Abstract
Past work suggested that psychological stress, especially in the context of relationship stress, is associated with increased consumption of energy-dense food and when maintained for long periods of time, leads to adverse health consequences. Furthermore, this association is moderated by a variety of factors, including emotional over-eating style. That being said, few work utilized a dynamical system approach to understand the intraindividual and interindividual fluctuations within this process. The current study utilized a 14-day daily diary study, collected between January-March 2020, where participants reported their partner's negative relationship behavior and their own snacking behavior. A differential equation model was applied to the daily dairy data collected. Results showed that snacking behavior followed an undamped oscillator model while negative relationship behavior followed a damped coupled oscillator model. In other words, snacking behavior fluctuated around an equilibrium but was not coupled within dyadic partners. Negative relationship behavior fluctuated around an equilibrium and was amplified over time, coupled within dyadic partners. Furthermore, we found a two-fold association between negative relationship behavior and snacking: while the association between the displacement of negative relationship behavior and snacking was negative, change in negative relationship behavior and snacking were aligned. Thus, at any given time, one's snacking depends both on the amount of negative relationship behaviors one perceives and the dynamical state a dyad is engaging in (i.e., whether the negative relationship behavior is "exacerbating" or "resolving"). This former association was moderated by emotional over-eating style and the latter association was not. The current findings highlight the importance of examining dynamics within dyadic system and offers empirical and methodological insights for research in adult relationships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is now an increasing appreciation of how psychological health can contribute to cardiovascular disease, called the mind-heart connection. A blunted cardiovascular reactivity to depression and anxiety may be responsible for the potential mechanism, however, with inconsistent results. Anti-psychological drugs have an effect on the cardiovascular system and, thus, may disturb their relationship. However, in treatment-naive individuals with psychological symptoms, no research has specifically evaluated the relationship between psychological state and cardiovascular reactivity. METHODS We included 883 treatment-naive individuals who came from a longitudinal cohort study of Midlife in the United States. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were assessed by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Spielberger Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Liebowitz Social Anxiety scale (LSAS) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), respectively. Cardiovascular reactivity was measured using standardized, laboratory-based stressful tasks. RESULTS Treatment-naive individuals with depressive symptoms (CES-D ≥ 16), anxiety symptoms (STAI ≥ 54), and higher stress levels (PSS ≥ 27) had lower cardiovascular reactivity as assessed by systolic blood pressure (SBP) reactivity, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) reactivity and heart rate (HR) reactivity (P < 0.05). Pearson analyses showed that psychological symptoms were correlated with lower SBP reactivity, DBP reactivity, and heart rate reactivity (P < 0.05). Multivariate linear regression showed that depression and anxiety were negatively related to lower cardiovascular reactivity (SBP, DBP and HR reactivity) after full adjustments (P < 0.05). Stress was associated with reduced SBP and DBP reactivity but with a nonsignificant association with HR reactivity (P = 0.056). CONCLUSION Depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms are associated with blunted cardiovascular reactivity in treatment-naive adult Americans. These findings suggest that blunted cardiovascular reactivity is an underlying mechanism linking psychological health and cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While obesity is recognisably associated with changes in heart rate variability (HRV), the association between skeletal muscle mass and HRV is less clear. AIMS In this cross sectional study, we analysed the association of body fat (four parameters) and muscle mass (five parameters) with indicators of HRV activity. