In Situ and Continuous Decoding Hydrogen Generation in Solar Water-Splitting Cells

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is gaining recognition as an effective method for producing green hydrogen. However, the absence of in situ, continuous decoding hydrogen generation tools hampers a detailed understanding of the physics and chemistry involved in hydrogen generation within PEC systems. In this article, we present a quantitative, spatiotemporally resolved optical sensor employing a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) to probe hydrogen formation and temperature characteristics in the PEC system. Demonstrating this principle, we observed hydrogen formation and temperature changes in a novel cappuccino cell using a BiVO4/TiO2 photoanode and a Cu2O/CuO/TiO2 photocathode. Our findings demonstrate that FBG sensors can probe dynamic hydrogen formation at 0.5 s temporal resolution; these sensors are capable of detecting hydrogen concentrations as low as 0.6 mM. We conducted in situ and continuous monitoring of hydrogen and temperature to ascertain various parameters: the rate of hydrogen production at the photocathode surface, the time to reach hydrogen saturation, the distribution of hydrogen and temperature, and the rate of hydrogen transfer in the electrolyte under both external bias and unbiased voltage conditions. These results contribute valuable insights into the design and optimization of PEC water-splitting devices, advancing the in situ comprehensive monitoring of PEC water-splitting processes.

Building Smarter Aqueous Batteries

Amidst the global trend of advancing renewable energies toward carbon neutrality, energy storage becomes increasingly critical due to the intermittency of renewables. As an alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), aqueous batteries have received growing attention for large-scale energy storage due to their economical and safe features. Despite the fruitful achievements at the material level, the reliability and lifetime of aqueous batteries are still far from satisfactory. Alike LIBs, integrating smartness is essential for more reliable and long-life aqueous batteries via operando monitoring and automatic response to extreme abuses. In this review, recent advances in sensing techniques and multifunctional battery-sensor systems together with self-healing methods in aqueous batteries is summarized. The significant role of artificial intelligence in designing and optimizing aqueous batteries with high efficiency is also highlighted. Ultimately, it is extrapolated toward the future and present the humble perspective for building smarter aqueous batteries.

Advancements in Battery Monitoring: Harnessing Fiber Grating Sensors for Enhanced Performance and Reliability

Batteries play a crucial role as energy storage devices across various industries. However, achieving high performance often comes at the cost of safety. Continuous monitoring is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of batteries. This paper investigates the advancements in battery monitoring technology, focusing on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). By examining the factors contributing to battery degradation and the principles of FBGs, this study discusses key aspects of FBG sensing, including mounting locations, monitoring targets, and their correlation with optical signals. While current FBG battery sensing can achieve high measurement accuracies for temperature (0.1 °C), strain (0.1 με), pressure (0.14 bar), and refractive index (6 × 10-5 RIU), with corresponding sensitivities of 40 pm/°C, 2.2 pm/με, -0.3 pm/bar, and -18 nm/RIU, respectively, accurately assessing battery health in real time remains a challenge. Traditional methods struggle to provide real-time and precise evaluations by analyzing the microstructure of battery materials or physical phenomena during chemical reactions. Therefore, by summarizing the current state of FBG battery sensing research, it is evident that monitoring battery material properties (e.g., refractive index and gas properties) through FBGs offers a promising solution for real-time and accurate battery health assessment. This paper also delves into the obstacles of battery monitoring, such as standardizing the FBG encapsulation process, decoupling multiple parameters, and controlling costs. Ultimately, the paper highlights the potential of FBG monitoring technology in driving advancements in battery development.

Functional Optical Fiber Sensors Detecting Imperceptible Physical/Chemical Changes for Smart Batteries

The battery technology progress has been a contradictory process in which performance improvement and hidden risks coexist. Now the battery is still a "black box", thus requiring a deep understanding of its internal state. The battery should "sense its internal physical/chemical conditions", which puts strict requirements on embedded sensing parts. This paper summarizes the application of advanced optical fiber sensors in lithium-ion batteries and energy storage technologies that may be mass deployed, focuses on the insights of advanced optical fiber sensors into the processes of one-dimensional nano-micro-level battery material structural phase transition, electrolyte degradation, electrode-electrolyte interface dynamics to three-dimensional macro-safety evolution. The paper contributes to understanding how to use optical fiber sensors to achieve "real" and "embedded" monitoring. Through the inherent advantages of the advanced optical fiber sensor, it helps clarify the battery internal state and reaction mechanism, aiding in the establishment of more detailed models. These advancements can promote the development of smart batteries, with significant importance lying in essentially promoting the improvement of system consistency. Furthermore, with the help of smart batteries in the future, the importance of consistency can be weakened or even eliminated. The application of advanced optical fiber sensors helps comprehensively improve the battery quality, reliability, and life.

