Chiral transcription in self-assembled tetrahedral Eu4L6 chiral cages displaying sizable circularly polarized luminescence

Enantiopure trigonal bipyramidal coordination cages templated by in situ self-organized D2h-symmetric anions

The control of a molecule's geometry, chirality, and physical properties has long been a challenging pursuit. Our study introduces a dependable method for assembling D3-symmetric trigonal bipyramidal coordination cages. Specifically, D2h-symmetric anions, like oxalate and chloranilic anions, self-organize around a metal ion to form chiral-at-metal anionic complexes, which template the formation of D3-symmetric trigonal bipyramidal coordination cages. The chirality of the trigonal bipyramid is determined by the point chirality of chiral amines used in forming the ligands. Additionally, these cages exhibit chiral selectivity for the included chiral-at-metal anionic template. Our method is broadly applicable to various ligand systems, enabling the construction of larger cages when larger D2h-symmetric anions, like chloranilic anions, are employed. Furthermore, we successfully produce enantiopure trigonal bipyramidal cages with anthracene-containing backbones using this approach, which would be otherwise infeasible. These cages exhibit circularly polarized luminescence, which is modulable through the reversible photo-oxygenation of the anthracenes.

Circular Heterochiral Titanium-Based Self-Assembled Architectures

Circular trinuclear helicates have been synthesized from a bis-biphenol strand (LH4), titanium isopropoxide, and various diimine ligands. These self-assembled architectures constructed around three TiO4N2 nodes have a heterochiral structure (C1 symmetry) when 2,2'-bipyridine (A), 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (B), 4,4'-bromo-2,2'-bipyridine (C), or 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyrimidine (D) is employed. Within these complexes, one nitrogen ligand is endo-positioned inside the metallo-macrocycle, whereas the other two diimine ligands point outside the helicate framework. This investigation highlights that the nitrogen ligand which does not participate in the helicate framework of the complex controls the overall symmetry of the helicate since the 2,2'-bipyrimidine chelate (F) ends in the formation of a homochiral aggregate (C3 symmetry). The lack of symmetry found in the solid state for the trinuclear species ([Ti3L3(B)3], [Ti3L3(C)3], and [Ti3L3(D)3]) is observed for these complexes in solution (dichloromethane or chloroform). Remarkably, the 2,2'-bipyrazine ligand (ligand E) ends in the formation of a hexameric aggregate formulated as [Ti6L6(E)6], whereas the use of 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyrimidine (ligand D) permits to generate the dinuclear complexes ([Ti2L(D)2(OiPr)4] and [Ti2L2(D)2]) in addition to the trimeric structure [Ti3L3(D)3]. The behavior of [Ti3L3(A)3] in solution, on the other hand, is unique since an equilibrium between the homochiral and the heterochiral form is reached within 17 days after the complex has been dissolved in dichloromethane (C3-[Ti3L3(A)3]/C1-[Ti3L3(A)3] ratio = 0.3). In chloroform, the heterochiral form of [Ti3L3(A)3] is stable for the same period of time, evidencing the dependence of this stereochemical transformation toward the solvent medium. The thermodynamic and kinetic parameters linked to this stereochemical equilibrium have been obtained and point to the fact that the transformation is intramolecular and not induced by the presence of external ligands. The thermodynamic constant of the C1-[Ti3L3(A)3]/C3-[Ti3L3(A)3] equilibrium is found to be K = 0.34 ± 10%. Further evidence to rationalize this solvent-induced symmetry switch is obtained via a DFT calculation and classical molecular dynamics. In particular, this computational investigation elucidates the reason why the stereochemical transformation of a heterochiral architecture into a homochiral structure is possible only for a trinuclear assembly containing ligand A.

Ligand Chirality Transfer from Solution State to the Crystalline Self-Assemblies in Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL) Active Lanthanide Systems

The synthesis of a family of chiral and enantiomerically pure pyridyl-diamide (pda) ligands that upon complexation with europium [Eu(CF3SO3)3] result in chiral complexes with metal centered luminescence is reported; the sets of enantiomers giving rise to both circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signatures. The solid-state structures of these chiral metallosupramolecular systems are determined using X-ray diffraction showing that the ligand chirality is transferred from solution to the solid state. This optically favorable helical packing arrangement is confirmed by recording the CPL spectra from the crystalline assembly by using steady state and enantioselective differential chiral contrast (EDCC) CPL Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (CPL-LSCM) where the two enantiomers can be clearly distinguished.

Helical Cage Rotors Switched on by Brake Molecule with Variable Fluorescence and Circularly Polarized Luminescence

While chiral molecular rotors have unique frames and cavities to possibly generate switchable chiroptical functions, it still remains a formidable challenge to precisely restrict their rotations to activate certain functions such as fluorescence as well as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), which are strongly related to the local molecular rotations. Herein, we design a pair of enantiopure helical cage rotors, which emit light neither at the molecular state nor in the crystal or aggregation states, although they contain luminophore groups. However, upon mounting with fluoroaromatic borane (TFPB) as a molecular brake, the phenyl rotation of the helical cage can be effectively hindered and fluorescence and CPL activities of the molecular cage are switched on. Crystal structure analysis reveals that the rotation is restricted through synergistic B-O-H-N bonding and a fluoroaromatic-aromatic (ArF-Ar) dipole interaction. Moreover, the helical cages are switched on stepwise with color-variable fluorescence and CPL by the inner brake in the molecular state and the outer brake in the supramolecular assemblies, respectively. This work not only provides the design idea of chiroptical molecular rotors but also unveils how fluorescence and CPL could be generated in cage rotor systems.