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Assessment of body composition and HRV was performed in n = 180 young-to-middle age healthy men exposed to high occupational physical activity, using the multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance device and the PPG-StressFlow® HRV photoplethysmography device, respectively. RESULTS Mean values of parameters of fat tissue were above normal/reference values. Muscle tissue indicators were higher or within the reference ranges. Fat tissue parameters were significantly higher in participants with lower parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) indicators. Weight-adjusted skeletal muscle index (wSMI) was significantly lower in men with reduced PNS parameters. Fat tissue parameters were negatively correlated with PNS parameters, while wSMI was positively correlated with PNS parameters. CONCLUSIONS Participants with higher fat mass and lower muscle mass had poorer parasympathetic activity. Since mean values of HRV parameters indicated mild parasympathetic dominance, we conclude that physical activity and consequently good muscle mass potentially compensated for the negative interaction between fat tissue and HRV.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE High cardiovascular reactions to psychological stress are associated with the development of hypertension, systemic atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease. However, it has become apparent that low biological stress reactivity also may have serious consequences for health, although less is known about the mechanisms of this. The objectives of this narrative review and opinion article are to summarize and consider where we are now in terms of the usefulness of the reactivity hypothesis and reactivity research, given that both ends of the reactivity spectrum seem to be associated with poor health, and to address some of the key criticisms and future challenges for the research area. METHODS This review is authored by the members of a panel discussion held at the American Psychosomatic Society meeting in 2019, which included questions such as the following: How do we measure high and low reactivity? Can high reactivity ever indicate better health? Does low or blunted reactivity simply reflect less effort on task challenges? Where does low reactivity originate from, and what is a low reactor? RESULTS Cardiovascular (and cortisol) stress reactivity are used as a model to demonstrate an increased understanding of the different individual pathways from stress responses to health/disease and show the challenges of how to understand and best use the reconstruction of the long-standing reactivity hypothesis given recent data. CONCLUSIONS This discussion elucidates the gaps in knowledge and key research issues that still remain to be addressed in this field, and that systematic reviews and meta-analyses continue to be required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood elevated circulatory stress mediators such as cortisol seem to play an important role in the development of hypertension and metabolic disorders later in life. Little is known about the association of body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), blood pressure (BP) and ethnicity with cortisol reactivity in young children. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 324 black and 227 white school children (aged 7.4 ± 1.0 years) were screened for salivary cortisol reactivity, body mass index, BP and CRF (shuttle run) by standardised assessments for children. RESULTS Children in the lower cortisol reactivity percentile (<25th) had a higher heart rate (87.0 ± 12.9 bpm) and a lower CRF (3.1 ± 1.3 stages) compared to children in the upper (>25th) percentile (86.2 ± 11.5 bpm and 3.5 ± 1.7 stages, respectively). At baseline, children of black ethnicity had a higher cortisol level (p < 0.001). Immediately before the exercise test, no associations of obesity, BP, CRF and ethnicity with cortisol levels were found. In analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) we found that low CRF, high BP and black ethnicity were independently associated with lower cortisol reactivity by performing the shuttle run test (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION Low CRF and high BP were associated with lower cortisol reactivity after a cardiorespiratory exercise test. Black children showed a lower cortisol reactivity which may contribute to the earlier onset of hypertension reported in black compared to white populations. Primary prevention programs need to focus on improving physical fitness to reduce the growing prevalence of cardiometabolic disorders during childhood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical inactivity contributes significantly to the development of obesity-related cardiovascular disease. Adiposity may lead to reduced heart rate variability (HRV), whereas increased physical activity (PA) has the potential to improve autonomic activity. These associations remain largely unexplored in healthy individuals. We therefore investigated whether adiposity and physical activity (PA) are associated with reduced heart rate variability (HRV) in young adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS We examined 403 black and 461 white healthy adults (aged 20-30 years) for HRV, including standard deviation of normal RR intervals (SDNN) and root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD). We measured adiposity, PA levels and blood pressure (BP). Body mass index (BMI) of ≥ 30 kg/m2 indicated obesity. RESULTS Participants with obesity had lower mean HRV than normal weight (SDNN [95% CI]; 138 [131-145]s vs 161 [158-165]ms), where those with the