Optical Manipulation of Soft Matter

Optical manipulation has emerged as a pivotal tool in soft matter research, offering superior applicability, spatiotemporal precision, and manipulation capabilities compared to conventional methods. Here, an overview of the optical mechanisms governing the interaction between light and soft matter materials during manipulation is provided. The distinct characteristics exhibited by various soft matter materials, including liquid crystals, polymers, colloids, amphiphiles, thin liquid films, and biological soft materials are highlighted, and elucidate their fundamental response characteristics to optical manipulation techniques. This knowledge serves as a foundation for designing effective strategies for soft matter manipulation. Moreover, the diverse range of applications and future prospects that arise from the synergistic collaboration between optical manipulation and soft matter materials in emerging fields are explored.

Optofluidic memory and self-induced nonlinear optical phase change for reservoir computing in silicon photonics

Nanophotonics allows to employ light-matter interaction to induce nonlinear optical effects and realize non-conventional memory and computation capabilities, however to date, light-liquid interaction was not considered as a potential mechanism to achieve computation on a nanoscale. Here, we experimentally demonstrate self-induced phase change effect which relies on the coupling between geometric changes of thin liquid film to optical properties of photonic waveguide modes, and then employ it for neuromorphic computing. In our optofluidic silicon photonics system we utilize thermocapillary-based deformation of thin liquid film capable to induce nonlinear effect which is more than one order of magnitude higher compared to the more traditional heat-based thermo-optical effect, and allowing operation as a nonlinear actuator and memory element, both residing at the same compact spatial region. The resulting dynamics allows to implement Reservoir Computing at spatial region which is approximately five orders of magnitude smaller compared to state-of-the-art experimental liquid-based systems.

Contactless thin-film rheology unveiled by laser-induced nanoscale interface dynamics

One of the classical limitations for the investigation of the local rheology of small scale soft objects and/or confined fluids is related to the difficulty to control mechanical contact and its consequences. In order to overcome these issues, we implement a new local, active, fast and contactless optical strategy, called optorheology, which is based on both the optical radiation pressure of a laser wave to dynamically deform a fluid interface and interferometry to probe this deformation with nanometric resolution. This optical approach is first validated by measuring the surface tension and the viscosity of transparent Newtonian liquids. We also show how non-equilibrium situations, such as continuous evaporation, can be used to deduce the thickness dependence of the rheology of thin films and the concentration dependence of the viscosity of binary liquid mixtures and suspensions. We further extend the investigation to elasticity and viscoelasticity measurements of polymer solutions. Finally, since liquids may absorb light, we discuss the influence of a weak laser heating and the triggering of interface deformations by thermocapillary tangential stresses that could represent a complementary approach to probe the rheology at small scale.
