Interplay of hot electrons from localized and propagating plasmons

Trends in hot carrier distribution for disordered noble-transition metal alloys

We developed and tested an approach for predicting trends for efficient hot carrier generation among disordered metal alloys. We provide a simple argument for the importance of indirect transitions in the presence of disorder, thus justifying the use of joint density of states (JDOS)-like quantities for exploring these trends. We introduce a newJDOS-like quantity,JDOSK, which heuristically accounts for longer lifetimes of quasiparticles close to the Fermi energy. To demonstrate the efficacy of this new quantity, we apply it to the study of Cu50X50where X = Ag, Au, Pd and Y50Pd50where Y = Au, Ni. We predict that Ni50Pd50produces the most hot carriers among the alloys considered. The improvement in the density of excited photocarriers over the base alloy used, Cu50Ag50, is 3.4 times for 800 nm and 19 times for 1550 nm light. This boost in hot-carrier generation is consequence of the ferromagnetic nature of the Ni alloy. We argue that our method allows efficient material-specific predictions for low bias photoconductivity of alloys.

Flexible bidirectional self-powered photodetector with significantly reduced volume and accelerated response speed based on hydrogel and lift-off GaN-based nanowires

Due to the wide range of potential applications for next-generation multi-functional devices, the flexible self-powered photodetector (PD) with polarity-switchable behavior is essential but very challenging to be realized. Herein, a wearable bidirectional self-powered PD based on detached (Al,Ga)N and (In,Ga)N nanowires has been proposed and demonstrated successfully. Arising from the photovoltage-competing dynamics across (Al,Ga)N and (In,Ga)N nanowire photoelectrodes, such PD can generate the positive (33.3 mA W -1) and negative (-0.019 mA W -1) photo-responsivity under ultraviolet (UV) and visible illumination, respectively, leading to the bidirectional photocurrent behavior. Thanks to the introduction of quasi solid-state hydrogel, the PD can work without the liquid-electrolyte, thus remarkably reducing the volume from about 482 cm3 to only 0.18 cm3. Furthermore, the use of hydrogel is found to enhance response speed in the UV range by reducing the response time for more than 95%, which is mainly attributed to the increased open circuit potential and reduced ion transport distance. As the GaN connecting segment is pretty thin, the piezoelectric charges generated by stress are proposed to have only a limited effect on the photocurrent density. Therefore, both the stable on-off switching characteristics and photocurrent densities can still be achieved after being bent 400 times. With an excellent flexibility, this work creates opportunities for technological applications of bidirectional photocurrent PDs in flexible optoelectronic devices, e.g., wearable intelligent sensors.

Understanding the Behaviors of Plasmon-Induced Hot Carriers and Their Applications in Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis driven by plasmon-induced hot carriers has been gaining increasing attention. Recent studies have demonstrated that plasmon-induced hot carriers can directly participate in photocatalytic reactions, leading to great enhancement in solar energy conversion efficiency, by improving the catalytic activity or changing selectivity. Nevertheless, the utilization efficiency of hot carriers remains unsatisfactory. Therefore, how to correctly understand the generation and transfer process of hot carriers, as well as accurately differentiate between the possible mechanisms, have become a key point of attention. In this review, we overview the fundamental processes and mechanisms underlying hot carrier generation and transport, followed by highlighting the importance of hot carrier monitoring methods and related photocatalytic reactions. Furthermore, possible strategies for the further characterization of plasmon-induced hot carriers and boosting their utilization efficiency have been proposed. We hope that a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental behaviors of hot carriers can aid in designing more efficient photocatalysts for plasmon-induced photocatalytic reactions.