highest PA had higher SDNN (164 [160-169]ms) and RMSSD (51 [49-53]ms) than the least active individuals (150 [146-155]s) and 46 [44-48]ms)(all P < .01). BMI, waist circumference and body fat associated with lower SDNN (P < .001). With each unit increase of vigorous PA, a favourable higher RMSSD was found (P < .05). One unit increase in diastolic BP was associated with decreased SDNN and RMSSD (P < .001). These findings remained significant in multivariable-adjusted analyses. CONCLUSIONS Adiposity and low PA associated independently with depressed autonomic activity in young healthy adults. Sympathovagal imbalance seems to already contribute to elevated diastolic BP at young ages. Our study supports population-based prevention programmes in young adults, improving PA and healthy diet, to curb the development of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We investigated and compared the effect of the radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EM) emitted by a cell phone on the electrocardiogram and heart rate variability (HRV) of normotensive normal-weight and obese medical students. METHOD Twenty medical student volunteers, normal weight (age = 23 ± 2, BMI = 23.05 ± 1.72) or obese (age = 24 ± 2, BMI = 32.39 ± 4.78), were exposed to a cell phone (1) close to the heart in silent mode, no ringing or vibrating; (2) close to the heart in ring and vibration mode; (3) next to the ear (brain) while listening; and (4) next to the ear while listening and speaking. RESULTS The average basal HR of obese students significantly increased, while the PR interval; time domains, including standard deviation (SD) of all normal R-R intervals (SDNN), mean of the SD of all normal R-R intervals (SDNNi), SD of the average of normal R-R intervals (SDANN), and percentage of R-R intervals at least 50 ms different from the previous interval (pNN50); and high-power frequency (HF) decreased. The LF/HF ratio also significantly increased. The SDNN, SDNNi, SDANN, pNN50, and HF levels significantly decreased and the LF/HF significantly increased in normal-weight and obese individuals only when the phone was near the apex of the heart in ring and vibration mode. All changes were more profound in obese students. CONCLUSION Keeping the phone in a chest pocket reduced the HRV of normal-weight and obese medical students and exaggerated the effect of obesity on sympathetic activation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given previous research suggests an association between stress and the intake of energy-dense foods, this study investigated whether poststressor relaxation practice can attenuate stress-induced eating. METHODS Twenty-five men and women were exposed to four conditions on separate days: an acute laboratory stressor (S), acute stressor followed by 20 min of relaxation (SR) in the form of Abbreviated Progressive Muscle Relaxation (APMR), relaxation alone (R), and a control condition (C). Physiological and psychological responses to stress and relaxation were assessed, in addition to the subsequent energy intake of high-energy snacks. RESULTS Salivary cortisol, blood pressure, heart rate, and perceived stress were transiently elevated postlaboratory stressor (S and SR compared with R and C; p < .05). Meanwhile, perceived relaxation was acutely enhanced after APMR alone (R) compared with S, SR, and C (p < .05) and in SR (immediately after the APMR) compared with S (p < .05). No difference in mean energy intake was observed between conditions (p > .05). Likewise, no differences in perceived appetite or the levels of ghrelin, leptin, and insulin were found between conditions (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS Much variation exists in stress-induced dietary responses, and APMR either postacute stressor or in isolation does not appear to consistently alter the intake of commonly eaten snacks.

Abstract
Physical activity is a protective factor for autonomic dysfunction. However, whether this occurs in adolescents with abdominal obesity is still unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the association between physical activity and heart rate variability (HRV) in adolescents with and without abdominal obesity. This cross-sectional study included 1152 boys (age: 17 ± 1 years). HRV measures of time (root mean square of the squared differences between adjacent normal RR intervals-RMSSD and the percentage of adjacent intervals over 50 ms-PNN50) and frequency domains (balance sympathetic-vagal-LF/HF) were evaluated, as well as total physical activity, commuting physical activity, leisure-time physical activity, and abdominal obesity. All physical activity domains were associated with better RMSSD, PNN50, and LF/HF in normal weight adolescents (p < 0.05), whereas in adolescents with abdominal obesity only leisure-time physical activity was associated with better PNN50 (b = 0.174, p = 0.035) independent of age, period of the day, body mass index, and blood pressure. In conclusion, higher leisure-time physical activity, but not total and commuting physical activity levels, was associated with improved HRV in adolescents with abdominal obesity.

