Dynamic Spatial-Selective Metasurface with Multiple-Beam Interference

The emergence of the metasurface has provided a versatile platform for the manipulation of light at the nanoscale. Recent research in metasurfaces has explored a plethora of dynamic control and switching of multifunctionalities, paving the way for innovative applications in fields such as imaging, sensing, and communication. However, current dynamic multifunctional metasurfaces face challenges in terms of functional scalability and selective activation. In this work, we introduce and experimentally demonstrate a strategy that utilizes multiple plane waves to create arbitrary periodic patterns on the metasurface, thus enabling the dynamic and arbitrary spatial-selective activation of its embedded multiplexed functionalities. Furthermore, our strategy facilitates dynamic light control through mechanical translation, as demonstrated by a high-speed, dynamically switchable beam deflection scenario. Our method effectively overcomes the limitations associated with traditional spatially multiplexing techniques, offering greater flexibility and selectivity for dynamic control in multifunctional metasurfaces.

Metasurface for Engineering Superimposed Ince-Gaussian Beams

Ince-Gaussian beams (IGBs) are the third complete family of exact and orthogonal solutions of the paraxial wave equation and have been applied in many fields ranging from particle trapping to quantum optics. IGBs play a very important role in optics as they represent the exact and continuous transition modes connecting Laguerre-Gaussian and Hermite-Gaussian beams. The method currently in use suffers from the high cost, complexity, and large volume of the optical system. The superposition of IGBs can generate complicated structured beams with multiple phase and polarization singularities. A metasurface approach is proposed to realizing various superpositions of IGBs without relying on a complicated optical setup. By superimposing IGBs with even and odd modes, multiple phase, and polarization singularities are observed in the resultant beams. The phase and polarization singularities are modulated by setting the initial phase in the design and controlling the incident linear polarization. The compactness of the developed metasurface devices and the unique properties of the generated beams have the potential to impact many practical applications such as particle manipulation, orbital angular momentum spectrum manipulation, and optical communications.

Switchable Two-Dimensional AND and Exclusive OR Operation Based on Dual-Wavelength Metasurfaces

Logic operation serves as the foundation and core element of computing networks; it will bring huge vitality to advanced information processing with its adaptation in the optical domain. As fundamental logic operations, AND and exclusive OR (XOR) operations serve a multitude of purposes, such as their ability to cooperate in enabling image processing and interpretation. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a wavelength multiplexed AND and XOR function based on metasurfaces. By combining two cosine gratings with distinct frequencies and an initial phase difference of π/2, we extract the similarities and differences between two input images simultaneously by illuminating them with 445 and 633 nm wavelengths. Additionally, we explore its potential in information encryption, where overall security is enhanced by distributing distinct parts of initial information and encoded keys to different receivers. This design possesses the benefits of convenient mode switching and high-quality imaging, facilitating advanced applications in pattern recognition, machine vision, medical diagnosis, etc.

Micro- and nanofabrication of dynamic hydrogels with multichannel information

Creating micro/nanostructures containing multi-channel information within responsive hydrogels presents exciting opportunities for dynamically changing functionalities. However, fabricating these structures is immensely challenging due to the soft and dynamic nature of hydrogels, often resulting in unintended structural deformations or destruction. Here, we demonstrate that dehydrated hydrogels, treated by a programmable femtosecond laser, can allow for a robust fabrication of micro/nanostructures. The dehydration enhances the rigidity of the hydrogels and temporarily locks the dynamic behaviours, significantly promoting their structural integrity during the fabrication process. By utilizing versatile dosage domains of the femtosecond laser, we create micro-grooves on the hydrogel surface through the use of a high-dosage mode, while also altering the fluorescent intensity within the rest of the non-ablated areas via a low-dosage laser. In this way, we rationally design a pixel unit containing three-channel information: structural color, polarization state, and fluorescent intensity, and encode three complex image information sets into these channels. Distinct images at the same location were simultaneously printed onto the hydrogel, which can be observed individually under different imaging modes without cross-talk. Notably, the recovered dynamic responsiveness of the hydrogel enables a multi-information-encoded surface that can sequentially display different information as the temperature changes.