Hexanuclear Ln6 L6 Complex Formation by Using an Unsymmetric Ligand

Multinuclear, self-assembled lanthanide complexes present clear opportunities as sensors and imaging agents. Despite the widely acknowledged potential of this class of supramolecule, synthetic and characterization challenges continue to limit systematic studies into their self-assembly restricting the number and variety of lanthanide architectures reported relative to their transition metal counterparts. Here we present the first study evaluating the effect of ligand backbone symmetry on multinuclear lanthanide complex self-assembly. Replacement of a symmetric ethylene linker with an unsymmetric amide at the center of a homoditopic ligand governs formation of an unusual Ln6 L6 complex with coordinatively unsaturated metal centers. The choice of triflate as a counterion, and the effect of ionic radii are shown to be critical for formation of the Ln6 L6 complex. The atypical Ln6 L6 architecture is characterized using a combination of mass spectrometry, luminescence, DOSY NMR and EPR spectroscopy measurements. Luminescence experiments support clear differences between comparable Eu6 L6 and Eu2 L3 complexes, with relatively short luminescent lifetimes and low quantum yields observed for the Eu6 L6 structure indicative of non-radiative decay processes. Synthesis of the Gd6 L6 analogue allows three distinct Gd⋯Gd distance measurements to be extracted using homo-RIDME EPR experiments.

A Highly Luminescent Metallo-Supramolecular Radical Cage

Luminescent metal-radicals have recently received increasing attention due to their unique properties and promising applications in materials science. However, the luminescence of metal-radicals tends to be quenched after formation of metallo-complexes. It is challenging to construct metal-radicals with highly luminescent properties. Herein, we report a highly luminescent metallo-supramolecular radical cage (LMRC) constructed by the assembly of a tritopic terpyridinyl ligand RL with tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl (TTM) radical and Zn2+. Electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), traveling-wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry (TWIM-MS), X-ray crystallography, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) confirm the formation of a prism-like supramolecular radical cage. LMRC exhibits a remarkable photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 65%, which is 5 times that of RL; meanwhile, LMRC also shows high photostability. Notably, significant magnetoluminescence can be observed for the high-concentration LMRC (15 wt % doped in PMMA film); however, the magnetoluminescence of 0.1 wt % doped LMRC film vanishes, revealing negligible spin-spin interactions between two radical centers in LMRC.

Excited-Multimer Mediated Supramolecular Upconversion on Multicomponent Lanthanide-Organic Assemblies

Upconversion (UC) is a fascinating anti-Stokes-like optical process with promising applications in diverse fields. However, known UC mechanisms are mainly based on direct energy transfer between metal ions, which constrains the designability and tunability of the structures and properties. Here, we synthesize two types of Ln8L12-type (Ln for lanthanide ion; L for organic ligand L1 or L2R/S) lanthanide-organic complexes with assembly induced excited-multimer states. The Yb8(L2R/S)12 assembly exhibits upconverted multimer green fluorescence under 980 nm excitation through a cooperative sensitization process. Furthermore, upconverted red emission from Eu3+ on the heterometallic (Yb/Eu)8L12 assemblies is also realized via excited-multimer mediated energy relay. Our findings demonstrate a new strategy for designing UC materials, which is crucial for exploiting photofunctions of multicomponent lanthanide-organic complexes.

Anion-Regulated Hierarchical Self-Assembly and Chiral Induction of Metallo-Tetrahedra

The precise control over hierarchical self-assembly of superstructures relying on the elaboration of multiple noncovalent interactions between basic building blocks is both elusive and highly desirable. We herein report a terpyridine-based metallo-cage T with a tetrahedral motif and utilized it as an efficient building block for the controlled hierarchical self-assembly of superstructures in response to different halide ions. Initially, the hierarchical superstructure of metallo-cage T adopted a hexagonal close-packed structure. By adding Cl- /Br- or I- , drastically different hierarchical superstructures with highly-tight hexagonal packing or graphite-like packing arrangements, respectively, have been achieved. These unusual halide-ion-triggered hierarchical structural changes resulted in quite distinct intermolecular channels, which provided new insights into the mechanism of three-dimensional supramolecular aggregation and crystal growth based on macromolecular construction. In addition, the chiral induction of the metallo-cage T can be realized with the addition of chiral anions, which stereoselectively generated either PPPP- or MMMM-type enantiomers.

A portable test strip fabricated of luminescent lanthanide-functionalized metal-organic frameworks for rapid and visual detection of tetracycline antibiotics

Tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) are commonly used antibiotics in the treatment of infections, but their overuse has a negative impact on human health and ecosystems. Thus, the development of a facile and on-site visualization method for TC detection is necessary. Here, we propose the potential of using lanthanide-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) composites (Ag+/Tb3+@UiO-66-(COOH)2, ATUC) as a probe for the rapid detection of tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and doxycycline (DOX) residues, in which UiO-66-(COOH)2 (UC) could be utilized to provide an interaction microenvironment, Tb3+ as recognition units and Ag+ as a fluorescence enhancer. Upon exposure to TCs, significant luminescence quenching of ATUC excited at 255 nm was observed due to the inner filter effect (IFE) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET), and the established strategy has a detection limit (LOD) of 11.0, 20.1, 9.1, and 22.5 nM for TC, CTC, OTC, and DOX, respectively. More importantly, given its portability and conspicuous luminescence color gradation variation, a portable test strip based on ATUC was manufactured and the results could be distinguished immediately by the naked eye and smartphone analysis, allowing for on-site rapid quantitative assay of TCs, not only in the laboratory but also in a point-of-care setting.