Broadening spectral responses and achieving environmental stability in SnS2/Ag-NPs/HfO2 flexible phototransistors

Layered two-dimensional (2D) materials have gained popularity thanks to their atomically thin physique and strong coupling with light. Here, we investigated a wide band gap (≥ 2 eV) 2D material, i.e., tin disulfide (SnS2), and decorated it with silver nanoparticles, Ag-NPs, for broadband photodetection. Our results show that the SnS2/Ag-NPs devices exhibit broadband photodetection ranging from the ultraviolet to near-infrared (250-1050 nm) spectrum with decreased rise/decay times from 8/20 s to 7/16 s under 250 nm wavelength light compared to the bare SnS2 device. This is attributed to the localized surface plasmon resonance effect and the wide band gap of SnS2 crystal. Furthermore, the HfO2-passivated SnS2/Ag-NPs devices exhibited high photodetection performance in terms of photoresponsivity (∼12 500 A W-1), and external quantum efficiency (∼6 × 106%), which are significantly higher compared to those of bare SnS2. Importantly, after HfO2 passivation, the SnS2/Ag-NPs photodetector maintained the stable performance for several weeks with merely ∼5.7% reduction in photoresponsivity. Lastly, we fabricated a flexible SnS2/Ag-NPs photodetector, which shows excellent and stable performance under various bending curvatures (0, 20, and 10 mm), as it retains ∼80% of its photoresponsivity up to 500 bending cycles. Thus, our study provides a simple route to realize broadband and stable photoactivity in flexible 2D material-based devices.

Improved Dual-Polarity Response via Pyro-phototronic Effect for Filterless Visible Light Communication

Dual-polarity response photodetectors (PDs) take full advantage of the directivity of the photocurrent to identify optical information. The dual-polarity signal ratio, a key parameter that represents the equilibrium degree of responses to different lights, is proposed for the first time. The synchronous enhancement of dual-polarity photocurrents and the amelioration of the dual-polarity signal ratio are beneficial to the practical applications. Herein, based on the selective light absorption and energy band structure design, a self-powered CdS/PEDOT:PSS/Au heterojunction PD consisting of a p-n junction and a Schottky junction exhibits unique wavelength-dependent dual-polarity response, where the photocurrent is negative and positive in the short and long wavelength regions, respectively. More importantly, the pyro-phototronic effect inside the CdS layer significantly improves the dual-polarity photocurrents with the maximum enhancement factors of 120%, 343%, 1167%, 1577%, and 1896% at 405, 450, 532, 650, and 808 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the dual-polarity signal ratio tends to 1:1 due to different degrees of the enhancement. This work provides a novel design strategy for dual-polarity response PDs with a simple working principle and improved performance, which can supply a substitution for two traditional PDs in the filterless visible light communication (VLC) system.

Recent Progress in Interface Engineering of Nanostructures for Photoelectrochemical Energy Harvesting Applications

With rapid and continuous consumption of nonrenewable energy, solar energy can be utilized to meet the energy requirement and mitigate environmental issues in the future. To attain a sustainable society with an energy mix predominately dependent on solar energy, photoelectrochemical (PEC) device, in which semiconductor nanostructure-based photocatalysts play important roles, is considered to be one of the most promising candidates to realize the sufficient utilization of solar energy in a low-cost, green, and environmentally friendly manner. Interface engineering of semiconductor nanostructures has been qualified in the efficient improvement of PEC performances including three basic steps, i.e., light absorption, charge transfer/separation, and surface catalytic reaction. In this review, recently developed interface engineering of semiconductor nanostructures for direct and high-efficiency conversion of sunlight into available forms (e.g., chemical fuels and electric power) are summarized in terms of their atomic constitution and morphology, electronic structure and promising potential for PEC applications. Extensive efforts toward the development of high-performance PEC applications (e.g., PEC water splitting, PEC photodetection, PEC catalysis, PEC degradation and PEC biosensors) are also presented and appraised. Last but not least, a brief summary and personal insights on the challenges and future directions in the community of next-generation PEC devices are also provided.