In situ surface turbidity sensor based on localized light scattering from tilted fiber Bragg gratings

We propose a compact fiber-optic sensor for in situ and continuous turbidity monitoring, based on surface optical scattering of polarized evanescent waves from targeted particles. The sensor is composed of a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) packaged inside a microfluidic capillary. The transmission spectrum of the TFBG provides a fine comb of narrow cladding resonances that are highly sensitive to the turbidity due to the localized light scattering of polarized evanescent waves from the microparticles near the fiber surface (as opposed to traditional bulk/volumetric turbidity measurement). We also propose a transmission spectral area interrogation method and quantify the repeatable correlation between the surface turbidity and the optical spectral area response. We show that the maximum sensitive turbidity response is achieved when the wavelength of the sensing cladding resonance matches the size of surrounding solid particles.

Operando monitoring of dendrite formation in lithium metal batteries via ultrasensitive tilted fiber Bragg grating sensors

Lithium (Li) dendrite growth significantly deteriorates the performance and shortens the operation life of lithium metal batteries. Capturing the intricate dynamics of surface localized and rapid mass transport at the electrolyte-electrode interface of lithium metal is essential for the understanding of the dendrite growth process, and the evaluation of the solutions mitigating the dendrite growth issue. Here we demonstrate an approach based on an ultrasensitive tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) sensor which is inserted close to the electrode surface in a working lithium metal battery, without disturbing its operation. Thanks to the superfine optical resonances of the TFBG, in situ and rapid monitoring of mass transport kinetics and lithium dendrite growth at the nanoscale interface of lithium anodes have been achieved. Reliable correlations between the performance of different natural/artificial solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) and the time-resolved optical responses have been observed and quantified, enabling us to link the nanoscale ion and SEI behavior with the macroscopic battery performance. This new operando tool will provide additional capabilities for parametrization of the batteries' electrochemistry and help identify the optimal interphases of lithium metal batteries to enhance battery performance and its safety.

Cross-sensitivity immune SPR sensor based on fan-shaped microstructured optical fiber for temperature and refractive index sensing

To avoid coating and filling into the fiber holes, facilitate the phase-matching and eliminate cross-sensitivity problems, we propose a surface plasmon resonance sensor based on a fan-shaped microstructured optical fiber (MOF) for the simultaneous sensing of temperature and refractive index (RI). The fan-shaped structure is fabricated by polishing two sides of MOF with an angle of 120°. One side is coated with the gold film and polydimethylsiloxane layer for temperature sensing, and the other side is only coated with the gold film for RI sensing. The two sensing sides can support resonance peaks with two polarized directions at the angle of 120°, which are independent without cross-sensitivity. By monitoring the shifts of the two polarized peaks, our numerical results show that the temperature sensitivity is 2.932 nm/°C in the range of 30 °C to 40 °C, and RI sensitivity is 4235 nm/RIU in the range of 1.38 to 1.39, respectively.

Ultra-sensitive specific detection of nucleic acids in pathogenic infections by Ta2C-MXene sensitization-based ultrafine plasmon spectroscopy combs

Accurate and rapid population-scale screening techniques based on SARS-CoV-2 RNA are essential in preventing and controlling the COVID-19 epidemic. However, the sensitivity and specificity of the assay signal are challenged by the problems of target dilution and sample contamination inherent in high-volume pooled testing. Here, we reported a collaborative system of high-loaded hybrid probes targeting N and OFR1a coupling with the novel Ta₂C-M/Au/TFBG biosensor, providing high-intensity vector signals for detecting SARS-CoV-2. The method relies on a segmental modification approach to saturable modify multiple activation sites of SARS-CoV-2 on the high-performance Ta₂C-M surface. The coupling of multi-site synergy with composite excited TFBG results in excellent signal transduction, detection limits (0.2 pg/mL), and hybridization efficiency. Without relying on amplification, the collaborative system achieved specific differentiation of 30 clinical samples in an average diagnostic time of 1.8 min. In addition, for the first time, a kinetic determination of dilution mixed samples was achieved and showed a high-intensity carrier signal and fantastic stability. Therefore, it can be used as a collaborative, integrated tool to play a massive role in the screening, prevention, and control of COVID-19 and other epidemics.