Intramolecular charge transfer enables highly-efficient X-ray luminescence in cluster scintillators

Luminescence clusters composed of organic ligands and metals have gained significant interests as scintillators owing to their great potential in high X-ray absorption, customizable radioluminescence, and solution processability at low temperatures. However, X-ray luminescence efficiency in clusters is primarily governed by the competition between radiative states from organic ligands and nonradiative cluster-centered charge transfer. Here we report that a class of Cu₄I₄ cubes exhibit highly emissive radioluminescence in response to X-ray irradiation through functionalizing biphosphine ligands with acridine. Mechanistic studies show that these clusters can efficiently absorb radiation ionization to generate electron-hole pairs and transfer them to ligands during thermalization for efficient radioluminescence through precise control over intramolecular charge transfer. Our experimental results indicate that copper/iodine-to-ligand and intraligand charge transfer states are predominant in radiative processes. We demonstrate that photoluminescence and electroluminescence quantum efficiencies of the clusters reach 95% and 25.6%, with the assistance of external triplet-to-singlet conversion by a thermally activated delayed fluorescence matrix. We further show the utility of the Cu₄I₄ scintillators in achieving a lowest X-ray detection limit of 77 nGy s^-1 and a high X-ray imaging resolution of 12 line pairs per millimeter. Our study offers insights into universal luminescent mechanism and ligand engineering of cluster scintillators.

Practical Post-Kohn-Sham Methods for Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking References

The applicability of reduced scaling algorithms based on auxiliary subspace methods for the correlation energy from the random phase approximation (RPA) as well as the correlation part of the self-energy obtained from the GW method is outlined for time-reversal symmetry breaking Kohn-Sham (KS) references. The updated algorithms allow for an efficient evaluation of RPA energies and GW quasiparticle energies for molecular systems with KS references that break time-reversal symmetry. The latter occur, for example, in magnetic fields. Furthermore, KS references for relativistic open-shell molecules also break time-reversal symmetry due to the single determinant ansatz used. Errors of the updated reduced-scaling algorithms are shown to be negligible compared to reference implementations, while the overall computational scaling is reduced by 2 orders of magnitude. Ionization energies obtained from the GW approximation are shown to be robust even for the electronically complicated group of trivalent lanthanoid ions. Starting from GW quasiparticle energies, it is subsequently shown that light-matter interactions of these systems can be calculated using the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE). Using the combined GW-BSE method, the absorption and emission spectra of a molecular europium(III) complex can be obtained including spin-orbit coupling.

Subtle Stereochemical Effects Influence Binding and Purification Abilities of an FeII4L4 Cage

A tetrahedral Fe^II₄L₄ cage assembled from the coordination of triangular chiral, face-capping ligands to iron(II). This cage exists as two diastereomers in solution, which differ in the stereochemistry of their metal vertices, but share the same point chirality of the ligand. The equilibrium between these cage diastereomers was subtly perturbed by guest binding. This perturbation from equilibrium correlated with the size and shape fit of the guest within the host; insight as to the interplay between stereochemistry and fit was provided by atomistic well-tempered metadynamics simulations. The understanding thus gained as to the stereochemical impact on guest binding enabled the design of a straightforward process for the resolution of the enantiomers of a racemic guest.

Conglomerate, Racemate, and Achiral Crystals of Polymetallic Europium(III) Compounds of Bis- or Tris-β-diketonate Ligands and Circularly Polarized Luminescence Study

This work reports (a) conglomerate and racemic crystal structures of [(Δ,Δ,Δ,Δ,Δ,Δ)- or/and (Λ,Λ,Λ,Λ,Λ,Λ)-Eu^III ₆(TTP)₈(OH₂)₆Na₄] _n coordination polymers, (b) racemic crystal structures of (Δ,Δ,Δ,Δ)-/(Λ,Λ,Λ,Λ)-Eu^III ₄(TTP)₄(bipy)₄(MEK)₂(OH₂)₂ tetrahedral clusters, and (c) the achiral crystal structure of the [Eu^III ₂(BTP)₄(OH₂)₂Na₂] _n coordination polymer (where BTP = dianionic bis-β-diketonate, TTP = trianionic tris-β-diketonate, and bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine). The screw coordination arrangement of the TTP ligand has led to the formation of homoconfigurational racemic Eu^III products. The conglomerate crystallization of [Eu^III ₆(TTP)₈(OH₂)₆Na₄] _n appears to be caused by the presence of the sodium, Na⁺ counterions, and interactions between oxygen atoms and the trifluoromethyl unit of the TTP ligand and Na⁺ ions. All the Eu^III compounds exhibit characteristic red luminescence (⁵D₀ → ⁷F_J, J = 0-4) in solution or in the solid crystalline state. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was observed in the chiral Eu^III ₆(TTP)₈(OH₂)₆Na₄] _n species, displaying a |g _lum| value in the range of 0.15 to 0.68 at the ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₁ emission band. Subtle changes of the [Eu^III ₆(TTP)₈(OH₂)₆Na₄] _n structure which may be due to selection of twinned crystals or crystals that do not correspond to a perfect spontaneous resolution, are considered to be responsible for the variation in the observed CPL values.

