Water-Induced Crystal Transition and Accelerated Relaxation Process of Polyamide 4 Chains in Microfibers

Microplastics have recently been identified as one of the major contributors to environmental pollution. To design and control the biodegradability of polymer materials, it is crucial to obtain a better understanding of the aggregation states and thermal molecular motion of polymer chains in aqueous environments. Here, we focus on melt-spun microfibers of a promising biodegradable plastic, polyamide 4 (PA4), with a relatively greater number density of hydrolyzable amide groups, which is regarded as an alternative to polyamide 6. Aggregation states and thermal molecular motion of PA4 microfibers without/with a post-heating drawing treatment under dry and wet conditions were examined by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction analysis in conjunction with dynamic mechanical analysis. Sorbed water molecules in the microfibers induced the crystal transition from a meta-stable γ-form to a thermodynamically stable α-form via activation of the molecular motion of PA4 chains. Also, the post-drawing treatment caused a partial structural change of PA4 chains, from an amorphous phase to a crystalline phase. These findings should be useful for designing PA4-based structural materials applicable for use in marine environments.

Hybrid polyurethanes composed of isobutyl-substituted open-cage silsesquioxane in the main chains: synthesis, properties and surface segregation in a polymer matrix

The resulting polyurethanes exhibited excellent optical transparency and surface hydrophobicity and acted as effective surface modifiers in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by surface segregation.

Surface Segregation of a Star-Shaped Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane in a Polymer Matrix

A simple way to control only the surface properties of polymer materials, without changing the bulk properties, has long been desired. The segregation behavior when a component with a tiny amount fed into the matrix is thermodynamically enriched at the surface is one of the candidate methods. This capability was examined herein by focusing on a star-shaped polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (s-POSS), where the central POSS unit is tethered to eight isobutyl-substituted POSS cages as a surface modifier. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the surface of a film of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was almost completely covered with POSS units by adding just 5 wt % s-POSS to it. The segregated POSS dramatically altered the physical properties such as molecular motion and the mechanical and dielectric responses at the surface of the PMMA film. These findings make it clear that s-POSS is an excellent surface modifier for glassy polymers.

Beads-on-String-Shaped Poly(azomethine) Applicable for Solution Processing of Bilayer Devices Using a Same Solvent

Solvent-based deposition techniques for fabrication of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) generally require orthogonal solvents for deposition of a conjugated polymer layer on a polymer gate insulator layer. Here, we found significantly reduced dissolution rate of the polymeric film in the same solvent after casting a homegeneous polymerization solution of para-bis(3-aminopropyl)hexaisobutyl-substituted T₈ cage (1) with terephthalaldehyde. The limited dissolution rate in the solvent provided enough chance for fabrication of a regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) layer on the present polymer films without using an orthogonal solvent. The rheological properties indicate that physical interaction between the polymer chains provides the significantly reduced dissolution rate after the deposition onto a substrate without any cross-linking treatments.

Cell adhesion on glassy scaffolds with a different mechanical response

L929 mouse fibroblast cells were cultured on bilayer films composed of a glassy poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) on a rubbery polyisoprene. When the thickness of the upper PMMA film fell short of a threshold value of 50 nm, the adhesion of fibroblasts on it was remarkably suppressed. A possible explanation is that the surface of a bilayer with an ultrathin PMMA layer apparently becomes softer due to the manifestation of a mechanical response from the rubbery layer underneath. Finite element analysis shows that the shear stress at the bilayer surface induced by traction force of the attached cells is dependent on the PMMA thickness, similar to the cell adhesion behavior. These results make it clear that fibroblasts can sense the surface stiffness of polymers with a modulus even on the order of MPa.

Surface segregation of a branched polymer with hydrophilic poly[2-(2-ethoxy)ethoxyethyl vinyl ether] side chains