Carrier transport and photoconductivity properties of BN50/NiO50 nanocomposite films

BN₅₀/NiO₅₀ and Au-loaded BN₅₀/NiO₅₀ nanocomposite films were separately fabricated on the glass substrates for carrier transport and photoconductivity properties. X-ray diffraction pattern of the films show the hexagonal structure of BN and presence of defect states by Nelson Riley factor analysis. Morphological images show spherical shaped particles with highly porous structure. The incorporation of NiO may hindered growth of BN layers and resulted in spherical particles. Temperature-dependent conductivity describes semiconductor transport behaviour for deposited nanocomposite films. Thermal activation conduction with low activation energy (∼0.308 eV) may be responsible for the resulting conductivity. Further, the light intensity dependent photoelectrical properties of BN₅₀/NiO₅₀ and Au-loaded BN₅₀/NiO₅₀ nanocomposites have been explored. The effect of Au nanoparticles loading on enhanced photo-conductivities (∼22% increase) than bare nanocomposite film has been elaborated by proposed mechanism. This study provided the insightful information for carrier transport and photoconductivity of BN-based nanocomposites.

Nickel Single-Atom Catalyst-Mediated Efficient Redox Cycle Enables Self-Checking Photoelectrochemical Biosensing with Dual Photocurrent Readouts

Developing a self-checking photoelectrochemical biosensor with dual photocurrent signals could efficiently eliminate false-positive or false-negative signals. Herein, a novel biosensor with dual photocurrent responses was established for the detection of acetylcholinesterase activity. To achieve photocurrent polarity-switchable behavior, the iodide/tri-iodide redox couple was innovatively introduced to simultaneously consume the photoexcited electrons and holes, which circumvents the inconvenience caused by the addition of different hole- and electron-trapping agents in the electrolyte. Importantly, benefiting from the high catalytic activity, the enhanced photoelectric responsivity can be realized after decorating the counter electrode with nickel single-atom catalysts, which promotes a more efficient iodide/tri-iodide redox reaction under low applied voltages. It is envisioned that the proposed photocurrent polarity switching system offers new routes to sensitive and reliable biosensing.

High Spectral Sensitivity of Strongly Coupled Hybrid Tamm-Plasmonic Resonances for Biosensing Application

In this study, the sensitivity to the refractive index changes of the ambient was studied on the uniform gold film (~50 nm) with a 1D photonic crystal (PC) from periodic five TiO₂ (~110 nm)/SiO₂ (~200 nm) bilayers and gold nano-bumps array produced by direct laser writing on the same sample. The optical signal sensitivity of hybrid plasmonic resonances was compared with traditional surface plasmon resonance (SPR) on a single gold layer. The influence of the strong coupling regime between Tamm plasmon polariton (TPP) and propagated plasmon polaritons in the hybrid plasmonic modes on the sensitivity of the optical was discussed. Recent studies have shown very high hybrid plasmonic mode sensitivity S_HSPP ≈ 26,000 nm/RIU to the refractive index on the uniform gold layer; meanwhile, the introduction of gold lattice reduces the signal sensitivity, but increases the Q-factor of the plasmonic resonances. Despite this, the sensitivity to the ellipsometric parameters Ψ and Δ on the gold lattice was rather high due to the increased Q-factor of the resonances. The comparison of plasmonic resonance sensitivity to the refractive index changes of hybrid TPP-SPP mode on the uniform gold layer and traditional SPR have shown that hybrid plasmonic mode, due to a strong coupling effect, overcomes the SPR by about 27%.

A broadband and polarization-independent metasurface perfect absorber for hot-electron photoconversion

We report an ultra-broadband metasurface perfect absorber from the UV to NIR region based on TiN nanostructures. A polarization-independent experimental average absorption of 0.900 (0.921 in simulation) at the wavelength band from 300 nm to 1500 nm is realized with only an 82 nm-thick TiN layer with TiO₂ and MgF₂ on top, which is efficiently fabricated by utilizing double-beam UV interference lithography followed by sputter coating deposition. A TiN-TiO₂ hot-electron photoelectric conversion system is also simulated. An IPCE of 4% is realized at the wavelength of 710 nm and the average IPCE is 2.86% in the wavelength range of 400 nm to 1500 nm. The demonstrated device suggests an efficient way of designing and fabricating broadband perfect absorbers, which has great application potential in efficient hot-electron optoelectronic and photocatalytic systems.