Homochiral Porous Metal-Organic Polyhedra with Multiple Kinds of Vertices

Metal-organic polyhedra featuring non-Archimedean/Platonic architectures with multiple kinds of vertices have aroused great attention for their fascinating structures and properties but are yet challenging to achieve. Here, we report a combinatorial strategy to make such nonclassic polyhedral cages by combining kinetically labile metal ions with non-planar organic linkers instead of the usual only inert metal centers and planar ligands. This facilitates the synthesis of an enantiopure twisted tetra(3-pyridyl)-based TADDOL (TADDOL = tetraaryl-1,3-dioxolane-4,5-dimethanol) ligand (L) capable of binding Ni(II) ions to produce a regular convex cage, Ni₆L₈, with two mixed metal/organic vertices and three rarely reported concave cages Ni₁₄L₈, Ni₁₈L₁₂, and Ni₂₄L₁₆ with three or four mixed vertices. Each of the cages has an amphiphilic cavity decorated with chiral dihydroxyl functionalities and packs into a three-dimensional structure. The enantioselective adsorption and separation performances of the cages are strongly dependent on their pore structure features. Particularly, Ni₁₄L₈ and Ni₁₈L₁₂ with wide openings can be solid adsorbents for the adsorptive and solid-phase extractive separation of a variety of racemic spirodiols with up to 98% ee, whereas Ni₆L₈ and Ni₂₄L₁₆ with smaller pore apertures cannot adsorb the racemates. The combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the host-guest adduct and GCMC simulation indicates that the enantiospecific recognition capabilities originate from the well-organized chiral inner sphere as well as multiple interactions within the chiral microenvironment. This work therefore provides an attractive strategy for the rational design of polyhedral cages, showing geometrically fascinating structures with properties different from those of classic assemblies.

Tailored Supramolecular Cage for Efficient Bio-Labeling

Fluorescent chemosensors are powerful imaging tools used in a broad range of biomedical fields. However, the application of fluorescent dyes in bioimaging still remains challenging, with small Stokes shifts, interfering signals, background noise, and self-quenching on current microscope configurations. In this work, we reported a supramolecular cage (C_A) by coordination-driven self-assembly of benzothiadiazole derivatives and Eu(OTf)₃. The C_A exhibited high fluorescence with a quantum yield (QY) of 38.57%, good photoluminescence (PL) stability, and a large Stokes shift (153 nm). Furthermore, the CCK-8 assay against U87 glioblastoma cells verified the low cytotoxicity of C_A. We revealed that the designed probes could be used as U87 cells targeting bioimaging.

Chirality-Driven Self-Assembly of Discrete, Homochiral FeII 2 L3 Cages

Coordination chemistry is a powerful method to synthesize supramolecular cages with distinct features that suit specific applications. This work demonstrates the synthesis of discrete, homochiral Fe^II ₂ L₃ cages via chirality-driven self-assembly. Specifically, the installation of chirality - at both the vertices and ligand backbones - allows the formation of discrete, homochiral Fe^II ₂ L₃ cages of different sizes via stereochemical control of the iron(II) centers. We observed that larger cages require multiple chiral centra (chiral ligands and vertices). In contrast, the formation of smaller cages is stereoselective with solely chiral ligands. The latter cages can also be formed from two chiral subcomponents, but only when they have matching chirality. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction of these smaller Fe^II ₂ L₃ cages revealed several non-covalent interactions as a driving force for narcissistic chiral self-sorting. This expected behavior was confirmed utilizing the shorter ligands in racemic form, yielding discrete, homochiral Fe^II ₂ L₃ cages formed in enantiomeric pairs.

Highly Stable Europium(III) Tetrahedral (Eu4L4)(phen)4 Cage: Structure, Luminescence Properties, and Cellular Imaging

Luminescent lanthanide cages have many potential applications in guest recognition, sensing, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and bioimaging. However, these polynuclear lanthanide assemblies' poor stability, dispersity, and luminescence properties have significantly constrained their practical applications. Furthermore, it is still a huge challenge to simultaneously synthesize and design lanthanide organic polyhedra with high stability and quantum yield. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and robust strategy to improve the rigidity, chemical stability, and luminescence of an Eu(III) tetrahedral cage by introducing the conjugated planar auxiliary phen ligand. The self-assembled tetrahedral cage, (Eu₄L₄)(phen)₄ [L = (4,4',4″-tris(4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-dioxobutyl)-triphenylamine), phen = 1,10-phenanthroline], exhibited characteristic luminescence of Eu³⁺ ions with high quantum yield (41%) and long lifetime (131 μs) in toluene (1.0 × 10^-6 M). Moreover, the Eu(III) cage was stable in water and even in an aqueous solution with a pH range of 1-14. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and cellular imaging revealed that the Pluronic F127-coated hybrid material, (Eu₄L₄)(phen)₄@F127, exhibited low cytotoxicity, good biocompatibility, and cellular imaging ability, which may inspire more insights into the development of lanthanide organic polyhedra (LOPs) for potential biomedical applications.

Differentiable Formation of Chiroptical Lanthanide Heterometallic Lnn Ln'4-n (L6 ) (n=0-4) Tetrahedra with C2 -Symmetrical Bis(tridentate) Ligands

Construction of lanthanide heterometallic complex is important for engineering multifunction molecular containers. However, it remains a challenge because of the similar ionic radii of lanthanides. Herein we attempt to prepare chiral lanthanide heterometallic tetrahedra. Upon crystallization with a mixture of [Eu2 L3 ] and [Ln2 L3 ] (Ln=Gd, Tb and Dy) helicates, a mixture of heterometallic Eun Ln'4-n (L6 ) (n=0-4) tetrahedra was prepared. Selective formation of heterometallic tetrahedron was observed as MS deconvolution results deviated from statistical results. The formation of heterometallic tetrahedron was found to be sensitive to ionic radii as well as the ratio of the two helicates used in the crystallization.