Perovskite single-pixel detector for dual-color metasurface imaging recognition in complex environment

Highly efficient multi-dimensional data storage and extraction are two primary ends for the design and fabrication of emerging optical materials. Although metasurfaces show great potential in information storage due to their modulation for different degrees of freedom of light, a compact and efficient detector for relevant multi-dimensional data retrieval is still a challenge, especially in complex environments. Here, we demonstrate a multi-dimensional image storage and retrieval process by using a dual-color metasurface and a double-layer integrated perovskite single-pixel detector (DIP-SPD). Benefitting from the photoelectric response characteristics of the FAPbBr2.4I0.6 and FAPbI3 films and their stacked structure, our filter-free DIP-SPD can accurately reconstruct different colorful images stored in a metasurface within a single-round measurement, even in complex environments with scattering media or strong background noise. Our work not only provides a compact, filter-free, and noise-robust detector for colorful image extraction in a metasurface, but also paves the way for color imaging application of perovskite-like bandgap tunable materials.

Longitudinally variable 3D optical polarization structures

Generation and manipulation of three-dimensional (3D) optical polarization structures have received considerable interest because of their distinctive optical features and potential applications. However, the realization of multiple 3D polarization structures in a queue along the light propagation direction has not yet been reported. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a metalens to create longitudinally variable 3D polarization knots. A single metalens can simultaneously generate three distinct 3D polarization knots, which are indirectly validated with a rotating polarizer. The 3D polarization profiles are dynamically modulated by manipulating the linear polarization direction of the incident light. We further showcase the 3D image steganography with the generated 3D polarization structures. The ultrathin nature of metasurfaces and unique properties of the developed metalenses hold promise for lightweight polarization systems applicable to areas such as 3D image steganography and virtual reality.

All-dielectric six-foci metalens for infrared polarization detection based on Stokes space

The detection technology of infrared polarization has gained significant attention due to its ability to provide better identification and obtain more information about the target. In this paper, based on the expression of the full polarization state in Stokes space, we designed micro-nano metasurface functional arrays to calculate the polarization state of the incident light by reading the Stokes parameters (a set of parameters that describe the polarization state). Metalens with linear and circular polarization-dependent functions are designed based on the propagation and geometric phases of the dielectric Si meta-atoms in the infrared band, respectively. The device exhibits a high polarization extinction ratio. The influence of incident angle on polarization-dependent metalens is discussed, and the analysis of incident angle is of great significance for the practical application. An infrared six-foci metalens is proposed, each corresponding to the Poincaré sphere's coordinate component (a graphical polarization state method). By matching the six polarization components of the incident light and the Stokes parameters, the polarization detection function can be realized by calculating the polarization state of the incident light. There is a slight error between the theoretical value and the calculated value of the unit coordinate component of the Stokes parameters. At the same time, the intensity distribution of different incident light polarization azimuth angles and ellipticity angles on the focal plane agrees with the theory. The advantage of the device is that the polarization state of the incident light can be directly calculated without passing through other components. The six-foci metalens have potential applications in polarization detection and imaging, space remote sensing, etc.

Compact multi-foci metalens spectrometer

A lightweight and portable spectrometer is desirable for miniaturization and integration. The unprecedented capability of optical metasurfaces has shown much promise to perform such a task. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a compact high-resolution spectrometer with a multi-foci metalens. The novel metalens is designed based on wavelength and phase multiplexing, which can accurately map the wavelength information into its focal points located on the same plane. The measured wavelengths in the light spectra agree with simulation results upon the illumination of various incident light spectra. The uniqueness of this technique lies in the novel metalens that can simultaneously realize wavelength splitting and light focusing. The compactness and ultrathin nature of the metalens spectrometer render this technology have potential applications in on-chip integrated photonics where spectral analysis and information processing can be performed in a compact platform.