Plasmonic Ag-decorated Cu2O nanowires for boosting photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction to multi-carbon products

The generation of multi-carbon products on the Cu₂O photocathode remains a great challenge. Herein, effective charge separation and surface catalytic reaction are achieved for photoelectrochemical CO₂ reduction through plasmon metal (Ag) decoration on Cu₂O nanowires. The Cu₂O/Ag composite photocathode achieves a 47.7% faradaic efficiency for CH₃COOH and the generation rate is 212.7 μmol cm^-2 h^-1 under illumination, which is about five times that in dark (44.4 μmol cm^-2 h^-1) at -0.7 V vs. RHE.

Observation of polarity-switchable photoconductivity in III-nitride/MoSx core-shell nanowires

III-V semiconductor nanowires are indispensable building blocks for nanoscale electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, solely relying on their intrinsic physical and material properties sometimes limits device functionalities to meet the increasing demands in versatile and complex electronic world. By leveraging the distinctive nature of the one-dimensional geometry and large surface-to-volume ratio of the nanowires, new properties can be attained through monolithic integration of conventional nanowires with other easy-synthesized functional materials. Herein, we combine high-crystal-quality III-nitride nanowires with amorphous molybdenum sulfides (a-MoS_x) to construct III-nitride/a-MoS_x core-shell nanostructures. Upon light illumination, such nanostructures exhibit striking spectrally distinctive photodetection characteristic in photoelectrochemical environment, demonstrating a negative photoresponsivity of -100.42 mA W^-1 under 254 nm illumination, and a positive photoresponsivity of 29.5 mA W^-1 under 365 nm illumination. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the successful surface modification of the nanowires via a-MoS_x decoration accelerates the reaction process at the electrolyte/nanowire interface, leading to the generation of opposite photocurrent signals under different photon illumination. Most importantly, such polarity-switchable photoconductivity can be further tuned for multiple wavelength bands photodetection by simply adjusting the surrounding environment and/or tailoring the nanowire composition, showing great promise to build light-wavelength controllable sensing devices in the future.

An All-Organic Self-Powered Photodetector with Ultraflexible Dual-Polarity Output for Biosignal Detection

Endowing photodetectors with mechanically flexibility and actual functionality are current research issues in developing optoelectronic devices. However, rigid metal-based or metal-oxide-based electrodes remain a block to the realization of ultraflexible electronics. Thus, an ultraflexible all-organic photodetector (all-OPD) is designed by innovatively introducing symmetrical organic electrodes PH1000/PH1000 to substitute the widely applied indium-doped tin oxide (ITO)/Ag electrodes. Specifically, this all-OPD exhibits a high self-powered responsivity (R) of over 100 mA W^-1 among 500-600 nm and the photocurrent remains about 80% of the original performance after being bent 20 000 circles, and can output steady biosignals for photo-plethysmography (PPG) application. More importantly, this all-OPD outputs dual-polarity photocurrent as it is flipped or folded. Benefitting from the ordered phase distribution and designed Schottky barrier heights, the photogenerated holes will be transferred and collected by nearer electrode, while electrons will be trapped in the thick bulk heterojunction (BHJ) as a result of the long channel. This work offers a new avenue toward developing a multifunctional and ultraflexible all-OPD with a straightforward all-solution method, and it is expected to be more compatible in complex application scenarios.

Enhancing Hot-Electron Photodetection of a TiO2/Au Schottky Junction by Employing a Hybrid Plasmonic Nanostructure

Hot-electron photodetectors (HEPDs) are triggering a strong surge of interest in applications of image sensors and optics communication, since they can realize photoelectric responses when the incident photon energy is lower than the bandwidth of the semiconductor. In traditional HEPD systems, the metal layers are dressed with regular gratings, which can only excite plasmonic resonance over a narrow bandwidth, limiting the hot-electron photoelectric effect. To break this limitation, hybrid plasmonic nanostructures should be applied in HEPDs. Here, we propose a TiO2 based HEPD device incorporated with a hybrid plasmonic nanostructure, which consists of Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) and a conformal transparent Au film. With the assistance of the plasmonic resonances excited in this hybrid nanostructure, the spectrum of the photocurrent response is significantly broadened from the UV band to the visible and near-infrared (NIR) ranges. It is demonstrated that at the wavelengths of 660 nm and 850 nm, the photocurrent in the hybrid HEPD device is enhanced by 610% and 960%, respectively, compared with the counterparts without the addition of Au NPs. This work promotes the development of high performances HEPDs, offering an alternative strategy for realizing photodetection and image sensing in the NIR range.