Solvent Drives Switching between Λ and Δ Metal Center Stereochemistry of M8L6 Cubic Cages

An enantiopure ligand with four bidentate metal-binding sites and four (S)-carbon stereocenters self-assembles with octahedral Zn^II or Co^II to produce O-symmetric M₈L₆ coordination cages. The Λ- or Δ-handedness of the metal centers forming the corners of these cages is determined by the solvent environment: the same (S)-ligand produces one diastereomer, (S)₂₄-Λ₈-M₈L₆, in acetonitrile but another with opposite metal-center handedness, (S)₂₄-Δ₈-M₈L₆, in nitromethane. Van ’t Hoff analysis revealed the Δ stereochemical configuration to be entropically favored but enthalpically disfavored, consistent with a loosening of the coordination sphere and an increase in conformational freedom following Λ-to-Δ transition. The binding of 4,4′-dipyridyl naphthalenediimide and tetrapyridyl Zn-porphyrin guests did not interfere with the solvent-driven stereoselectivity of self-assembly, suggesting applications where either a Λ- or Δ-handed framework may enable chiral separations or catalysis.

Overcoming Efficiency Limitation of Cluster Light-Emitting Diodes with Asymmetrically Functionalized Biphosphine Cu4I4 Cubes

Electroluminescent (EL) nanoclusters holding promise for new-generation cluster light-emitting devices (CLEDs) rapidly emerge. However, slow radiation and serious quenching of cluster emitters largely limit the device performance. Herein, we report two monofunctionalized biphosphine chelated Cu₄I₄ clusters [DMACDBFDP]₂Cu₄I₄ and [DPACDBFDP]₂Cu₄I₄. The asymmetric modification and electron-donating effect of acridine groups lead to the iodine-to-ligand charge transfer predominant excited states of the clusters, which feature thermally activated delayed fluorescence with markedly improved singlet radiative rate constants and reduced triplet nonradiative rate constants. As consequence, compared to the nonfunctionalized parent cluster, [DPACDBFDP]₂Cu₄I₄ achieves 16-fold increased photoluminescence (81%) and 20-fold increased EL (19.5%) quantum efficiencies. Such new-record efficiencies make CLEDs achieve the state-of-the-art performance of all kinds of EL technologies.

Guest-Driven Self-Assembly and Chiral Induction of Photofunctional Lanthanide Tetrahedral Cages

Chiral luminescent lanthanide-organic cages have many potential applications in enantioselective recognition, sensing, and asymmetric catalysis. However, due to the paucity of structures and their limited cavities, host-guest chemistry with lanthanide-organic cages has remained elusive so far. Herein, we report a guest-driven self-assembly and chiral induction approach for the construction of otherwise inaccessible Ln₄L₄-type (Ln = lanthanide ions, i.e., Eu^III, Tb^III; L = ligand) tetrahedral hosts. Single crystal analyses on a series of host-guest complexes reveal remarkable guest-adaptive cavity breathing on the tetrahedral cages, reflecting the advantage of the variation tolerance on coordination geometry of the f-elements. Meanwhile, noncovalent confinement of pyrene within the lanthanide cage not only leads to diminishment of its excimer emission but also facilitates guest to host energy transfer, opening up a new sensitization window for the lanthanide luminescence on the cage. Moreover, stereoselective self-assembly of either Λ₄- or Δ₄- type Eu₄L₄ cages has been realized via chiral induction with R/S-BINOL or R/S-SPOL templates, as confirmed by NMR, circular dichroism (CD), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with high dissymmetry factors (g_lum) up to ±0.125.

Coordination-Directed Self-Assembly of Functional Polynuclear Lanthanide Supramolecular Architectures

Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (Ln^III). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

Circularly polarized luminescent porous crystalline nanomaterials

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials have attracted exclusive attention because of their wide potential applications in low-power-consumption displays, encrypted information storage, chiroptical sensors, and so on. However, there is always a trade-off between the luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) and luminescence quantum yield, which are two critical parameters. Therefore, developing materials with both large g_lum values and high luminescence efficiency is a key issue for constructing high-efficiency CPL materials. To date, chiral porous crystalline nanomaterials (PCNMs) including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porous organic-cages (POCs), metal-organic cages (MOCs), and supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs), have shown excellent potential for solving this problem and achieving functional CPL-active materials. In this review, we will summarize several approaches for fabricating CPL-active PCNMs, such as direct synthesis, chirality induction, and symmetry breaking. Furthermore, with flexibly tunable structures and comprehensive host-guest chemistry, modulation and amplification of CPL can be achieved in these PCNMs. We would like to provide insight and perspective that PCNMs can act as an efficient platform in the CPL research field.

CPL on/off control of an assembled system by water soluble macrocyclic chiral sources with planar chirality

Herein, we report the synthesis and planar chiral properties of a pair of water-soluble cationic pillar[5]arenes with stereogenic carbons. Interestingly, although units of the molecules were rotatable, only one planar chiral diastereomer existed in water in both cases. As a new type of chiral source, these molecules transmitted chiral information from the planar chiral cavities to the assembly of a water-soluble extended π-conjugated compound, affording circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The chirality transfer process and resulting CPL were extremely sensitive to the feed ratio of the chiral pillar[5]arenes owing to the combined action of their planar chirality, bulkiness, and strong binding properties. When a limited amount of chiral source was added, further assembly of the extended π-conjugated compound into helical fibers with CPL was triggered. Unexpectedly, larger amounts of chiral source destroyed the helical fiber assemblies, resulting in elimination of the chirality and CPL properties from the assembled structures.