Abstract
Acute emotionally reactive mental stress (MS) can provoke prognostically relevant deficits in cardiac function and myocardial perfusion, and chronic inflammation increases risk for this ischemic phenomenon. We have described parasympathetic withdrawal and generation of inflammatory factors in MS. Adiposity is also associated with elevated markers of chronic inflammation. High body mass index (BMI) is frequently used as a surrogate for assessment of excess adiposity, and associated with traditional CAD risk factors, and CAD mortality. BMI is also associated with autonomic dysregulation, adipose tissue derived proinflammatory cytokines, which are also attendant to emotion provoked myocardial ischemia. Thus, we sought to determine if body mass index (BMI) contributes to risk of developing myocardial ischemia provoked by mental stress. We performed a prospective interventional study in a cohort of 161 patients with stable CAD. They completed an assessment of myocardial blood flow with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) simultaneously during 2 conditions: laboratory mental stress and at rest. Multivariate logistic regression determined the independent contribution of BMI to the occurrence of mental-stress induced ischemia. Mean age was 65.6 ±9.0 years; 87.0% had a history of hypertension, and 28.6% had diabetes. Mean BMI was 30.4 ± 4.7. Prevalence of mental stress ischemia was 39.8%. BMI was an independent predictor of mental stress ischemia, OR=1.10, 95% CI [1.01-1.18] for one-point increase in BMI and OR=1.53, 95% CI [1.06-2.21] for a 4.7 point increase in BMI (one standard deviation beyond the cohort BMI mean), p=0.025 for all. These data suggest that BMI may serve as an independent risk marker for mental stress ischemia. The factors attendant with greater BMI, which include autonomic dysregulation and inflammation, may represent pathways by which high BMI contribute to this risk and serve as a conceptual construct to replicate these findings in larger CAD populations.

Abstract
The present meta-analysis aimed to quantify current evidence on sex differences in the autonomic control of the heart, indexed by measures of heart rate variability (HRV) in healthy human subjects. An extensive search of the literature yielded 2020 titles and abstracts, of which 172 provided sufficient reporting of sex difference in HRV. Data from 63,612 participants (31,970 females) were available for analysis. Meta-analysis yielded a total of 1154 effect size estimates (k) across 50 different measures of HRV in a cumulated total of 296,247 participants. Females showed a significantly lower mean RR interval and standard deviation of RR intervals (SDNN). The power spectral density of HRV in females is characterized by significantly less total power that contains significantly greater high- (HF) and less low-frequency (LF) power. This is further reflected by a lower LF/HF ratio. Meta-regression revealed significant effects of age, respiration control and the length of recording available for analysis. Although women showed greater mean heart rate, they showed greater vagal activity indexed by HF power of HRV. Underlying mechanisms of these findings are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests a link between sedentary behaviours and depressive symptoms. Mechanisms underlying this relationship are not understood, but inflammatory processes may be involved. Autonomic and inflammatory responses to stress may be heightened in sedentary individuals contributing to risk, but no study has experimentally investigated this. AIMS To examine the effect of sedentary time on mood and stress responses using an experimental design. METHOD Forty-three individuals were assigned to a free-living sedentary condition and to a control condition (usual activity) in a cross-over, randomised fashion and were tested in a psychophysiology laboratory after spending 2 weeks in each condition. Participants completed mood questionnaires (General Health Questionnaire and Profile of Mood States) and wore a motion sensor for 4 weeks. RESULTS Sedentary time increased by an average of 32 min/day (P = 0.01) during the experimental condition compared with control. Being sedentary resulted in increases in negative mood independent of changes in moderate to vigorous physical activity (ΔGHQ = 6.23, ΔPOMS = 2.80). Mood disturbances were associated with greater stress-induced inflammatory interleukin-6 (IL-6) responses (β = 0.37). CONCLUSIONS Two weeks of exposure to greater free-living sedentary time resulted in mood disturbances independent of reduction in physical activity. Stress-induced IL-6 responses were associated with changes in mood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Heightened cardiovascular reactivity and delayed recovery to stress are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Africans, who are more prone to develop hypertension, show greater cardiovascular reactivity to stress. However, causal factors underlying individual and ethnic differences in stress