Plasmonic fiber-optic sensing system for in situ monitoring the capacitance and temperature of supercapacitors

Compared with ex situ measurement, the in situ measurement is more suitable for inspecting complex electrochemical reactions and improving the intelligent energy storage management. However, most of the in situ investigation instruments are bulky and expensive. Here we demonstrate a miniaturized, portable, and low-cost fiber-optic sensing system for in situ monitoring the capacitance and temperature. It can help evaluate the self-discharge rate in supercapacitors (SCs). The fiber-optic sensing system with two probes are implanted inside the SCs to monitor the capacitance and temperature, respectively. The dual fiber-optic probes can work independently and avoid cross-interference through structure design. The fiber-optic localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) probe near the electrode surface can detect the capacitance in real-time by monitoring ion aggregation on the opposite electrode. The fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) probe encapsulated in the thermosensitive liquid can independently detect the temperature change. The measurement uncertainties of the two sensing probes are 5.6 mF and 0.08 ℃, respectively. The proposed tiny and flexible fiber-optic sensing system provides a promising method for in situ monitoring the critical parameters. It is also a powerful tool for investigating electrochemical reactions in various energy storage devices.

Operando optical fiber monitoring of nanoscale and fast temperature changes during photo-electrocatalytic reactions

In situ and continuous monitoring of thermal effects is essential for understanding photo-induced catalytic processes at catalyst's surfaces. However, existing techniques are largely unable to capture the rapidly changing temperatures occurring in sub-μm layers at liquid-solid interfaces exposed to light. To address this, a sensing system based on a gold-coated conventional single-mode optical fiber with a tilted fiber Bragg grating inscribed in the fiber core is proposed and demonstrated. The spectral transmission from these devices is made up of a dense comb of narrowband resonances that can differentiate between localized temperatures rapid changes at the catalyst's surface and those of the environment. By using the gold coating of the fiber as an electrode in an electrochemical reactor and exposing it to light, thermal effects in photo-induced catalysis at the interface can be decoded with a temperature resolution of 0.1 °C and a temporal resolution of 0.1 sec, without perturbing the catalytic operation that is measured simultaneously. As a demonstration, stable and reproducible correlations between the light-to-heat conversion and catalytic activities over time were measured for two different catalysis processes (linear and nonlinear). These kinds of sensing applications are ideally suited to the fundamental qualities of optical fiber sensors, such as their compact size, flexible shape, and remote measurement capability, thereby opening the way for various thermal monitoring in hard-to-reach spaces and rapid catalytic reaction processes.

Construction of an enzyme-based all-fiber SPR biosensor for detection of enantiomers

Chiral analysis of amino acids (AAs) is of great importance in medical science due to the distinctive effect of AA isomers on human health. Although various chiral recognition techniques have been developed, the quantitative chiral recognition of low-level AA isomers remains challenging. Here, we combined the fiber optic SPR with an enzyme-substrate recognition mechanism to construct a direct-assay-type chiral AA biosensor. As a proof-of-concept attempt, a recently discovered Rasamsonia emersonii D-amino acid oxidase (ReDAAO) with a wide substrate spectrum and high stability was immobilized on the graphene oxide and gold nanorods composites (GO-AuNRs), using both EDC/NHS coupling and the gold-binding peptide (GBP) method. Such a biosensor can distinguish two AA isomers at the same concentration. It achieved specific detection of D-amino acids (D-AAs) with a linear range from 5x10^-4 mM to 30 mM. Furthermore, it showed good resistance to enantiomeric interference. When the percentage of D-AA increases in the isomer mixture, a good linear relationship between the D/(D + L)-AA ratio and SPR spectral shift was obtained. This unique combination of the enzyme, nanocomposite, and SPR taps into the rich reservoir of proteins for chiral receptors. It lays the foundation for protein-based chiral recognition of other clinically important small molecules in future biosensor designs.