Readily obtained pillar[5]arenes with pure planar chirality enabled CPL on/off control of an assembled system by varying the feed ratio.

Sky Blue and Yellow Cluster Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Asymmetric Cu 4 I 4 Nanocubes

Controllably optimizing excited-state characteristics is crucial for luminescent nanoclusters but remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report an effective “ligand-induced asymmetrization” strategy for constructing thermally activated delayed fluorescence-featured cubic Cu 4 I 4 nanoclusters with asymmetric configurations, named [tBCzDBFDP] 2 Cu 4 I 4 and [PTZDBFDP] 2 Cu 4 I 4 . Through changing 3,6-di- tert -butyl-carbazole (tBCz) to phenothiazine (PTZ) with a stronger electron-donating effect, emission color is tuned from greenish blue of [tBCzDBFDP] 2 Cu 4 I 4 to yellow of [PTZDBFDP] 2 Cu 4 I 4 , as well as the triplet locally excited state of the former to the triplet charge transfer state of the latter. Temperature-correlated spectroscopic investigation indicates that in terms of triplet quenching suppression, [tBCzDBFDP] 2 Cu 4 I 4 is superior to [PTZDBFDP] 2 Cu 4 I 4 , in accord with the stabilities of their triplet locally excited state and triplet charge transfer state. As a consequence, these asymmetric Cu 4 I 4 nanocubes endowed their cluster light-emitting diodes with the external quantum efficiencies beyond 12% for sky blue and 8% for yellow. These results suggest the significance and effectiveness of ligand engineering for optoelectronic nanoclusters.

Sorting Phenomena and Chirality Transfer in Fluoride-Bridged Macrocyclic Rare Earth Complexes

The reaction of fluoride anions with mononuclear lanthanide(III) and yttrium(III) hexaaza-macrocyclic complexes results in the formation of dinuclear fluoride-bridged complexes. As indicated by X-ray crystal structures, in these complexes two metal ions bound by the macrocycles are linked by two or three bridging fluoride anions, depending on the type of the macrocycle. In the case of the chiral hexaaza-macrocycle L1 derived from trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane, the formation of these μ2-fluorido dinuclear complexes is accompanied by enantiomeric self-recognition of macrocyclic units. In contrast, this kind of recognition is not observed in the case of complexes of the chiral macrocycle L2 derived from 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine. The reaction of fluoride with a mixture of mononuclear complexes of L1 and L2, containing two different Ln(III) ions, results in narcissistic sorting of macrocyclic units. Conversely, a similar reaction involving mononuclear complexes of L1 and complexes of achiral macrocycle L3 based on ethylenediamine results in sociable sorting of macrocyclic units and preferable formation of heterodinuclear complexes. In addition, formation of these heterodinuclear complexes is accompanied by chirality transfer from the chiral macrocycle L1 to the achiral macrocycle L3 as indicated by CPL and CD spectra.

3D Boranil Complexes with Aggregation-Amplified Circularly Polarized Luminescence

The development of small organic CPL-active molecules with large luminescent dissymmetry factors is highly demanded due to their promising applications in chiroptical devices and sensors. This work describes the design and synthesis of a new family of CPL-active BF₂ complexes, (R_p)/(S_p)-3a-3e, which were constructed by fusing a N̂O-chelated BF₂ complex with [2.2]paracyclophane. These complexes display aggregation-amplified CPL with moderate dissymmetry factors values and moderate quantum yields both in solution and in the solid state. In addition, these photophysical properties were rationalized via X-ray diffraction and TD-DFT calculations.

Helicate-to-tetrahedron transformation of chiral lanthanide supramolecular complexes induced by ionic radii effect and linker length

Controlled formation of desired lanthanide supramolecular complexes is challenging because of the difficulties in predicting coordination geometry, as well as a labile coordination number. Herein, we explore the effect of ionic radii and linker length on supramolecular species formation. A helicate-to-tetrahedron transformation occurred between [Ln₂L1₃] and [Ln₄L1₆] (Ln = La, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb and Lu). For six lanthanide ions, the unfavored tetrahedron [La₄L1₆] can only be observed in a concentrated mixture with the helicate [La₂L1₃] where no pure [La₄L1₆] species was isolated via crystallization. For Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, the [Ln₄L1₆] supramolecular tetrahedron can be isolated via crystallization from diisopropyl ether. A similar result was also observed for Lu, but the tetrahedral structure was found to be relatively stable and transformed back to [Lu₂L1₃] much slower upon dissolution.  No tetrahedron formation was observed with L3 giving rise to only [Ln₂L3₃] species, in which L3 contains a longer and more flexible linker compared with that of L1. Results show that the supramolecular transformation in these systems is governed by both the ionic radii as well as the ligand design. Special focus is on both [Eu₂L1₃] and [Eu₄L1₆] which form chiral entities and exhibit interesting circular polarized luminescence.