Suppressed Blinking and Polarization-Dependent Emission Enhancement of Single ZnCdSe/ZnS Dot Coupled with Au Nanorods

Fluorescent quantum dots (QDs) have attracted extensive attention because of their promising applications in many fields such as quantum optics, optoelectronics, solid-state lighting, and bioimaging. However, photo-blinking, low emission efficiency, and instability are the drawbacks of fluorescent QD-based devices, affecting their optical properties and practical applications. Here, we report suppressed blinking, enhanced radiative rate, and polarization-dependent emission properties of single ZnCdSe/ZnS QDs assembled on the surface of Au nanorods (NRs). We found that the local surface plasmon (LSP) of Au NRs significantly regulates the excitation and emission properties of the composite ZnCdSe/ZnS QD-Au NRs (QD-Au NRs). The average number of photons emitted per unit time from single QD-Au NRs has been significantly enhanced compared with that of single ZnCdSe/ZnS QDs on the coverslip, accompanied by a drastically shortened lifetime and suppressed blinking. According to the experimental and simulation analysis, the photogenerated LSP field of Au NRs remarkably increases the excitation transition and the radiative rates of QD-Au NRs. Although the emission efficiency is slightly increased, the synergetic enhancement of excitation and radiative rates sufficiently competes with the nonradiative process to compensate for the low emission efficiency of QDs and ultimately suppress the photo-blinking of QD-Au NRs. Moreover, the polarization-dependent emission enhancement has also been observed and theoretically analyzed, demonstrating good consistency and confirming the contribution of excitation enhancement. Our findings present a practical strategy to improve the optical properties and stability of single QD-Au NR composite and provide essential information for a deep understanding of the interaction between emitters and the LSP field of metal nanoparticles.

Plasmonic photothermal properties of silver nanoparticle grating films

The plasmon-induced photothermal effect offers effective light-to-heat conversion systems. In this study, we fabricate plasmonic photothermal silver nanoparticle (AgNP) grating films to produce highly effective plasmon-induced heat generation films. AgNP films provide effective heat generation by localized surface plasmon excitation in the void of the AgNP films. The heat generated at a AgNP film by irradiation of solar light is 3.4 times higher than that generated at the reference flat evaporated-Ag film. Furthermore, simultaneous excitation of localized surface plasmons and propagating surface plasmons is confirmed to be obtained on AgNP grating films by finite-difference time-domain simulation and reflectivity measurements. The AgNP grating film is created by the nanoimprinting technique. The grating structure on AgNPs further enhances electric field intensity in the large area of the film, which results in higher heat generation. Thus, 5.4 times higher heat generation is achieved compared with that of the reference flat evaporated-Ag film.

Long-Term Stable Near-Infrared-Short-Wave-Infrared Photodetector Driven by the Photothermal Effect of Polypyrrole Nanostructures

Polypyrrole (PPy) is a conductive polymer and widely applied in different applications owing to its broadband absorption in the UV-visible, near-infrared (NIR), and short-wave-infrared (SWIR) spectrum, excellent conductivity, and strong photothermal effect. In this work, we explored for the first time the photothermal effect of PPy nanoparticles (PPy-NPs) in a photothermal-induced detector structure and developed a new type of air-stable hybrid PPy-NPs/Pt photodetector (PD) with NIR/SWIR sensitivity. By combining PPy-NPs with a platinum (Pt)-resistive pattern, we fabricated PPy-NPs/Pt PDs that are sensitive to illumination in the wavelength range from 800 to 2000 nm. Under the illumination of λ = 1.5 μm, the maximum photoresponsivity was measured to be ∼1.3 A/W with a 131 μs photoresponse rise time. Owing to the excellent material stability from both PPy-NPs and the Pt pattern, the current photodetectors show long-term stable photoresponsivity when they were stored in air without encapsulation. The results suggest that the PPy-NPs/Pt hybrid PDs are promising candidates for a new type of low-cost and broadband due to their multiple advantages such as free of toxic heavy metals, air stability, and solution processing.