Operando monitoring of ion activities in aqueous batteries with plasmonic fiber-optic sensors

Understanding ion transport kinetics and electrolyte-electrode interactions at electrode surfaces of batteries in operation is essential to determine their performance and state of health. However, it remains a challenging task to capture in real time the details of surface-localized and rapid ion transport at the microscale. To address this, a promising approach based on an optical fiber plasmonic sensor capable of being inserted near the electrode surface of a working battery to monitor its electrochemical kinetics without disturbing its operation is demonstrated using aqueous Zn-ion batteries as an example. The miniature and chemically inert sensor detects perturbations of surface plasmon waves propagating on its surface to rapidly screen localized electrochemical events on a sub-μm-scale thickness adjacent to the electrode interface. A stable and reproducible correlation between the real-time ion insertions over charge-discharge cycles and the optical plasmon response has been observed and quantified. This new operando measurement tool will provide crucial additional capabilities to battery monitoring methods and help guide the design of better batteries with improved electro-chemistries.

In-Situ Li-Ion Pouch Cell Diagnostics Utilising Plasmonic Based Optical Fibre Sensors

As the drive to improve the cost, performance characteristics and safety of lithium-ion batteries increases with adoption, one area where significant value could be added is that of battery diagnostics. This paper documents an investigation into the use of plasmonic-based optical fibre sensors, inserted internally into 1.4 Ah lithium-ion pouch cells, as a real time and in-situ diagnostic technique. The successful implementation of the fibres inside pouch cells is detailed and promising correlation with battery state is reported, while having negligible impact on cell performance in terms of capacity and columbic efficiency. The testing carried out includes standard cycling and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) tests, and the use of a reference electrode to correlate with the anode and cathode readings separately. Further observations are made around the sensor and analyte interaction mechanisms, robustness of sensors and suggested further developments. These finding show that a plasmonic-based optical fibre sensor may have potential as an opto-electrochemical diagnostic technique for lithium-ion batteries, offering an unprecedented view into internal cell phenomena.

Manipulating Interfacial Stability Via Absorption-Competition Mechanism for Long-Lifespan Zn Anode

The stability of Zn anode in various Zn-based energy storage devices is the key problem to be solved. Herein, aromatic aldehyde additives are selected to modulate the interface reactions between the Zn anode and electrolyte. Through comprehensively considering electrochemical measurements, DFT calculations and FEA simulations, novel mechanisms of one kind of aromatic aldehyde, veratraldehyde in inhibiting Zn dendrite/by-products can be obtained. This additive prefers to absorb on the Zn surface than H₂O molecules and Zn²⁺, while competes with hydrogen evolution reaction and Zn plating/stripping process via redox reactions, thus preventing the decomposition of active H₂O near the interface and uncontrollable Zn dendrite growth via a synactic absorption-competition mechanism. As a result, Zn-Zn symmetric cells with the veratraldehyde additive realize an excellent cycling life of 3200 h under 1 mA cm^-2/1 mAh cm^-2 and over 800 h even under 5 mA cm^-2/5 mAh cm^-2. Moreover, Zn-Ti and Zn-MnO₂ cells with the veratraldehyde additive both obtain elevated performance than that with pure ZnSO₄ electrolyte. Finally, two more aromatic aldehyde additives are chosen to prove their universality in stabilizing Zn anodes.

Fabrication and Characterization of Line-by-Line Inscribed Tilted Fiber Bragg Gratings Using Femtosecond Laser

In this paper, we studied the basic characteristics of tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs), inscribed line-by-line. Experimental results showed that if the TFBGs were located within different planes parallel to the fiber axis, the spectra performed differently. For 2°TFBG, if it was located near the central plane, the Bragg resonance was stronger than ghost mode resonance, and the order reversed if it was located near the boundary between core and cladding. As the tilted angle increased, the range of cladding mode resonance increased. When the tilted angle was larger than 12°, the birefringence effect was observed. Based on the birefringence phenomenon, torsion characteristics were experimentally studied; the sensitivity was about 0.025 dB/degree in the linear variation range. The harmonic order of TFBGs also affected the transmission spectrum. Leaky mode resonance was observed in the 8th order TFBG, and torsion (or polarization) influenced the spectrum of the 8th order TFBG. Our research represented the theory of line-by-line inscribed TFBGs and provided an inscription guidance for TFBGs.