Homochiral Dodecanuclear Lanthanide "Cage in Cage" for Enantioselective Separation

It is extremely difficult to anticipate the structure and the stereochemistry of a complex, particularly when the ligand is flexible and the metal node adopts diverse coordination numbers. When trivalent lanthanides (Ln^III) and enantiopure amino acid ligands are utilized as building blocks, self-assembly sometimes yields rare chiral polynuclear structures. In this study, an enantiopure carboxyl-functionalized amino acid-based ligand with C₃ symmetry reacts with lanthanum cations to give a homochiral porous coordination cage, (Δ/Λ)₁₂-PCC-57. The dodecanuclear lanthanide cage has an unprecedented octahedral "cage-in-cage" framework. During the self-assembly, the chirality is transferred from the enantiopure ligand and fixed by the binuclear lanthanide cluster to give 12 metal centers that have either Δ or Λ homochiral stereochemistry. The cage exhibits excellent enantioselective separation of racemic alcohols, 2,3-dihydroquinazolinones, and multiple commercially available drugs. This finding exhibits a rare example of a multinuclear lanthanide complex with a dual-walled topology and homochirality. The highly ordered self-assembly and self-sorting of flexible amino acids and lanthanides shed light on the chiral transformation between different complicated artificial systems that mimic natural enzymes.

From Mono- to Polynuclear Coordination Complexes with a 2,2'-Bipyrimidine-4,4'-dicarboxylate Ligand

The coordination properties of the ligand 2,2'-bipyrimidine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (H₂bpd) with lanthanide(III) ions (Ln = Eu, Tb, or Lu) were investigated. The syntheses of the H₂bpd ligand and its salts, [K₂(bpd)(H₂O)₂] (1) and [(AlkNH)Lu(bpd)₂] (Alk = Et, Hex, or en), are described. In the presence of LnCl₃ salts (Ln = Lu, Eu, or Tb), the formation of [Ln(bpd)₂]^- and [Ln(bpd)(H₂O)_x]⁺ species was assessed by ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), spectrophotometry, and spectrofluorometric titrations in aqueous solution. The solid state structure of 1, [K(H₂O)₂][Lu(bpd)₂] (2), and [(Et₃NH)Lu(bpd)₂] (3) could be determined by X-ray diffraction, showing the ligand to act as a tetradentate unit with formation of three five-membered chelate rings around the central Ln(III). With the aim of building polynuclear assemblies, the coordination between [Lu(bdp)₂]^- and [Lu(tta)₃(H₂O)] units (tta = thenoyltrifluoroacetylacetonate) was also investigated. In methanol, ¹H NMR titration experiments revealed the formation of complex mixtures from which two new species could be identified, [Lu₂(bpd)(tta)₄] (4) and H[Lu(bpd)(tta)₂] (5), as confirmed by their solid state structure analysis. Using highly lipophilic cations in chloroform, the octametallic complex [enH]₄[Lu₈(bpd)₄(tta)₁₈] (6) could be isolated and its X-ray structure determined.

Base- and Metal-Dependent Self-Assembly of Lathanide-Organic Coordination Polymers or Macrocycles with Tetradentate Acylhydrazone-based Ditopic Ligands

Herein, we report a comprehensive study on the lanthanide-directed coordination self-assembly with two bis-tetradentate acylhydrazone ligands H₄ L¹ and H₄ L² . Multifarious outcomes, which are base- and metal-dependent, were revealed by NMR, ESI-TOF-MS and X-ray crystallography. In the absence of base, bent H₄ L¹ was assembled into dinuclear double-strand helicate Ln₂ (H₂ L¹ )₂ by partially-deprotonated assembly with La, Sm or Eu, while trinuclear Ln₃ (H₂ L¹ )₃ with Yb or Lu. For linear H₄ L² , infinite 1D zig-zag metal-organic polymeric chain (Ln₂ H₂ L² )_n was obtained. However, complete deprotonated L¹ and L² assembled into discrete trinuclear Ln₃ (L^{1 /2} )₃ and tetranuclear Ln₄ (L^{1 /2} )₄ macrocyclic structures under the basic condition. For these, there are multiple possible isomers coexisting in the solution which were enumerated and simulated with molecular mechanic modeling. Visible-light sensitized NIR emissions on the Yb complexes have been observed, endowing them potential application in photofunctional materials.

Helix-mediated over 1 nm-range chirality recognition by ligand-to-ligand interactions of dinuclear helicates

Long-range chirality recognition between the two chiral guest ligands can be tuned based on the helix distances (d_Ln–Ln = 11.5 and 14.0 Å) of bis-diketonate bridged dinuclear lanthanide complexes (2Th and 3Th, respectively) used as mediators. Both 2Th and 3Th form one-dimensional (1D) helical structures upon terminal binding of two chiral guest co-ligands (L^R or L^S). Long-range chiral self-recognition is achieved in self-assembly of 2Th with L^R and L^S to preferentially form homochiral assemblies, 2Th-L^R·L^R and 2Th-L^S·L^S, whereas there is no direct molecular interaction between the two guest ligands at the terminal edges. X-ray crystal structure analysis and density functional theory studies reveal that long-range chiral recognition is achieved by terminal ligand-to-ligand interactions between the bis-diketonate ligands and chiral guest co-ligands. Conversely, in self-assembly of 3Th with a longer helix length, statistical binding of L^R and L^S occurs, forming heterochiral (3Th-L^R·L^S) and homochiral (3Th-L^R·L^R and 3Th-L^S·L^S) assemblies in an almost 1 : 1 ratio. When phenyl side arms of the chiral guest co-ligands are replaced by isopropyl groups (L′^R and L′^S), chiral self-recognition is also achieved in the self-assembly process of 3Th with the longer helix length to generate homochiral (3Th-L′^R·L′^R and 3Th-L′^S·L′^S) assemblies as the favored products. Thus, subtle modification of the chiral guests is capable of achieving over 1.4 nm-range chirality recognition.