Harvesting Hot Holes in Plasmon-Coupled Ultrathin Photoanodes for High-Performance Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

The harvesting of hot carriers produced by plasmon decay to generate electricity or drive a chemical reaction enables the reduction of the thermalization losses associated with supra-band gap photons in semiconductor photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells. Through the broadband harvesting of light, hot-carrier PEC devices also produce a sensitizing effect in heterojunctions with wide-band gap metal oxide semiconductors possessing good photostability and catalytic activity but poor absorption of visible wavelength photons. There are several reports of hot electrons in Au injected over the Schottky barrier into crystalline TiO₂ and subsequently utilized to drive a chemical reaction but very few reports of hot hole harvesting. In this work, we demonstrate the efficient harvesting of hot holes in Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) covered with a thin layer of amorphous TiO₂ (a-TiO₂). Under AM1.5G 1 sun illumination, photoanodes consisting of a single layer of ∼50 nm diameter Au NPs coated with a 10 nm shell of a-TiO₂ (Au@a-TiO₂) generated 2.5 mA cm^-2 of photocurrent in 1 M KOH under 0.6 V external bias, rising to 3.7 mA cm^-2 in the presence of a hole scavenger (methanol). The quantum yield for hot-carrier-mediated photocurrent generation was estimated to be close to unity for high-energy photons (λ < 420 nm). Au@a-TiO₂ photoelectrodes produced a small positive photocurrent of 0.1 mA cm^-2 even at a bias of -0.6 V indicating extraction of hot holes even at a strong negative bias. These results together with density functional theory modeling and scanning Kelvin probe force microscope data indicate fast injection of hot holes from Au NPs into a-TiO₂ and light harvesting performed near-exclusively by Au NPs. For comparison, Au NPs coated with a 10 nm shell of Al₂O₃ (Au@Al₂O₃) generated 0.02 mA cm^-2 of photocurrent in 1 M KOH under 0.6 V external bias. These results underscore the critical role played by a-TiO₂ in the extraction of holes in Au@a-TiO₂ photoanodes, which is not replicated by an ordinary dielectric shell. It is also demonstrated here that an ultrathin photoanode (<100 nm in maximum thickness) can efficiently drive sunlight-driven water splitting.

Plasmon-Coupled Photocapacitor Neuromodulators

Efficient transduction of optical energy to bioelectrical stimuli is an important goal for effective communication with biological systems. For that, plasmonics has a significant potential via boosting the light-matter interactions. However, plasmonics has been primarily used for heat-induced cell stimulation due to membrane capacitance change (i.e., optocapacitance). Instead, here, we demonstrate that plasmonic coupling to photocapacitor biointerfaces improves safe and efficacious neuromodulating displacement charges for an average of 185% in the entire visible spectrum while maintaining the faradic currents below 1%. Hot-electron injection dominantly leads the enhancement of displacement current in the blue spectral window, and the nanoantenna effect is mainly responsible for the improvement in the red spectral region. The plasmonic photocapacitor facilitates wireless modulation of single cells at three orders of magnitude below the maximum retinal intensity levels, corresponding to one of the most sensitive optoelectronic neural interfaces. This study introduces a new way of using plasmonics for safe and effective photostimulation of neurons and paves the way toward ultrasensitive plasmon-assisted neurostimulation devices.

Hot-carrier generation from plasmons in an antenna-spacer-mirror nanostructure

By introducing Au-nanodisk antennas, we conveniently got hot carriers from decay of surface plasmons (SPs) on planar interface in an Au-antennas/TiO₂-spacer/Au-mirror (ASM) structure without an additional phase-matching process for SP generation. The presence of hot carriers from SPs is distinguished by opposite photocurrents compared with a similar structure without an Au mirror. Analyzed by extinction spectra and electrodynamics simulations, reflection between an Au nanodisk layer and an Au mirror induces an optical response of cavity mode, which excites SPs on an Au-mirror interface and significantly enhances the light harvesting, thus leading to a relatively high hot-carrier density from SP decay. The peak of incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiencies at different wavelength also well matches the optical response of the structure.

