Surface effects on the orbital order in the single-layered manganite La0.5Sr1.5MnO4

Near-surface structural study of transition metal oxides to understand their electronic properties

The atomic arrangement in a solid contains a great amount of information, and observation of its structure is essential for understanding the electronic and magnetic properties of transition metal oxides at a microscopic level. Increasing interest in the surfaces and interfaces of oxide systems, which is partly driven by the anticipation of device applications, enhances the importance of structural studies of the near-surface region. We review various types of structural studies with x-ray scattering on the near-surface region of metal oxides-from thick films to surfaces-in order to clarify the structural effects on their electronic properties.

Imaging oxygen defects and their motion at a manganite surface

Manganites are technologically important materials, used widely as solid oxide fuel cell cathodes; they have also been shown to exhibit electroresistance. Oxygen bulk diffusion and surface exchange processes are critical for catalytic action, and numerous studies of manganites have linked electroresistance to electrochemical oxygen migration. Direct imaging of individual oxygen defects is needed to underpin understanding of these important processes. Currently, it is not possible to collect the required images in bulk, but scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) could provide such data for surfaces. Here, we report the first atomic resolution images of oxygen defects at a manganite surface. Our experiments also reveal defect dynamics, including oxygen adatom migration, vacancy-adatom recombination and adatom bistability. Beyond providing an experimental basis for testing models describing the microscopics of oxygen migration at transition-metal oxide interfaces, our work resolves the long-standing puzzle of why STM is more challenging for layered manganites than for cuprates.

Bridging charge-orbital ordering and Fermi surface instabilities in half-doped single-layered manganite La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO₄

The single-layered half-doped manganite La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO₄ (LSMO), was studied by means of the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and resistivity measurements. STM revealed a smooth reconstruction-free surface; the density of states, extracted from photoemission and tunneling spectroscopy, is in agreement with transport measurements. The derived from ARPES Fermi surface (FS) nesting properties correspond to the known pattern of the charge-orbital ordering (COO), which implies that FS instability is related to the propensity to form a COO state in LSMO.

Cleaving-temperature dependence of layered-oxide surfaces

The surfaces generated by cleaving nonpolar, two-dimensional oxides are often considered to be perfect or ideal. However, single particle spectroscopies on Sr2RuO4, an archetypal nonpolar two-dimensional oxide, show significant cleavage temperature dependence. We demonstrate that this is not a consequence of the intrinsic characteristics of the surface: lattice parameters and symmetries, step heights, atom positions, or density of states. Instead, we find a marked increase in the density of defects at the mesoscopic scale with increased cleave temperature. The potential generality of these defects to oxide surfaces may have broad consequences to interfacial control and the interpretation of surface sensitive measurements.
