associative groups on the debonding properties of a supramolecular adhesive, a series of supramolecular model systems has been characterized by probe-tack tests. These model materials, composed of linear and low dispersity poly(butylacrylate) chains functionalized in the middle by a single tri-urea sticker, are able to self-associate by six hydrogen bonds and range in molecular weight (Mn) between 5 and 85 kg mol(-1). The linear rheology and the nanostructure of the same materials (called "PnBA3U") were the object of a previous study. At room temperature, the association of polymers via hydrogen bonds induces the formation of rod-like aggregates structured into bundles for Mn < 40 kg mol(-1) and the behavior of a soft elastic material was observed (G'≪G'' and G'∼ω(0)). For higher Mn materials, the filaments were randomly oriented and the polymers displayed a crossover towards viscous behavior although terminal relaxation was not reached in the experimental frequency window. All these materials show, however, similar adhesive properties characterized by a cohesive mode of failure and low debonding energies (Wadh < 40 J m(-2) for a debonding speed of 100 μm s(-1)). The debonding mechanisms observed during the adhesion tests have been investigated in detail with an Image tools analysis developed by our group. The measure of the projected area covered by cavities growing in the adhesive layer during debonding can be used to estimate the true stress in the walls of the cavities and thus to characterize the in situ large strain deformation of the thin layer during the adhesion test itself. This analysis revealed in particular that the PnBA3U materials with Mn < 40 kg mol(-1) soften very markedly at large deformation like yield stress fluids, explaining the low adhesion energies measured for these viscoelastic gels.

Supramolecular polymer networks: hydrogels and bulk materials

Supramolecular polymer networks are materials crosslinked by reversible supramolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonding or electrostatic interactions. Supramolecular materials show very interesting and useful properties resulting from their dynamic nature, such as self-healing, stimuli-responsiveness and adaptability. Here we will discuss recent progress in polymer-based supramolecular networks for the formation of hydrogels and bulk materials.

Biomimetic Self-Templated Hierarchical Structures of Collagen-Like Peptide Amphiphiles

Developing hierarchically structured biomaterials with tunable chemical and physical properties like those found in nature is critically important to regenerative medicine and studies on tissue morphogenesis. Despite advances in materials synthesis and assembly processes, our ability to control hierarchical assembly using fibrillar biomolecules remains limited. Here, we developed a bioinspired approach to create collagen-like materials through directed evolutionary screening and directed self-assembly. We first synthesized peptide amphiphiles by coupling phage display-identified collagen-like peptides to long-chain fatty acids. We then assembled the amphiphiles into diverse, hierarchically organized, nanofibrous structures using directed self-assembly based on liquid crystal flow and its controlled deposition. The resulting structures sustained and directed the growth of bone cells and hydroxyapatite biominerals. We believe these self-assembling collagen-like amphiphiles could prove useful in the structural design of tissue regenerating materials.