Dual plasmonic nanostructures for switching polarity of hot electron-induced photocurrent

We report on the experimental investigation of polarity-switchable hot electron-induced photocurrents in dual-plasmonic nanostructures, consisting of two layers of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) separated by a TiO₂ film. Hot electrons generated through the non-radiative decay of the localized surface plasmon resonances supported by the top and bottom layers of AuNPs can be simultaneously injected into the TiO₂ film in opposite directions and counteract each other. As a result, the polarity and magnitude of the net photocurrents can be tailored by controlling the population of hot electrons either generated from or collected by the two layers of AuNPs. We believe the wavelength-dependent photocurrent polarity switching could be useful for biosensors with a direct electrical readout and photoconversion applications.

Electrocatalytic glycerol oxidation enabled by surface plasmon polariton-induced hot carriers in Kretschmann configuration

Plasmonic hot carrier generation has attracted increasing attention due to its ability to convert light to electrical energy. The generation of plasmon-induced hot carriers can be achieved via Landau damping in the non-radiative decay process of the plasmonic excitation energy. Localized surface plasmons (LSPs) undergo both radiative and non-radiative decays, while surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) dissipate only via the non-radiative decay. Thus, it is a challenging task to exploit the surface plasmon polaritons for the efficient generation of hot carriers and their applications. In this study, a model hot-carrier-mediated electrocatalytic conversion system was demonstrated using an Au thin film in Kretschmann configuration, which is the representative platform to excite SPPs. AgPt-decorated Au nanobipyramids (AuNBPs) were designed and introduced onto the Au film, creating hot-spots to revolutionize the thin film-based photon-to-carrier conversion efficiency. The glycerol electro-oxidation reaction enabled by such SPP-induced hot carriers was evaluated and exhibited a photon-to-hot carrier conversion efficiency of 2.4 × 10^-3%, which is ∼2.5 times enhanced as compared to the efficiency based on the neat Au film.

Hybrid plasmonic gold-nanorod-platinum short-wave infrared photodetectors with fast response

Short-wave infrared (SWIR) photodetectors, sensitive to the wavelength range between 1 and 3 μm, are essential components for various applications, which constantly demand devices with a lower cost, a higher responsivity and a faster response. In this work, a new hybrid device structure is presented for SWIR photodetection composing a coupling between solution-processed colloidal plasmonic gold (Au) NRs and a morphology-optimized resistive platinum (Pt) microwire. Pt microwires harvest efficiently the photothermal effect of Au NRs and in return generating a change of device resistance. A fast photon-heat-resistance conversion happens in these Au-NRs/Pt photodetectors exhibiting a response (rise) time of 97 μs under the illumination of a λ = 1.5 μm laser. Clear photoresponse can be observed in these devices at a laser illumination with a modulation frequency up to 50 kHz. The photoresponsivity of the current devices reached 4500 Ω W-1 under a laser power of 0.2 mW, which is equivalent to a responsivity of 340 mA W-1 under a DC bias of 1 V. A series of mapping experiments were performed providing a direct correlation between Au NRs and the device zone where resistance change happens under a laser illumination modulated at different frequencies.

Copper nanoparticles with near-unity, omnidirectional, and broadband optical absorption for highly efficient solar steam generation

Solar steam generation provides a renewable and environmentally friendly approach to solve the water shortage issue. The pursuit of efficient, stable, and cheap photothermal agents is thus of great significance. In this work, Cu nanoparticles (NPs) fabricated simply by a substitution reaction, exhibit a near-unity (∼97.7%) light absorption, covering a broad incident angle and wavelength range (200-1300 nm). Thereby, a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 93% is achieved. The excellent photothermal performance offers a unique opportunity for the development of solar steam generation. By coating the Cu NPs on a cellulose membrane, a solar steam generation efficiency up to 73% is acquired at a low irradiation power density of 2 kW m^-2 (1 kW m^-2 = 1 sun). Moreover, the Cu NPs are recyclable with the high stability being resistant to heat, photoirradiation and corrosion of brine.