Ultrasensitive detection of endocrine disruptors via superfine plasmonic spectral combs

The apparent increase in hormone-induced cancers and disorders of the reproductive tract has led to a growing demand for new technologies capable of detecting endocrine disruptors. However, a long-lasting challenge unaddressed is how to achieve ultrahigh sensitive, continuous, and in situ measurement with a portable device for in-field and remote environmental monitoring. Here we demonstrate a simple-to-implement plasmonic optical fiber biosensing platform to achieve an improved light-matter interaction and advanced surface chemistry for ultrasensitive detection of endocrine disruptors. Our platform is based on a gold-coated highly tilted fiber Bragg grating that excites high-density narrow cladding mode spectral combs that overlap with the broad absorption of the surface plasmon for high accuracy interrogation, hence enabling the ultrasensitive monitoring of refractive index changes at the fiber surface. Through the use of estrogen receptors as the model, we design an estradiol-streptavidin conjugate with the assistance of molecular dynamics, converting the specific recognition of environmental estrogens (EEs) by estrogen receptor into surface-based affinity bioassay for protein. The ultrasensitive platform with conjugate-induced amplification biosensing approach enables the subsequent detection for EEs down to 1.5 × 10^-3 ng ml^-1 estradiol equivalent concentration level, which is one order lower than the defined maximal E₂ level in drinking water set by the Japanese government. The capability to detect EEs down to nanogram per liter level is the lowest limit of detection for any estrogen receptor-based detection reported thus far. Its compact size, flexible shape, and remote operation capability open the way for detecting other endocrine disruptors with ultrahigh sensitivity and in various hard-to-reach spaces, thereby having the potential to revolutionize environment and health monitoring.

Surface Plasmonic Sensors: Sensing Mechanism and Recent Applications

Surface plasmonic sensors have been widely used in biology, chemistry, and environment monitoring. These sensors exhibit extraordinary sensitivity based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) or localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effects, and they have found commercial applications. In this review, we present recent progress in the field of surface plasmonic sensors, mainly in the configurations of planar metastructures and optical-fiber waveguides. In the metastructure platform, the optical sensors based on LSPR, hyperbolic dispersion, Fano resonance, and two-dimensional (2D) materials integration are introduced. The optical-fiber sensors integrated with LSPR/SPR structures and 2D materials are summarized. We also introduce the recent advances in quantum plasmonic sensing beyond the classical shot noise limit. The challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed.

Low-coherence photonic method of electrochemical processes monitoring

We present an advanced multimodality characterization platform for simultaneous optical and electrochemical measurements of ferrocyanides. Specifically, we combined a fiber-optic Fabry–Perot interferometer with a three-electrode electrochemical setup to demonstrate a proof-of-principle of this hybrid characterization approach, and obtained feasibility data in its monitoring of electrochemical reactions in a boron-doped diamond film deposited on a silica substrate. The film plays the dual role of being the working electrode in the electrochemical reaction, as well as affording the reflectivity to enable the optical interferometry measurements. Optical responses during the redox reactions of the electrochemical process are presented. This work proves that simultaneous opto-electrochemical measurements of liquids are possible.

Study on a Plasmonic Tilted Fiber Grating-Based Biosensor for Calmodulin Detection

Tilted fiber Bragg grating, which has the advantages of both fiber Bragg grating and long-period fiber grating, has been widely studied for sensing in many fields, especially in the field of biochemistry. Calmodulin, which has a wide distribution in eukaryotes, can regulate several enzymes such as adenylate cyclase and guanylate cyclase and mediates several cellular processes such as cell proliferation and cyclic nucleotide metabolism. The abnormal levels of calmodulin in the body will result in serious effects from metabolism to nerve growth and memory. Therefore, it is important to measure the calmodulin concentration in the body. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a plasmonic tilted fiber Bragg grating-based biosensor for calmodulin detection. The biosensor was made using an 18° tilted fiber Bragg grating with a 50 nm-thick gold nanofilm coating the surface of the fiber, and transient receptor potential channels were bonded onto the surface of the gold nanofilm to serve as bio-detectors for calmodulin detection. Experimental results showed that the limit of detection using our biosensor was 0.44 nM. Furthermore, we also demonstrated that the interaction between calmodulin and transient receptor potential channels was quite weak without calcium in the solution, which agrees with the biology. Our proposed biosensor has a simple structure, is easy to manufacture, and is of small size, making it a good choice for real-time, label-free, and microliter-volume biomolecule detection.