Water-stable lanthanide-organic macrocycles from a 1,2,4-triazole-based chelate for enantiomeric excess detection and pesticide sensing

Water-stable anionic Ln2L2-type (Ln = LaIII and EuIII) lanthanide-organic macrocycles have been constructed by deprotonation self-assembly of a bis-tridentate ligand consisting of two 2,6-bis-(1,2,4-triazole)-pyridine chelation arms bridged by a dibenzofuran chromophore, of which the luminescent Eu2L2 macrocycle can be used for enantiomeric excess (ee) detection toward pybox-type chiral ligands and selective colorimetric sensing of omethoate (OMA) in water.

Hexameric Lanthanide-Organic Capsules with Tertiary Structure and Emergent Functions

Biological macromolecules always function through a collective behavior of the aggregated constituents, which usually are self-assembled together via noncovalent interactions. Likewise, artificial supramolecular assemblies, whose properties and functions are mainly derived from their primary and secondary structures, may also aggregate into high-order architectures with emergent functions not available on the individual components. Here we report the first example of an insulin-like hexamerization of lanthanide triple helicates toward a 4 nm diameter hexameric capsule via consecutive metal-directed and anion-directed assembly processes. Hierarchical chiral-sorting self-assembly endows hexamers with aggregation-induced stability and emission enhancement. Furthermore, emergent guest-encapsulation function and enantioselectivity toward terpene drugs have been realized in the late-formed central cavity of the hexamers. This study not only provides a feasible strategy for constructing sophisticated and multifunctional lanthanide-organic materials but also sheds some light on the self-assembly processes in nature.

Ancillary ligand modulated stereoselective self-assembly of triple-stranded Eu(iii) helicate featuring circularly polarized luminescence

Creating optically pure metal assemblies is a hot research topic in the realms of chiral supramolecules. Here, three new triple-stranded europium(iii) helicates Eu₂L₃(L′)₂ [L = 4,4′-bis(4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-dioxobutyl)diphenyl sulphide; L′ = 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) or R/S-2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphinyl)-1,1′-binaphthyl (R/S-BINAPO)] were synthesized in order to investigate the effects of ancillary ligands on controlling the stereoselective self-assembly of lanthanide helicates. X-ray single crystal structure analysis showed that Eu₂L₃(Phen)₂ crystalized in an achiral space group P1̄ with the equivalent amount of P and M helicates in one single cell. The isolated Eu₂L₃(S-BINAPO)₂ and Eu₂L₃(R-BINAPO)₂ were verified to be enantiopure by ¹H, ¹⁹F, ³¹P NMR and DOSY NMR analyses. Additionally, the mirror-image CD spectra also demonstrated the successful syntheses of the enantiomers and the presence of an effective chirality transformation from BINAPO to achiral L. Furthermore, the perfect mirror-image circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra of Eu₂L₃(S-BINAPO)₂ and Eu₂L₃(R-BINAPO)₂ indicated the existence of the excited state chirality of the Eu³⁺ center associated with |g_lum| values reaching 0.112. In addition, the photophysical properties of three helicates were also discussed.

Chiral ancillary ligands (R/S-BINAPO) modulated the stereoselective self-assembly of lanthanide helicates, which presented strong CPL with |g_lum| values up to 0.112 and high luminescence quantum yield up to 34%.

Metal-Organic Nanocapsules with Functionalized s-Heptazine Ligands

A metalloorganic capsule was synthesized where the ligand is a derivative of heptazine with three carboxylic groups that are coordinated to Cu^II cations, forming paddle-wheel motifs. Each nanocapsule is neutral, with 12 Cu^II centers and 8 ligands adopting a rhombicuboctahedron shape. It has almost 3 nm diameter, and the main intermolecular interactions in the solid are π··· π stacking between the C₆N₇ heptazine moieties. The nanocapsules can form monolayers deposited on graphite as observed by atomic force microscopy, which confirms their stability in solution.

Unusual Magnetic Field Responsive Circularly Polarized Luminescence Probes with Highly Emissive Chiral Europium(III) Complexes

Chirality is ubiquitous within biological systems where many of the roles and functions are still undetermined. Given this, there is a clear need to design and develop sensitive chiral optical probes that can function within a biological setting. Here we report the design and synthesis of magnetically responsive Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL) complexes displaying exceptional photophysical properties (quantum yield up to 31 % and |glum | up to 0.240) by introducing chiral substituents onto the macrocyclic scaffolds. Magnetic CPL responses are observed in these chiral EuIII complexes, promoting an exciting development to the field of magneto-optics. The |glum | of the 5 D0 → 7 F1 transition increases by 20 % from 0.222 (0 T) to 0.266 (1.4 T) displaying a linear relationship between the Δglum and the magnetic field strength. These EuIII complexes with magnetic CPL responses, provides potential development to be used in CPL imaging applications due to improved sensitivity and resolution.

High circularly polarized luminescence brightness from analogues of Shibasaki's lanthanide complexes

To reach the promising potential of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emitters, high CPL brightness must be achieved. We describe the synthesis of analogues of the C₃-symmetrical Shibasaki's lanthanide complexes (Sm, Tb, Dy) supported by enantiopure 5,5',6,6',7,7',8,8'-octahydro-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (H₈-Binol). The complexes exhibit visible luminescence in solution with exceptionally high quantum yields for Sm (4%) and Dy (17%), and strong circularly polarized luminescence for Sm, Tb, and Dy (|g_lum| up to 0.44, 0.32, 0.33, respectively). Altogether, these complexes possess amongst the strongest CPL brightness reported to date in lanthanide molecular complexes (up to 782 M^-1 cm^-1 for Tb).