reactivity and recovery remain largely unexplored. Leptin, which is known for its sympatho-activating effects, is higher in Africans compared to Caucasians for any given body mass index. We compared how cardiovascular reactivity and recovery relate to leptin in African (n = 200) and Caucasian (n = 209) teachers. METHODS AND RESULTS We measured leptin in serum and cardiovascular baseline and reactivity continuously with the Finometer device during the cold pressor test for 1 min, and recovery at intervals of 1, 3 and 5 min. Africans had higher body mass index, leptin and blood pressure (all P < 0.001). After full adjustment in multiple regression analyses, associations were seen mainly at the 5 min recovery interval. In Africans, cardiac output reactivity (β = -0.335; P = 0.0018) and arterial compliance- (β = -0.241; P = 0.048) associated negatively and total peripheral resistance- (β = 0.227; P = 0.047) positively with leptin. In Caucasians, diastolic blood pressure correlated positively with leptin (β = 0.200; P = 0.015). CONCLUSION In Africans, higher circulating leptin levels associated with prolonged cardiovascular recovery after exposure to stress which could explain their increased vulnerability to hypertension development.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This cross-sectional study was performed in 2011 and included 4619 Brazilian adolescents (14-19 years old) to analyze the association between elevated resting heart rate (RHR) and cardiovascular risk factors in boys and girls. RHR and blood pressure were measured using an oscillometric monitor. Overweight was assessed by body mass index and abdominal obesity by waist circumference. Physical activity levels and sedentary behaviors were obtained using a questionnaire. The effect of clustering of cardiovascular risk factors on RHR was analyzed. For boys, abdominal obesity (b = 0.106, p = 0.003), high sedentary behavior (b = 0.099, b < 0.001), physical inactivity (b = 0.049, p = 0.034), and high blood pressure (b = 0.160, p < 0.001) were associated with RHR, whereas for girls, only high blood pressure was associated with RHR (b = 0.259, p < 0.001), after adjustment for age, period of the day, and other cardiovascular risk factors. Boys with five risk factors presented significantly higher (p < 0.05) RHR values (82.5 ± 13.4 beats min(-1)) than those for boys without any cardiovascular risk factors (68.8 ± 10.4 beats min(-1)). The girls with five risk factors presented a mean RHR value of 89.8 ± 9.9 beats min(-1) that was higher (p < 0.05) than that for girls who had no risk factors (79.6 ± 10.9 beats min(-1)). CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated that while RHR was associated with cardiovascular risk factors in both sexes, the clustering of risk factors amplified the elevation of RHR in a gender-dependent fashion. WHAT IS KNOWN • Resting heart rate is a marker of cardiovascular disease and mortality in adults and associated with risk factor such as higher levels of blood pressure, triglycerides, glucose, and obesity in children and adolescents. WHAT IS NEW • The data from the current study suggest that the risk factor clustering is associated with elevated resting heart rate in adolescents and that the clustering of risk factors amplifies the elevation of resting heart rate in a gender-dependent fashion.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Impaired heart rate (HR) recovery after exercise testing is considered a predictor of cardiovascular mortality as it reflects vagus nerve dysfunction. OBJECTIVE To assess the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and HR recovery after exercise. METHODS We analyzed the records of 2443 patients of both sexes, aged between 20 and 59 years, in sinus rhythm, not using negative chronotropic agents and with no myocardial ischemic response to exercise testing carried out at a specialist clinic, between 2005 and 2011. BMI was categorized as normal (18.5-<25 kg/m(2)), overweight (25-≤30 kg/m(2)) or obese (>30 kg/m(2)). The different BMI groups were compared in terms of HR recovery after exercise, which was calculated as the difference between maximum HR during exercise and in the first minute of recovery. Recovery was considered impaired when the difference was ≤12 bpm. RESULTS Eighty-seven (3.6%) patients presented impaired recovery, which was three times more prevalent in the obese group and twice as prevalent in the overweight group compared with the normal group (p<0.001 and p=0.010, respectively). Obese patients presented higher basal HR and lower maximum HR, as well as reduced chronotropic reserve (p<0.001). In multivariate analysis, impaired HR recovery was associated with overweight (relative risk [RR]=1.8; p=0.035), obesity (RR=2; p=0.016), number of metabolic equivalents (RR=0.82; p<0.001) and resting HR (RR=1.05; p<0.001). The hazard ratio for hypertension was 2 (p=0.083, NS). CONCLUSION Impaired HR recovery was associated with higher BMI, demonstrating that obese individuals present vagus nerve dysfunction.

