Pyrolysis of a flash nanoprecipitated tannic acid–metal@polymer assembly to create an electrochemically active metal@nanocarbon catalyst

Multifunctional composite films based on polyvinyl alcohol, quaternary ammonium salt modified cellulose nanofibers and tannic acid-iron ion coordination complexes for food packaging

The development of sustainable and well-performing food packaging materials takes on critical significance, whereas it is still challenging. To overcome the shortcomings of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a degradable packaging material, in this work, hydrophobic quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) modified cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and tannic acid‑iron ion coordination complexes (TA-Fe) were adopted for the preparation of functional PVA films. The modified CNF (CNF-QAS) not only improved the mechanical properties and water resistance of PVA, but also endowed it with antibacterial ability. In addition, the synergistic antibacterial capability with CNF-QAS was achieved using TA-Fe with photothermal therapy. As a result, the modulus, elongation at break, tensile strength, and water contact angle of the prepared PVA films were examined as 88 MPa, 200 %, 11.7 MPa, and 94.8°, respectively. Furthermore, with the assistance of CNF-QAS and TA-Fe, the films inhibited the growth of E. coli and S. aureus by 99.8 % and 99.7 %, respectively, and they exhibited high cell viability of 90.5 % for L929 fibroblasts. Based on the above encouraging properties, the functional PVA films could significantly extend the shelf life of oranges for over two weeks, proving the excellent application prospects in the food packaging field.

Recent advances in mixing-induced nanoprecipitation: from creating complex nanostructures to emerging applications beyond biomedicine

Mixing-induced nanoprecipitation (MINP) is an efficient, controllable, scalable, versatile, and cost-effective technique for the preparation of nanoparticles. In addition to the formulation of drugs, MINP has attracted tremendous interest in other fields. In this review, we highlight recent advances in the preparation of nanoparticles with complex nanostructures via MINP and their emerging applications beyond biomedicine. First, the mechanisms of nanoprecipitation and four mixing approaches for MINP are briefly discussed. Next, three strategies for the preparation of nanoparticles with complex nanostructures including sequential nanoprecipitation, controlling phase separation, and incorporating inorganic nanoparticles, are summarized. Then, emerging applications including the engineering of catalytic nanomaterials, environmentally friendly photovoltaic inks, colloidal surfactants for the preparation of Pickering emulsions, and green templates for the synthesis of nanomaterials, are reviewed. Furthermore, we discuss the structure-function relationships to gain more insight into design principles for the development of functional nanoparticles via MINP. Finally, the remaining issues and future applications are discussed. This review will stimulate the development of nanoparticles with complex nanostructures and their broader applications beyond biomedicine.

Co, Fe codoped holey carbon nanosheets as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn-air batteries

Unique Co, Fe codoped holey carbon nanosheets with high surface area and abundant bimetal single atoms (CoFe@HNSs) exhibited remarkable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity (0.704 V) with very positive half-wave potential (0.897 V) for the ORR and small potential (1.601 V) to drive 10 mA cm^-2 for the OER, outperforming commercial Pt/C and IrO₂, respectively. Furthermore, as the air-cathode for rechargeable Zn-air batteries, the CoFe@HNS based device exhibits a high-power density of 131.3 mW cm^-2 and long-term stability over 140 h, indicating the attractive potential of CoFe@HNSs applied in energy storage and conversion.
