Crustal melting in orogenic belts revealed by eclogite thermal properties

Partial melting in the continental crust may play a critical role on the behavior of continents during collision. However, the occurrence of partial melt in orogenic continental crust is not well understood. Since the temperature of the orogen is controlled by the thermal properties of constituent rocks, we measured the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of eclogite, the most important ultrahigh pressure metamorphic rocks, as a function of pressure, temperature, composition, and water content, and simulated the thermal structure of the Sulu and Himalaya-Tibet orogens in eastern and southwestern China, respectively. Our results show that the temperature at ~30-km depth beneath the orogens reaches the solidus of wet granite and phengite (~940 K), therefore, the partial melting in the orogenic continental crust is well explained. The melt may facilitate the exhumation of subducted crust, produce the low seismic-velocity zone, and cause the high-conductivity anomaly in the shallow depth of orogenic belts.

By measuring the thermal properties of eclogite at high pressures, the authors found that temperature of orogenic continental crust is sufficient to melt granite and phengite, leading to low-velocity and high-conductivity anomalies in orogenic belts.

A 3D Predictive Method for Deep-Seated Gold Deposits in the Northwest Jiaodong Peninsula and Predicted Results of Main Metallogenic Belts

With the rapid depletion of mineral resources, deep prospecting is becoming a frontier field in international geological exploration. The prediction of deep mineral resources is the premise and foundation of deep prospecting. However, conventional metallogenic predictive methods, which are mainly based on surface geophysical, geochemical, and remote sensing data and geological information, are no longer suitable for deep metallogenic prediction due to the large burial depth of deep-seated deposits. Consequently, 3D metallogenic prediction becomes a critical method for delineating deep prospecting target areas. As a world-class giant gold metallogenic province, the Jiaodong Peninsula is at the forefront in China in terms of deep prospecting achievements and exploration depth. Therefore, it has unique conditions for 3D metallogenic prediction and plays an important exemplary role in promoting the development of global deep prospecting. This study briefly introduced the method, bases, and results of the 3D metallogenic prediction in the northwest Jiaodong Peninsula and then established 3D geological models of gold concentration areas in the northwest Jiaodong Peninsula using drilling combined with geophysics. Since gold deposits in the northwest Jiaodong Peninsula are often controlled by faulting in the 3D space, this study proposed a method for predicting deep prospecting target areas based on a stepped metallogenic model and a method for predicting the deep resource potential of gold deposits based on the shallow resources of ore-controlling faults. Multiple characteristic variables were extracted from the 3D geological models of the gold concentration areas, including the buffer zone and dip angle of faults, the changing rate of fault dip angle, and the equidistant distribution of orebodies. Using these characteristic variables, five deep prospecting target areas in the Jiaojia and Sanshandao faults were predicted. Moreover, based on the proven gold resources at an elevation of −2000 m and above, the total gold resources of the Sanshandao, Jiaojia, and Zhaoping ore-controlling faults at an elevation of −5000–−2000 m were predicted to be approximately 3377–6490 t of Au. Therefore, it is believed that the total gold resources in the Jiaodong Peninsula are expected to exceed 10,000 t. These new predicted results suggest that the northwest Jiaodong Peninsula has huge potential for the resources of deep gold deposits, laying the foundation for further deep prospecting.

Ultrahigh-Pressure Metamorphism and P-T Path of Xiaoxinzhuang Eclogites from the Southern Sulu Orogenic Belt, Eastern China, Based on Phase Equilibria Modelling

Three types of eclogites were identified in the Xiaoxinzhuang area in the northern Sulu ultrahigh pressure (UHP) terrene based on their petrographic, compositional characteristics and locations. They are composed of garnet, omphacite, amphibole, epidote, phengite, quartz/coesite, rutile, apatite, ilmenite and kyanite. Garnet in eclogite exhibits weak compositional zoning, which shows an increase in Xgr and a decrease in Xpy from core to mantle, and a decrease in Xgr and a slight increase in Xpy from mantle to rim. Phengite inclusions in garnet show higher Si, up to 3.424 p.f.u., than those in the matrix. Pseudosections calculated using THERMOCALC in the NCKFMASHTO system for three representative samples record three stages of metamorphism: (I) prograde stage, (II) post- Pmax decompression and heating to the Tmax stage and (III) retrograde stage. Stage-I was recorded in garnet cores with mineral assemblage of garnet + omphacite ± amphibole ± lawsonite + phengite + quartz + rutile, and the P-T condition is constrained at 23.5–26.4 kbar and 623–655 °C. The Pmax, 41.5 kbar at 801 °C, is revealed from garnet enclosed by coarse-grained garnet with the mineral assemblage of garnet + omphacite + phengite + coesite + rutile. Stage-II produced garnet rim with mineral assemblage of garnet + omphacite + amphibole + quartz + rutile + metabasite melt, which constrained the P-T conditions of 21.4–23.0 kbar and 869–924 °C. Stage-III, recorded by unzoned garnet grain with the mineral assemblage of garnet + omphacite + amphibole + ilmenite + rutile + metabasite melt, constrained P–T conditions of 13.5–16.4 kbar and 813–852 °C. The data suggest that the rocks in the Xiaoxinzhuang area were subducted to a depth of over 135 km and underwent an UHP metamorphism. The P-T-t path revealed by the Xiaoxinzhuang eclogites is different from those in other areas of the Sulu UHP terrane, suggesting that they represent different rock slices during the subduction and exhumations.

Continental versus oceanic subduction zones

Subduction zones are tectonic expressions of convergent plate margins, where crustal rocks descend into and interact with the overlying mantle wedge. They are the geodynamic system that produces mafic arc volcanics above oceanic subduction zones but high- to ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks in continental subduction zones. While the metamorphic rocks provide petrological records of orogenic processes when descending crustal rocks undergo dehydration and anataxis at forearc to subarc depths beneath the mantle wedge, the arc volcanics provide geochemical records of the mass transfer from the subducting slab to the mantle wedge in this period though the mantle wedge becomes partially melted at a later time. Whereas the mantle wedge overlying the subducting oceanic slab is of asthenospheric origin, that overlying the descending continental slab is of lithospheric origin, being ancient beneath cratons but juvenile beneath marginal arcs. In either case, the mantle wedge base is cooled down during the slab–wedge coupled subduction. Metamorphic dehydration is prominent during subduction of crustal rocks, giving rise to aqueous solutions that are enriched in fluid-mobile incompatible elements. Once the subducting slab is decoupled from the mantle wedge, the slab–mantle interface is heated by lateral incursion of the asthenospheric mantle to allow dehydration melting of rocks in the descending slab surface and the metasomatized mantle wedge base, respectively. Therefore, the tectonic regime of subduction zones changes in both time and space with respect to their structures, inputs, processes and products. Ophiolites record the tectonic conversion from seafloor spreading to oceanic subduction beneath continental margin, whereas ultrahigh-temperature metamorphic events mark the tectonic conversion from compression to extension in orogens.