Abstract
Epidemiologic evidence links psychosocial stress with obesity but experimental studies examining the mechanisms that mediates the effect of stress on adiposity are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate whether changes in adiposity following minimal weight loss affect heightened stress responses in women, and examine the role of the adipokine leptin in driving inflammatory responses. Twenty-three overweight or obese, but otherwise healthy, women (M age = 30.41 ± 8.0 years; BMI = 31.9 ± 4.1 kg/m(2)) completed standardized acute mental stress before and after a 9-week calorie restriction program designed to modify adiposity levels. Cardiovascular (blood pressure and heart rate) and inflammatory cytokines (leptin and interleukin-6; IL-6) responses to mental stress were assessed several times between baseline and a 45-min post-stress recovery period. There were modest changes in adiposity measures while the adipokine leptin was markedly reduced (-27%) after the intervention. Blood pressure reactivity was attenuated (-3.38 ± 1.39 mmHg) and heart rate recovery was improved (2.07 ± 0.96 Bpm) after weight loss. Blood pressure responses were inversely associated with changes in waist to hip ratio post intervention. Decreased levels of circulating leptin following weight loss were inversely associated with the IL-6 inflammatory response to stress (r = -0.47). We offered preliminary evidence suggesting that modest changes in adiposity following a brief caloric restriction program may yield beneficial effect on cardiovascular stress responses. In addition, reductions in basal leptin activity might be important in blunting pro-inflammatory responses. Large randomized trials of the effect of adiposity on autonomic responses are thus warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Leptin was assessed to play a coordinating role in obesity and its cardio-vascular complications, however the findings are conflicting and further clinical investigation is required. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association of serum leptin with cardio-vascular risk factors in different body mass index and age groups.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Â One hundred and forty nine female patients were enrolled in the study and divided into groups according to body mass index (BMI) and age. Following measurements were carried out: height, weight, BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure. Venous blood sample was obtained for plasma leptin, insulin, glucose and lipid profile analysis. Insulin resistance index was calculated for each patient. Body fat distribution was measured using Dual energy X-ray Absorbtiometry.RESULTS: The lowest leptin concentration was observed in overweight patients, the highest concentration was seen in obese patients. The difference between leptin levels were not observed in age groups. Leptin positively correlated with high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in obese and elder patients.CONCLUSION: Leptin might act as a preventive measure for cardiovascular complications only in the presence of sufficient amount of fat mass. Further studies are warranted in order to support these results.

Abstract
Recent research suggests a role for the appetite hormone leptin in cigarette smoking. This study examined patterns of change in leptin in response to stress and associations with craving during the initial phase of a quit attempt. Thirty-six smokers (average age±SEM, 33.4±2.4) interested in smoking cessation set a quit day and were required to be abstinent for 24h. After, they completed a laboratory session including public speaking and cognitive challenges, and attended 4 weekly post-cessation assessments. Blood samples and self-report measures were collected throughout the laboratory session. The results indicated that leptin levels significantly increased following exposure to acute stress. We also found positive correlations between leptin and craving for cigarettes. No differences were observed in leptin levels between smokers who maintained abstinence for 4 weeks and those who relapsed during this period. These findings suggest that leptin levels may change in response to stress and that leptin could be a useful marker of craving for smoking.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the relationship between the heart rate variability parameters and the indicators of central and general obesity in obese normotensive adolescents. Methods: Seventy-four 13 to 18 year-old obese normotensive adolescents participated in this study. The indicators analyzed for central and general obesity were waist circumference and body mass index, respectively. Heart rate variability was obtained by heart rate monitoring. For this, the adolescents remained in a supine position for 7 minutes with controlled breathing. Parameters were obtained in time domain (standard deviation of all the RR intervals, root mean square of successive differences between the normal adjacent RR intervals and the percentage of adjacent intervals with more than 50ms) and frequency domain variables (low and high frequency bands and the sympathovagal balance). Results: After adjustments for gender, age, and cardiorespiratory fitness, a negative correlation between the waist circumference and the root mean square of successive differences between the normal adjacent RR intervals (ß=-1.51; standard error=0.56; p<0.05) and the percentage of adjacent intervals with more than 50 ms (ß=-0.96; standard error=0.34; p<0.05) were observed, while the body mass index showed no significant correlation with any heart rate variability parameter (p>0.05). Conclusion: Central obesity is a better discriminator than general obesity of autonomic cardiac dysfunction in obese normotensive adolescents