Quantum Plasmonic Sensors

The extraordinary sensitivity of plasmonic sensors is well-known in the optics and photonics community. These sensors exploit simultaneously the enhancement and the localization of electromagnetic fields close to the interface between a metal and a dielectric. This enables, for example, the design of integrated biochemical sensors at scales far below the diffraction limit. Despite their practical realization and successful commercialization, the sensitivity and associated precision of plasmonic sensors are starting to reach their fundamental classical limit given by quantum fluctuations of light-known as the shot-noise limit. To improve the sensing performance of these sensors beyond the classical limit, quantum resources are increasingly being employed. This area of research has become known as "quantum plasmonic sensing", and it has experienced substantial activity in recent years for applications in chemical and biological sensing. This review aims to cover both plasmonic and quantum techniques for sensing, and it shows how they have been merged to enhance the performance of plasmonic sensors beyond traditional methods. We discuss the general framework developed for quantum plasmonic sensing in recent years, covering the basic theory behind the advancements made, and describe the important works that made these advancements. We also describe several key works in detail, highlighting their motivation, the working principles behind them, and their future impact. The intention of the review is to set a foundation for a burgeoning field of research that is currently being explored out of intellectual curiosity and for a wide range of practical applications in biochemistry, medicine, and pharmaceutical research.

Highly efficient free-space fiber coupler with 45° tilted fiber grating to access remotely placed optical fiber sensors

In this work, a 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG) is used as a waveguide coupler for the development of a portable interrogation system to access remotely placed optical fiber sensors. The TFG is directly connected to a remote fiber sensor and serves as a highly efficient light coupler between the portable interrogation unit and the sensor. Variation of strain and temperatures are measured with a standard fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor, which serves as a remotely placed optical sensor. A light beam from the interrogation unit is coupled into the TFG by a system of lenses, mirrors and optical collimator and acted as the input of the FBG. Reflected light from the FBG sensor is coupled back to the interrogation unit via the same TFG. The TFG is being used as a receiver and transmitter of light and constituent the key part of the system to connect "light source to the optical sensor" and "optical sensor to detector." A successful demonstration of the developed system for strain and temperature sensing applications have been presented and discussed. Signal to noise ratio of the reflected light from the sensors was greater than ∼ 40 dB.

In-situ DNA hybridization detection based on a reflective microfiber probe

A label-free biosensor based on a reflective microfiber probe for in-situ real-time DNA hybridization detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The microfiber probe is simply fabricated by snapping a non-adiabatic biconical microfiber through closing the oxyhydrogen flame during fiber stretching. Assisted with the Fresnel reflection at the end of microfiber, a reflective microfiber modal interferometer is realized. The in-situ DNA hybridization relies on the surface functionalization of a monolayer of Poly-L-lysine (PLL) and synthetic DNA sequences that bind to a given target with high specificity. The detection processes of DNA hybridization in various concentration of target DNA solutions are monitored in real-time and the experimental results present a minimum detectable concentration of 10pM with good repeatability. Additionally, the detection specificity is also investigated by immersing the microfiber probe into the non-complementary ssDNA solutions and observing the spectral variation. The proposed biosensor has advantages of high sensitivity, compact size, ease of use and simple fabrication, which makes it has great potential to be applied in a lot of fields such as disease diagnosis, medicine, and environmental science.

V-shaped micro-structure optical fiber surface plasmon resonance sensor for the simultaneous measurement of the refractive index and temperature

We propose and demonstrate a novel and compact optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for the simultaneous measurement of the refractive index (RI) and temperature. The sensor is fabricated by employing the eccentric-core fiber (ECF), which is polished to a V-shaped micro-structure optical fiber (MOF). One side of the MOF is used as the RI sensing channel, and the other side is used as the temperature sensing channel. Two sensing channels are independent without crosstalk. The sensor has high RI sensitivity up to the maximum of 3376 nm/RIU from 1.333 to 1.385 RIU, and high-temperature sensitivity up to -2.65  nm/°C from 20°C to 60°C. In addition, owing to the few-mode light in the ECF, the full width at half-maximum is smaller than other SPR sensors based on multimode fiber. This sensor will be extremely helpful to improve the RI measurement uncertainty caused by temperature disturbance.