Direct observation of ultrafast plasmonic hot electron transfer in the strong coupling regime

Achieving strong coupling between plasmonic oscillators can significantly modulate their intrinsic optical properties. Here, we report the direct observation of ultrafast plasmonic hot electron transfer from an Au grating array to an MoS₂ monolayer in the strong coupling regime between localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). By means of femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, the measured hot electron transfer time is approximately 40 fs with a maximum external quantum yield of 1.65%. Our results suggest that strong coupling between LSPs and SPPs has synergetic effects on the generation of plasmonic hot carriers, where SPPs with a unique nonradiative feature can act as an 'energy recycle bin' to reuse the radiative energy of LSPs and contribute to hot carrier generation. Coherent energy exchange between plasmonic modes in the strong coupling regime can further enhance the vertical electric field and promote the transfer of hot electrons between the Au grating and the MoS₂ monolayer. Our proposed plasmonic strong coupling configuration overcomes the challenge associated with utilizing hot carriers and is instructive in terms of improving the performance of plasmonic opto-electronic devices.

Direct Assembly of Large Area Nanoparticle Arrays

A major goal of nanotechnology is the assembly of nanoscale building blocks into functional optical, electrical, or chemical devices. Many of these applications depend on an ability to optically or electrically address single nanoparticles. However, positioning large numbers of single nanocrystals with nanometer precision on a substrate for integration into solid-state devices remains a fundamental roadblock. Here, we report fast, scalable assembly of thousands of single nanoparticles using electrophoretic deposition. We demonstrate that gold nanospheres down to 30 nm in size and gold nanorods <100 nm in length can be assembled into predefined patterns on transparent conductive substrates within a few seconds. We find that rod orientation can be preserved during deposition. As proof of high fidelity scale-up, we have created centimeter scale patterns comprising more than 1 million gold nanorods.

UV-visible photocurrent enhancement using metal-semiconductor-metal with symmetric and asymmetric double Schottky barriers

We experimentally report improved photocurrent performance under the illumination of both UV and visible light in the metal-semiconductor-metal nanostructures with double Schottky barriers, consisting of a monolayer of Au nanoparticles and a planar Au film separated by a thin WO3 layer. In addition to the near-unit broadband optical absorption causing the increased population of hot electrons, we demonstrate that the occurrence of the electron trapping effect at the bottom Schottky barrier is also responsible for the photocurrent enhancement under visible light illumination. Under the direct UV bandgap excitation of WO3, the electron trapping effect at the bottom barrier plays a crucial role in the anodic photocurrent enhancement. Furthermore, we demonstrate that by replacing the Au film with the metal Pt of higher work function to increase the barrier height of the bottom Schottky barrier, and hence strengthening its ability for electron trapping, the photocurrent is found to gain a further significant enhancement under the illumination of both visible and UV light.

Photothermal Cellulose-Patch with Gold-Spiked Silica Microrods Based on Escherichia coli

Plasmonic-mediated photothermal heating under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation is an emerging key technology in the field of photothermal therapy and chemical reactions. However, there are few reports of photothermal film (dry-type patch), and thus, in this work, we developed the plasmonic-induced photothermal cellulose-patch operating in the NIR region. Hollow and spikelike gold nanostructures, gold-spikes, as plasmonic nanoparticles were prepared and decorated on silica microrods, which were prepared based on a unicellular organism, Escherichia coli, as a framework. In addition, freestanding cellulose-patch was prepared by mixing filter-paper pulp and armored golden E. coli (AGE) microrods. The major absorbing peak of AGE solution was revealed to be 873 nm, and the surface temperature of patch was increased to 264 °C within a very short time (1 min). When NIR laser was irradiated on the patch dipped in the water, the formation of water vapor and air bubbles was observed. The heating efficiency of indirect heat transfer via conduction from patch-to-water was 35.0%, while that of direct heat transfer via radiation from patch in water was 86.1%. Therefore, the cellulose-patch containing AGE microrods has possible applicability to desalination and sterilization because of its fast heating rate and high light-to-heat conversion under the irradiation of low-powered IR laser.