Abstract
The current study evaluates the validity of the PEP computed from a fixed value for the Q-wave onset to R-wave peak (QR) interval and an R-wave peak to B-point (RB) interval that is estimated from the R-peak to dZ/dt-min peak (ISTI) interval. Ninety-one subjects participated in a 90min laboratory experiment in which a variety of often employed physical and mental stressors were presented and 31 further subjects participated in a structured 2hour ambulatory recording in which they partook in natural activities that induced large variation in posture and physical activity. PEP, QR interval, and ISTI were scored and rigorously checked by interactive inspection. Across the very diverse laboratory and ambulatory conditions the QR interval could be approximated by a fixed interval of 40ms but 95% confidence intervals were large (25.5 to 54.5ms). Multilevel analysis showed that 79% to 81% of the within and between-subject variation in the RB interval could be predicted by the ISTI with a simple linear regression equation. However, the optimal intercept and slope values in this equation varied significantly across subjects and study setting. Bland Altman plots revealed a large discrepancy between the estimated PEP using the R-wave peak and dZ/dt-min peak and the actual PEP based on the Q-wave onset and B-point. We conclude that the PEP estimated from a fixed QR interval and the ISTI could be a useful addition to the psychophysiologist's toolbox, but that it cannot replace the actual PEP to index cardiac sympathetic control.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Atherosclerosis is a complex process characterized by an increase in vascular wall thickness owing to the accumulation of cells and extracellular matrix between the endothelium and the smooth muscle cell wall. There is evidence that females are at lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) as compared to males. This has led to an interest in examining the contribution of genetic background and sex hormones to the development of CVD. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of factors, including those related to gender, that influence CVD. METHODS Evidence analysis from PubMed and individual searches concerning biochemical and endocrine influences and gender differences, which affect the origin and development of CVD. RESULTS Although still controversial, evidence suggests that hormones including estradiol and androgens are responsible for subtle cardiovascular changes long before the development of overt atherosclerosis. CONCLUSION Exposure to sex hormones throughout an individual's lifespan modulates many endocrine factors involved in atherosclerosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Proinflammatory cytokines have been reported to be elevated in individuals experiencing chronic stress as well as in those with major depressive disorder. Much less is known about cytokines in anxiety disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and panic disorder (PD). We hypothesized that PD and PTSD would be associated with a generalized proinflammatory cytokine signature. METHOD We utilized Luminex technology to examine 20 cytokines and chemokines in serum from 48 well-characterized individuals with a primary DSM-IV PD or PTSD diagnosis, and 48 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. We conservatively employed a Bonferroni correction for multiple testing (alpha=.05/20=.0025). RESULTS Individuals with primary PTSD or PD had significantly elevated median peripheral cytokine levels for 18 of 20 different cytokines compared to age- and gender-matched healthy controls (all P<.0025). To assess for the presence of a generalized proinflammatory state, we also examined the proportion of subjects with detectable levels of at least six of nine common proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines (IL-6, IL-1alpha, IL-1beta, IL-8, MCP-1, MIP-1alpha, Eotaxin, GM-CSF, and IFN-alpha). For men and women, 87% of anxiety patients had six or more detectable levels of these proinflammatory cytokines, compared with only 25% of controls (Fisher's Exact Test (FET) P=.000). Confirmatory analysis of the subset of individuals without current psychiatric medication use or comorbid depression was of comparable significance. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that a generalized inflammatory state may be present in individuals with PD or PTSD.