A Review of Methods for Fibre-Optic Distributed Chemical Sensing

Chemical sensing is of great importance in many application fields, such as medicine, environmental monitoring, and industrial process control. Distributed fibre-optic sensing received significant attention because of its unique feature to make spatially resolved measurements along the entire fibre. Distributed chemical sensing (DCS) is the combination of these two techniques and offers potential solutions to real-world applications that require spatially dense chemical measurements covering large length scales. This paper presents a review of the working principles, current status, and the emerging trends within DCS.

A label-free fluorometric aptasensor for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) detection based on aggregation-induced emission probe

Based on Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE), the development of a label-free, simple and sensitive fluorometric aptasensor for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) detection is described. With ATP present, the aptamers will combine with ATP and the conformation of the aptamer will switch from a random coil to an antiparallel G-quadruplex, which impedes the digestion by exonuclease I (Exo I). Addition of 4,4 -(1E,1E)-2,2-(anthracene-9,10-diyl) bis (ethene-2,1-diyl) bis (N,N, N-trimethyl-benzenaminium iodide) (DSAI) into the solution will cause aggregation of DSAI on the surface of the aptamer/ATP complex and consequently give rise to strong emission. Additionally, a good linear relationship was observed under optimized conditions between the fluorescence intensities and the logarithm of ATP concentrations (R² = 0.9908). The established aptamer sensor was highly sensitive and exhibited a low limit of detection of 32.8 nM, with superior specificity for ATP. It was also used in the quantification of ATP levels in human serum samples and demonstrated satisfactory recoveries in the scope of 93.2%-107.6%. The cellular ATP assay results indicated that the developed method can be used for monitoring ATP concentrations in cell extracts without the interference of other substances in the cells. This method offers several advantages such as simplicity, rapidity, low cost and excellent selectivity, which make it hold great potential for the detection of ATP in bioanalytical and biological studies.

Direct laser writing of flexible planar supercapacitors based on GO and black phosphorus quantum dot nanocomposites

The research interest in wearable electronics has continuously stimulated the development of flexible energy storage systems with high performance and robustness. However, open problems with respect to energy storage efficiency and device integration are still challenging. Here, we demonstrate the laser fabrication of flexible planar supercapacitors based on graphene oxide (GO) and black phosphorus quantum dot (BPQD) nanocomposites. By combining graphene and BPQDs, the resultant supercapacitors feature high conductivity and activity, demonstrating enhanced specific capacity and superior rate performance, compared to those based on reduced GO (RGO) alone. Furthermore, the as-obtained devices present outstanding flexibility. Their performance shows unobvious degradation after repeated cycles of bending and straightening. Additionally, with the help of direct laser writing (DLW) technology, integration of the supercapacitors has been achieved without the need for any metal interconnection. The integrated devices delivered reasonable performance uniformity with a voltage extension of 3 V, which could easily power a LED. The supercapacitor-based RGO and BPQD nanocomposites demonstrate great potential for practical applications in flexible and wearable electronics.

Hierarchically structuring and synchronous photoreduction of graphene oxide films by laser holography for supercapacitors

Herein, we report a simple laser holography technology for hierarchically structuring and synchronous photoreduction of graphene oxides (GO), toward the development of efficient graphene-based electrodes for supercapacitor applications in cost effectively manners. Hierarchical micro-nanostructures, formed due to laser treatment induced photoreduction and ablation effect. Interestingly, both the morphology and reduction degree of the laser holography reduced GO (LHRGO) show strong dependence on the laser intensity, providing the feasibility for controlling the micro-nanostructures, chemical composition, and the conductivity of the graphene electrodes. Furthermore, the supercapacitors based on LHRGO show higher capacitance values and better electrochemical performance compared to that based on thermal reduced GO (TRGO) of same reduction level. Photoredution and micro-nanostructuring of GO using laser holography may hold great promise for production of effective carbon-based electrodes towards practical applications in energy storage devices.