Multiplexing Optical Images for Steganography by Single Metasurfaces

Image steganography based on intelligent devices is one of the effective routes for safely and quickly transferring secret information. However, optical image steganography has attracted far less attention than digital one due to the state-of-the-art technology limitations of high-resolution optical imaging in integrated devices. Optical metasurfaces, composed of ultrathin subwavelength meta-atoms, are extensively considered for flat optical-imaging nano-components with high-resolutions as competitive candidates for next-generation miniaturized devices. Here, multiplex imaging metasurfaces composed of single nanorods are proposed under a detailed strategy to realize optical image steganography. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that an optical steganographic metasurface can simultaneously transfer independent secret image information to two receivers with special keys, without raising suspicions for the general public under the cloak of a cover image. The proposed optical steganographic strategy by metasurfaces can arbitrarily distribute a continuous grayscale image together with a black-and-white image in separate channels, implying the distinguishing feature of high-density information capacity for integration and miniaturization in optical meta-devices.

Grayscale-patterned integrated multilayer-metal-dielectric microcavities for on-chip multi/hyperspectral imaging in the extended visible bandwidth

Pixelated filter arrays of Fabry-Perot (FP) cavities are widely integrated with photodetectors to achieve a WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get") on-chip spectral measurements. However, FP-filter-based spectral sensors typically have a trade-off between their spectral resolution and working bandwidth due to design limitations of conventional metal or dielectric multilayer microcavities. Here, we propose a new idea of integrated color filter arrays (CFAs) consisting of multilayer metal-dielectric-mirror FP microcavities that, enable a hyperspectral resolution over an extended visible bandwidth (∼300 nm). By introducing another two dielectric layers on the metallic film, the broadband reflectance of the FP-cavity mirror was greatly enhanced, accompanied by as-flat-as-possible reflection-phase dispersion. This resulted in balanced spectral resolution (∼10 nm) and spectral bandwidth from 450 nm to 750 nm. In the experiment, we used a one-step rapid manufacturing process by using grayscale e-beam lithography. A 16-channel (4 × 4) CFA was fabricated and demonstrated on-chip spectral imaging with a CMOS sensor and an impressive identification capability. Our results provide an attractive method for developing high-performance spectral sensors and have potential commercial applications by extending the utility of low-cost manufacturing process.

Toward Water-Immersion Programmable Meta-Display

Heading toward next-generation intelligent display, dynamic control capability for meta-devices is critical for real world applications. Beyond the conventional electrical/optical/mechanical/thermal tuning methods, liquid immersion recently has emerged as a facile tuning mechanism which is easily accessible (especially water) and practically implementable for large tuning area. However, due to the longstanding and critical drawback of lacking independent-encoding capability, the state-of-art immersion approach remains incapable of pixel-level programmable switching. Here a water-immersion tuning scheme with pixel-scale programmability for dynamic meta-displays is proposed. Tunable meta-pixels can be engineered to construct spectral selective patterns at prior-/post- immersion states, such that a metasurface enables pixel-level transforming animations for dynamic multifield meta-displays, including near-field dual-nanoprints and far-field dual-holographic displays. The proposed water-immersion programmable approach for meta-display, benefitting from its large tuning area, facile operation and strong repeatability, may find a revolutionary path toward next-generation intelligent display with practical applications in dynamic display/encryption, information anticounterfeit/storage, and optical sensors.

Metalens for generating multi-channel polarization-wavelength multiplexing metasurface holograms

We demonstrate multi-channel metasurface holograms, where the pixels of holographic images are represented by the focal points of metalens, leading to the nanoscale resolution. The required phase profiles are implemented by elaborately arranging the hybrid all-dielectric meta-atoms with specific orientation angles. For verification, two-channel single-color images are reconstructed on the focal plane of the metalens by polarization control. Alternatively, three-channel color holograms are exhibited by manipulating the incident wavelengths. More uniquely, the metalens can be further engineered to generate polarization-wavelength multiplexing color holograms in six channels. Our work provides an effective approach to reconstructing holographic images and enables potential applications including color display, information engineering, and optical encryption.
